A spoiler-light companion to Freebird Games' story adventure: which version to play (original or the 2025 16:9 remaster), how memento links and puzzles work, a chapter-by-chapter outline, the single achievement, the free minisodes, and where the series goes next.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the 16:9 remaster (Serenity Forge, Steam release 28 May 2025, last patched October 2025). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Spoiler policy: This guide explains mechanics and structure and keeps story details to the setup. It's a game best experienced blind, so the "why" of Johnny's wish is never spelled out here.

What It Is

Dr. Eva Rosalene and Dr. Neil Watts work for Sigmund Corp., which gives dying patients a second life, but only inside their memories. The doctors travel backward through a person's memories and implant a new "life" that fulfills a wish, and the patient dies believing it. Their newest patient, Johnny, an elderly man in a house beside a lighthouse, wants to go to the moon. He can't say why.

There's no combat and no fail state. It's a short, story-driven adventure (around four hours) with light puzzles and an acclaimed soundtrack. The game describes itself as "an espresso execution with zero filler."

Release history: Windows on 1 November 2011 (Steam in September 2012), Mac and Linux in January 2014, mobile in May 2017, Nintendo Switch in January 2020, and the 16:9 remaster on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S in October 2024 before it reached Steam in May 2025.

Which Version to Play

Version | What's different | How to launch

16:9 remaster (Serenity Forge, 2025) | Widescreen presentation matching the console versions, extra localizations for the minisodes, and ongoing fixes (an achievement unlock bug, an Act III softlock, a Unity security update) | Select it in Steam's launch options when you press Play

Original version | The 2011 RPG Maker release in 4:3 | Also available in the launch options

Recommendation: Play the remaster for a first run. The original is there for purists and very low-end PCs (the store's minimum spec lists Windows 98 through 11, a Pentium III 800 MHz and 512 MB of RAM). Freebird notes the remaster should run on Steam Deck in compatibility mode.

Quick Start

  • Click to move, or use the keyboard. Walk with the arrow keys or click where you want to go, and press the action key or click to interact.
  • Look for glowing objects. In each memory, interacting with key objects and people releases memory links (energy fragments). Collect all of them in a scene.
  • Activate the memento. Once the links are charged, find the scene's memento, an object tied to an earlier memory, to open the path back in time.
  • Solve the tile puzzle. Each memento jump starts a short puzzle where you flip rows and columns of tiles to restore a picture. There's a move counter, but you can't lose.
  • You can't miss anything critical. The story is linear and all required items are clearly highlighted.
  • Save whenever you can. The game is short, but saving before memory jumps makes it easy to revisit favorite scenes.
  • Use headphones. The music (composed by Kan Gao, with Laura Shigihara's vocal theme "Everything's Alright") is half the experience.
  • Budget a single evening. It works best in one or two sittings.

How It Plays

  • Each scene in Johnny's memory has a set number of memory links to find by interacting with the right people and objects.
  • When the link counter is full, the scene's memento becomes active. Interacting with it charges the jump to the next, earlier memory.
  • If you're stuck, walk around the edges of rooms and talk to every character again. A missed object is almost always the answer.

Tile puzzles

  • The puzzle shows a scrambled image on a grid. Clicking an arrow flips an entire row or column.
  • Goal: flip until the picture is whole.
  • The move counter is for pride only. There's no penalty for going over.
  • Strategy: fix one row or column at a time from the edge, and don't undo progress you've already locked in.

Other bits

  • Occasional short minigames and set pieces break up the walking and reading.
  • Neil and Eva's banter carries a lot of the humor. Talking to your partner at odd moments gets extra lines.

Chapter Outline (Structure Only)

The story moves backward through Johnny's life, with the doctors' present-day scenes in between.

  • Arrival at the house: Meet Johnny's caretaker Lily and her family, and see the house and the lighthouse. Set up the equipment.
  • Johnny's old age: The first memories, with Johnny and his wife River. Learn the machine and the memento system.
  • Middle years: Memories of the lighthouse, River's quirks (paper rabbits, a platypus plush) and their life together. Mysteries pile up.
  • Young adulthood: How Johnny and River got together. The memories grow more fragmented.
  • Childhood: The doctors run into a gap in Johnny's memory that complicates the job.
  • Rebuilding the wish: Eva and Neil disagree about how to give Johnny what he wants. The final act rebuilds the memory into a life that ends with the moon.

Expect the most emotional stretch in the last hour, and don't skip the credits.

Achievement

To the Moon has one Steam achievement, Wish Granted, earned by finishing the story. About 28% of Steam players have it (27.7% on the global stats page). If it didn't unlock in the 16:9 remaster around June 2025, a patch that month fixed the unlock bug, so replaying the ending should trigger it.

The Minisodes and the Series

Title | Year | What it is

To the Moon | 2011 (Steam 2012) | Johnny's story

Sigmund Minisode 1 and 2 | 31 Dec 2013 and 18 Feb 2015 | Free holiday specials with Eva and Neil (the first is a holiday party at their Sigmund Corp. office). They add character context for the later games. Free on Steam

A Bird Story | 2014 | A short, wordless interlude that ties into Finding Paradise

Finding Paradise | 2017 | The sequel: a new patient, same doctors. A 16:9 "remaster+" launched 8 October 2025 as a free update for Steam owners, plus console ports

Impostor Factory | 2021 | The third main entry

The Last Hour of an Epic TO THE MOON RPG | Upcoming | Freebird calls it the conclusion of the series, complementing the Beach Episode. A 25 June 2026 Steam post said the trailer would drop "next Tuesday" (30 June 2026). No release date in the sources used here

Recommended order: To the Moon, the minisodes, A Bird Story, Finding Paradise, Impostor Factory, then the Beach Episode before the upcoming finale.

Related extras on Steam include the soundtrack, the comic collections "Paper Memories - Comics from To the Moon & Finding Paradise" and "[Platypus Comic Strips+] To the Moon, too!", the To the Moon Illustrated Works art book (art by Maki, digital since June 2026) and the Bestest Memories Print & Play Tabletop Game (previously only attached to the Beach Episode). An animated film adaptation is also in production: Wikipedia describes it as partially scripted and supervised by Kan Gao, with Japanese companies leading production and China's Ultron Event Horizon funding it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Reading spoilers first. The whole game hinges on reveals.
  • Rushing through dialogue. Small details (paper rabbits, a platypus, a song) pay off later.
  • Assuming you're stuck because of a bug. Almost always there's an unchecked object or person. Check room edges.
  • Stressing about puzzle move counts. They don't matter.
  • Skipping the minisodes before Finding Paradise. They're free and set things up.
  • Playing the original by default when the remaster is available in the launch options.

Advanced Tips

  • Listen for recurring motifs. The soundtrack's leitmotifs signal connections between memories.
  • Replay for foreshadowing. On a second playthrough, early lines take on new meaning.
  • Softlock in Act III (remaster)? It was fixed in June 2025. Make sure the game is updated through Steam.
  • Language options: Supported languages include English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Korean, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, Turkish and Ukrainian.
  • Steam Deck: Use the remaster with Proton compatibility, or the original if you run into issues.
