How to get the most out of Condition Zero today: the Tour of Duty bot campaign, the separate Deleted Scenes campaign, bot settings, multiplayer, and fixes for modern PCs.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the December 1, 2023 update (Half-Life 25th Anniversary engine update, no changes since). Check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • It's two games in one purchase. On Steam, Condition Zero includes Counter-Strike: Condition Zero (Tour of Duty + multiplayer) and Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes, a separate story campaign that shows up as its own library entry.
  • Tour of Duty is classic CS against bots. Real CS rules: rounds, no respawn until the round ends, buy menu, money for wins and kills.
  • Deleted Scenes is a linear single-player shooter with 12 story missions and special gadgets. It plays nothing like normal CS.
  • The CZ bots are the main attraction. They were praised at launch and are still good practice for CS fundamentals.
  • Multiplayer is standard Counter-Strike 1.6-style play with CZ's updated models and maps; servers are much quieter than CS 1.6.
  • Economy matters. Buy full armor and a rifle when you can, save (buy nothing or a pistol) when you can't.
  • The 2023 engine update modernized things. CZ and Deleted Scenes got the Half-Life 25th Anniversary engine updates on November 29, 2023, including AMD lighting fixes, a "Use shaders" option in video settings, and Steam Networking fixes; a December 1 follow-up fixed pushable-entity physics and video-settings crashes.
  • Start Tour of Duty on Easy or Normal. Higher difficulties have much faster, more accurate bots.

Tour of Duty

Tour of Duty is a series of map-based missions played against bots.

How it works

  • You pick a difficulty (Easy, Normal, Hard, Expert).
  • Each tour contains a group of maps. You must win the match on a map to progress, and each map also has tasks to complete (for example, kill a number of enemies with a certain weapon, or win a round in a certain way).
  • Winning maps unlocks further tours; clearing a difficulty's full set completes the Tour of Duty on that difficulty.
  • Reputation: you earn reputation points by winning. Spend them to recruit better bot teammates. Better bots (higher skill ratings, better aim and tactics) cost more.

Tips

  • Read the tasks before the match. Some require a specific weapon; buy it even if it's not your favorite.
  • Finish the tasks, not just the match. A map counts as cleared only when you win the match and complete its tasks; watch each task's wording, since some specify conditions like "in one round".
  • Spend reputation on a couple of strong teammates rather than many weak ones.
  • Let bots take fights first. Follow your teammates and trade their kills, especially on Hard and Expert.
  • Use the radio. Bots respond to "Follow me", "Hold this position", and "Go go go" commands.

Economy and Buying

The buy menu opens with B during freeze time and in buy zones.

Situation | What to buy

Pistol round | Kevlar or a better pistol; grenades if you can afford them

Won the pistol round | SMG (MP5/UMP) or rifle if affordable, plus Kevlar

Lost and low on cash | Save: pistol or nothing; build money for a full buy next round

Full buy | M4A1 or AK-47 (by side), Kevlar + Helmet, grenades, defuse kit (CT)

AWP round | AWP, armor, pistol backup; only if you can afford it and still have armor

Money comes from winning rounds, kills, and objectives (plant, defuse, hostage rescue). Losing streaks give increasing loss bonuses.

Weapons Worth Learning

Weapon | Side | Why

AK-47 | T | One-tap headshot potential, cheap

M4A1 | CT | Accurate, silencer optional

AWP | Both | One-shot sniper; high cost

Desert Eagle | Both | Strong pistol for eco rounds

MP5 Navy | Both | Cheap, good close-range SMG

Famas / Galil | CT / T | Budget rifles for semi-eco rounds

HE Grenade / Flashbang / Smoke | Both | Utility wins rounds; always buy some

Deleted Scenes also has extra equipment not found in multiplayer (see below).

Bots and Practice

CZ's bots are also available in regular (non-Tour of Duty) games you host.

Host a game from the main menu and use the bot settings there, or open the console (enable it in Options > Keyboard > Advanced, then press the tilde key):

Command | What it does

bot_add / bot_add_ct / bot_add_t | Add a bot (to either team, CT, or T)

bot_quota [number] | Keep the server filled to that many bots

bot_kick / bot_kill | Remove all bots / kill all bots (useful to restart a drill)

bot_difficulty 0–3 | Easy, Normal, Hard, Expert (applies to bots added afterwards)

bot_knives_only / bot_pistols_only / bot_snipers_only | Restrict bots to that weapon class for focused practice

bot_all_weapons | Lift the weapon restriction again

bot_stop 1 | Freeze bots in place for aim drills (set back to 0 to resume)

bot_chatter | Controls bot radio chatter (e.g. bot_chatter off)

bot_join_after_player 1 | Bots wait for a human to join before starting

Weapon classes can also be toggled individually with the bot_allow_* variables (for example bot_allow_snipers 0). These are standard CS/CZ bot commands; use them on your own local server.

Deleted Scenes

Condition Zero: Deleted Scenes is the story campaign originally made by Ritual Entertainment.

  • 12 missions with a storyline and set objectives.
  • Special equipment: digital camera, walkie-talkie, blowtorch, remote-controlled bombs and a fiber-optic camera, among others.
  • Linear, scripted levels closer to a Half-Life-style shooter than CS.

Tips:

  • Save often. Quick-save before every fight and objective.
  • Use the fiber-optic camera before opening doors.
  • Stealth pays. Many missions are easier if you avoid alerting enemies.
  • Watch for scripted objectives: some require specific tools to proceed.
  • A Deleted Scenes beta fix (September 2013) resolved a loading failure on the second level of the Alamo mission; if you hit a similar issue, verify files.

Multiplayer in 2026

  • Server browser: CZ servers exist but are much fewer than CS 1.6's. Sort by players, and try Favorites for regular communities.
  • Friends: host a listen server via Create Server and invite friends through Steam.
  • Anti-cheat: VAC is active on secure servers.
  • Map names mostly match CS 1.6 classics (Dust2, Inferno, Nuke, Train, Aztec and others), with CZ-updated textures and models.

Modern PC Setup

  • Resolution: the November 2023 update brought over the Half-Life 25th Anniversary engine fixes (including Steam Networking and UI layout fixes); set your native resolution in video settings.
  • Mods or old configs misbehaving? Valve's recommended fallback for GoldSrc compatibility problems after the 2023 engine update is the steam_legacy beta branch (Properties > Betas).
  • Shaders: the November 2023 update added a shaders checkbox in video options; turn it off if you see visual problems.
  • FPS: fps_max controls the frame cap; many players use values around 100 or a bit above to keep physics consistent.
  • Mouse: turn on raw input (m_rawinput 1) if available in your build; disable Windows mouse acceleration.
  • Crashes after changing video settings in multiplayer were fixed in the December 1, 2023 update.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying every round. Poor economy ruins matches; save when you can't full-buy.
  • Running while shooting. CS accuracy drops heavily while moving; stop before firing.
  • Ignoring tasks in Tour of Duty. Winning a map without its tasks doesn't finish it.
  • Playing Deleted Scenes like CS. It's a single-player shooter; save and use gadgets.
  • Wasting reputation on mediocre teammates.

Advanced Tips

  • Crosshair placement: keep your crosshair at head height in doorways and corners.
  • Burst fire: shoot 2–4 bullets at range, then reset.
  • Use smokes to cross sightlines and flashes before entering sites.
  • Learn bot behavior: bots react to sound, so walk (Shift) when sneaking.
  • Take map control early on CT to deny T rushes.

FAQ

What's the difference between Condition Zero and Deleted Scenes? Condition Zero is CS with bots and multiplayer; Deleted Scenes is a separate story campaign with 12 missions and gadgets.

Is Condition Zero still worth playing? Yes for offline CS practice with bots and for nostalgia; multiplayer populations are small.

Did Condition Zero get the Half-Life 25th Anniversary update? Yes, in November 2023, with a follow-up fix on December 1, 2023.

How do I add bots in a custom game? Host a game and use bot_add (or the host menu bot options).

Does it run on Linux and macOS? Linux and macOS versions have been available since 2013 (Deleted Scenes gained them in its September 2013 SteamPipe update, along with Steam Cloud saves). Note that current macOS versions can no longer run 32-bit apps, so check the store page for your Mac.

Why won't bots obey my commands online? Bot commands only work on a server you control (a local/listen server or one where you have rcon). On public servers the admin sets the bot rules.

Can I play CS 1.6 maps in CZ? Many classic maps come with CZ versions; custom servers can run others.
