A survival guide to Dark Deception's arcade horror mazes: how shards, powers, and the Ring Altar work, how to handle each kind of monster, how to chase S ranks and achievements, and where the series stands (Chapters 1 to 4 out, Chapter 5 still in development).

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Enhanced update and Chapter 4 (September 28, 2021) plus the November 2021 performance patch. Chapter 5 is listed on Steam but not yet released. Check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Chapter 1 is free. The base game on Steam is free to play. Chapters 2, 3, and 4 are paid DLC, and the Dark Deception Complete Bundle packages the paid chapters at a discount.
  • You cannot kill monsters. Enemies can be stunned and avoided, but not killed. Every level is about outrunning, outsmarting, and outlasting.
  • Collect every shard, then escape. Each maze is filled with shards. Grab them all, then reach the exit before you are caught.
  • Grab the bonus shard. Special pickups help you out; the red bonus shard reveals enemies (in the 2018 Chapter 1 update it was set to reveal them for a minute).
  • Spend XP at the Ring Altar. Clearing levels earns XP that unlocks and upgrades powers. You can refund your skill points to try other builds.
  • Learn each monster's rules. Every nightmare has a unique creature with its own AI. The trick to surviving is working out what triggers it and what slows it.
  • Use the tablet map. The in-level map (with zoom) shows the maze layout; check it often instead of wandering.
  • Pick a difficulty you enjoy. There is an Easy Mode, and patches have tuned difficulty levels up and down several times.
  • Do not hide. There are no lockers. Keep moving.

How a Level Works

Every nightmare (level) follows the same basic loop:

Step | What you do

Enter the maze | Monsters spawn and begin hunting you

Collect shards | Pick up the shards scattered through the corridors

Survive escalation | As you collect more, the level often gets more dangerous (new enemies, faster enemies, new hazards)

Escape | After the last shard, reach the exit to finish

Some levels are split into zones, with different rules or monsters in each. Chapter 4's nightmares, for example, have zone-specific achievements such as not triggering any cameras in Zone 1.

Traps and Hazards

Mazes are full of traps and environmental dangers alongside the monsters. Several achievements reward finishing levels without dying to traps, so learn which floor tiles, cameras, and objects are dangerous before you try for a clean run.

Powers and the Ring Altar

Between levels you visit the Ring Altar to spend XP on powers. The system is inspired by BioShock-style active abilities, and the Ring Altar was overhauled to make every upgrade's effect clearer. Key points:

  • Powers are active abilities with cooldowns or limited durations. The game shows visual feedback for how long a power is active.
  • Teleport is one of the key mobility powers. Patches locked down spots where players used it to escape the map, so use it for normal shortcuts and escapes.
  • Upgrade the powers you actually use. Spreading XP thin leaves you with weak versions of everything.
  • Respec is free. The Ring Altar lets you get all your skill points back, so experiment.

Quality-of-life options added in patches include a quick 180-degree turn (middle mouse click on PC), toggle sprint (instead of holding Shift), and map zoom (M). The map also has a detector that points to remaining shards and objectives. Both are worth turning on: a fast turn lets you check behind you without stopping.

Monsters and How to Handle Them

Each monster has its own behavior. General rules:

  • Stun, do not stand. When a stun option is available, use it to break line of sight and run, not to hold ground.
  • Track them on the map with any enemy-revealing pickup or power.
  • Learn their triggers. Some react to noise or being seen, some patrol, some ambush.
  • Loop them. Long corridors and circular routes let you lead a monster away and double back for shards.

Named monsters from across the chapters (all confirmed by official posts and achievements):

Monster | Where you meet it | Notes

Murder Monkeys | Chapter 1 | Fast groups; the series' mascots. Learn corridors so you never corner yourself

Agatha | Chapter 2 (the school nightmare) | The school got a big buff in the January 2019 1.4 update after players found Agatha too easy; the Enhanced update added a boss fight with her

Gold Watchers | Chapter 2 | The chapter's second nightmare threat

Dread Duckies | Chapter 3 | Duck enemies; pure speed and numbers

GremClowns | Chapter 3 (the carnival, Crazy Carnevil) | Watch for clusters around turns

Malak | Recurring | His Phantom Form was buffed globally in patch 1.6.0

The Matron | Chapter 4 (Torment Therapy) | A boss you can defeat and also sneak past undetected for an achievement

Joy Joy Gang | Chapter 4 (Mascot Mayhem) | A trio of mascots; one achievement is getting killed by all three

Joy Kill | Chapter 4 | A boss you can defeat

Mama Bear | Chapter 4 (Bearly Buried) | A boss; separate achievements for beating her and for never dying to her in the mazes

Other level names that appear in official patch notes include Deadly Decadence, which had its Easy Mode difficulty lowered in an update.

S Ranks

Each level is graded, and S ranks are the top grade. Several achievements require S ranks in Chapter 4 levels (Unruly Patient for Torment Therapy, The Luckiest for Mascot Mayhem, and Problem Child for Bearly Buried).

How to push toward S ranks:

  • Learn the layout first on a normal run. Know where shard clusters are.
  • Plan a route that collects shards in loops rather than zig-zags.
  • Spend XP on mobility and escape powers before attempting speed runs.
  • Avoid deaths. Every death costs time and momentum on a run where pace matters.
  • Use pickups aggressively on S rank attempts; saving them is less valuable than keeping pace.

Community S rank guides exist for individual levels such as the school level and Crazy Carnevil; see the Steam guides hub.

Achievement Tips (Chapter 4 Examples)

Achievement | Requirement | Tip

The Bigger They Are | Defeat the Matron | Learn her attack cycle before committing

Stealthy Survivor | Sneak by the Matron undetected | Move slowly and watch her facing

Blood Donor | Give blood in the Needle Room | An optional interaction; look around carefully

Terminated | Defeat Joy Kill | Save escape powers for the final phase

A Joyful End | Get killed by all 3 members of the Joy Joy Gang | Easiest on a throwaway run

Going Vegan | Avoid Penny's eggs in all zones | Plan routes around the egg hazards

Rule Breaker | Defeat Mama Bear | Learn her pattern in the mazes first

No Bear Hugs | No deaths from Mama Bear in the mazes | Keep distance and use the map

Bearly Noticeable | Get the first ring piece without dying | Slow and careful early

Evasive Maneuvers / Smarter Than Your Average Bear | Do not get killed by any traps | Memorize trap positions

Camera Shy | Do not trigger any cameras in Zone 1 | Watch camera sweeps and time your movement

Earlier chapters also have achievements for secrets and collectibles (Shard Enthusiast, Eagle Eyes, Watching the Watchers, and more). A dedicated all-achievements guide is on the Steam guides hub.

Settings and Performance

  • The November 2021 patch cut GPU usage significantly (the developers cited roughly 10% to 45% lower usage), so older PCs run the Enhanced version better than at launch.
  • Turn on toggle sprint if holding sprint is uncomfortable during long chases.
  • The game supports multiple languages added in patch 1.6.0 (German, Russian, Chinese, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Italian, Japanese, Korean).

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Collecting shards in random order. Plan a loop, or you will backtrack into monsters.
  • Stopping to look behind you. Use the quick-turn option instead.
  • Hoarding powers. A power used early often saves more time than one saved for an emergency.
  • Spreading XP across every power. Max a few.
  • Trying to hide. There is no hiding mechanic.
  • Ignoring traps. Many runs end to hazards, not monsters.
  • Playing S rank runs blind. Learn the level first.

Advanced Tips

  • Bait and loop: lead a monster down one corridor, cut through a parallel one, and grab the shards it was guarding.
  • Use enemy-reveal pickups at the start of the late phase when monsters get faster.
  • Respec per level. A build for Chapter 4's boss fights is different from one for shard collection.
  • Watch for zone changes. New zones often bring new rules; slow down for the first few seconds.
  • Learn camera cycles in Chapter 4 for stealth achievements.
