How to survive Sevastopol as Amanda Ripley: the Alien's behavior, tools and crafting, a spoiler-light campaign outline, collectibles, achievements, DLC and Survivor Mode, and the best difficulty to pick.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC build (no gameplay patches since the 2014-2015 DLC era). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Status check (September 2026): Alien: Isolation is a finished, single-player game from Creative Assembly and SEGA (released 6 October 2014). There is nothing to "keep up with" patch-wise. On the 10th anniversary (7 October 2024) Creative Assembly confirmed a sequel was in development, and Wikipedia reports it was formally revealed as Alien: Isolation 2 at Summer Game Fest in June 2026. None of that changes the original.
Quick Start
- You cannot kill the Alien. Every tool you get only delays, distracts, or scares it. Plan around avoiding it, never beating it.
- Play on Hard if you want the game as designed. The Alien's aggression on Hard is what the game was balanced around; Normal and Easy make it noticeably more forgiving. Nightmare is a later addition for veterans.
- Save often, but save smart. There is no autosave between save stations (manual terminals). Saving takes a few seconds during which you are exposed, so check the tracker and listen before you swipe your card.
- The motion tracker makes noise. Holding it up is audible to nearby enemies, it only sees things that move, and it cannot tell you whether a blip is on your floor or in the ducts above you.
- Walk, don't run. Running is loud. Crouch-walking is the default way to move whenever the Alien is active in an area.
- Lockers and under-desk spots are temporary. Hide, but when the Alien sniffs at your locker, lean back and hold your breath (the on-screen prompt) so it does not find you.
- Noisemakers and flares are your best friends. Throw a distraction away from your route and the Alien (and humans) will usually go investigate.
- The flamethrower is your panic button. A burst makes the Alien retreat into the vents, but it learns and fuel is scarce. Save it for "I will die otherwise" moments.
- Humans and androids are separate problems. Hostile survivors will shoot on sight; Working Joes are slow, tough, and ignore the Alien (and it ignores them). Avoid gunfire near the Alien because it comes to loud sounds.
- Loot everything. Materials for crafting are in lockers, drawers, and boxes. You will want every scrap on Hard.
Core Mechanics
The Alien's behavior
- The Alien is driven by a director that always knows roughly where you are and keeps it nearby, plus a separate "brain" that hunts using sight and sound. In practice: it will keep circling back to your area, and it reacts to what it actually sees and hears.
- It learns. Use the same trick repeatedly (the same hiding spot, the same flamethrower bursts) and it adapts, searching lockers more thoroughly and becoming less willing to retreat.
- Vents are two-way. When it drops into the ceiling vents you will hear it thumping overhead. When it drops out of a vent, freeze and get behind cover.
- Drool is a tell. Saliva dripping from a ceiling vent means it is right above you.
The motion tracker
Behavior | What it means for you
Blip moves toward you | Something is coming; pick a hiding spot now
No blip | Only means nothing is moving; a still Alien is invisible to it
Directional arrow at the edge | Contact is outside the tracker's range; this is a rough bearing
Using it | Makes a small sound; lower it once you have the info
On Nightmare, the tracker glitches and the HUD map is removed, which makes it far less reliable.
Health, saves, and difficulty
- Health does not regenerate. Heal with medkits you craft.
- Alien attacks are almost always instant death regardless of your health.
- Save stations chime when you approach and use a short card-swipe animation. Enemies can kill you during it.
- Difficulties run from Novice (easiest) up to Hard, plus Nightmare, a post-launch addition in which the motion tracker is unreliable and the mini-map is removed.
Tools and weapons
Tool | Best use
Motion Tracker | Locating moving threats; lower it when not needed
Flashlight | Needed in dark areas, but it can give you away; turn it off near enemies
Maintenance Jack | Pry open panels and doors; melee finisher on androids when they are down
Revolver | Humans; wasteful on androids unless you aim for the head
Shotgun | Close-range androids and humans; very loud
Bolt Gun | Heavy damage against androids
Stun Baton | Stuns androids so you can finish or escape them
Flamethrower | Forces the Alien to retreat, damages humans and androids
Access Tuner | Hack locked doors and terminals
Crafting
You find blueprints as you progress, and each craftable item has an upgraded version once you find the upgrade blueprint. Craft from the pause/crafting wheel using scavenged materials.
Item | What it does
Medkit | Restores health
Noisemaker | Beeping lure; pulls the Alien and humans toward it
Flashbang | Disorients enemies and makes the Alien back off briefly
Smoke Bomb | Blocks line of sight so you can move past humans
EMP Mine | Disables androids and electronic systems
Molotov | Scares off the Alien, burns humans and androids
Pipe Bomb | Heavy explosive damage
Rule of thumb: keep one Molotov (Alien escape), one Noisemaker (lure), and one Medkit ready at all times. Everything else can be crafted on demand.
Rewire points and hacking
Rewire points let you redirect limited station power, for example turning off lights and cameras to hide, activating air purge/sprinklers, or opening doors. Use them to make a route darker and quieter before you move. The Access Tuner handles locked terminals and doors via a short minigame.
Enemies at a Glance
Enemy | Threat | How to handle it
The Alien | Instant death; unkillable | Hide, distract, flame it off; avoid noise
Hostile humans | Guns, travel in groups | Sneak past, smoke bombs, or lure the Alien to them
Working Joes (androids) | Slow, durable, grab and choke | Walk away, EMP, stun baton plus finisher, bolt gun, headshots
Hazmat Joes (later) | Tougher Working Joes, resistant to fire | EMP and avoidance; they are designed to be dodged
Facehuggers (later) | Fast, lethal on contact | Burn them or shoot early; listen for their skittering
The "lure trick": throw a Noisemaker or fire a gun near a group of hostile humans while the Alien is close. It often clears the room for you. Androids ignore the Alien, and the Alien ignores androids.
Campaign Outline (Spoiler-Light)
The campaign has 19 missions. It is long for a horror game (commonly 15-20+ hours on a first careful run) and the mid-game sections are the most punishing.
Stretch | What to expect | Key tip
Opening missions | Arrival on Sevastopol, learning systems, the first Alien encounter | Master lockers, crouching, and Noisemakers here
Early-mid game | Alien roaming freely through hubs; the flamethrower eventually arrives | Once you have it, conserve fuel for emergencies
Mid game | Longer android-heavy stretches mixed with Alien zones | EMP mines and the stun baton handle Working Joes
Late game | Big setpieces, new threats, harder routes | Stockpile crafting materials before long objectives
Final missions (17-19) | Freeing the Torrens ("Free the Torrens" achievement is mission 17) and the endgame | Save at every station you see
Notable segments that have their own achievements:
- Comms: contact your team and escape Comms without being attacked by an android ("Just out of Reach").
- Reactor Maintenance: get through without dying ("Mind Your Step").
Collectibles and Achievements
There are 50 Steam achievements. The collectible types are:
- Archive logs (terminals, notes, and audio logs) — "Voices of Sevastopol" wants 100.
- ID tags from dead people — "The Taken" wants all of them.
- Nostromo logs — "Archivist" wants 10 in the main campaign.
Missable-in-practice achievements worth planning:
Achievement | Requirement | Tip
Survivor | Complete the game on the hardest difficulty setting | Hard was the top difficulty at launch; Nightmare was added later. Play Hard as your main run if you want this in one go
Mercy or Prudence? | Complete the game without killing any humans | Only matters for human NPCs, not androids. Use smoke, stuns, and the lure trick
A True Engineer | Construct one of each craftable item | Craft one of every item as soon as you have the blueprint
Retreat From Fire | Make the Alien retreat with a Molotov | Easy once you have the blueprint
Back Off | Make the Alien retreat with the flamethrower | Happens naturally
My Turn Now | Kill an android using only the Maintenance Jack | Stun or knock down first, then jack
Seegson Security Bypass / Seegson Systems Expert | 10 hacks / 10 minigames | Happens naturally
She's in the Vents... | Use vents 20 times | Happens naturally
Many collectibles can be picked up after the story if you use mission select, so you do not need to hunt every tag on your first nervous run.
DLC and Extra Modes
- Crew Expendable and Last Survivor — short scenarios as the original Alien cast on the Nostromo. Last Survivor has Ellen Ripley setting the self-destruct and reaching the shuttle.
- Survivor Mode — time-based challenge maps with objectives while being hunted; results post to leaderboards.
- Corporate Lockdown, Trauma, Safe Haven, Lost Contact, and The Trigger — Survivor Mode packs with new maps and characters (Corporate Lockdown adds Ransome).
- The Collection bundles the base game and all DLC.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Hiding in a locker the moment the Alien appears. If it is already looking at you, it will find you. Break line of sight first.
- Staring at the tracker. It draws attention and blinds you to what is actually in front of you.
- Firing guns near the Alien. Gunshots pull it straight to you. If you must fight humans, do it far from Alien activity or not at all.
- Hoarding materials forever. Crafting an item uses materials that would otherwise sit capped in your inventory. If you are at the cap, craft.
- Spamming the flamethrower. It learns to shrug off repeated scares, and fuel is limited.
- Saving with the Alien nearby. The swipe animation is long enough to get you killed.
- Running across open rooms. Running is the loudest thing you do.
Advanced Tips
- Stay near vents in Alien zones. Being close to a known vent tells you where it will come from and lets you track its thumping overhead.
- Lead it away before you move. Throw a Noisemaker in the opposite direction from your objective, wait for it to commit, then cross.
- Use humans as bait. Humans draw the Alien's attention when they panic or fire guns.
- Kill lights, not people. Rewire points that turn off lights and cameras make whole rooms safer.
- Lean around corners. Leaning (with the lean keys or controller input) lets you peek without committing your body.
- Learn the "hold breath" prompt. When the Alien stares into your locker, lean back and hold breath without over-holding; holding too long damages you.
- Treat androids as a stamina test. They walk; you can usually just walk away. Do not stop to fight a group.
- Nightmare prep: With no HUD map and a glitchy tracker, memorize routes on Hard first and rely on sound.
PC Tips
- The game runs well on modern hardware. Turn off motion blur and adjust FOV in settings if you are sensitive to them.
- Community mods exist (for example, the MotherVR mod for headset play and community config tweaks); use them at your own risk and back up saves.
- The 2020 Alien Day update added animated library art in an EXTRAS folder in the game directory (Steam: Manage, Browse local files).
FAQ
Can you kill the Alien? No. It can only be driven off with fire or distracted. The story handles it in its own way.
What difficulty should I play? Hard, if you want the intended experience and the Survivor achievement in one run. Normal if you want the story with less frustration.
How long is Alien: Isolation? It is a long campaign for the genre, often 15-20+ hours on a careful first playthrough, spread over 19 missions.
Does the Alien cheat? Not exactly. A director keeps it near you, but it still has to see or hear you to catch you, which is why hiding and silence work.
Is there a sequel? Yes. Creative Assembly confirmed one in October 2024, and it was formally revealed as Alien: Isolation 2 in June 2026 (per Wikipedia). Details and release timing may change, so check official channels.
Is Nightmare mode worth it? Only after a full run. It removes the HUD map, makes the tracker unreliable, and cuts resources. It is not required for any base-game achievement.
Do I need the DLC? No. Crew Expendable and Last Survivor are fun fan service; the Survivor Mode maps are for players who want score-attack challenges.
