A practical guide to Ankama's tactical MMORPG: how turn-based fights work, how to pick and build a class, how leveling, professions, and dungeons fit together, and what Update 1.93 (Crimson Dofus, Pandawa revamp) changed.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 1.93 (live September 22, 2026), level cap 245. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- WAKFU is free to play, with an optional Booster (premium time) that adds convenience and extra rewards. You can reach the endgame without it.
- Combat is turn-based on a grid. Every turn you spend Action Points (AP) on spells, Movement Points (MP) on moving, and some classes also use Wakfu Points (WP) or class-specific resources.
- Pick a class you enjoy playing, not one you read is "best". All 18 classes are viable, and balance changes regularly.
- Stick to one or two elements (Fire, Water, Earth, Air) for your build rather than spreading points across all of them.
- Follow the main quest line. It levels you efficiently and unlocks zones, the Havre-Sac, and key systems.
- Pick a gathering and a crafting profession early. They feed your gear and your kamas.
- Group up for dungeons. You can run multiple characters, and most endgame is built around team composition.
- Learn Stasis. Dungeons can be run at higher Stasis levels for more difficulty and better rewards.
- Gear is refreshed often. Do not over-invest in early items; they are replaced every 15-20 levels.
The Basics
WAKFU is set in the World of Twelve, a thousand years after DOFUS, in a world recovering from the cataclysm caused by the giant Ogrest. You play one of 18 classes (the 19th, the Bellaphone, is planned for the end of 2026).
Classes
Class | Typical role | Short description
Feca | Tank / support | Shields, glyphs, armor
Osamodas | Summoner | Fights with summoned creatures
Enutrof | Support / DPS | Treasure hunter; revamped in Update 1.85 (October 2024)
Sram | Melee DPS | Traps, invisibility, backstabs
Xelor | Control | Time manipulation, AP removal
Ecaflip | Mixed | Luck-based effects
Eniripsa | Healer | The classic healer
Iop | Melee DPS | Straightforward damage
Cra | Ranged DPS | Long-range archer; new alternate spell animations in 1.93
Sadida | Support / summoner | Dolls and poisons; new alternate skins in 1.93
Sacrier | Tank / melee | Uses its own blood; balance changes in 1.93
Pandawa | Tank / placement | Carries allies and enemies; revamped in 1.93
Rogue | Ranged / bombs | Explosives and guns; balance changes in 1.93
Masqueraider | Flexible | Mask stances
Ouginak | Melee DPS | Prey-focused fighter
Foggernaut | Tank / DPS | Rails and mechanical abilities
Eliotrope | Mobility DPS | Portals
Huppermage | Magic DPS | Elemental combos; balance changes in 1.93
Beginner picks: Iop, Cra, and Sacrier are simple; Feca and Eniripsa are great for groups. Xelor, Eliotrope, and Huppermage reward experience.
Turn-based combat
- Fights happen on a tactical grid. Allies and enemies act in turn order based on initiative.
- AP pays for spells, MP for movement, and some classes spend WP on special abilities.
- Positioning matters: many spells care about line of sight, range, facing (back attacks hit harder), and distance.
- Resistances and elements: each enemy has elemental resistances; attacking its weak element is a major damage multiplier.
- Lock and dodge: enemies next to you can "lock" you in place; dodge stats help you escape.
Building a Character
Characteristics
As you level you gain points to spend in five characteristic categories (Intelligence, Strength, Agility, a luck/critical category, and Major). General rules:
- Put Major points where your build needs extra AP, MP, or range once they become available.
- Choose the stat lines that support your role (damage, healing, resistances, lock, dodge).
- Characteristic points can be reset, so experiment.
Spells and elements
- Each class uses three of the four elements, with its own set of elemental spells, plus special spells and passives.
- You choose a limited set of active and passive spells to take into fights (the deck). Build around one or two elements.
- Mastery stats (for example elemental mastery, critical mastery, back mastery) scale damage and healing. Stack the mastery that matches your role.
Equipment and rarities
- Gear rarity climbs from common up through rare, mythic, and legendary, with special tiers such as Relic and Epic items. You can equip only one Relic and one Epic at a time.
- Sublimations are extra effects slotted into gear; many come from dungeon chests and are central to endgame builds.
- Upgrade gear every major level bracket; the World of Twelve's equipment is tiered by level.
Leveling and Progression
Stage | Levels | What to do
Early | 1-50 | Tutorial, main quest, starting zones around Astrub, first professions
Mid | 50-150 | Nation zones, first real dungeons, group play, Havre-Sac customization
Late | 150-230 | Endgame zones such as the Shustuft Crust and Ereboria content
Cap | 230-245 | Misty Isle (five territories and six dungeons, added in Update 1.86 when the cap rose to 245)
Tips:
- Main quests and the daily Almanax content provide steady XP and resources.
- Dungeons give the best loot; do them as you level, not just at cap.
- Many players level several characters together as a team.
Nations and the World
The four nations are Amakna, Bonta, Brakmar and Sufokia. Joining one gives you a political role (governors, militias, elections) and access to nation bonuses. Each nation's territories also have an ecosystem: players can protect or deplete resources, which affects the area.
Professions
- Gathering professions harvest resources such as plants, ore, wood, fish and animal products.
- Crafting professions turn them into equipment, consumables, and potions.
- Leveling a gathering profession alongside a matching crafting profession saves kamas and makes you self-sufficient.
- The Havre-Sac (your pocket base) and Haven Worlds give you personal and guild space to build and grow resources.
Haven Paddock (Update 1.92, improved in 1.93)
- A personal, account-linked space where you place creatures, decorations, fences and resources.
- Creatures have a limited lifespan, so you need to restock them.
- Update 1.93 brought improvements to the Haven Paddock.
Dungeons, Stasis, and Endgame
- Dungeons can be played at different Stasis levels. Higher Stasis makes fights harder and improves rewards.
- Competitive mode ranks your dungeon clears; ranked clears grant dungeon chests.
- Ultimate Bosses are the hardest fights in the game. Examples include Anathar, Tal Kasha, Nox, and the Vengeful Spirit (Update 1.91, level 96 and above).
- Team composition matters: a tank, a healer or shielder, a placer (Pandawa, Feca, Foggernaut) and damage dealers.
End-of-season chests (announced September 2026)
An Ankama devblog (September 2, 2026) announced a rework of dungeon ranking chests, rolling out at midnight on October 1, 2026 (Paris time):
- Chests are received immediately after completing a dungeon in competitive mode, instead of a large payout the following month.
- Only your best rankings count per dungeon: one (the account's highest) for free accounts, the account's three highest for Booster accounts.
- Stacking dozens of ranked alts no longer multiplies rewards, so focus on one strong clear per dungeon.
Current Content: Update 1.93 (September 22, 2026)
- Crimson Dofus quest: requires level 156. Start by talking to the Hullcatz in Ereboria. You travel with an amnesiac Enutrof and eventually face the primordial dragon Ignemikhal. A follow-up quest line asks for higher-Stasis dungeons and rare materials.
- Pandawa class revamp.
- Sacrier, Rogue, and Huppermage balancing.
- Alternate spell animations for Cra, alternate skins for Cra and Sadida.
- New dialogue interface.
- Haven Paddock improvements.
Coming next: the Bellaphone class, a new class tied to the primordial dragons, is planned for WAKFU at the end of 2026.
Currencies
Currency | Use
Kamas | Main in-game money: trading, crafting, marketplace
Ogrines | Premium currency; buys Booster time and cosmetics, and can be traded for kamas via the in-game exchange
F2P tip: many players buy Booster time with kamas via the Ogrine exchange rather than real money.
Servers
Server names you will see include Pandora, Rubilax, and Ogrest (a single-account server that opened on November 2, 2023). Check each server's rules before you commit, especially if you plan to play several characters at once.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spreading into all elements. Pick one or two.
- Ignoring resistances. Hitting an enemy's strong element wastes turns.
- Over-upgrading early gear. It is replaced quickly.
- Skipping professions. They save money and unlock crafting options.
- Fighting without a placement or shield role in higher-Stasis dungeons.
- Rushing Stasis levels. Build gear first; higher Stasis punishes weak teams hard.
Advanced Tips
- Back attacks deal extra damage; circle enemies when you can.
- Lock and dodge matter at higher Stasis. A tank with high lock keeps enemies off the back line.
- Sublimations are where the big build differences come from at endgame. Plan them around your class's key mechanic.
- Multiple characters: a coordinated team of your own characters (on servers that allow it) lets you practice dungeon mechanics efficiently.
- Read the patch notes after each balance update. Class changes can shift optimal builds significantly.
