How to get the most out of New World: Aeternum in its last months online: leveling to 70, gearing past 700 Gear Score, the Season 10 Nighthaven endgame, and what the 2026 wind-down changes mean for you.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Season 10: Nighthaven plus the March and June 2026 wind-down patches. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Important: The Game Is Shutting Down

  • Servers go offline permanently on January 31, 2027. Amazon announced this on January 15, 2026.
  • The game was delisted the same day. You can't buy it anymore; existing owners can keep playing until shutdown.
  • Marks of Fortune purchases ended July 20, 2026. Nothing else can be bought in-game either, and past purchases aren't refundable.
  • Season 10: Nighthaven (October 13, 2025) is the final content release (first announced October 28, 2025), and the season has been extended to run until shutdown. 2026 patches only adjust existing content, add QoL, and fix bugs. World bosses and bonus weeks continue until shutdown.

With around four months left, focus on what you actually enjoy — the raids, PvP, or just finishing the story — rather than long-term investments.

Quick Start

  • Follow the Main Story Quest (MSQ). It's the fastest, smoothest path from the shipwreck to level 70, and it unlocks zones and systems in order.
  • Pick two weapons that share an attribute. You carry two at once; pairing them (for example, Strength + Dexterity) keeps your stat build efficient.
  • Join a faction (Marauders, Syndicate, or Covenant) once the MSQ offers it — it unlocks faction missions and PvP.
  • Turn PvP flag on only when you want it. Open-world PvP is opt-in.
  • Gather as you go. Trade skills level passively while questing and supply gear, food, and potions.
  • Eat food buffs. Food gives regen and stat bonuses; always have one active in endgame content.
  • At 70, gear to Gear Score 800. The GS cap is 800 (PvP scales to 775), with the Umbral system handling upgrades past 700.
  • Everything is easier to group for now. 2026 patches cut the player requirement for several raids and trials to five.

Core Systems

Weapons and attributes

There are no classes. Your build is your two equipped weapons plus attributes: Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Focus, Constitution. Since Season 10, every weapon has dual scaling with letter-grade ratings (S to F) showing how well it scales with each attribute. Attribute-boosting perks were removed and those points were folded into your base leveling pool.

Weapon | Traditional stat pairing (check S10 tooltip grades) | Role

Sword and Shield | Strength / Dexterity | Tank, block and stun

Rapier | Dexterity / Intelligence | Evasive melee DPS

Hatchet | Strength | Mobile melee DPS, Berserk

Spear | Dexterity / Strength | Reach, debuffs

Great Axe | Strength | Pull and AoE (the classic Gravity Well)

War Hammer | Strength | Crowd control, tank

Greatsword | Strength / Dexterity | Stance-swapping bruiser

Flail | Strength / Focus | Support melee

Bow | Dexterity | Ranged DPS

Musket | Dexterity / Intelligence | Long-range burst

Blunderbuss | Strength / Intelligence | Close-range burst

Fire Staff | Intelligence | Ranged AoE DPS

Ice Gauntlet | Intelligence | Ranged CC and AoE

Void Gauntlet | Intelligence / Focus | Hybrid DPS / support

Life Staff | Focus | Healer

Check the in-game scaling grades on your weapon tooltips — they are what matter post-Season 10.

Roles in group content

  • Tank: Sword and Shield or War Hammer; heavy armor; hold aggro with taunts.
  • Healer: Life Staff, usually with Flail or Void Gauntlet; Focus-heavy.
  • DPS: Everything else. Pick a pair you enjoy; balance is close enough in PvE at this stage.

Gear progression

  • Gear Score (GS) is your item level. Cap is 800 (PvP scales to 775).
  • Perk Charms (Season 10): gear has up to four sockets — Gem, Defensive, Offensive, and Skill — replacing the old single gem socket.
  • Set bonuses: ultra-rare endgame gear carries flexible 2/4 or 3/5 piece set bonuses, so you can mix sets.
  • Umbral upgrades: above GS 700, gear is upgraded with a currency (wallet cap 4,000, weekly earning limits). This replaced the old gypsum and kiln method. Umbral drops were tripled in June 2026.
  • Artifacts and Heartrunes: artifacts are build-defining items; heartrunes are your ultimate-style ability. Season 10 added the Phantom Blades heartrune to faction shops.
  • Transmog: every appearance is unlocked, so ignore cosmetic drops.

Trade skills

Gathering (Mining, Logging, Harvesting, Skinning, Fishing), Refining (Smelting, Woodworking, Leatherworking, Weaving, Stonecutting), and Crafting (Weaponsmithing, Armoring, Engineering, Jewelcrafting, Arcana, Cooking, Furnishing). With the shutdown date set, level trade skills only if you enjoy them or need specific consumables — buying from the Trading Post is usually faster.

Leveling (1-70)

  • MSQ first. Side quests are optional; the MSQ is tuned to carry you through zones at the right pace.
  • Do Expeditions as they unlock. They give good XP and teach group mechanics.
  • Use bonus weeks. Amazon has kept running bonus events through the wind-down.
  • Don't over-craft gear while leveling. Quest rewards replace everything quickly.
  • Nighthaven is the Season 10 zone — an isolated realm with vertical structures and deliberately light quest guidance. Explore it; it's the last new zone the game will ever get.

Endgame Content

Activity | Size | Notes

Catacombs (Season 10) | 3 players | Procedural dungeon; difficulty rises after each boss. Earn Sterlings throughout and Crowns from the second boss onward. Extract to keep your loot. Find the Catacombs Delver near the inn in Tularest Abbey.

Isle of Night (Season 10 raid) | Now 5+ (originally 10) | Three bosses, puzzles, and set pieces. The hardest PvE in the game.

Hive of Gorgons | Now 5+ | Raid; drops Chromatic Seals since March 2026

Trial of the Devourer, The Hatchery, Winter Rune Forge | Now 5+ | Boss trials

Expeditions (with Mutations) | 5 players | Mutated dungeons scale difficulty and rewards

World bosses | Open world | Continue running until shutdown

Outpost Rush | 8v8 | Objective PvP; new Tower of Calomel map in Season 10

Capture the Flag | 5v5 | Fast objective PvP

Arenas | 1v1 (3v3 when full) | Still labeled "3v3 Arena" in the UI; since June 2026 it runs as 1v1 duels unless enough players queue

Wars | Large-scale | Territory battles

Isle of Night tips

  • Run it with voice comms; the puzzle and set-piece phases punish silent groups.
  • With the 5-player minimum, two healers is often safer than one while learning.
  • Bring food, potions, and coatings — endgame consumables are cheap on the Trading Post.

Catacombs tips

  • Extraction is the core decision. The deeper you go, the more you risk losing.
  • Clear the first boss cleanly to learn your team's damage before pushing deeper.
  • Crowns only start dropping from the second boss onward.

Making the Most of the Final Months

A practical checklist for the time left before January 31, 2027:

If you want to... | Do this

See the ending of the story | Push the MSQ to 70, then play through Nighthaven. It's the last zone the game will get.

Experience the hardest PvE | Clear Isle of Night now that five players can run it, and farm Hive of Gorgons for Chromatic Seals.

Hit max Gear Score | Take advantage of the 3x Territory and Umbral drops from the June 2026 patch and spend Umbrals every week so you don't waste the weekly earning limit.

Play PvP | Queue Outpost Rush (8v8) and Capture the Flag (5v5) in NA or EU; rotation is off on the SA and APAC servers. Duel in the Arena if 3v3 won't fill.

Play with friends on another region | Use a region transfer (enabled March 2026) instead of starting over.

Finish achievements | Missing Steam achievements were granted retroactively in March and June 2026, so check which ones you still need.

What not to bother with: grinding gold, playing the Trading Post for profit, leveling crafting just to sell, or saving rare mats "for later". There is no later — use or sell everything.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Treating gold or items as long-term investments. Everything goes offline January 31, 2027. Spend freely.
  • Trying to buy Marks of Fortune. Purchases ended July 20, 2026.
  • Stacking one attribute blindly. Post-Season 10, check each weapon's dual-scaling grades.
  • Skipping food buffs in Expeditions and raids.
  • Leveling crafting to 250 just to make gear you can buy.
  • Staying on a dead server. Region transfers are enabled; move to a population that can fill raids and PvP.
  • Queuing OPR/CTF on SA or APAC servers. Rotation is disabled there since June 2026.

Advanced Tips

  • Use the extra gear set slots. Keep a PvE tank/healer/DPS loadout and a PvP loadout ready.
  • Plan Umbral spending around weekly caps. Upgrade the pieces with the biggest stat impact first (weapons, then key armor).
  • Mix set bonuses. The 2/4 and 3/5 thresholds mean two partial sets often beat one full set.
  • Perk Charm sockets are the late-game min-max. Fill offensive and skill sockets on DPS gear before chasing tiny GS gains.
  • Smaller raid groups mean mechanics matter more — every player covers more roles, so pick flexible weapons.
  • Wars have higher merc caps now, making them easier to join as a mercenary even outside a big company.
