What Destiny 2 looks like now that active development has ended: what's in the game, how Power, gear tiers and Armor 3.0 work, what to do as a new or returning Guardian, and how the endgame loop fits together.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Season: Lawless (Year 8) with the Monument of Triumph update (June 9, 2026), the final content update. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Where Destiny 2 Stands in September 2026

  • Renegades (December 2, 2025) is the 10th and final expansion. It's a Star Wars–inspired expansion and it kicked off Season: Lawless.
  • Monument of Triumph (June 9, 2026) is the last content update. It replaced the planned "Shadow & Order" mid-season update.
  • On May 21, 2026, Bungie announced Monument of Triumph would be the final content update. The previously planned expansions ("Shattered Cycle" and "The Alchemist") were cancelled. Servers stay up.
  • On June 9, 2026, all expansions, content packs and dungeon keys were bundled into Destiny 2: The Collection — the simplest way to buy everything now.
  • On September 21, 2026, Bungie announced plans to un-vault previously removed campaigns, destinations and raids and make them available to all players again. Bungie said the restoration work (lighting, encounters and other renovations) will take time; no firm date was given at the time of writing.

Bottom line: the game is stable and "complete" for now. Current activities, loot and meta won't shift much unless Bungie releases the un-vaulting content.

Quick Start

  • Base Destiny 2 is free-to-play. Expansions (The Edge of Fate, Renegades, and older ones) are paid; since June 2026 they're all bundled in Destiny 2: The Collection. You can play much of the Portal, Crucible, strikes and the free content without buying anything.
  • Pick a class based on how you like to play. Hunter (mobility, dodge), Titan (tanky, barricades), Warlock (healing rifts, grenades). All can use every weapon.
  • Renegades raised the Power cap (widely reported as 550; confirm in-game). New characters start low and climb. A catch-up boost has been available from Ikora for new players; check in the Tower if you're at low Power.
  • Use the Portal. Since The Edge of Fate, the Portal is the main hub for matchmade activities (Solo Ops, Fireteam Ops, Pinnacle Ops, Crucible Ops).
  • Chase gear tiers. Weapons and armor drop in Tiers 1–5. Tier 5 is the best, with the highest stats and extra perk options. Higher difficulty and better grades raise your odds.
  • Learn Armor 3.0 stats. The six stats are now Weapons, Health, Class, Grenade, Super and Melee, and can go up to 200.
  • Get the Praxic Blade. Renegades' lightsaber-style Exotic sword comes from the Fire and Ice Exotic mission on Europa.
  • Try Lawless Frontier. It's Renegades' main open-world activity and a fun way to level.
  • Don't overthink subclass choice early. Prismatic lets you mix Light and Darkness abilities and is a strong default once unlocked.

Classes and Subclasses

Class | Strengths | Class ability

Hunter | Mobility, invisibility, precision | Dodge

Titan | Durability, melee, crowd control | Barricade

Warlock | Healing, grenades, support | Rift

Subclasses: Solar, Arc, Void (Light); Stasis, Strand (Darkness); and Prismatic, which combines abilities from both. Each subclass has Aspects (major traits) and Fragments (small modifiers).

Power and Progression

  • Power is your gear level. Renegades' ceiling is widely reported as 550 (check the in-game Power screen).
  • Solo players usually climb fastest by running Fireteam Ops quickplay in the mid range, then Solo Ops at A grade or better closer to the top.
  • Artifact levels (from the seasonal artifact) add bonus Power and unlock seasonal perks. They keep increasing as you earn XP.
  • Activity grades (letter grades shown before you launch a Portal activity) depend on your chosen difficulty and modifiers. Higher grades mean better loot and higher Power drops.

Gear Tiers and Armor 3.0

Introduced in The Edge of Fate (July 2025) and still in place:

  • Tiers 1–5 apply to both weapons and armor. Tier 5 armor has 75 total stats split 30/25/20 across three stats.
  • Armor pieces roll three of the six stats, based on their archetype. Two stats are fixed by archetype; the third is random.
  • Stats can go up to 200. Going past 100 adds bonus effects for that stat.
  • Set bonuses: wearing two or four pieces of the same set grants extra effects.

Stat (new name) | Replaces | What it boosts

Weapons | Mobility | Weapon handling, reload, damage against non-bosses

Health | Resilience | Health regen on orb pickup, shield strength

Class | Recovery | Class ability cooldown, overshields

Grenade | Discipline | Grenade cooldown and damage

Super | Intellect | Super energy gain and damage

Melee | Strength | Melee cooldown and damage

Armor archetypes (each favors two stats): Gunner (Weapons + Grenade), Brawler (Melee + Health), Specialist (Class + Weapons), Grenadier (Grenade + Super), Paragon (Super + Melee), Bulwark (Health + Class). Build around the two stats your subclass cares about most, then fill the rest.

Renegades Content

  • Lawless Frontier covers Mars, Venus and Europa. Instead of standard patrols, you run bounties: bounty hunts, smuggles and sabotages. You must exfiltrate to collect rewards and build reputation with the Cabal, Fallen and Vex syndicates. Reputation unlocks abilities like airstrikes and armored walkers. An Invasion mode lets one Guardian disrupt another fireteam's run.
  • Tharsis Outpost on Mars is the expansion's social hub.
  • Fire and Ice (Europa) is the Exotic mission that rewards the Praxic Blade. It has four catalysts: three from the mission, and the fourth (Energy Conduit) from the Equilibrium dungeon. You can change its color and slot in mods. Heavy attack throws the blade, and blocking deflects projectiles toward your crosshair.
  • Equilibrium is the Renegades dungeon (Venus), opened December 13, 2025.
  • New Exotic armor includes the Deimosuffusion (Warlock helmet), Fortune's Favor (Hunter legs) and Praxic Vestment (Titan chest).

Monument of Triumph (Final Update)

  • Pantheon returned as an endgame boss-rush challenge featuring remixed raid bosses.
  • Previously removed raids were restored.
  • Distortions, a new public event.
  • Sparrow Racing League is back.
  • Refreshed weapon loot pools and Exotic armor updates.
  • Other reported additions (the classic Director returning alongside the Portal, and an Exotic mission called Oblation rewarding the Cull's Shadow fusion rifle) could not be confirmed against official notes at review time — check Bungie's Monument of Triumph patch notes.

The Endgame Loop

  • Hit the Power cap with Portal activities and Lawless Frontier.
  • Farm Tier 5 gear from Pinnacle Ops, dungeons and raids at high difficulty.
  • Build around Armor 3.0 stats and set bonuses.
  • Run Pantheon for the hardest boss content and exclusive rewards.
  • Chase Exotic catalysts, including all four Praxic Blade catalysts (Echoing Blade, Upper Hand, Hyperblade from Fire and Ice on Legendary; Energy Conduit from Equilibrium).
  • Crucible Ops and Trials-style PvP for the competitive crowd.

Currencies

Exact costs and sources shifted with The Edge of Fate's economy changes; check your vendors in-game.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring gear tiers. Tier 5 gear is a big stat jump. Don't sink resources into Tier 1–3 armor.
  • Only running easy difficulty. Grades matter for loot quality and Power.
  • Spreading armor stats evenly. Focus two main stats instead.
  • Skipping Exotic missions. Fire and Ice (Praxic Blade) and other Exotic missions give some of the best weapons.
  • Deleting old gear too quickly. Some older items still have strong perk combos.
  • Assuming vaulted content is gone forever. Bungie announced plans to restore it; keep an eye on news.

Advanced Tips

  • Match your artifact perks to your weapons. The seasonal artifact changes how certain weapon types perform.
  • Use set bonuses to fill build gaps instead of chasing single perfect rolls.
  • Push stats past 100 for your main ability stat to unlock extra effects.
  • Use the Praxic Blade's block to deflect projectiles back at bosses and minor enemies.
  • Solo Ops at A grade is one of the most efficient solo Power climbs near the cap.
  • Pantheon rewards are the endgame chase once you're done with the rest.
