A complete guide to Veewo Games' roguelike run-and-gun Neon Abyss: how runs and resources work, eggs and pets, item stacking, the Violence and Wisdom paths to the secret eighth floor, the New Gods you will fight, meta progression, difficulty tiers, and achievement tips.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the October 2025 Unity security patch, the most recent update to the original game. The sequel Neon Abyss 2 is in Early Access. Check the linked sources if something differs.
Status: Neon Abyss (July 2020) is complete; its last update was an October 2025 patch for a Unity security vulnerability, so update the game if you have not played in a while. Neon Abyss 2 entered Early Access on 17 July 2025 with up to four-player online co-op, a Faith system that evolves this game's Violence and Wisdom mechanics, and a new weapon system; its Steam page lists a planned full release on 8 October 2026. This guide covers the original.
Quick Start
- Items stack with no limit. Every passive item's effect stacks with every other, which is the whole point of the game. Pick up almost everything.
- Keys, bombs, coins and crystals are your run economy. Keys open locked chests and doors, bombs open secret walls and damage enemies, coins buy from shops, and crystals open crystal chests and special doors and feed altars.
- Hatch every egg you can. Eggs hatch into pets that fight or help you, and pets evolve the longer you survive. Stacking many pets is a legitimate build.
- Bomb suspicious walls. Secret rooms are common and often hold strong items. The achievements "Sherlock" and "Demolition Expert" track them.
- Watch the red and purple bars. These are the Violence (red) and Wisdom (purple) meters that decide which hidden god you can reach on the eighth floor.
- Use active items every room. Active items recharge as you clear rooms, so do not save them for bosses only.
- Deaths still progress you. Meta progression unlocks new characters, rooms, items and options between runs, so every run counts.
- Try the mini-games. Piano, dancing, meditation, fishing and roulette rooms give loot and several achievements.
Run Structure
A run is a descent through procedurally generated floors of rooms, each with enemies, chests, shops, special rooms and a boss. The bosses are the New Gods, each ruling a modern interest.
Boss | Notes
Argus, God of Darknet | An early god; "Action Supremacist" asks you to beat him without picking up any items
Hal, God of Machines | "Pro Gamer" asks you to beat him without taking damage
Zeus, God of Electricity | The gatekeeper: defeat him while holding a god token to open the portal to the eighth floor
Ares, God of Violence | Hidden eighth-floor boss reached with the red token
Athena, Goddess of Illusion | Hidden eighth-floor boss reached with the purple token
First-kill achievements exist for each of these gods, so your first clears double as progress markers.
Violence, Wisdom and the Eighth Floor
The two hidden bosses are gated behind tokens earned from two meters:
Path | How to fill the meter | Reward
Violence (red) | Damaging shop doors, shooting purple chests, activating red crystals, and taking damage in combat rooms | Earn the red token, which leads to Ares
Wisdom (purple) | Opening crystal-locked doors with crystals, opening crystal chests, and clearing rooms without taking damage | Earn the purple token, which leads to Athena
Route: fill one meter to earn its token, then defeat Zeus, God of Electricity. A portal opens to the eighth floor where Ares or Athena waits.
Tip: Decide your path early. If you are playing cleanly and saving crystals, go Wisdom. If you are brawling and blowing doors open, go Violence.
Resources and Pickups
Resource | Use
Hearts and heart containers | Health; "Rugged Tenacity" wants eight heart containers in one run
Shields | Extra hit protection; "Shields Up!" wants eight in one run
Coins | Buy items in shops and play machines
Keys | Open locked chests and doors ("Key Master" is 999 locked chests)
Bombs | Blow open secret rooms and damage enemies (watch your own blast radius)
Crystals | Open crystal chests and some doors; offer to altars; key to the Wisdom path
Eggs | Hatch into pets; some items make enemies drop more eggs
Deals: Smirk Co. offers trades that can be powerful but costly ("Dark trade" wants 99 deals).
Characters and Meta Progression
Neon Abyss has a roster of Grim Squad members. According to community achievement guides, the base game has six characters to unlock (ten in total with DLC), and each is unlocked through the meta-progression skill trees using gems earned from runs. Individual characters change the game significantly: for example, R-6 has no health containers and does not heal from mouldy hearts, which makes him the go-to pick for the "I'm Fine" achievement.
The skill trees also unlock new rooms (such as the fishing room), items and features. Prioritise unlocks that add useful room types and shop improvements early, then characters.
Difficulty Tiers
- The lower difficulties are where you learn the bosses and paths.
- Hard adds a progression track: defeating both Ares and Athena on Hard with the same character earns progress dots, and five dots unlock Abyssal difficulty.
- Abyssal is the top challenge. "The Real Game" is the achievement tied to unlocking it, and the hidden "Ultimate Challenge" is the hardest achievement in the list; check the community achievement guide for its exact condition before attempting it.
Building a Run
Because every effect stacks, most strong runs come from combining a handful of effects:
- Damage multipliers plus extra projectiles for raw DPS.
- Pet-heavy builds with many eggs hatched and evolved.
- Defensive stacks (shields and heart containers) for no-damage or high-difficulty runs.
- Economy stacks (items that give extra coins, keys or crystals) to empty every shop.
Rules of thumb:
- Take weapons with mechanics you can use safely; a slower, stronger weapon is often better against bosses.
- Buy items that multiply existing effects when you already have a strong base.
- Do not skip shops when you have coins; "Shopping Maniac" wants four shops emptied in one run.
Mini-Games and Special Rooms
Room | What it offers | Achievement
Piano | Rhythm challenge with loot | "Piano Virtuoso" (ten completions)
Dance (bar) | Dance challenge | "Saturday Night Fever" (hidden; community guides say it requires dancing continuously for 30 minutes without minimising the game)
Fishing room | Fish for loot | "Fishing Joy" (ten catches)
Roulette machine | Gamble coins | "Born Gambler" (99 plays)
Meditation | Stillness challenge | none directly
Smirk Co. | Deals | "Dark trade"
Your First Ten Runs: A Plan
- Runs 1 to 3: play for information. Open every room, bomb walls that look suspicious, and learn how Argus and the early floors behave. Do not worry about dying.
- Runs 4 to 6: start spending gems in the skill trees on things that widen the item pool and add room types. More room variety means more chances at strong items.
- Runs 7 to 10: pick a path each run. On a careful run, save crystals and avoid damage to fill Wisdom; on an aggressive run, bash shop doors and brawl to fill Violence. Grab the token and push past Zeus.
- After your first eighth-floor clear: unlock more characters and start the Hard-mode dot track toward Abyssal.
Boss habits that apply to every god: stay mobile on the platforms rather than tanking on the floor, learn each attack's tell before being greedy, and save one bomb or active item for emergencies. Many patterns get easier with a second jump or flight, so value mobility items highly.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Hoarding active items. They recharge; use them.
- Ignoring secret rooms. Bomb walls that look off; secret rooms are a major item source.
- Burning crystals randomly. If you want Athena, crystals are your Wisdom fuel.
- Taking needless damage on a Wisdom run. Clean room clears feed the purple meter.
- Skipping eggs. Pets snowball over time and are free power.
- Blowing yourself up. Bombs hurt you too ("Don't Panic" is an achievement for exactly that).
Advanced Tips
- For "Sovereign of Eggs" (50 eggs in a run), look for the Knife and Fork item, which raises egg drop chance from melee kills.
- For "Safety First" (a no-damage run), community guides note that force-closing and reopening puts you back at the start of the floor; use it sparingly as a practice tool.
- For "Pro Gamer" (Hal without damage), learn his patterns on normal runs first.
- For "The Real Game", earn the five Hard-mode dots (beat both Ares and Athena on Hard with the same character) to unlock Abyssal difficulty.
- For "Acrobatic" (hidden), community guides say you must be killed by your own bomb while airborne on Medium difficulty or higher.
- Chain secret rooms for "Sherlock" (five in a row) by bombing every suspicious wall on a floor.
DLC
DLC | Released | What it is
Lovable Rogues Pack | 22 July 2020 | Two extra characters (Titan's experiments) with their own abilities
Soundtrack | 24 September 2020 | 15 tracks from the game
Alter Ego | 1 April 2021 | Alternative looks (and, per Wikipedia, new abilities) for the playable characters
Chrono Trap | 27 January 2022 | A new Endless Mode and the Titan Chronos
Which DLC is worth it? Chrono Trap is the only one that adds a new mode, so it is the best pick once you have beaten the eighth floor a few times. Lovable Rogues is a cheap way to add characters.
FAQ
Is Neon Abyss still updated? Only for maintenance. Its latest patch (October 2025) fixed a Unity security issue. New content goes into Neon Abyss 2.
Should I play Neon Abyss or Neon Abyss 2? The original is complete and cheap. Neon Abyss 2 is in Early Access (full release planned for 8 October 2026) and adds online co-op for up to four players, the Faith system, the Hatchmon pet system and a new weapon system that includes melee weapons.
How do I reach the secret bosses? Fill the Violence or Wisdom meter, grab the matching token from an altar room, then beat Zeus to open the eighth-floor portal.
How do I unlock new characters? Spend gems earned from runs in the meta-progression skill trees; characters cost gems to unlock.
Is there co-op? The original is single-player. Online co-op arrived in Neon Abyss 2.
How many achievements are there? The store page lists 35 Steam achievements.
