Everything you need to go from your first bullymong to farming legendaries in Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode. It covers the six Vault Hunters, how playthroughs and slag work, gear, farming spots, and DLC order.
Researched September 2026, current as of the final PC build with the Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary content (level cap 80, Overpower 10). The game gets no more balance patches, but SHiFT codes still rotate. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Pick any class for your first run. Every Vault Hunter can finish the game. Axton and Gaige are the most forgiving for beginners.
- Do side quests in Normal Mode. They give XP, cash, and unique rewards, and they keep you from falling behind the enemy level curve.
- Upgrade backpack and ammo SDUs with Eridium at Crazy Earl's in Sanctuary once they unlock. Backpack space and ammo come first.
- Redeem SHiFT codes for Golden Keys. Link a SHiFT account, then use the keys on the Golden Chest in Sanctuary for purple-rarity gear at your level.
- Elements matter: Incendiary is strong against flesh, Corrosive against armor, and Shock against shields. Explosive is a middle option. Slag makes the target take extra damage from everything else.
- Your shield and relic/class mod matter as much as your gun. Class mods add skill points.
- Second Wind: when you go down, kill an enemy during Fight For Your Life to get back up.
- Don't sell legendaries (orange). Stash them in Sanctuary or on a mule character. You'll want them in later playthroughs.
- Badass Rank (from challenges) gives small permanent stat bonuses to every character on your profile. It adds up.
- Co-op is up to 4 players. Enemy health scales with player count, and so does loot.
The Vault Hunters
Character | Action Skill | Playstyle | Beginner-friendly?
Axton (Commando) | Sabre Turret | Guns and a turret that draws fire. Great survivability | Yes
Maya (Siren) | Phaselock | Crowd control, healing, element spreading | Yes
Salvador (Gunzerker) | Gunzerking (dual-wield) | Huge sustained damage and regen | Yes
Zer0 (Assassin) | Decepti0n | Critical hits, sniping, or melee burst | Medium
Gaige (Mechromancer, DLC) | Deathtrap robot | Anarchy stacks and a pet that tanks and kills | Very (Best Friends Forever tree)
Krieg (Psycho, DLC) | Buzz Axe Rampage | Melee, fire, self-damage synergies | Harder
Tree highlights:
- Axton: Guerrilla (turret damage), Gunpowder (explosive/weapon damage), Survival (shields and regen).
- Maya: Motion (Phaselock control), Harmony (healing, e.g. Res and Sweet Release), Cataclysm (elemental, e.g. Ruin and Reaper).
- Salvador: Gun Lust (reload and crits), Rampage (magazine and Gunzerk uptime), Brawn (tankiness and regen, e.g. Incite).
- Zer0: Sniping, Cunning, Bloodshed (melee "Many Must Fall" builds).

Playthroughs and Level Cap
Mode | Unlock | Notes
Normal | Start | Learn the story. Do side quests
True Vault Hunter Mode (TVHM) | Beat the story | Tougher enemies, better loot odds. Quests reset
Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode (UVHM) | Beat TVHM and reach the required character level (needs the UVHM Upgrade Pack DLC) | Enemies regenerate health. Slag deals triple damage. Loot scales to you
Overpower levels (OP1–OP10) | Beat the Digistruct Peak challenge | Raises enemy and gear level beyond the cap
- The level cap is 80 with the Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary DLC and the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Packs.
- Overpower goes up to OP10 once you've unlocked it through Digistruct Peak (Pack 2).
Why slag matters in UVHM
In Normal and TVHM, slagged enemies take roughly double damage. In UVHM this goes up to triple. Enemies also regenerate health in UVHM, so a mix of slag plus your main element is what separates a working build from a stuck one. Common slag sources:
- Maya's Ruin
- Gaige's Deathtrap with Make It Sparkle (Deathtrap takes on the element of the gun Gaige is holding, so this only slags if you're holding a slag weapon)
- A dedicated slag weapon (any slag-element Maliwan, the Grog Nozzle, the Slagga)
- Slag grenades, or a teammate who slags for the group
Gear Basics
Rarity
White (common), Green (uncommon), Blue (rare), Purple (very rare), E-tech (magenta), Orange (legendary), Pearlescent (cyan), and Seraph (pink, bought with Seraph Crystals from raid bosses in the DLCs). The Commander Lilith DLC adds Effervescent (rainbow) gear.
Manufacturers at a glance
Manufacturer | Trait
Jakobs | High damage, semi-auto, bonus crit damage, never elemental (with a few legendary exceptions)
Maliwan | Always elemental, high elemental chance
Torgue | Explosive gyrojet rounds. Torgue Tokens (Campaign of Carnage) buy gear
Hyperion | Accuracy improves as you fire
Vladof | High fire rate, big magazines
Tediore | Throw it to reload, and the gun explodes
Bandit | Huge magazines
Dahl | Burst fire when aiming down sights
Shields, grenades, relics, class mods
- Shields: Adaptive (elemental resistance), Nova/Spike (damage on break/contact), Turtle (big capacity, lower max health), Roid (melee damage while depleted). The Bee turns your shield into bonus damage per shot.
- Class mods add points to specific skills and often decide a build (for example the Legendary class mods from the endgame).
- Relics: situational stat sticks. Pick the one that fits your element or weapon type.
Notable Legendaries and Where to Farm
Drop sources as listed in the Lootlemon database. Many legendaries also drop from the world pool at low odds.
Item | Type | Source
Conference Call | Hyperion shotgun | The Warrior (Vault of the Warrior) or the Handsome Sorcerer
Flakker | Torgue shotgun | The Warrior, Handsome Sorcerer, Torgue vending machines
Bitch | Hyperion SMG | BNK-3R (The Bunker), Master Gee (Hayter's Folly raid)
Infinity | Vladof pistol (never needs ammo) | Doc Mercy (Three Horns Valley), Lt. Angvar (The Burrows), or Chubby Bones
Grog Nozzle | Maliwan pistol (slag plus lifesteal) | Quest "The Beard Makes the Man" (Mines of Avarice, Tiny Tina DLC)
Lady Fist | Hyperion pistol (huge crit bonus) | Quest "Uncle Teddy" (Arid Nexus - Badlands)
Hellfire | Maliwan SMG | Scorch or world drop
KerBlaster | Torgue assault rifle | Midge-Mong or Handsome Sorcerer
Hawk Eye | Jakobs sniper (Seraph) | Voracidous or Dexiduous the Invincible, or Omnd-Omnd-Ohk (Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt), or the Seraph vendor in Hunter's Grotto
Farming tips:
- Save-quit from the menu and reload to respawn bosses. Most farms rely on this.
- BNK-3R and The Warrior are the classic story farms, because they're close to fast-travel points.
- Bosses drop more loot with more players in the session, so farming in co-op is usually more efficient.
Recommended Order and DLC
- Main story (Normal) with most side quests.
- Captain Scarlett and Her Pirate's Booty (around level 15+). Sand pirates, the Leviathan as the story boss, Seraph gear, and two raid bosses (Hyperius and Master Gee).
- Mr. Torgue's Campaign of Carnage. Torgue Tokens, the Torgue vending machines.
- Sir Hammerlock's Big Game Hunt. Considered the weakest of the four, but it has loot.
- Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep. Widely seen as the best DLC. It has the Grog Nozzle and a great story.
- Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary. Bridges to Borderlands 3, raises the cap to 80, and adds Effervescent gear.
- The Headhunter packs (holiday mini-campaigns) are short, but a few bosses drop good loot.
Tip: You can do DLC at any level. It scales in TVHM and UVHM, so saving Dragon Keep for TVHM is fine.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring shields. A good shield keeps you alive more than a slightly better gun does.
- Going into UVHM without slag. Health regen makes non-slagged fights drag, especially bosses.
- Spending Eridium on the Slot Machine before your backpack and ammo SDUs are done.
- Selling unique (blue text) or red-text items. Most of them have special effects. Red text means a legendary or unique with flavor text.
- Skipping side quests in Normal. You'll fall behind the enemy level curve and end up grinding.
- Keeping Golden Keys for later. The Golden Chest gives purples at your level, so use keys at level milestones (for example when you start TVHM or UVHM).
Advanced Tips
- Transfusion grenades plus Grog Nozzle fix most healing problems in UVHM.
- Salvador dual-wielding a Grog Nozzle (slag plus healing) with a heavy-hitting gun is one of the most popular UVHM Gunzerker setups.
- Zer0's melee build (Execute + Many Must Fall, with a Roid shield such as the Love Thumper) is fast and strong, but it's glassy. Carry a lifesteal weapon like the Rubi for sustain.
- Anarchy Gaige gets ridiculous damage by stacking Anarchy at the cost of accuracy. Pair it with high-fire-rate guns.
- Krieg gets strong once Bloodlust or Hellborn clicks. Fire and self-damage synergies can make Krieg almost immortal.
- Mules: start a spare character and stash extra gear there to save Sanctuary bank space.
FAQ
What is the max level in Borderlands 2? 80, with Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary and the UVHM upgrade packs. On top of that you can raise enemy and gear levels with Overpower up to OP10.
Can I skip straight to endgame with a new character? Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary lets new characters boost to level 30, so you can jump in without replaying the early game.
How do I get Golden Keys? Redeem SHiFT codes (in-game menu or on the SHiFT website). Gearbox and the Borderlands social channels post codes regularly.
Which Vault Hunter is best for solo? Axton, Salvador, and Gaige are the easiest to solo with. Maya is great with the right slag setup. Krieg and Zer0 are more demanding.
Should I play Borderlands 2 before Borderlands 3 or 4? Yes if you care about story. Commander Lilith & the Fight for Sanctuary also leads directly into BL3.
Does Borderlands 2 support split-screen on PC? Not officially. On PC, co-op is online (up to four) or LAN.
How do I unlock UVHM? You need the Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack (included in the Game of the Year and Handsome Collection bundles), then beat TVHM and reach the level requirement.
