What happened to World War 3, what you can still do with it, and a reference guide to how the game worked (modes, maps, loadouts, vehicles and tactics) for anyone who played it or wants a similar game.
Researched September 2026. Current as of the server shutdown on 3 August 2026. The game is offline, so nothing here will change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Shut down: On 3 June 2026 the World War 3 team announced it was ending support. The servers were taken offline on 3 August 2026. In the team's words, after this date "the game will no longer be playable." The Steam store page now reads "World War 3 is no longer available on the Steam store." The game was online-only, and there is no official offline mode or private-server release.
Quick Start: What You Can Still Do
- You can't play matches anymore. Every mode needed the official servers.
- The game may still sit in your Steam library, but launching it won't get you into matches.
- Premium currency (UNC) and purchased items are gone along with the servers. The shutdown announcement doesn't mention refunds. If you have questions about recent purchases, contact Steam Support directly.
- Uninstall to free space. The client took up tens of gigabytes.

- Want to preserve memories? Screenshots and videos in your Steam library remain accessible through Steam's screenshot manager.

How the Game Worked (Reference)
Modes
Mode | Format | Notes
Tactical Ops (TAC OPS) | 20 vs 20 | The core mode: 30 minutes, first to 5,000 score, six objectives (A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2) with vehicles and strikes
Team Deathmatch | 10 vs 10 | 3 rounds of 7 minutes, 50 kills wins a round, no strikes allowed

Domination | Point control | Event-only from Patch 1.2 (April 2025)
FUBAR (and FUBAR Gobi) | Special mode | Event-only from Patch 1.2
Maps
Real-world-inspired locations: Warsaw, Berlin, Moscow (and Moscow Senate), Polyarny, Smolensk, Tokyo / Shibuya, DMZ, Istanbul and Ruins of Gobi. Ruins of Gobi arrived alongside the Stronghold mode in Update 1.1.
Loadouts and customization
World War 3's identity was deep customization: weapons, vehicles, tactical gear and uniforms, with "hundreds of combinations" of weapon components. Loadouts combined:
- Primary and secondary weapons with attachments, like the Polish MSBS-K Grot, the RPG-7 and many NATO and Russian weapons.
- Armor and gear affecting protection and mobility.
- Gadgets and drones for reconnaissance and support.
- Scorestreak-style support: artillery, airstrikes and deployable vehicles.
Vehicles
Tanks and IFVs such as the Leopard 2, ZTZ99 (Type 99) and the Polish Anders platform, alongside lighter vehicles. Vehicles were customizable too.
Ballistics and realism
The developers called their approach "playable realism": an advanced ballistics system, full-body awareness and vehicle physics, aimed at immersion without the pace of a full milsim.
Currencies
- Credits: earned by playing.
- UNC: premium currency (also given as contest prizes).
- Battle passes: a free Evergreen Battle Pass plus seasonal passes like Season 1: Redline.
Strikes
Every loadout carried three strike slots, per the official "Boot Camp" series (2025):
Slot | What went in it
1 (utility) | A UAV or a Jammer
2 (offensive) | Missiles, artillery types or a bombing run
3 (assets) | Vehicles and drones
Strikes were disabled in Team Deathmatch and Stronghold, so they mattered most in Tactical Ops.
Weight classes
Loadouts fell into three weight brackets that changed how fast you moved and animated:
Weight | Effect
Light | 10% faster animations and movement
Medium | Neutral
Heavy | 10% slower animations and movement
Beyond the weapon (which the developers called "the most important part of your loadout"), a loadout also covered armor plates, helmets, gadgets and grenades, and supply packs.
Patch History Under Wishlist Games
After MY.GAMES handed the game over, Wishlist Games restarted version numbering. The official Steam posts give this sequence:
Date | Patch | Key changes
12 September 2023 | Update 3.2 (MY.GAMES era) | Added Hardcore Tactical Ops
14 December 2023 | Ownership change | Wishlist Games statement on taking over World War 3
September 2024 | PTE playtest | Public test ahead of the relaunch; a community vote picked between Hardcore Tactical Ops, FUBAR and Domination
Late October to November 2024 | Account transfer | Accounts moved from MY.GAMES to Wishlist Games during a technical update
December 2024 to January 2025 | Patches 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 | Stabilisation and bug fixes after the transfer
30 January 2025 | Update 1.0 | Free Evergreen Battle Pass for all players
14 March 2025 | Update 1.1 | Stronghold mode and the Ruins of Gobi map
10 April 2025 | Patch 1.2 | New default loadouts (QBZ-95 for Assault, WSW-15 plus RPG for Antitank, MG5 for Support), progression roughly 30% faster, and Hardcore Tactical Ops, Domination and FUBAR moved to event-only
7 May 2025 | Patch 1.3 | New-player matchmaking (first matches against other newcomers and bots), a new flank route on Ruins of Gobi, daily and weekly challenges on the main screen, bots filling Stronghold
24 June 2025 | Patch 1.4 | Obsolete daily challenges removed, some challenges made 30% easier with rewards raised to 1,000 XP, lighting optimisation across several maps
11 August 2025 | Patch 1.5 | Bots added to the Moscow, Berlin, Warsaw, Polar, DMZ and Tokyo Tactical Ops maps, a matchmaking fix, new-player daily challenges, and the Istanbul map returned to rotation
Patch 1.5 was the last content patch. After that, the official posts were articles, contests and maintenance notices until the shutdown notice.
Operators
The 2025 posts introduced operator characters such as the Escorter (French FELIN kit), the Juggernaut (a heavy stormtrooper) and the Crusader (British SAS desert specialist). Earlier seasonal events gave away operators like the KSK operator (summer 2023) and the Trick or Treat operator (Halloween 2023).
Tactics That Worked (For Veterans and Similar Games)
These lessons carry straight over to other large-scale tactical shooters:
- Play the objective. In Tactical Ops, capture points won games, not kill counts.
- Use drones before pushing. Spotting saved lives.
- Coordinate support. Timing artillery with pushes broke defences.
- Armor needed infantry. Tanks without infantry got hunted by RPGs.
- Pick a role. Recon, anti-armor, support and assault loadouts complemented each other.
- Mind the ballistics. Bullet drop and travel time mattered at range.
A Tactical Ops round, start to finish
For anyone who never played it, or wants the feel back in another game, this is how a good 20 vs 20 round usually went:
- Spawn and split. Squads went for different objectives instead of the whole team piling onto the nearest point.
- Scout first. A drone or a recon player spotted defenders, vehicles and snipers before the push.
- Suppress and flank. One squad held attention with fire while another moved around the side through buildings.
- Call support at the right time. Strikes landed on the defenders just before infantry moved in, not after the push had stalled.
- Take and hold. Captured points needed defenders. Rebuild the loadout for defence (anti-armor and machine guns) once a point fell.
- Manage vehicles. Armor pushed with infantry nearby, and anti-armor players hunted enemy tanks from cover.
- Think about score, not kills. Holding more of the points than the enemy is what won Tactical Ops, so a squad chasing kills far from any objective was a squad the team was missing.
Building a loadout
The customization system rewarded thinking about a role instead of just picking the "best gun":
- Assault: a rifle with close-to-mid optics and lighter armor for speed.
- Anti-armor: a launcher such as the RPG-7 with a compact primary for self-defence.
- Support: a machine gun to suppress and hold points.
- Recon: a precision rifle plus drones to spot for the team.
- Weight versus protection: heavier armor slowed you down. Objective runners went lighter, point holders heavier.
After the Shutdown: Housekeeping
- Uninstall: Steam Library, right-click World War 3, Manage, Uninstall. This reclaims tens of gigabytes.
- Library entry: games removed from sale usually stay in your library as licenses, even if they can't connect.
- Screenshots: Steam's screenshot manager (View, Screenshots) keeps any WW3 captures you took.
- Community: the official Discord and Steam discussions are where veterans gathered to reminisce and find new squads.
