This guide covers how to survive Castle Brennenburg: the sanity and light systems, how each monster behaves, a spoiler-light route through the castle, the endings, Hard Mode, the Justine campaign and achievements.

Researched September 2026. Current as of the Steam build that includes the 2018 Hard Mode update and Steam Workshop support. It's a finished single-player game, so there are no live changes to track, but check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • You cannot fight anything. You have no weapon at any point. You survive by breaking line of sight, hiding in the dark, shutting doors behind you and staying still.
  • Do not stare at monsters. Looking at a monster drains sanity quickly and makes Daniel's vision wobble. Face a wall or a corner while you hide and just listen.
  • Darkness costs sanity, but light gets you seen. Stand in a lit area, or light a candle or torch with a tinderbox, to recover your footing. Turn the lantern off the moment you hear something coming.
  • Tinderboxes and lantern oil are finite. Early on, only light the sources that sit on your route. Don't try to light every candle in a room.
  • Progress restores sanity. Solving puzzles and reaching story beats gives sanity back, so pushing forward is often the best cure.
  • Laudanum heals you. Save it for real damage, not a scratch.
  • Doors are tools. Close them behind you to slow pursuers. Monsters can break doors, but that buys you seconds.
  • Read the notes and diary pages. The story is told through them, and they often contain puzzle hints. The Master Archivist achievement also needs every note.
  • Play with headphones and in the dark, but take breaks. The game is designed around dread, not jump-scare pacing.

Controls (PC defaults)

Keys can be rebound in Options, so confirm them there if something doesn't respond.

Action | Default input

Move | W A S D

Run | Shift

Crouch | Ctrl

Jump | Space

Lean | Q / E

Interact, grab, open | Left mouse (hold and move the mouse to drag or open doors)

Throw a held object | Hold the object, then use the throw input shown in Options (a mouse button by default)

Toggle lantern | F

Inventory | Tab (the journal is reachable from the inventory screen or its own hotkey)

Bindings above are the common defaults; the Options > Input screen is the authority for your build, so check it once before you start.

Physics interaction is the core of the game. Drawers, doors, valves and levers all open by holding the mouse button and moving the mouse in the direction you want them to go. Pull a door toward you by dragging the mouse back. Slam it shut by flicking the mouse fast.

Core Systems

Sanity

Sanity is the meter you manage more than health. It drops when you:

  • stand in darkness for a long time
  • look directly at a monster
  • witness disturbing scripted events

As sanity falls, the screen blurs, insects crawl across your vision, sounds distort, and Daniel eventually collapses to the floor. That collapse can give away your position. On Normal, sanity can't kill you directly. On Hard Mode, sanity reaching zero kills you.

You recover sanity by:

  • standing in light (candles, torches, sunlight)
  • solving puzzles and reaching story progress points

Light: lantern, tinderboxes and oil

Resource | What it does | Tip

Lantern | Portable light that burns oil | Toggle it off in dark corridors you already know, and whenever a monster is near

Lantern oil | Refills the lantern | Check drawers, cabinets and shelves. The containers look like small bottles

Tinderbox | Lights one candle, torch or lamp permanently | Use them to create "safe rooms" at puzzle areas where you'll spend time

A lit room is a sanity battery, but it also exposes you. When you hide, pick dark corners away from the lights you've created.

Health

Damage comes from monster hits, falls and some hazards. Laudanum restores health. Your status (health and sanity) is shown as a description in the inventory, not as a number, so check the inventory screen after taking hits.

Monsters and How to Handle Them

Monster | Where it shows up | How to survive

Gatherers: Grunt | Much of the castle, notably the lower levels and the prison | Break line of sight, close doors, hide in the dark and don't look at it. Grunts wander a patrol and give up if they lose you

Gatherers: Brute | Later areas | Hits harder and looks tougher. Same rules: hide, stay still, don't stare

Kaernk (water monster) | Flooded areas such as the Cistern | Invisible. You only see its splashes. Stay on crates, boxes and dry platforms. Throw objects into the water to lure it away, then move

The Shadow | A chasing force marked by fleshy growth on the walls | Keep moving and don't stop to explore when it's pursuing you. The growth itself hurts, so avoid touching it

General hiding rules:

  • Line of sight first. Get around a corner, then behind a closed door, then into darkness.
  • Crouch in dark corners, closets and behind furniture. Moving is louder than staying still.
  • Turn off the lantern before a monster rounds the corner.
  • Face away. If a monster stands in your field of view, your sanity drain will get you spotted.
  • Wait out the patrol. Most monsters despawn or leave once they lose you, and the danger music fades. On Hard Mode there's no danger music, so rely on footsteps.

Route Through the Castle (Spoiler-Light Outline)

Area names are the in-game map labels. Order is approximate where the game lets you pick a sequence.

  • Rainy Hall and the Archives. You wake with a note from yourself telling you to descend to the Inner Sanctum and kill Alexander. This is the tutorial stretch. Learn doors, drawers, the lantern and the inventory here. Collect every tinderbox and oil you find.
  • Back Hall and the broken elevator. The elevator is out and you need to restore it. This sends you to several side areas (the Refinery, Wine Cellar, Storage and Machine Room) to gather what's needed. This is the first real test of monster avoidance. Take it slowly and use the side rooms as hiding spots.
  • The Cistern. A flooded section with the Kaernk. Hop between floating and fixed objects, and toss loose items to distract it when you have to cross open water.
  • The Morgue, Nave, Choir and nearby areas. A darker, more hostile stretch with more patrols and bigger puzzles. Notes here fill in what Daniel did.
  • The Prison. A dense, hostile area with Grunts, cells and heavy story revelations about Daniel's past. Close every door you pass through.
  • The Inner Sanctum and Orb Chamber. The finale. Your choices here decide the ending.

Puzzle habits that save time

  • Check your inventory for combinations. Some solutions combine two items, and the journal notes what Daniel thinks he needs.
  • Read the memento list in the journal. It summarizes your current goals whenever you're lost.
  • Physics solutions are intended. Stacking boxes, wedging doors and knocking things over are all legitimate answers.

Endings

Your actions in the Orb Chamber decide the ending. There are three:

Ending | What happens

Alexander escapes | Alexander passes through his portal and Daniel is left to die

Portal destroyed | You knock down the portal's support columns. The Shadow kills Alexander and spares Daniel, who walks out of the castle

Agrippa's ending | Agrippa's head goes into the portal. The Shadow kills both Daniel and Alexander, and Agrippa assures Daniel he'll be all right

There's also a hidden fourth outcome: when you're captured and thrown in a prison cell, simply waiting there lets the Shadow reach Daniel, and Alexander thanks him.

The final area's layout makes it easy to create a save before the decision and reload to see the others.

Hard Mode

Frictional added Hard Mode in a free update at the end of September 2018. It changes the following:

  • Autosaves are disabled, and each manual save costs four tinderboxes.
  • Sanity dropping to zero kills you.
  • Oil and tinderboxes are reduced across the levels.
  • Monsters are faster, hit harder and search for you longer.
  • There's no danger music when monsters are near.

Tips for Hard Mode:

  • Treat tinderboxes as your save budget. Only save after a hard section, never "just in case."
  • Learn monster routes on Normal first. Knowledge replaces the resources you won't have.
  • Stay near light. With sanity now lethal, lingering in dark corridors is a real risk.
  • Hard Mode completion gives the Masochist achievement. Because saves eat tinderboxes and supplies are reduced, chase Illuminatus (every tinderbox) on a Normal run instead.

Amnesia: Justine

Justine is a short separate campaign included with the game. An unnamed woman wakes in a dungeon and works through three puzzle tests, each with captive victims whose fate depends on what you do, while being hunted by the Suitors (three disfigured former lovers). The twist is that dying ends the run: there are no second chances. How many captives you save matters. The Altruist, Egotist and Vacillator achievements tie into the choices you make with them. Go in expecting a short, replayable experience rather than a second full campaign.

Achievements

The Steam version has 18 achievements. The ones with public descriptions:

Achievement | Requirement

Illuminatus | Pick up every tinderbox in The Dark Descent

Master Archivist | Read all notes in all games

Insanity | Unlock all other achievements

Masochist | Complete Hard Mode

The rest (NOPE, Alchemist, Escape Artist, Descendant, Pipeworker, Restorer, Survivor, Benefactor, Sacrifice, Quitter, Altruist, Still Alive, Egotist, Vacillator) cover story progress, endings and the Justine choices.

Planning notes:

  • Do a Normal run for Illuminatus and Master Archivist. Search every drawer and cabinet in every room, and read every note as you find it.
  • Use a separate run for Hard Mode.
  • Keep a save before the Orb Chamber so you can see every ending.
  • Global unlock rates are low: most achievements sit under 25% and Masochist around 2%. Completionists should expect several playthroughs.

Custom Stories and Mods

  • Custom stories are fan-made campaigns. On Steam they're supported through the Steam Workshop. Frictional later enabled total-conversion support too.
  • Workshop items appear in the game's custom story menu after you subscribe.
  • Frictional runs community mod jams for its HPL engine games (the 2024 jam was an "Escape Room" edition, and the 2026 jam, "WHAT IS REALITY?", ran 27 May to 25 August 2026 and drew on the Dark World from Amnesia).
  • The game's source code was released under the GPL by Frictional in September 2020, which is why many community tools and ports exist.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Watching the monster to "see where it goes." This is the number one cause of getting caught, because the sanity drain gives you away. Turn around.
  • Burning tinderboxes on every candle in the first hour, then having none for the puzzle rooms later.
  • Running everywhere. Sprinting is loud and makes you miss items. Walk when you're safe.
  • Leaving doors open behind you. Closed doors slow pursuers and give you a sound cue when they break through.
  • Using laudanum at "slightly hurt." Supplies are limited, so save potions for when you're badly wounded.
  • Skipping notes. Many puzzle hints live in them, and you'll need them all for Master Archivist.
  • Fighting the physics. If a door won't open, you're probably pushing instead of pulling. Drag the mouse the other way.

Advanced Tips

  • Lure and loop. When a Grunt patrols a hub, let it see you briefly, break line of sight through a door, then circle back through another route while it searches.
  • Stack for escape. Boxes and barrels can be stacked to climb out of reach in some rooms, and in the Cistern they're your lifeline.
  • Throw objects as distractions. Any loose item thrown away from you draws the Kaernk, and pushing objects into the water helps too.
  • Light your puzzle rooms, not the corridors. You spend the most time in puzzle rooms, so that's where sanity regeneration pays off.
  • Listen for audio tells. Footsteps, growls and door bangs tell you direction. On Hard Mode, with no danger music, audio is all you have.
  • Use the journal memento list whenever you stall. It updates with what Daniel believes he should do next.

FAQ

Can you die from low sanity? Not on Normal: low sanity causes hallucinations, collapses and makes you easier to find. On Hard Mode, sanity reaching zero kills you.

Is there a way to fight monsters? No. There are no weapons. You can only evade, hide, slow them with doors and objects, and distract them.

How long is Amnesia: The Dark Descent? A typical first run is roughly 7 to 9 hours, depending on how thoroughly you explore. Justine is much shorter.

How do I get the Illuminatus achievement? Collect every tinderbox in The Dark Descent on a non-Hard run. Search every drawer and shelf, and read a checklist from a community guide if you're chasing it.

Which ending is canon? Frictional hasn't declared one canon in the game itself. The three endings are Alexander escapes, portal destroyed, and Agrippa's ending.

What's the difference between The Dark Descent and later Amnesia games? A Machine for Pigs (2013), Rebirth (2020) and The Bunker (2023) are separate games. The Bunker adds a weapon and a more systemic monster, while The Dark Descent is pure evasion.

Can I play custom stories on Steam? Yes. Subscribe through the Steam Workshop and they'll appear in the custom story menu.
