Everything you need to survive The Witcher 2's brutal opening hours and make the most of its branching story: combat, skill trees, alchemy, crafting, the Roche-or-Iorveth choice, missables, and difficulty advice.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Enhanced Edition's final PC build (Mac Apple silicon support added November 2023). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Cast Quen constantly. The Quen sign absorbs incoming damage. Early on, recasting it after every hit is the difference between winning and dying.
  • Roll, don't block. Blocking drains Vigor (the same resource used for Signs). Rolling out of attacks is far more reliable, especially against groups.
  • Fight from the edges. Groups surround you fast. Kite enemies so only one or two can reach you at a time.
  • Drink potions before fights. Potions can only be drunk while meditating, not during combat. If a fight is coming, prepare first.
  • Use the right sword. Steel for humans and non-monsters; silver for monsters.
  • Loot and sell. Crowns fund armour and crafting; junk loot is worth selling.
  • Craft armour upgrades early. Better armour from crafters and diagrams cuts the difficulty sharply.
  • Save manually and often. Some choices lock you out of content, and difficulty spikes are harsh.
  • Finish Chapter 1 side quests before leaving Flotsam. You can't return after Chapter 1 ends.

Controls and Combat Basics

Action | Notes

Fast attack | Quick strikes; good for fast, lightly armoured enemies

Strong attack | Slower, more damage; good for armoured enemies

Block/Parry | Drains Vigor; parry and riposte improve with Swordsmanship skills

Roll | Your main defensive tool

Cast Sign | Casts the currently selected Sign

Use item | Throws the selected bomb, dagger, or trap

Quick menu | Held open, it slows time so you can pick Signs, bombs, and traps

Meditate | Drink potions, pass time, and spend talent points

Check the exact bindings (and remap them) in the options; mouse-and-keyboard and controller layouts both work well.

Vigor

Vigor powers Signs and blocking. It regenerates over time, faster out of combat. Skills in the Magic tree boost Vigor.

Signs

Sign | Effect | Use

Aard | Telekinetic blast; knocks down or stuns | Crowd control, breaking walls

Igni | Fire damage | Damage over time, burning enemies

Quen | Absorbs damage | Your best defence

Yrden | Magic trap that immobilises | Kiting, bosses

Axii | Mind control | Turn enemies into allies, dialogue options

Alchemy

  • Potions are drunk only while meditating. They have toxicity; too much toxicity causes negative effects.
  • Key potions: Swallow (health regeneration), Thunderbolt (attack damage), Tawny Owl (Vigor regeneration), Cat (see in the dark), Petri's Philter (Sign power).
  • Oils coat your blade for bonus damage against specific enemies (Necrophage Oil, Specter Oil, Brown Oil, and more). Apply them while meditating or from the inventory before a known fight.
  • Bombs like Grapeshot, Dancing Star, Samum, Devil's Puffball, and Dragon's Dream are thrown in combat.

Crafting

  • Craftsmen in towns craft armour, swords, and upgrades from diagrams and components.
  • Collect ingredients from monsters and loot. Crafted armour is usually stronger than bought armour.
  • Runes and armour enhancements can be added to gear.

Skill Trees

Geralt earns talents each level. You must first spend a few points in Training before the three specialised trees open.

Tree | Focus | Highlights

Training | Basics | Core survivability: extra Vigor, health, and damage resistance

Swordsmanship | Melee | Parry, riposte, group finisher, blade damage

Magic | Signs | Stronger Signs, extra Vigor, upgraded Quen and Aard

Alchemy | Potions and bombs | Longer potions, more toxicity capacity, mutagen boosts

Mutagens can be slotted into certain skills for extra bonuses (damage, Vigor, health, critical effects). Hoard them and slot them into high-value skills.

Suggested Builds

  • Swordsman: Swordsmanship for parry, riposte, and damage; Training for health. Good for players comfortable with timing.
  • Sign master: Magic for Quen, Aard, and Igni upgrades; extra Vigor makes you nearly untouchable.
  • Alchemist: Alchemy for longer, stronger potions and mutagen power; pairs well with Magic for a hybrid.
  • Hybrid (recommended for first playthrough): Training into Magic for Quen and Vigor, then Swordsmanship for damage.

Fighting Common Enemy Types

The Witcher 2 punishes one approach for everything. Adjust per enemy:

Enemy type | Threat | What works

Human soldiers and bandits | Surround you, some carry shields | Steel sword; Aard to knock down then finish; roll behind shield users to hit their backs

Archers and crossbowmen | Chip damage from range while you're busy | Close in with rolls, or knock them down with throwing daggers and Aard

Nekkers | Swarm in large packs, respawn from nests | Silver sword; fight in a narrow spot; destroy nests with a bomb such as Grapeshot

Endregas | Poison and knockdowns | Silver sword; don't trade hits, roll and strike after their attacks

Wraiths and spectres | Hard to hit, drain you in groups | Specter Oil on the silver sword; Yrden to pin them

Large bosses | One hit can remove most of your health | Quen up at all times, potions before the fight, traps and bombs, and patience

General rules: attacks from behind do extra damage, so circle around enemies; knockdowns (from Aard or bombs) open enemies to a finisher; and a Quen shield plus one roll is usually worth more than an extra attack.

Stealth, Minigames, and Side Activities

  • Stealth sections: Some story sections require you to stay undetected. Move slowly behind cover, take down lone guards from behind, and don't start a fight you can't finish; being spotted can fail or escalate the objective.
  • Dice poker: Played in taverns against locals. Bet small until you know how the AI plays; it's an easy source of crowns once you do.
  • Arm wrestling: A timing minigame; keep the marker inside the moving zone.
  • Fist fighting: Quick-time brawls against named fighters for coin and quest progress. Save before betting large sums.
  • Contracts and notice boards: Monster contracts (such as clearing nests) pay well and are the main source of crafting ingredients early on.

Story Walkthrough Outline

Prologue

  • Geralt is imprisoned and recounts events at La Valette Castle, where King Foltest is assassinated by a witcher-like killer (Letho). Geralt is blamed and escapes with Vernon Roche.
  • The prologue has several possible orders of events depending on your choices.

Chapter 1: Flotsam

  • A trading outpost in the forest. Key figures: Loredo (commandant), Iorveth (Scoia'tael leader), and the Kayran, a giant tentacled monster.
  • The Kayran: The first big boss. Use Yrden traps on its tentacles, dodge constantly, and attack exposed tentacles.
  • Key choice: At the end of Chapter 1, you side with Roche or Iorveth. This decides your Chapter 2 path completely.

Chapter 2: Two Paths

Path | Location | Themes

Roche | King Henselt's camp (Kaedwen) | Military politics, siege, Henselt

Iorveth | Vergen (with Saskia the Dragonslayer) | Rebellion, dwarves, curse

Chapter 2 is almost entirely different depending on your path. Play it twice to see all content.

Chapter 3: Loc Muinne

  • A summit of kings and mages. Your choices determine allies and outcomes.
  • The end of Chapter 2 forces a major decision (including Triss's fate); it shapes Chapter 3.

Epilogue

  • Confront Letho. Your choices determine his fate and the ending.

The game has 16 endings depending on your choices.

Missables

  • Chapter 1: All Flotsam side quests become unavailable once you leave Flotsam at the end of the chapter.
  • Chapter 2: Everything on the other path is missed on your current playthrough.
  • Chapter 3: Some quests close once the summit story progresses.
  • Formulae and diagrams: Some merchants only appear in certain chapters.

Difficulty Advice

Difficulty | Notes

Easy | Story focus; forgiving combat

Normal | The Prologue and Chapter 1 are hard; later chapters ease off as you level

Hard | Enemies hit harder; Quen and potions become essential

Dark | Enhanced Edition mode with even harder enemies and special Dark gear sets

Insane | Hard difficulty with permadeath; one death ends the save

The early game is harder than the late game. Geralt starts weak, and many players struggle in the Prologue and Chapter 1. It gets easier once you level up.

Importing Your Witcher 1 Save

  • You can import a Witcher 1 save at the start. This carries over some items and references some choices.
  • The Witcher 3 does not import Witcher 2 saves on PC; instead, a dialogue sequence early in Witcher 3 lets you set key Witcher 2 choices.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Blocking instead of rolling. Blocking drains Vigor.
  • Fighting in the middle of groups. Always stay on the edges.
  • Forgetting potions. They must be drunk before combat.
  • Leaving Chapter 1 with unfinished side quests. They're gone.
  • Neglecting armour. Upgrade it early and often.
  • Charging archers. Close distance using cover and rolling.
  • Ignoring Quen. It's the best defence in the game.

Advanced Tips

  • Riposte: With Swordsmanship upgrades, parry and counter-attack for huge damage.
  • Group Finisher: A Swordsmanship skill that can kill multiple enemies at once.
  • Mutagen stacking: Put damage mutagens into Swordsmanship or Signs for big boosts.
  • Traps and bombs: Great against bosses, especially the Kayran and Draug.
  • Arena Mode: An Enhanced Edition arcade mode with endless waves. Great for practising combat.
  • Backstabs: Attacks from behind deal much more damage. Circle around enemies.
  • Sell crafting leftovers: Weight limits matter; sell excess ingredients.

FAQ

Should I side with Roche or Iorveth? Both are fully realised. Roche focuses on Temerian politics; Iorveth focuses on the Scoia'tael and Vergen. Play both eventually.

Is The Witcher 2 hard? The start is tough, especially the Prologue and Chapter 1. It gets easier with levels and gear.

Can I import my Witcher 2 save into Witcher 3? Not on PC. Witcher 3 asks you questions early on to set Witcher 2 choices.

How long is The Witcher 2? The store page cites over 40 hours of story-driven gameplay, more if you play both paths.

Does The Witcher 2 work on modern systems? Yes, it runs on Windows 10/11, and the Mac version supports Apple silicon since November 2023.

How many endings are there? Sixteen, depending on your choices.
