A player's guide to the original PAYDAY (2011): how heists, hostages, and custody work, which skill trees and equipment to pick, how to approach each job, and how to find a crew in 2026.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC build (Steam app 24240); base game repriced to $9.99 USD on April 14, 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • It's a co-op horde-and-objective shooter. Four heisters (Dallas, Chains, Wolf, and Hoxton) finish a heist's objectives while police assault waves pour in. Stealth barely exists here compared to PAYDAY 2.
  • Don't kill civilians. Killing civilians costs you money at the end of the job. Shout at them to make them get down (the interact/shout key) and they stay put.
  • Tie up hostages. Cable ties turn civilians into hostages. When a teammate ends up in custody, the cops will trade a hostage to get them back. Always have at least one tied hostage.
  • Stay near your crew. When you go down, you bleed out on the floor and a teammate has to revive you. Go down too many times, or bleed out, and you go to custody.
  • Pick one equipment role. Ammo bags, doctor bags, and trip mines are shared tools. Coordinate so the team isn't missing ammo or healing.
  • Kill special units first. Shields, Tasers, Bulldozers, Cloakers, and Snipers are the real threat. Regular SWAT are fodder.
  • Reputation is your level. Finishing heists earns reputation, which unlocks weapons, upgrades, and equipment along the skill trees.
  • Start on Normal. The jump to Hard and especially OVERKILL is steep. Learn each heist's layout first.
  • Bots can fill empty slots. Lobbies are quiet these days, so you can play with AI teammates or invite friends.

Heists

The base game shipped with six heists. Later, the free No Mercy hospital heist and the Wolfpack DLC (Counterfeit and Undercover) brought the total to nine missions.

Heist | Source | Short Brief

First World Bank | Base | A classic bank job. Get into the vault and grab the money.

Heat Street | Base | A deal gone wrong. A long running fight through city streets to your escape.

Panic Room | Base | An apartment block raid. Get into a fortified panic room.

Green Bridge | Base | Break a prisoner out of a transport convoy on a bridge

Diamond Heist | Base | Steal diamonds from a high-rise. The one base heist with a real quiet approach.

Slaughterhouse | Base | Steal gold from a slaughterhouse facility

No Mercy | Free update (2012) | A hospital job to get a blood sample from an infected patient

Counterfeit | Wolfpack DLC | A counterfeit money operation in a suburban house

Undercover | Wolfpack DLC | Interrogating a target while holding off the police

Heist-level tips:

  • Every heist has random elements. Spawn points, some objective locations, and escape details change between runs. Learn the possibilities, not just one route.
  • Drills and timed objectives will jam or stall. Someone has to fix them, so assign a person to watch the drill.
  • Escapes are the most dangerous part. On long running escapes like Heat Street, move as a group and don't stop to loot.

Core Systems

Health, Bleedout, Custody

State | What Happens | How to Recover

Health/armor | Armor absorbs damage first and regenerates. Health doesn't. | Doctor bags restore health.

Downed (bleedout) | You fall and can only shoot a sidearm while the timer runs | A teammate revives you

Custody | You're out of the heist until you're traded | Your team trades a hostage (automatically, once the timer allows)

Each time you go down, you get closer to being sent straight to custody. Doctor bags reset that counter, so use them after repeated downs even if your health is fine.

Hostages and Civilians

  • Shouting makes civilians get down. Cable ties make them hostages (limited supply, more with upgrades).
  • Hostage trading: After a crewmate is taken into custody and the police assault has paused, a tied hostage can be exchanged to bring them back.
  • Civilian kills cut into your payout. Make grenades and trip mines part of the plan, not an accident.

Police Assaults

Police arrive in waves. There are quieter "control" phases between assaults, and those are when you do risky tasks like carrying objectives, resetting drills, and restocking.

Special Unit | Threat | Counter

Shield | Blocks frontal fire with a ballistic shield | Flank it, shoot its exposed side, or use explosives

Taser | Tazes you and locks your aim | Teammates kill it fast. Watch your crew's backs.

Bulldozer | Heavily armored and heavily armed | Focus fire on the faceplate, then the head. Trip mines work well.

Cloaker | Sneaks up and kicks a heister down | Don't wander off alone. Listen for its sound cue.

Sniper | Long-range damage from rooftops | Stay behind cover and kill it with a rifle

Progression and Skill Trees

Reputation levels unlock rewards along four trees:

Tree | Role | Key Unlocks

Assault | Frontline damage | Weapon and ammo upgrades, plus the ammo bag

Sharpshooter | Precision and range | Accuracy-focused weapons and upgrades, plus trip mines

Support | Team sustain | The doctor bag, more cable ties, and support weapons

Technician | Engineer (Wolfpack DLC) | Deployable sentry gun and technician upgrades

Exact weapon placement per tree is listed in-game on the Reputation screen; check it before you pick a tree to rush.

How to level: Reputation comes from completing heists, and higher difficulties pay more. Players often grind the shorter heists on a difficulty they can reliably finish. OVERKILL 145+ is the top difficulty tier and needs reputation level 145.

Crew bonuses: Each heister can bring a crew bonus that helps the whole team (for example, more health or more hostages). Make sure the team doesn't stack the same one.

Weapons and Loadouts

  • Primary: Assault rifles are the most reliable. Shotguns are strong up close and in hallways. Mid-range rifles are best for Snipers and Bulldozers.
  • Secondary: Keep a sidearm you're comfortable with. It's all you can shoot while downed.
  • Equipment: A balanced team brings at least one doctor bag and one ammo bag. Trip mines guard spawn doors and objective corridors. Sentry guns (Technician) hold chokepoints while you work.

Playing With Bots or a Small Crew

With public lobbies quiet, many runs in 2026 are solo-with-bots or two friends plus bots. That changes how you play:

  • You carry the objectives. AI teammates fight and revive, but you should expect to do the drill-fixing, carrying and interacting yourself. Plan your route so you're never far from the objective when an assault starts.
  • Keep the bots close. Bots follow you, so a tight position keeps them useful and makes revives quick. Fighting from a single defensible room works much better than spreading out.
  • Stock hostages yourself. Don't count on anyone else tying civilians. Tie one or two as soon as the heist starts.
  • Bring your own sustain. With no human teammates choosing equipment, a doctor bag or ammo bag is on you. Pick the one your weapons need most.
  • Lower the difficulty for learning. A heist that's comfortable on Hard with a human crew can be a wall with bots. Learn the layouts on Normal first.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Killing civilians in a panic. It costs money and removes potential trade hostages.
  • Running off alone. Cloakers and Tasers punish lone heisters, and nobody can revive you.
  • Letting the drill sit jammed. Somebody always has to watch the objective.
  • Spending the doctor bag too early. Save it for resetting the down counter after repeated downs.
  • Everyone bringing the same equipment. Three ammo bags and no healing loses long heists.
  • Jumping straight to OVERKILL. You'll just lose. Build up the unlocks first.

Advanced Tips

  • Hold a defensive position during assaults, and push objectives during control phases. Ignore the urge to chase kills across the map.
  • Tie a spare hostage early in every heist, even if nobody is in custody yet. That one hostage can save the run later.
  • Trip mine the spawn doors the police flood through in each heist. It thins out the waves.
  • Learn the randomized objective spots for each heist. On high difficulty, knowing where the object might be saves minutes.
  • Split roles: One player holds the objective, two hold the main approach, and one floats and fixes problems. It's the classic OVERKILL setup.
  • Achievements: Many Steam achievements are tied to specific heists or difficulties. Plan achievement runs with a steady group.
