A practical guide to Ultimate Chicken Horse's party loop: how scoring really works, how to place blocks that win rounds, platforming tech, unlocks, and custom and Challenge levels.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the 10 Year Anni-Fur-Sary Update (May 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • You score by finishing when others don't. If everyone reaches the flag, or nobody does, nobody scores for that round. The whole game is about building a level that is just too hard for your friends but still doable for you.
  • Party Mode is where unlocks happen. Characters, levels and outfits are unlocked by playing the main multiplayer modes (like Party Mode). Challenge levels can be built and played solo, but they don't unlock the roster.
  • Each round has two phases. First everyone picks a block from the Party Box, then you all place your blocks, then you all race. The level keeps growing every round.
  • Traps you placed earn you points when they kill people. A crossbow you place early can keep paying out for many rounds.
  • Wall jumping is the core movement skill. You can climb almost any vertical surface by jumping between walls. Practice it until it's automatic.
  • Don't make the level impossible. A level nobody can finish gives nobody points, which usually helps whoever is already winning.
  • Grab coins only if you can finish. A coin gives bonus points if you carry it to the flag, but you lose it if you die, and there's an achievement for dying with the coin ten times for a reason.
  • Shared controller mode exists. Several people can play on one controller or keyboard by taking turns, which is great for couch play with limited pads.
  • It's cross-platform. Online lobbies work across PC, consoles and mobile, and you can play online with a local friend on the same machine.

What's New (2026)

The 10 Year Anni-Fur-Sary Update (19 May 2026) is the most recent big content drop. Per the official announcement it adds:

Content type | What was added

Blocks | Falling block, Dance mover

Characters | Fox (alt skin: Direwolf), Platypus (alt skin: Toucan), plus outfits

Levels | Picture Frame, Space Station

Music | 2 new tracks

Other | Improvements and bug fixes

Earlier free updates listed on the developer's site include Chimply Amazing, A-Cobra-Tic, Hippo Party Plus, Elephantastic, Pandamonium, Transformidable and Shellebration. Every update has been free for existing owners.

Clever Endeavour's newer game, Ultimate Sheep Raccoon (a bike-racing party game, released 9 December 2025), is a separate purchase. It does not replace Ultimate Chicken Horse; both are supported and sold together in the Build & Race Bundle.

Game Modes

Mode | Players | What it's for

Party | 2-4 (local or online) | The main mode. Random Party Box picks, build-then-race, first to the point target wins. Unlocks characters, levels and outfits.

Free Play | 2-4 | Everyone chooses any block freely instead of drawing from the Party Box. Good for groups that want to build specific traps.

Challenge | 1+ | Build a level, prove it's beatable, and share it. Has global best times across all platforms.

Creative / Level editing | 1-4 | Build freely and save levels to share through level codes.

You can also customise rule sets: point targets, which point types are on, which blocks appear, and more. If your group finds rounds too long or too short, adjust the point target before blaming the game.

Scoring Explained

Points are awarded each round for various achievements. The exact values depend on your rule set, so the table below explains the categories rather than fixed numbers. Check the rule settings screen in your lobby to see and change values.

Point type | How you get it | Notes

Finish (goal) | Reach the flag alive | Only counts if at least one player failed

First | Be the first to reach the flag | Small bonus on top of finishing

Trap | Someone dies to a trap you placed | Rewards smart, lasting placements

Solo | You're the only player to finish | A big swing; the Solo Master achievement asks for 100 of these

Coin | Carry a coin to the flag | Lost if you die holding it

Comeback | Catch-up points for players who are behind | Keeps losing players in contention

Post-mortem | Trap points earned after you already died that round | Your traps keep working after you're dead

Key rule: if all players finish, or if nobody finishes, no one scores. This is why "too easy" and "too hard" levels are both bad for the leader.

Sudden death can trigger when players are close to the target at the same time. There's even an achievement (Clutch Performer) for entering it 20 times.

Movement and Platforming

Technique | How | When it matters

Wall jump | Jump into a wall, then jump again away from it | Climbing shafts, escaping pits

Wall slide | Hold toward a wall while falling | Slows your fall so you can pick a landing

Sprint | Hold the sprint button | Long jumps and gaps; the default speed is shorter

Short hop | Tap jump instead of holding | Threading under saws and low ceilings

Dance | Emote button | Taunting. Doesn't help, but it's tradition

Tips:

  • Hold sprint for distance, release for control. Most deaths on narrow platforms come from over-running.
  • Watch the timing, not the trap. Crossbows, cannons and hockey puck shooters fire on a rhythm. Count it once and then go.
  • Use the whole screen. Wall-jumping up the side of the level or over the top of a trap is often safer than the "intended" route.
  • Don't rush the first second. Letting others go first shows you where the danger is. You lose the First bonus, but you keep your finish points.

Blocks and Placement Strategy

The block library is large and grows with updates. The Party Box offers a random selection each round; the first player to pick gets the best choice, so be decisive.

Common block categories

Category | Examples (verified) | Use

Platforms | Plain blocks, one-way gates, crumbling blocks, the new Falling block | Build routes, or remove safe footing

Projectile traps | Crossbow (arrows), hockey puck shooter, cannons | Timing-based kills from range

Area hazards | Flamethrowers, barbed wire, black holes, beehives | Deny space and punish mistakes

Movement | Teleporters, the Dance mover, punching block | Change routes and momentum

Utility | Glue (attach two blocks together), bomb | Glue makes moving combos; bombs delete blocks

Scoring | Coin | Adds a risk and reward option

Placement rules of thumb

  • Place traps you can personally dodge. Your goal is an obstacle that matches your strengths. If you're the best wall-jumper, make vertical sections.
  • Punish the common route, not every route. Leave one tricky path you know how to take.
  • Protect the flag area late in a match. When you're leading, making the final approach harder than anyone can handle means nobody scores, which preserves your lead.
  • When behind, make it harder. Leaders win when levels are balanced; trailing players benefit from chaos and solo finishes.
  • Bombs are underrated. Removing the platform a rival relies on can be worth more than adding a trap.
  • Glue creates combos. Gluing a trap to a moving platform (the Engineer achievement asks you to glue four blocks) creates a threat that's hard to time.
  • Think about arrow lines. A crossbow placed along a long corridor threatens the whole path, not just one tile.

Characters and Unlocks

All characters play identically. The choice is cosmetic, but it matters for bragging rights. Starting animals include the Chicken, Horse, Sheep and Raccoon. Updates have added more, including the Elephant, Monkey (chimp), Cobra, Hippo and Panda, and in 2026 the Fox and Platypus.

  • Characters, levels and outfits unlock through play in the main modes. Achievements track them: A New Friend Appears, Building A Community (all characters), Young Explorer and Magellan (levels), Gettin' Fancy and Full Wardrobe (outfits).
  • Some unlocks are hidden in levels. Keep an eye out for collectibles in stage backgrounds and odd corners during races.
  • Play more games. Several achievements are simply play-count milestones (10, 30 and 100 games; 10 and 50 online).

Online Play

  • Host a private lobby and share the invite code, or use Steam invites.
  • Cross-play works between PC and consoles; if you ever hit a matchmaking snag, the developers' past fixes have come through patches, so make sure everyone is fully updated.
  • Remote Play Together also works for local-only setups over Steam.
  • You can bring a local friend into an online lobby (the Takin' On the World! achievement).

Custom Levels and Challenge Mode

  • Challenge levels must be completed by the creator before sharing, so every shared challenge is beatable.
  • Global best times are tracked across all platforms on Challenge levels.
  • LevelNET is the in-game hub for browsing shared levels, including developer-featured sets from community build events (for example the Halloween 2025 set of 15 featured levels).
  • Level codes use a short alphanumeric format (like the featured code P44B-7YDS from the Halloween 2025 post). Type them in to load a friend's level directly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Making the level impossible when you're behind. Nobody scores, the leader stays ahead, and you've wasted a round.
  • Picking blocks slowly. The best Party Box options go fast.
  • Chasing every coin. A dead player with a coin scores nothing.
  • Forgetting your own traps. Many players die to the crossbow they placed three rounds ago.
  • Playing every round to be first. Finishing matters much more than the First bonus.
  • Ignoring rule settings. A short target in a group of new players can make games feel random. Tune it.
  • Stacking hazards on the start line. It creates frustration more than scoring, and everyone just dies instantly.

Advanced Tips

  • Read the scoreboard before placing. If one player is close to winning, build specifically against their route.
  • Plan two rounds ahead. Place a platform now that sets up a trap location you want next round.
  • Solo finishes swing games. If you're confident, build a section only you have practised.
  • Use teleporters to reset routes. A teleporter can send players back to a harder section.
  • Barbed wire on landing spots. Put it where people land after a long jump, not where they jump from.
  • Bombs on the critical path. Late in a game, deleting the only safe ledge next to the flag can deny everyone.
  • Practise wall-jump timing in Challenge mode. Solo practice is the fastest way to get better at the actual platforming.

FAQ

Can I play Ultimate Chicken Horse alone? Only partly. You can make and play Challenge levels solo, but unlocking characters and levels needs the multiplayer modes like Party Mode.

How many players does it support? Up to 4 players, online, locally, or mixed, with cross-platform online play.

Is it still getting updates in 2026? Yes. The 10 Year Anni-Fur-Sary Update in May 2026 added the Fox, Platypus, the Falling block, Dance mover and two levels.

Why did nobody get points this round? Either everyone reached the flag or nobody did. Both cases award no points.

What's the difference between Party and Free Play? Party draws random blocks from the Party Box each round; Free Play lets everyone choose from the full library.

Is Ultimate Sheep Raccoon a sequel? It's a separate bike-racing party game from the same studio, released December 2025. It shares the build-then-race idea and some characters, but it's a different game.

How do I play a friend's custom level? Enter their level code in the level browser (LevelNET) to load it.
