A guide to Dead Cells, the roguevania: what to spend Cells on first, how the three scroll stats shape a build, the runes that open the map, the biome routes and bosses, the Boss Stem Cell difficulty ladder, and how to finally beat 5BC.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final content update "The End is Near" plus the June 15, 2026 Steam stability patch. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status: Dead Cells is content-complete. The final content update ("The End is Near") was made by Evil Empire, which developed most of Dead Cells' post-launch content; Motion Twin has since moved on to Windblown, and Evil Empire went on to make Castlevania: Belmont's Curse (due October 15, 2026). A stability patch on June 15, 2026 fixed the most common startup crash, a Custom Mode crash tied to Dracula's boss cell, Wolf Trap and inventory-mid-attack crashes, and missing Asian font glyphs. The four paid DLCs are The Bad Seed, Fatal Falls, The Queen and the Sea and Return to Castlevania. They add biomes, bosses and gear, but none are required.

Quick Start

  • Spend Cells on Health Flask upgrades first. The Collector at the end of each biome sells them, and extra flask charges are the biggest early survival boost.
  • Cells only count if you reach the Collector. Die mid-biome and you lose everything you're carrying. Blueprints work the same way: they drop from enemies, but you only keep them if you survive to the next Passage.
  • Pick one scroll color and commit. Your weapons and skills scale with Brutality (red), Tactics (purple) or Survival (green). Mixing colors makes you weak everywhere.
  • Parry and roll are your best defense. Rolling passes through enemies and gives brief invulnerability. Shields can parry most melee attacks and many projectiles.
  • Kill elites. They drop guaranteed loot and are often guarding a rune.
  • Unlock the Vine Rune early. It opens the route to the Toxic Sewers and more of the Promenade, and many later routes need it.
  • Use Custom Mode once you have the Customization Rune. It lets you remove items you hate from the loot pool.
  • Don't be afraid of Assist Mode. Dead Cells has accessibility and assist options (such as more health and slowing time) if you want to see the story.
  • Buy the Recycling and Forge upgrades. Weapons get more stats and better modifiers once the Forge has been upgraded.

How a Run Works

  • Start in the Prisoners' Quarters with a starting weapon, a shield or bow, and nothing else.
  • Fight through biomes. Each ends at a Passage (with a health fountain at base difficulty) where you spend Cells at the Collector.
  • Gold buys items from shops during the run. You keep a portion of it after death (it gets capped as you progress).
  • Scrolls of Power let you raise one color stat, and each one also adds some health. Some scrolls offer a choice of colors, while others are locked to one.
  • Mutations (three slots) are passives you pick at each Passage. Early favorites:
  • Necromancy heals on kill.
  • Combo gives bonus damage after chained kills.
  • Vengeance boosts damage after you take hits.
  • Survival builds love What Doesn't Kill Me, which lets you recover some of the damage you took.
  • Cursed chests give strong loot but curse you: while cursed, any single hit (including traps and falls) kills you. Each kill removes one curse point, and the curse lifts when the counter reaches zero.

Scroll Colors and Build Archetypes

Color | Stat | Weapon and skill style | Beginner picks

Brutality (red) | Melee damage, speed-focused | Swords, daggers, whips, crits on combos | Balanced Blade, Spite Sword, Sadist's Stiletto

Tactics (purple) | Ranged and skill damage | Bows, turrets, traps, grenades | Heavy Crossbow, Double Crossb-o-matic, Sinew Slicer

Survival (green) | Health and heavy melee | Big weapons, shields, heavy hits | Spiked Shield, Broadsword, Shovel

Dual-color gear scales with whichever of its two colors you've invested in more, which makes hybrid builds viable. Read the colored bars on each item.

Build rules of thumb:

  • One main weapon plus one secondary or skill that enables crits on your main (a freeze, root, bleed or poison applier, depending on what the main weapon wants).
  • Two skills that stun, freeze or deal damage-over-time.
  • Survival scrolls add a lot of health. Brutality and Tactics add less. That's why pure Brutality and Tactics runs rely on dodging and ranged play.

Runes (Permanent Unlocks)

From the Dead Cells wiki:

Rune | Where | Guardian | Unlocks

Vine Rune | Promenade of the Condemned | Undead Archer | Vine climbing; opens the Toxic Sewers path and is needed to progress

Teleportation Rune | Toxic Sewers | Slasher | Using teleport monoliths

Ram Rune | Ossuary | Slasher | Smashing through certain floors; opens the Ancient Sewers route

Spider Rune | Slumbering Sanctuary | Caster | Wall clinging, which opens more routes

Challenger's Rune | Black Bridge | The Concierge | Daily Run mode

Customization Rune | Ramparts | Rune guardian | Custom Mode

Explorer's Rune | Forgotten Sepulcher | Two Dark Trackers | Reveals the full biome map once you've explored most of it

Homunculus Rune | Throne Room | Hand of the King | Detach your head to grab items and enemies at range; also needed for the Cavern

Richter Mode (Return to Castlevania) adds two more runes, Dash and High Jump, found on pedestals.

Order to aim for: Vine, then Teleportation and Ram, then Spider. These open the branching routes to the Ossuary, Ancient Sewers, Stilt Village, Slumbering Sanctuary and more.

Biome Map and Bosses

Stage | Biomes | Boss

1 | Prisoners' Quarters | none

2 | Promenade of the Condemned, Toxic Sewers, Prison Depths, Corrupted Prison, Dilapidated Arboretum (TBS), Castle's Outskirts (RtC) | none

3 | Ramparts, Ancient Sewers, Ossuary, Morass of the Banished (TBS); then the boss arena | Black Bridge: The Concierge; Insufferable Crypt: Conjunctivius; Nest (TBS): Mama Tick; Defiled Necropolis (RtC): Death

4 | Stilt Village, Slumbering Sanctuary, Graveyard, Fractured Shrines (FF) | none

5 | Clock Tower, Forgotten Sepulcher, Cavern, Undying Shores (FF) | Clock Room: The Time Keeper; Guardian's Haven: The Giant; Mausoleum (FF): The Scarecrow

6 | High Peak Castle, Derelict Distillery, Infested Shipwreck (TQatS), Dracula's Castle (RtC) | Throne Room: The Hand of the King; Lighthouse then The Crown (TQatS): The Servants, then The Queen; Master's Keep (RtC): Dracula (with a final form)

7 (5BC only) | Astrolab | Observatory: The Collector

TBS = The Bad Seed, FF = Fatal Falls, TQatS = The Queen and the Sea, RtC = Return to Castlevania.

Some routes open only at higher Boss Stem Cell (BC) levels: 1BC opens the Prison Depths door to the Ancient Sewers and the Corrupted Prison door to the Ramparts, 2BC opens the Cavern (from the Slumbering Sanctuary) and Guardian's Haven (from the Forgotten Sepulcher), and 3BC opens the Ramparts door to the Insufferable Crypt.

Boss Stem Cells (Difficulty Ladder)

From the Dead Cells wiki:

BC | Name | Main change | Obtained by

0 | Base | Health fountain at every Passage | Starting difficulty

1 | Hard | Fountains only at every other Passage (the others refill one flask charge) | Beating Hand of the King, the Queen or Dracula's final form at 0BC

2 | Very Hard | No fountains, but each Passage refills one flask charge. Double Cell drops | Beating a final boss at 1BC

3 | Expert | Only 3 flask refills total. Scroll Fragments appear. Item levels +1 | Beating a final boss at 2BC

4 | Nightmare | No flask refills. Enemies detect you from farther away and can teleport. Item levels +3 | Beating a final boss at 3BC

5 | Hell | Everything in 4BC, plus Malaise (a pressure meter that makes enemies stronger the longer you dawdle) | Beating The Giant at 4BC

At 5BC, a seventh stage opens at the end of the Throne Room: the Astrolab and Observatory, ending with the fight against the Collector (a Collector's Intern takes over his shop at this level). Higher BC levels also multiply Cell drops (x2 at 2BC, x3 at 4BC and 5BC).

Boss Tips

  • The Concierge: stay close and dodge through his charge. His shockwave telegraphs clearly, so roll through it.
  • Conjunctivius: kill the tentacles/chains when they appear, and keep ranged damage on the eye.
  • The Time Keeper: fast and teleport-heavy. Parrying her needles and melee is key.
  • The Giant: attack the hands and the eye when exposed. Its fist slams have long windups.
  • Hand of the King: learn his lance charges and leaping slams. His second phase is more aggressive, so save a flask charge and keep your distance-closing and escape tools ready.
  • The Collector (5BC): a long fight. Bring a flask-independent sustain option (Necromancy or Vampirism-style effects) and practice at lower BC with Boss Rush.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Hoarding Cells instead of spending them. Unspent Cells vanish when you die.
  • Mixing stat colors instead of stacking one.
  • Ignoring legendary and colorless items that scale with your top two stats.
  • Rushing timed doors without a plan. Speed matters, but dying before the Collector costs more than the door's reward.
  • Taking too many cursed chests at once. Curse points stack, so you stay one-hit-from-death for much longer.
  • Skipping rune elites because they look scary. Runes are permanent progress.

Advanced Tips

  • Crit enablers are everything. Many weapons crit against frozen, rooted, stunned, bleeding, poisoned or burning enemies. Read the tooltip and pair each one with a skill or secondary that applies that status.
  • Affixes matter. Rerolling at the Forge (once unlocked) can turn a mediocre weapon into a run-winner.
  • Aspects (added in the late updates) are alternative passive modifiers that change your run. Try them once you can clear 3BC.
  • Custom Mode lets you practice routes, bosses and builds without unlocking pressure.
  • Scroll Fragments at 3BC and up combine into full scrolls. Grab every one.
  • Survival builds are the most forgiving way to break into 4BC and 5BC. Tactics turret builds are the safest for bosses.

FAQ

What should I buy first with Cells? Health Flask upgrades, then the Recycling Tube and Forge upgrades, then gear you like.

How do I get Boss Stem Cells? Beat a final boss (Hand of the King, the Queen or Dracula's final form) at your current BC level. The fifth one requires beating the Giant at 4BC.

Are the DLCs worth it? Yes, if you enjoy the game. They add new routes and bosses and make runs more varied. Return to Castlevania is the most story-heavy.

Is Dead Cells still being updated? No new content. The June 2026 patch was a stability-only fix.

Is there co-op? No. Dead Cells is single-player.

How do I unlock the teleport monoliths? Get the Teleportation Rune from the elite Slasher in the Toxic Sewers.
