A guide to Halo Infinite's free-to-play multiplayer and paid campaign. It covers the game's current support status, weapons and equipment, ranked play, the Operation pass, and a campaign walkthrough outline with skull locations.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Operation: Infinite (November 18, 2025), the last major content update Halo Studios has planned. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status in 2026: Read This First

  • Operation: Infinite is the last planned major update. Halo Studios says the whole team is now focused on other projects, including Halo: Campaign Evolved, which was announced at the Halo World Championship 2025.
  • The game is still online and supported. Servers, matchmaking, and Forge remain up. The studio said challenges, ranked seasons, community events, and monthly shop rotations would continue through 2026. Just don't expect new maps or modes.
  • Operation: Infinite's passes never expire. You can still earn everything in them.

Quick Start

  • Multiplayer is free; the campaign is sold separately. The campaign also supports online co-op and Mission Replay.
  • Play Academy first. The Weapon Drills and bot matches teach recoil, kill times, and weapon ranges without pressure.
  • Your starting kit is the MA40 Assault Rifle plus the Mk50 Sidekick pistol. Learn to finish kills with a melee after a shield pop. That's the core Halo skill.
  • Control power weapons and equipment. Rockets, Sniper, Energy Sword, Overshield, and Active Camo decide most Arena games. The game announces and marks them shortly before they spawn.
  • Don't sprint around corners into fights. Sprinting lowers your weapon and shows you on enemy motion trackers, so you lose the first shot. Sprint to rotate, not to engage.
  • Shoot for the head after the shield breaks. Precision weapons (BR75, Sidekick, Commando, Sniper) do bonus damage to heads once the shield is down.
  • Stick with your team. Team shooting (two players on one target) wins far more fights than solo aim.
  • Grind the Operation pass while it's on 2X. Operation: Infinite brought double Career Rank progress and double Spartan Points from challenges.

Game Modes

Mode | What it is

Quick Play | 4v4 Arena mix (Slayer, Strongholds, CTF, Oddball, King of the Hill)

Ranked Arena | 4v4 competitive with visible CSR (Bronze → Silver → Gold → Platinum → Diamond → Onyx)

Ranked Doubles, other ranked playlists | Rotating smaller ranked queues; formats change with each Ranked Season

Big Team Battle | 12v12 with vehicles on large maps

Husky Raid | Fast CTF on small maps (the Yuletide map supports it)

Firefight / Firefight: Gauntlet | 4-player PvE. Gauntlet has boss waves and upgradable Speed, Resistance, Regeneration, and Damage attributes

Infection, Extraction, Squad Battle, rotating events | Casual rotating modes

Forge / Custom Games | Community maps and modes, browsable in-game

Weapons: What to Pick Up

Role | Weapons | Notes

Starter | MA40 AR, Mk50 Sidekick | AR for close range; pistol for precision at mid range

Precision (mid-long) | BR75 Battle Rifle, VK78 Commando, Stalker Rifle (plasma), S7 Sniper, Skewer | BR is the Arena standard. Skewer deals huge vehicle damage

Close range | CQS48 Bulldog, Mangler, Heatwave, Energy Sword, Gravity Hammer | Sword and Hammer are power weapons

Plasma / shield strippers | Plasma Pistol, Pulse Carbine, Needler, Sentinel Beam | Plasma strips shields fast; a charged Plasma Pistol shot drains a shield or disables vehicles

Explosive | M41 SPNKr (Rockets), Hydra, Cindershot, Ravager | Rockets and Hydra lock onto vehicles

Anti-vehicle | Shock Rifle, Disruptor | Shock/electric damage stuns vehicles and chains between enemies

Kinetic weapons are better against health; plasma is better against shields; shock is better against vehicles.

Equipment

Equipment | Use

Grappleshot | Traversal, pulling weapons to you, closing distance for a melee

Repulsor | Bounces grenades, vehicles, and players, and knocks back sword and hammer lunges

Threat Sensor | Throwable that reveals enemies through walls

Thruster | Short directional dodge

Drop Wall | Deployable cover for revives, holding hills, or blocking a sniper

Overshield | Power item: extra shield layer

Active Camo | Power item: near-invisibility (the motion tracker still shows you if you fire or sprint)

Arena Maps and Rotations

Arena staples include Live Fire, Recharge, Streets, Aquarius, Bazaar, Behemoth, Catalyst, Argyle, Empyrean, Forbidden, Prism, Solitude. Operation: Infinite added Vacancy (an asymmetrical hotel-courtyard map for Ranked modes) and Yuletide (an alpine village for Quick Play and Husky Raid). BTB rotates Fragmentation, Deadlock, Highpower, Breaker, and community Forge maps.

On any map, learn:

  • Where power weapons and power items spawn, and their timers.
  • The two or three "power positions" (high ground with cover).
  • Which spawns flip when your team pushes too far.

Progression and Currencies

Thing | What it is | How you get it

Operation passes | Free and premium reward tracks that never expire | Match XP and challenges

Operation: Infinite pass | 100-tier free pass (Serpin, Seeker, Adamant armor sets) plus 100-tier premium pass (five more armor sets and six weapon models) | XP and challenges

Career Rank | Long-term rank with cosmetic rewards | Match XP (doubled during Operation: Infinite)

Spartan Points (SP) | Currency for The Exchange | Daily and weekly challenges. The Weekly Ultimate reward was raised to 2,000 SP

The Exchange | Rotating store of older cosmetics, bought with SP | Operation: Infinite added 200+ never-released items

Credits | Paid currency for the shop and premium passes | Real money only

F2P tips:

  • Do your weekly challenges every week. The Weekly Ultimate SP is the best free currency source.
  • Check the Exchange before you spend Credits, because many older items rotate in there for SP.
  • Don't buy premium passes for XP boosts. Buy them only for the cosmetics you actually want.

Ranked Tips

  • CSR is your visible rank. You place after a few matches, and hidden MMR drives gains and losses.
  • Competitive playlists use input-based matchmaking, so controller and mouse-and-keyboard players have separate pools.
  • Win the first power weapon or item fight. Stack your team near Rockets or Overshield about 20 seconds before it spawns.
  • Call shots. "One-shot top mid" is the most valuable callout in Halo.
  • Don't feed. In Slayer, a 1v1 you're losing is also a free kill for them. Back off to your team and let your shield recharge.
  • In Strongholds, hold two zones, not three. Chasing the third zone is how teams get split and lose.

Settings (PC)

  • FOV: most players raise it to between 90 and 110 for awareness.
  • Controller: lower the inner deadzone until your crosshair drifts slightly, then raise it a notch. Tune look acceleration in small steps and test in Academy.
  • Mouse: turn off in-game acceleration. Pick a sensitivity that lets you turn 180° in one comfortable swipe.
  • Graphics: lower "Minimum Framerate" or turn off dynamic resolution if you get blurry spikes. Keep "Async Compute" on if it's stable on your GPU.
  • Audio: turn Spartan chatter down and footstep-relevant effects up. Headphones matter.

Campaign Walkthrough Outline

Master Chief lands on Zeta Halo, which the Banished now control. After the linear opening, the ring opens into a semi-open world. Collectibles there include Spartan Cores (to upgrade your equipment), Mjolnir Armor Lockers, audio logs, Forward Operating Bases (fast travel, plus weapon and vehicle requisition), Banished outposts, High Value Targets, and propaganda towers.

# | Mission | Notes

1 | Warship Gbraakon | Linear tutorial. Boom Skull is here

2 | Foundation | Get the Grappleshot. Cowbell Skull

3 | Outpost Tremonius | Open world begins after this

4 | Recovery | FOB and Zeta Halo intro

5 | The Tower |

6 | Excavation Site |

7 | Conservatory |

8 | Spire |

9 | Pelican Down |

10 | The Sequence | Find the beacons across the map

11 | Nexus |

12 | The Command Spire | Mythic Skull

13 | Repository | Grunt Birthday Party Skull

14 | The Road |

15 | House of Reckoning |

16 | Silent Auditorium | Bandana Skull. Final mission

Missables: after the late-game missions, the open world is permanently changed, and some areas become unreachable. Since the Winter Update (2022), Mission Replay lets you return to finished missions to pick up collectibles you missed, so nothing is truly lost.

Skull locations

Skull | Effect | Where

Boom | Doubles explosion radius | Warship Gbraakon

Cowbell | More acceleration from explosions | Foundation

Grunt Birthday Party | Grunt headshots set off celebrations | Repository

Bandana | Unlimited ammo and grenades, no equipment cooldown | Silent Auditorium

Thunderstorm | Upgrades the rank of most enemies | Overworld, accessible after The Sequence (see Halopedia for the exact spot)

Fog | Disables motion tracker | Overworld, west of FOB Alpha

Blind | Hides HUD and weapon | Overworld, south of Ransom Keep

IWHBYD | Rare combat dialogue more common | Overworld, atop the Tower

Famine | Enemy-dropped weapons have half ammo | Overworld, accessible after The Sequence (see Halopedia for the exact spot)

Black Eye | Shields recharge only when you melee | Overworld, in a waterfall cave area

Catch | Enemies throw and drop more grenades | Overworld, northern island past Outpost Tremonius

Difficulty and campaign tips

  • Difficulties are Easy, Normal, Heroic, and Legendary. Heroic is the intended "real Halo" experience.
  • Put your first Spartan Cores into the Grappleshot and Shield Core. A faster grapple cooldown and stronger shields make Legendary far more manageable.
  • Rescue marines and capture FOBs. Valor unlocks better weapons and vehicles at FOBs, like a Scorpion or Wasp for bosses.
  • Grapple onto enemy vehicles to hijack them. It's the fastest way to deal with Banished armor.
  • Boss fights: keep moving, use the Threat Sensor against Jega's camo, and bring plasma weapons for shielded Brute bosses.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Sprinting into fights with your weapon lowered (and showing up on radar).
  • Chasing a kill into the enemy's spawn alone.
  • Ignoring power weapon timers in Arena.
  • Sitting on a Sniper in close-quarters maps where a BR or Bulldog would do more.
  • Spending Credits on items that rotate into the Exchange for free Spartan Points.
  • Trying to play Legendary without upgrading the Grappleshot.

Advanced Tips

  • Grenade-melee combos: a frag or plasma grenade plus a few AR shots leaves most Spartans one melee from death.
  • Crouch-jump reaches ledges you can't reach normally, and slide-jumping carries your momentum while rotating.
  • Repulsor timing: stops sword lunges, hammer swings, and incoming Ghosts.
  • Forge browser: some of the best current content is community-made, like Warzone-style modes, races, and Infection variants. Check the Forge Features spotlights.
