How to beat The Dealer, survive Double or Nothing and outplay friends in multiplayer: shell counting, every item and when to use it, the best combos, and the mistakes that get most players shot.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the Steam version with 4-player multiplayer (added October 31, 2024) and the Xbox/Game Pass release (July 8, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

What the Game Is

Buckshot Roulette (Mike Klubnika, published by CRITICAL REFLEX) is Russian roulette with a 12-gauge shotgun. It started on itch.io on December 28, 2023, launched on Steam on April 4, 2024, added online multiplayer in an October 31, 2024 update, and came to Xbox (including Game Pass and Xbox on PC) on July 8, 2026. A single-player run against The Dealer takes about 15 to 20 minutes.

Quick Start

  • Every load starts by showing you the shells. The Dealer reveals how many are live (red) and how many are blank (grey) before shuffling them in. Remember that count; it's the whole game.
  • You choose who to shoot: yourself or your opponent. A live shell deals damage. A blank shot at yourself gives you another turn; a blank at your opponent passes the turn.
  • Health is shown as charges on the defibrillator display. Rounds get longer and give you more charges as you go.
  • Items start in round 2. Each new load hands both sides a few items (2 per load in round 2, 4 per load in round 3), and you can hold up to 8.
  • Count every shell that leaves the gun. Fired and ejected shells tell you what's left. Live remaining divided by total remaining is your chance the next one is live.
  • More lives than blanks left? Shoot The Dealer. More blanks than lives left? Shoot yourself for the extra turn. Exactly even? Shooting The Dealer is usually safer.
  • Use information items before damage items. Magnifying Glass, Beer and Burner Phone first; then Handsaw or Handcuffs once you know what's coming.
  • The final round is sudden death. In round 3, once your charges run low the defibrillator is cut; healing stops working and the next live shell ends your run.
  • The Dealer plays fair. He uses items and plays the odds the same as you. No hidden information.

The Rules in Detail

  • A game against The Dealer is three rounds. Each round is made up of several loads (the shotgun is emptied, then reloaded with a new random mix).
  • Shooting yourself with a blank: you keep the turn. This is the only way to "bank" extra actions without items.
  • Shooting yourself with a live shell: you lose a charge (two with the Handsaw) and the turn passes.
  • Shooting The Dealer: live shell damages him and passes the turn; blank just passes the turn.
  • You can use as many items as you want on your turn before shooting.
  • When all shells are spent, the gun is reloaded and new items are dealt (from round 2).
  • Win by bringing The Dealer's charges to zero in each round. If he wins, you're sent back to try again from the start.

Round structure at a glance

Round | Items | What changes | Your focus

1 | None | Fewest charges, short loads | Pure counting; take no needless 50/50 self-shots

2 | 2 per load | More charges, longer loads | Learn item timing; don't sit on a full inventory

3 | 4 per load | Most charges; defibrillator is cut at low health (sudden death) | Heal early, deny The Dealer, spend saws only on confirmed lives

Exact charge counts can vary between versions, so read the display at the start of each round rather than assuming.

Reading The Dealer

The Dealer uses the same items you do, and his choices give information away:

  • He shoots himself: he likely believes the shell is blank (or knows it, if he just used a Magnifying Glass). If it was blank, update your count and expect him to go again.
  • He uses a Magnifying Glass, then Handsaw: the shell is live. Brace or be ready with healing on your next turn.
  • He uses Beer: the ejected shell is revealed to everyone; count it.
  • He cuffs you: he wants two shots in a row, usually because the odds favor live shells.

Treat every action by the table, his or yours, as new information for the count.

Every Item and When to Use It

Single-player items

Item | Effect | Best use

Magnifying Glass | See whether the current shell is live or blank | Always first when the odds are close

Beer | Rack the shotgun, ejecting the current shell (and revealing it) | Skip a shell you think is live, or dig to a better one

Cigarette Pack | Restore 1 charge (up to your max) | Use when damaged; useless once the final-round defib is cut

Handsaw | Your next shot deals double damage | Only after you know the shell is live

Handcuffs | Opponent skips their next turn | Lets you take two shots in a row; can't be chained back to back

Burner Phone | A voice tells you what a random future shell in the chamber order is | Plan several shots ahead

Inverter | Swaps the current shell: live becomes blank, blank becomes live | Turn a known blank into a live hit, or a known live into a safe self-shot

Adrenaline | Steal one of The Dealer's items and use it immediately | Take his Handsaw or Magnifying Glass at the right moment (you can't steal Adrenaline)

Expired Medicine | A gamble: may restore 2 charges, or may cost you 1 | Only when you can survive the downside

Burner Phone, Inverter, Adrenaline and Expired Medicine were added for the Steam release; the original itch.io version had only the first five.

Multiplayer-only items

Item | Effect

Jammer | Makes a chosen player skip their next turn (the multiplayer answer to handcuffs)

Remote | Reverses the turn order around the table

Shell Counting: The Core Skill

Every decision comes down to one fraction: live shells remaining ÷ total shells remaining.

Worked example: the load is 3 live, 2 blank.

  • You shoot The Dealer and it's live. Now 2 live, 2 blank remain: 50%.
  • The Dealer shoots himself with a blank and keeps his turn. Now 2 live, 1 blank remain: 67% live. Expect him to shoot you next.

Rules of thumb:

  • Above 50% live: shoot the opponent.
  • Below 50% live: shoot yourself for a free extra turn.
  • Exactly 50%: shoot the opponent unless you have a reason not to. A self-shot here risks a charge for only a modest reward.
  • Last shell of a load: it's certain. If you've counted correctly, you know exactly what it is.
  • When you know it's blank, shoot yourself to keep the turn and set up items.

Best Combos

Combo | How it works

Glass + Handsaw | Confirm live, then saw for 2 damage

Glass + Inverter + Handsaw | Confirm blank, invert it to live, saw it for 2 damage

Handcuffs + Handsaw | Guaranteed extra shot; saw the one you're surest about

Beer + Beer | Dig through a load to reach a known-safe or known-live shell

Burner Phone + counting | Know one future shell, count the rest, plan two or three turns ahead

Glass (live) + Inverter | Known live shell becomes a blank; shoot yourself to keep the turn

Adrenaline + Dealer's Handsaw | Steal his damage boost before he can use it

Handcuffs + self-shot on blank | Keep the turn with the blank, then act again while he's cuffed

Round-by-Round Plan

Round 1 (no items): Pure counting. Play the percentages and don't take unnecessary 50/50 self-shots.

Round 2 (items begin): Don't hoard. You can only hold 8 items, and new ones arrive every load. Spend information items freely and save Handsaw and Handcuffs for a confirmed live shell.

Round 3 (sudden death): Items matter most here. Healing becomes useless once the defibrillator is cut, so use Cigarettes and Expired Medicine before you drop to that point. Prioritize denying The Dealer: take his Handsaw with Adrenaline, cuff him before a load he could exploit, and never let him have two shots at you with a saw.

Double or Nothing

  • After you beat The Dealer, you can take the pills option to enter Double or Nothing, an endless mode.
  • The standard run pays out a cash prize based on your performance. In Double or Nothing, each time you win you choose to cash out or play another three rounds to double your winnings; losing ends the run. Leaderboards track the biggest totals.
  • Know when to walk away. If your last run was shaky or you are chasing a leaderboard spot only, cash out; one bad load loses everything.
  • The same counting and item rules apply, but the pressure is higher and runs get long. Keep a steady routine: count, gather information, act.

Multiplayer Tips

  • Tables seat up to 4 players, and everyone takes turns in order.
  • Remote reverses direction, which can skip the player about to shoot you or bring the turn back to you sooner.
  • Jammer is best used on whoever you think knows the next shell (for example, the player who just used a Magnifying Glass).
  • Watch who uses information items. If someone looks through the glass and then shoots themselves, you've just learned something about the next shell too.
  • Alliances form and break quickly; the last player standing wins.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Forgetting the count. Say it out loud if you have to: "two live, one blank."
  • Sawing blind. A saw on a blank is wasted; confirm first.
  • Self-shots at 50/50 or worse. You're gambling a charge for one extra action.
  • Healing too late in round 3. Once the defib is cut, Cigarettes do nothing.
  • Hoarding past 8 items. Excess items can't be picked up, so use what you have.
  • Ignoring The Dealer's items. If he has a Handsaw and the next shell is likely live, cuff him or burn the shell with Beer.
  • Using Beer on a shell you already know is blank on your turn. Shoot yourself instead and keep the turn.

Advanced Tips

  • Information stacking: Burner Phone plus careful counting often tells you the last two or three shells exactly.
  • Invert for tempo: A known blank you would have shot yourself with can become a live hit on The Dealer; decide which gives more value based on his health.
  • Deny, don't just attack. Stealing his saw with Adrenaline or cuffing him before a live-heavy load is worth as much as dealing damage.
  • Play the end of loads aggressively. When few shells remain your information is best; that's when to spend saws and cuffs.
  • Keep one Cigarette for emergencies in round 2, but spend them before the final-round cut.
