A guide to Half-Life 2 and its two Episodes: a chapter-by-chapter outline, weapons and enemies, secrets and achievements, difficulty advice, and the best way to play it on a modern PC in 2026.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the July 23, 2025 Steam update (the 20th Anniversary Update from November 2024 is the last big content change). Check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • One purchase gets you everything. Since the 20th Anniversary Update (November 2024), Half-Life 2: Episode One and Episode Two are included in the Half-Life 2 app. Pick them from the main menu after the base game.
  • The Gravity Gun is the star. Once you have it (Black Mesa East), almost anything loose is ammo: saw blades, paint cans, radiators, explosive barrels.
  • Quicksave often (F6), quickload with F9. The game autosaves at checkpoints, but quicksaves before big fights save a lot of replaying.
  • Look for Lambda symbols. Orange Lambda graffiti marks hidden supply caches (45 in the base game) with ammo, health, and batteries.
  • Keep your suit charged. Suit power (HEV armor) absorbs damage. Wall-mounted health chargers and suit chargers refill each separately. Sprinting and the flashlight drain the aux power bar in the base game.
  • Shoot explosive red barrels, not enemies, when groups cluster. Or throw them with the Gravity Gun.
  • Crouch-jump (jump, then crouch in the air) reaches ledges that a normal jump won't.
  • Hard is the sweet spot for experienced FPS players. Normal is fine for a first run.

Controls (Default)

Quicksave / Quickload | F6 / F9

Developer console | ~ (enable it under Options > Keyboard > Advanced)

Weapons

Slot | Weapon | Best use

1 | Crowbar, Gravity Gun | Crowbar for crates and headcrabs. The Gravity Gun throws objects (Mouse1 punts, Mouse2 grabs)

2 | 9mm Pistol, .357 Magnum | Pistol for Manhacks and weak targets. The Magnum hits hard, but ammo is scarce

3 | SMG (grenade launcher on alt-fire), Overwatch Pulse Rifle (AR2; alt-fire launches an energy ball) | The AR2's energy ball instantly kills most soldiers and bounces around rooms

4 | Shotgun (alt-fire shoots both barrels), Crossbow | The shotgun is the best close-range gun. The crossbow one-shots most humans and pins them to walls

5 | Grenades, RPG (laser-guided) | Guide the RPG with your aim and steer it around Gunship countermeasures

6 | Bugbait | Controls Antlions: throw it to send them, squeeze it (Mouse2) to call them back

Notable pickups: the crowbar in "A Red Letter Day", the Gravity Gun in Black Mesa East, the shotgun from Father Grigori in Ravenholm, the RPG from Colonel Odessa Cubbage in Highway 17, and Bugbait in Sandtraps.

Enemies and How to Handle Them

Enemy | Tip

Headcrabs (normal, fast, poison) | Crowbar them. Poison headcrabs drop you to 1 HP, but the damage regenerates, so back off and wait

Zombies (and Fast/Poison Zombies) | Headshots, or throw saw blades with the Gravity Gun (the Ravenholm classic)

Barnacles | Shoot the body hanging from the ceiling. Or feed one an explosive barrel

Metrocops and Combine Soldiers | Use cover. Their grenades can be thrown back with the Gravity Gun

Manhacks | Grab them with the Gravity Gun and use them as a buzzsaw, or crowbar them

Antlions and Antlion Guards | Stay off the sand in Sandtraps (it spawns Antlions). Antlion Guards need explosives or heavy objects

Hunter-Chopper and Gunship | RPG or the chopper's own dropped bombs (Gravity Gun). Gunships shoot down rockets, so curve your shot around them

Striders | Use the RPG in HL2. In Episode Two's finale, use the Magnusson Device

Chapter Walkthrough Outline

Half-Life 2 (14 chapters)

# | Chapter | What happens / key tips

1 | Point Insertion | Arrive in City 17. No weapons. Explore and pick up the atmosphere. Can-and-trashcan achievements happen here

2 | "A Red Letter Day" | Kleiner's lab, HEV suit, crowbar. Escape through the rooftops

3 | Route Kanal | On foot through the canals. Get the pistol and SMG, learn physics puzzles

4 | Water Hazard | Airboat chase. The Hunter-Chopper fight gets easier once the airboat gun is mounted

5 | Black Mesa East | Meet Eli and Alyx. Get the Gravity Gun and play catch with Dog

6 | "We Don't Go To Ravenholm..." | Horror town full of zombies. Saw blades plus the Gravity Gun. Father Grigori gives you the shotgun

7 | Highway 17 | Scout Car along the coast. Antlions begin. Colonel Cubbage gives you the RPG for the Gunship

8 | Sandtraps | Stay on rocks and debris, off the sand. Kill the Antlion Guard to get Bugbait

9 | Nova Prospekt | Prison assault with Antlions as your army. Turrets defend chokepoints

10 | Entanglement | Escort Alyx and use turrets. Ends at the teleporter

11 | Anticitizen One | City 17 is in open revolt. The first Striders appear. Lead your rebel squad

12 | "Follow Freeman!" | Heavy urban combat. Rockets for Striders from supply crates

13 | Our Benefactors | The Citadel. Your weapons are destroyed and the Gravity Gun is supercharged: fling Combine soldiers and energy balls

14 | Dark Energy | Final confrontation with Breen at the top of the Citadel

Episode One (5 chapters)

Undue Alarm → Direct Intervention → Lowlife → Urban Flight → Exit 17. You escape the collapsing Citadel with Alyx at your side the whole way. Lowlife is a dark, flashlight-heavy zombie section: save ammo and let Alyx shoot while you light targets.

Episode Two (7 chapters)

To the White Forest → This Vortal Coil → Freeman Pontifex → Riding Shotgun → Under the Radar → Our Mutual Fiend → T-Minus One. Highlights: antlion caves, a new muscle car, Hunters (fast flechette-shooting Combine units that die fast to thrown objects and car ramming), and a finale defending White Forest from Striders with the Magnusson Device. Stick it to a Strider with the Gravity Gun, then shoot it to detonate. Kill the escorting Hunters first.

Secrets, Collectibles, and Achievements

  • Lambda caches: 45 in the base game. Finding all of them unlocks Lambda Locator. Many are behind crates, on rooftops, or under water. Crouch-jumping and stacking boxes with the Gravity Gun gets you to most.
  • Easy early achievements in Point Insertion and "A Red Letter Day":
  • Defiant: hit the trashcan cop with the can.
  • Submissive: put the can in the trash when told.
  • Malcontent: escape the apartment block raid.
  • What cat?: break the mini-teleporter in Kleiner's lab.
  • Trusty Hardware: get the crowbar.
  • Challenge achievements:
  • Zombie Chopper: get through Ravenholm using only the Gravity Gun (don't fire any other weapon).
  • Keep Off the Sand!: cross the antlion beach in Sandtraps without touching the sand.
  • Barnacle Bowling: kill five barnacles with one barrel.
  • Zero-Point Energy: get the Gravity Gun.
  • Enabling cheats (sv_cheats 1) disables achievements, so turn it off and reload a save before chasing them.

Difficulty Advice

  • Easy / Normal / Hard can be changed any time in Options. Hard makes enemies deal more damage and take less, so ammo and health go faster.
  • On Hard, save Magnum and crossbow ammo for Combine Elites and soldiers, and use the Gravity Gun as your main weapon whenever the room has props.
  • Let rebels and medics in your squad (Anticitizen One onward) soak damage. Medics throw you health kits when you're hurt.

Playing on a Modern PC (2026)

  • It runs fine out of the box. The 20th Anniversary Update (November 15, 2024) brought bug fixes and new higher-fidelity graphics options, about three and a half hours of new base-game developer commentary, and integrated Steam Workshop support (in the Extras menu). Follow-up patches added a gamepad stick sensitivity slider and fixed aim-assist scaling. The July 2025 patch restored the original Highway 17 train speed and fixed Entanglement NPC blocking issues.
  • Half-Life 2 RTX is a separate free demo on Steam, a path-traced RTX Remix remaster by the community team Orbifold Studios. It needs a capable NVIDIA RTX GPU.
  • Mods worth trying: Half-Life 2: Update (lighting and fixes), Entropy: Zero 2 (a standalone free Combine-perspective campaign), and MMod (weapon and combat overhaul). The Steam Workshop now hosts many campaign mods you can load directly.
  • Story continues in Half-Life: Alyx (VR, 2020), which is set before Half-Life 2 but ends by reframing Episode Two's finale.
  • Also in the Steam library: Half-Life 2: Lost Coast (a tech-demo level) and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting to use the Gravity Gun. Most fights in Ravenholm, Highway 17, and Our Benefactors are easier with it than with bullets.
  • Shooting an RPG straight at a Gunship. It gets shot down, so curve your aim to bring the rocket in from the side.
  • Walking on the sand in Sandtraps before you have Bugbait.
  • Wasting Hunter-Chopper time: in Water Hazard, just keep moving until the airboat gets its gun.
  • Leaving squad members in the open. Send them (C) to cover before a Strider fight.
  • Skipping the Episodes. Episode Two's ending sets up the story Half-Life: Alyx follows.

Advanced Tips

  • Crouch-jump plus prop-stacking reaches almost every Lambda cache and plenty of optional shortcuts.
  • Punt vs. throw: a Gravity Gun punt (Mouse1) with nothing held knocks back and damages enemies at point-blank range.
  • Grenade juggling: catch Combine grenades with the Gravity Gun (Mouse2) and throw them back.
  • Console quality of life: cl_showfps 1 shows your framerate, and fov_desired sets FOV (the anniversary update added FOV options to the menu too).
