How to survive the Rook Islands as Jason Brody: early priorities, crafting and hunting, skill trees, outposts, the story's key choice, collectibles, and what still works now that multiplayer is gone.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC build (subtitle fix June 2023, Steam achievements added January 2025; online multiplayer and co-op shut down September 1, 2022). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Status note: Far Cry 3's multiplayer and co-op were shut down on September 1, 2022. The single-player campaign is unaffected. When Steam achievements arrived in January 2025, Ubisoft removed the six multiplayer achievements ("Ready or Not", "Sidetracked", "Overboard", "Lights Out", "Rush Hour", "Payback") so 100% is still achievable.
Quick Start
- Craft a Weapon Holster first. You start with limited weapon slots. Hunting animals for the holster upgrades is the single biggest early power spike.
- Climb radio towers. Each tower reveals the surrounding map and unlocks free weapons at shops.
- Liberate outposts quietly. Taking an outpost without being detected pays bonus XP. Liberated outposts become fast-travel points and safe zones.
- Tag everything with the camera. Your camera marks enemies through walls. Scout every outpost before going in.
- Pick a skill tree direction. Takedowns from the Spider tree and health from the Shark tree carry the early game.
- Loot bodies and chests. Cash buys weapons and attachments; loot items (like wallets, rings, and trinkets) are junk you sell.
- Craft healing syringes. Green Leaf becomes Medicine; keep a few on hand.
- Use the environment. Release caged animals in outposts to maul enemies. Shoot alarm panels to prevent reinforcements.
- Wear the wingsuit early. Once unlocked, it turns traversal into a joy.
Controls Worth Knowing
Check Options for your exact bindings, but these are the actions you will use constantly:
Action | What it does
Crouch and slide | Crouch while sprinting to slide into cover
Takedown | Silent melee kill when close behind (or above) an enemy
Camera | Tags enemies, alarms, and animals so they stay visible through walls
Heal | Uses a syringe; with no syringes, Jason patches himself up slowly
Throwables | Rocks distract guards; grenades, mines, and Molotovs for loud work
Journal and crafting | Shows crafting recipes, skills, and collectible progress
Core Systems
Skill Trees (Tatau)
Jason's tribal tattoo grows each time you learn a skill. There are three trees:
Tree | Focus | Key picks
The Heron | Long-range and mobility | Sprint boosts, steadier aim, bow mastery
The Shark | Assault and healing | Extra health bars, faster healing, grenade and rifle upgrades
The Spider | Stealth and takedowns | Chain takedowns, knife and silenced weapon upgrades
Many advanced skills only unlock after key story missions. Invest in takedown chains and extra health early.
Crafting and Hunting
Hunting animals gives skins for crafting upgrades that expand what you can carry:
Item | What it upgrades
Weapon Holster | Weapon slots (up to four)
Rucksack | Loot inventory size
Wallet | Cash capacity
Ammo Pouch | Rifle/handgun ammo capacity
Munitions Pouch | Heavy weapon ammo
Syringe Kit | Number of syringes carried
Explosives and Throwables bags | Grenades, mines, C4, Molotovs
Each tier needs specific skins from particular animals. Open the crafting menu to see requirements; the map marks animal zones. Rarer skins come from dangerous predators and the "Path of the Hunter" missions.
Hunting tips:
- Use the bow or a silenced rifle: loud gunfire scatters the rest of the herd before you can finish the hunt.
- Predators like tigers, bears, and Komodo dragons can kill you fast; attack from a vehicle or high ground.
- Sharks attack in water; stay off the water or have a boat.
Syringes
Harvesting plants lets you craft syringes:
- Medicine: healing, the one you'll use most.
- Hunter: shows animals.
- Fireproof, Deep Diver, and combat boosts.
Keep plenty of Green Leaf for Medicine.
Radio Towers and Outposts
- The islands have 18 radio towers. Each tower removes the map fog and unlocks free weapons in shops.
- There are 34 enemy outposts. Liberating them gives XP, a fast-travel point, and new side quests.
- Undetected bonus: clearing without raising the alarm gives much more XP.
- Alarm panels: shoot or disable them to prevent reinforcements.
Weapons
- Buy weapons at shops after unlocking them with towers.
- Signature weapons (pre-modded variants) unlock from progress milestones, then appear in shops:
Signature weapon | Unlock condition
Shadow | Liberate 17 outposts
Bushman | Activate all 18 radio towers
Shredder | Collect 10 Memory Cards
Bull | Collect 10 Relics
AMR | Collect 20 Relics
Ripper | Complete 6 Trials of the Rakyat
Tanto (knife) | Find 6 Letters of the Lost
- Attachments like silencers, extended mags, and scopes are key. Silencers + sniper rifles are the stealth king.
- The bow (you start with the Recurve Bow and can buy better ones later) is silent and deadly.
Side Activities
- Path of the Hunter: hunt rare animals with specific weapons.
- Supply Drops: timed runs to deliver medicine.
- Wanted Dead: assassination targets that need knife kills.
- Trials of the Rakyat: combat challenges with scores.
- Card games (poker) and races.
First Five Hours: A Solid Route
- Finish the opening missions until the map opens up around Amanaki. Don't wander too far before you have a second weapon slot.
- Hunt boars and goats nearby for the first holster and rucksack tiers. They're low-risk and plentiful near the starting area.
- Climb the nearest radio tower. Free weapons appear in shops immediately; grab a silenced weapon or the bow as soon as possible.
- Liberate the closest outposts. Scout with the camera, silence alarms, then work inward with takedowns. Each outpost unlocks a fast-travel point and nearby side content.
- Buy a sniper rifle with a silencer once you can afford it. It lets you thin outposts from outside alarm range.
- Pick up Shark tree health upgrades before the harder story missions; extra health bars make firefights far more forgiving.
- Keep syringes stocked. Every time you pass Green Leaf, pick it.
Difficulty Settings
Difficulty | Who it's for
Easy | Story-focused players; generous aim assist and damage
Medium | The intended first playthrough
Hard | Veterans; enemies are deadlier and you have less margin for sloppy outpost assaults
Difficulty can be changed from the pause menu, so drop it for a frustrating mission rather than quitting.
Story Walkthrough Outline (No Big Spoilers)
- Escape from Vaas: Jason and his brother flee; Jason reaches the Rakyat in Amanaki village and meets Dennis.
- Rescue friends: Missions on the North Island rescue Liza, Daisy, Oliver, and Keith, and introduce Dr. Earnhardt and Willis Huntley.
- Vaas's reign: A string of missions escalating the conflict with Vaas on the North Island, ending in a confrontation with him.
- South Island: Hoyt Volker controls the south; you infiltrate his organisation.
- Final choice: At the end, you choose between saving your friends and joining Citra. Each gives a different ending.
Tip: Side quests and outposts don't lock out; you can finish them after the campaign.
Collectibles
Collectible | Count | Notes
Relics | 120 | Milestones unlock signature weapons (Bull, AMR) and recipes
Letters of the Lost | 20 | Tell side stories; 6 unlock the Tanto knife
Memory Cards | 20 | Found around outposts; 10 unlock the Shredder
Shops sell maps that reveal collectible locations; buy them once you have spare cash.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring the Weapon Holster. You'll be stuck with too few weapons.
- Going loud at every outpost. Stealth gives more XP and triggers fewer reinforcements.
- Swimming carelessly. Sharks and crocodiles are real threats.
- Leaving skill points unspent. Unlocking skills early gives big boosts.
- Hoarding junk loot. Sell trinkets for cash.
- Driving everywhere on the roads. Patrols and ambushes cluster on roads; fast travel to liberated outposts or use boats and the hang glider.
Advanced Tips
- Takedown chains: With Spider skills, chain knife takedowns across multiple enemies. Throw the knife from the takedown for silent ranged kills.
- Animal outposts: Release caged tigers or bears to clear outposts without firing a shot.
- Sniper + silencer: Clear outposts from long range.
- Distract, then strike: Throw a rock to pull a guard away from the group, then take him down out of sight. Rocks are free and infinite.
- Hunter Syringe: Use it before hunting rare animals to track them.
- Money: Loot bodies and sell animal skins you don't need.
PC Tips and Fixes
- Ubisoft Connect is required, even when bought on Steam.
- DirectX 11 mode generally runs better on modern systems than DX9.
- Stuttering: Cap frame rate and disable V-Sync if you get microstutter; update GPU drivers.
- Field of view: Adjustable in the options menu.
- Achievements: Unlocks from Ubisoft Connect sync to Steam after launching once through Steam.
