A practical guide to surviving (and eventually thriving) in Klei's single-player Don't Starve: first-day priorities, seasons and bosses, bases, food, sanity, the DLCs, and Adventure Mode.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the Major Quality of Life and Bug Fix Update (April 27, 2023), the last big patch. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Don't Starve (single-player) is finished and no longer gets content. Klei's active game is Don't Starve Together, a separate purchase with co-op and ongoing updates. Everything below is about single-player Don't Starve and its three DLCs: Reign of Giants (RoG), Shipwrecked (SW) and Hamlet (HAM).
Quick Start
- Never stop moving on day one. Pick up grass, twigs, flint, berries and carrots as you walk. Your first goal is a Science Machine and a full map edge, not a base.
- Darkness kills. Standing in complete darkness at night gets you attacked by Charlie, and the damage adds up fast. Always carry enough for a Torch or Campfire before dusk.
- Build a Science Machine early (1 Gold Nugget, 4 Logs, 4 Rocks). Gold comes from gold-veined boulders, graveyards and the Pig King.
- Find the Pig King. Trade him meat and some trinkets for gold. He's also a sign you've found a pig village, which you can use as free defenders.
- Winter comes fast. With RoG enabled, the default world starts in Autumn. Get a Thermal Stone, a warm hat and a food stockpile before Winter.
- Hounds attack on a timer. You'll hear growling before a wave. Fight them near pigs, Tallbirds, Beefalo or traps. Don't fight them alone in the open.
- Watch all three meters. Health, Hunger and Sanity. Low sanity spawns shadow creatures that can actually hurt you.
- Cook everything. Raw food restores less and some of it hurts. A Crock Pot turns filler into meals like Meatballs.
- Use the map (Tab). The map shows biomes you've seen. Savanna means Beefalo and rabbits, forest means trees and spiders, rocky land means gold and Tallbirds.
- Death is permanent unless you have a revive item: a Touch Stone, Meat Effigy or Life Giving Amulet. Build a Meat Effigy once you can spare the health.
The Three Meters
Meter | Wilson default | What drains it | How to restore
Health | 150 | Monsters, freezing, overheating, starving, darkness | Cooked food, Healing Salve, Honey Poultice, sleeping in a Tent
Hunger | 150 | Always drains; faster for some characters | Food. Cooked and Crock Pot meals are the most efficient
Sanity | 200 | Night, dusk, monsters nearby, eating raw or monster food, rain | Picking flowers, Garland, Tam o' Shanter, cooked Crock Pot meals, Tent/Siesta Lean-to, some foods
Sanity thresholds matter. As sanity drops, the screen distorts and harmless shadows start moving. At very low sanity, Crawling Horrors and Terrorbeaks start attacking you. The upside: killing them drops Nightmare Fuel, which you need for magic items. Some experienced players farm low sanity on purpose. Beginners should keep sanity high.
Characters
Characters unlock with experience earned when you die or finish Adventure Mode. Some are special unlocks.
Character | Playstyle | Notes
Wilson | Balanced default | Grows a beard that keeps him warm; can shave it to make a Meat Effigy
Willow | Fire starter | Starts with a Lighter; immune to fire damage; lights fires at low sanity
Wolfgang | Brawler | Stronger and bigger when full, weaker when hungry; hunger drains faster
Wendy | Ghost sister | Summons Abigail with Abigail's Flower. Great against spiders and hounds
WX-78 | Robot | Eats Gears to raise max stats. Rain hurts him; lightning overcharges him
Wickerbottom | Librarian | Starts with more crafting unlocked; can write books; suffers insomnia
Woodie | Lumberjack | Lucy the Axe; turns into a Werebeaver if he stops chopping
Wes | Hard mode | Mime with lower stats; for veterans
Maxwell | Summoner | Unlocked by finishing Adventure Mode. Starts with the Codex Umbra and summons shadow minions
Wigfrid, Webber | RoG characters | Wigfrid is a meat-only warrior with her own spear and helm; Webber is friends with spiders
Wagstaff | Inventor | Free for everyone with the base game since Hamlet left Early Access (May 2019)
Shipwrecked and Hamlet add their own characters (for example Walani, Warly, Wilbur, Woodlegs in SW, and Wilba, Wormwood, Wheeler in HAM). Some only unlock inside their DLC worlds.
Beginner pick: Wilson or Wendy. Wendy's Abigail makes spider dens and hound waves much more forgiving.
First Days: A Proven Opening
Day 1
- Grab everything on the ground: grass, twigs, flint, carrots, berries, seeds.
- Craft an Axe (1 Twig + 1 Flint) and a Pickaxe (2 Twigs + 2 Flint).
- Walk the edge of the world or roads to reveal the map. Look for gold, the Pig King, Beefalo herds and a good base spot.
- Before dusk, collect logs and build a Campfire in a spot you'll pass through again.
Days 2–4
- Build a Science Machine, then a Backpack, Spear, Log Suit, and Trap (catches rabbits).
- Transplant berry bushes and grass tufts with a Shovel near your base. They need fertilizer (Manure, Guano, Rot) to keep producing.
- Find a base location: near a pig village or Beefalo, with trees, rocks and ponds within reach.
Days 5–10
- Build an Alchemy Engine for better tools and structures. The magic stations (Prestihatitator, Shadow Manipulator) can wait.
- Set up a Crock Pot, some Drying Racks and an Ice Box (keeps food fresh much longer).
- Build a Bird Cage once you catch a bird. Feeding it meat gives eggs, and feeding it a vegetable gives you seeds for that vegetable.
- Make a Thermal Stone and a Winter Hat or Beefalo Hat before Winter starts.
Seasons and Seasonal Bosses
Without RoG the world only has Summer and Winter. With Reign of Giants there are four seasons, each with its own hazards and giant.
Season | Hazards | Seasonal giant | Prep
Autumn | Mild; best time to stockpile | Bearger (late Autumn) | Farm, dry meat, build your base
Winter | Freezing; fewer crops; darkness | Deerclops | Thermal Stone, warm clothing, fire, Ice Box food
Spring | Constant rain lowers sanity and makes you wet; frogs; lightning | Moose/Goose (at nests) | Umbrella or Eyebrella, Lightning Rod
Summer | Overheating; wildfires | Dragonfly (spawns in Summer and wanders, setting fires; neutral until attacked or approached) | Ice Flingomatic, Endothermic Fire, Thermal Stone cooled in an Ice Box, Straw Hat or Umbrella
Deerclops tip: Deerclops wrecks structures. Lead it away from your base, fight with Log Suit and Football Helmet, and dodge after each swipe. Its Deerclops Eyeball makes the Eyebrella, the best rain and heat protection in the game.
Wetness (RoG): Being wet drains sanity and makes you freeze faster. Wet tools can slip out of your hands. Umbrellas and Rain Coats help.
Wildfires (RoG Summer): Buildings and dry plants can catch fire by themselves. Use Ice Flingomatics to protect your base.
Food: What Actually Keeps You Alive
Source | Why it's good
Carrots, berries | Found on day 1. Berries restore little
Rabbits (traps) | Cheap, reliable meat
Beefalo | Large meat drops and Beefalo Wool; fight carefully, the herd defends itself
Farms (Basic/Improved Farm) | Seeds turn into vegetables. Birds may eat them
Drying Rack | Turns meat into Jerky, which lasts a long time
Crock Pot | Turns low-value items into strong meals
Bee Boxes | Honey never spoils and is used in many recipes
Crock Pot basics: Put in four ingredients. The recipe depends on what's in the pot.
- Meatballs: 1 meat item plus three cheap fillers (berries, ice, vegetables). The easiest efficient meal.
- Pierogi: meat, an egg and a vegetable. Restores a lot of health.
- Taffy: honey and sweeteners. Good for sanity; comes from Bee Boxes.
- Monster Lasagna: the result of too much Monster Meat. Avoid it; it hurts health and sanity.
- Wet Goop: the failure result. Nearly useless.
Food spoils: fresh, then stale, then rotten. Rot is still useful as fertilizer.
Base Building
Where to build: Near a pig village (free fighters against hounds), a Beefalo herd, trees, boulders and a pond. Avoid building right next to spider dens.
Core structures, roughly in order:
- Campfire, then Fire Pit (permanent)
- Science Machine, then Alchemy Engine
- Crock Pots (several), Drying Racks, Ice Box
- Chests and fenced storage
- Farms, Bee Boxes, Bird Cage
- Lightning Rod (Spring), Ice Flingomatic (RoG Summer)
- Walls: Hay, Wood, Stone, Thulecite. Stone Walls are a good middle ground
Protecting against hounds: A ring of Tooth Traps at the path into your base helps, and so do Pig Houses and Spider Dens you've "adopted" with Webber. Fire Hounds (Summer) and Ice Hounds (Winter) appear later. Don't fight Fire Hounds near flammable buildings.
Tech Progression
Tier | Station | Key unlocks
1 | Science Machine | Backpack, Spear, Log Suit, Trap, Fire Pit, Crock Pot, Basic Farm, Bird Trap and most early survival gear
2 | Alchemy Engine | Higher-tier tools and structures such as the Thermal Stone, Improved Farm, Walking Cane and (RoG) Ice Flingomatic
Magic 1 | Prestihatitator | Meat Effigy, Night Light, Pan Flute, Nightmare Fuel
Magic 2 | Shadow Manipulator | Night Armor, Dark Sword, Telelocator Staff, higher-tier amulets and staffs
Ancient | Ancient Pseudoscience Station (Ruins) | Thulecite gear, Magiluminescence, the Houndius Shootius and more
Prototyping: You only need to stand next to a station to build a recipe the first time. After that you know it forever in that world. Once you've built something at a station, you can build it anywhere.
Caves and Ruins
Plugged sinkholes lead to the Caves. Mine them open with a pickaxe.
- Caves are dark all the time. Bring light: Miner Hat, Torches, Lantern.
- Light Bulbs and Light Flowers are safe light sources.
- Slurtles, Bunnymen, Depths Worms and Cave Spiders live here. Bunnymen become a defense force if you build Rabbit Hutches and don't carry meat.
- The Ruins (deeper caves) have Clockwork enemies, Thulecite, the Ancient Pseudoscience Station and the Ancient Guardian. Since the April 2023 update, killing the Guardian drops a Seed of Ruin (all versions). Worlds where the Guardian was already dead get one spawned somewhere in the Ruins.
- Nightmare cycle: The Ruins go through calm, warning, nightmare and dawn phases. Nightmare Lights and dangerous shadow creatures are much more active during the nightmare phase.
Adventure Mode
Find Maxwell's Door in Sandbox mode to enter Adventure Mode. It's a series of worlds where you collect the four parts of the Teleportato (Box, Crank, Ring, Potato) to move on. You bring only four items into each world, so choose carefully (a Backpack, a weapon, armor and a Thermal Stone are common picks).
World | Where it can appear | What makes it hard
A Cold Reception | Chapters 1–3 | Rapid season changes, lots of rain/snow, little daylight
King of Winter | Chapters 1–3 | Endless Winter and extreme cold
The Game is Afoot | Chapters 1–3 | Rich central island ringed by dangerous, blockaded bridges
Archipelago | Chapters 1–3 | Islands linked by Wormholes; scarce food, sanity pressure
Two Worlds | Chapter 3 or 4 | Two connected lands with very different conditions
Darkness | Always Chapter 5 | Permanent night, little food, constant sanity drain
Checkmate (Epilogue) | Always last | Final meeting with Maxwell
Why do it? Beating it unlocks Maxwell as a playable character and reveals the main story. There are five chapters drawn from the six worlds above, so one early world is skipped each run.
DLC Overview
DLC | Setting | What's different
Reign of Giants | The standard world, expanded | Autumn and Spring, wetness, overheating, new biomes (Deciduous Forest, Desert), Bearger, Moose/Goose, Dragonfly, Wigfrid and Webber
Shipwrecked | Tropical islands | Boats, Mild/Hurricane/Monsoon/Dry seasons, poison, the Volcano, new characters
Hamlet | A jungle plateau with a pig city | Shops and money (Oincs), interiors, hay fever, Aporkalypse, Ancient Hulk, Wagstaff and Wheeler
The 2023 QoL update changed world jumping so it no longer regenerates the sub-worlds of other maps (SW, HAM). It also fixed a lot of long-standing bugs, allowed up to 10 save slots, added an integrated backpack layout, and let you use items stored in nearby containers when crafting.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Building a base on day 2. Explore first. A bad base spot costs you far more time than it saves.
- Leaving fires near your buildings. In RoG, fires spread to grass, trees and structures. Put Fire Pits away from chests.
- Fighting Beefalo in mating season. When their rumps are red they attack anyone who comes close.
- Hitting a Pig with a spear by accident. The whole village turns on you. Force-attack (Ctrl) only what you mean to.
- Eating Monster Meat raw. You lose health and sanity. Cook it, dry it, or feed it to pigs, Bird Cages or the Pig King.
- Ignoring sanity until it's too late. By the time Terrorbeaks show up you'll struggle to recover without a Tent or Crock Pot meal.
- Going into caves without light. One missed torch is all it takes to die in the dark.
- Forgetting that revives are consumed. A Touch Stone works once per stone. Meat Effigies cost max health while standing.
Advanced Tips
- Pig and Bunnyman farming: Pigs that eat four pieces of Monster Meat (or at a full moon) turn into Werepigs. Kill them for Pig Skin. Pig Skin and Manure feed your whole midgame.
- Tallbird eggs: Drop one on the ground and keep it warm (near a fire in cold weather) until it hatches into a Smallbird that grows into a pet Tallbird. Don't put it in the fire; that just cooks it.
- Walking Cane: Made from a Walrus Tusk (MacTusk camps in Winter). It speeds up movement a lot, and exploring is most of the game.
- Ham Bat / Tentacle Spike: Ham Bat hits hard but weakens as it spoils. Tentacle Spikes drop from Tentacles in the Marsh; lure Hounds into Tentacles to do the fighting for you.
- Kiting: Most enemies have a fixed attack pattern. Hit two or three times, step away as they wind up, then go back in. It works on Spiders, Hounds, Treeguards and even Deerclops.
- Night Light and Nightmare Fuel: Low sanity lets you farm shadow creatures for fuel. Wear a Night Armor only if you can keep up with the sanity drain.
- Lazy strategies for Winter: A packed Ice Box, a Winter Hat and a Thermal Stone let you ignore most of Winter.
- Useful mods (Steam Workshop): Geometric Placement (a building grid), a combined status display showing temperature and exact numbers, and minimap mods. The game shows a warning screen when mods are enabled (since 2023 you can tick "don't show this again").
FAQ
Is Don't Starve still updated? Only for bug fixes, and rarely. The last big patch was the Quality of Life update on April 27, 2023. New content goes to Don't Starve Together.
Should I buy Don't Starve or Don't Starve Together? DST if you want co-op or a constantly updated game. Single-player Don't Starve has Adventure Mode, Shipwrecked and Hamlet, which DST doesn't have in the same form, and it pauses when you want it to.
How do I unlock characters? Most unlock with experience from each death or game end. Maxwell needs Adventure Mode. Wagstaff is free. Some DLC characters are found inside their DLC worlds.
How do I survive my first Winter? Stockpile food in an Ice Box, craft a Thermal Stone (warm it at the fire), wear a Winter Hat or Beefalo Hat, keep the fire going and stay near your base. Kite Deerclops away from your structures.
What's the fastest way to get gold? Mine gold-veined boulders, dig graves (costs sanity), and give meat to the Pig King. Each piece of meat gets you gold.
Can I turn DLCs on and off? Yes. When creating a new world you choose which DLC content to enable. SW and HAM worlds can also link together.
What was that noise in the dark? If you're standing in total darkness, that's Charlie about to attack. Light a Torch or Campfire immediately; a few hits will kill you.
