Everything a first-time player needs to enjoy (and survive) the original 2007 Witcher: how its unusual rhythm-based combat works, the alchemy and talent systems, a chapter-by-chapter outline with the choices that matter, and tips for playing on a modern PC.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final Enhanced Edition Director's Cut release (Apple silicon support added November 2023). Classic game; no balance patches expected. A full remake by Fool's Theory is in development.
What This Edition Is
Version | What it adds
The Witcher (2007) | Original release
Enhanced Edition (2008) | Over 5,000 rewritten and re-recorded English lines, 200+ new gesture animations, an alchemy ingredient sack with sort/stack, much faster loading, and two bonus adventures
Director's Cut | The Enhanced Edition without the censorship applied to the North American version (mainly the romance cards)
The Steam version (app 20900) is the Enhanced Edition Director's Cut. Its bonus adventures, The Price of Neutrality and Side Effects, are launched from the main menu's Adventures option.
Quick Start
- Combat is timing, not mashing. Click once to attack, then click again when the cursor turns into a flaming sword to chain the combo. Clicking early breaks the chain.
- Pick the right sword. Steel for humans and most animals, silver for monsters and the supernatural.
- Pick the right style. Strong for heavy or armored enemies, Fast for agile enemies, Group when surrounded. The icon near your portrait shows which you're using.
- Read books. You cannot harvest ingredients from monsters or herbs until you've learned about them. Buy and read every bestiary and herbalism book you find, especially in the Prologue and Chapter 1.
- Meditate to level up. Talents are spent only while meditating, at a campfire or in an inn. Meditation also lets you brew potions and pass time.
- Brew and drink potions before hard fights. Swallow (regeneration) and Tawny Owl (Vigor regeneration) carry the early game. Watch your Toxicity.
- Apply oils. Weapon oils add big damage against specific enemy types. Necrophage Oil and Specter Oil make early monster fights far easier.
- Choices are delayed. Many decisions pay off chapters later. Don't reload immediately; the game is designed around living with outcomes.
- Save often, in multiple slots. Some quests can break or lock out; rotating saves is standard practice for this game.
Controls (mouse-driven)
Action | How it works
Draw steel or silver sword | Sword hotkeys (shown on the HUD)
Switch style | Style hotkeys or click the style icons by your portrait
Select sign | Sign hotkeys or the sign icons on the HUD
Cast sign | Right mouse
Attack / chain | Left mouse, timed on the flaming sword cursor
Dodge | Double-tap a direction
Meditate | Interact with a campfire or an inn's fireplace/bed
Hotkeys are all rebindable in Options; check them before the Prologue fight. There are three camera modes: two isometric high/low views (point and click) and an over-the-shoulder view (WASD). Most players use the over-the-shoulder view for exploration and the high isometric view for big fights.
Core Systems
Combat Styles
Style | Sword | Best against
Strong | Steel or silver | Slow, heavy, armored humans and big monsters
Fast | Steel or silver | Agile enemies, most humans, fleet monsters
Group | Steel or silver | Multiple enemies around you
Each style has its own talent line on each sword, so six combat trees in total. You don't need all six; many players focus on Strong and Fast for both swords and add Group later.
Signs
Sign | Effect | Notes
Aard | Telekinetic blast; knocks down and stuns | Stunned enemies can be finished with a coup de grace; also breaks some walls
Igni | Fire damage | Great against groups and certain monsters
Yrden | Magic trap | Holds enemies in place
Quen | Protective shield | Excellent defensive talent line
Axii | Charms an enemy to fight for you | Strong in late game
Signs use Vigor (the yellow bar); Tawny Owl and Stamina talents keep it flowing in sign-heavy fights.
Attributes and Talents
- Talents come as Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Early levels give mostly Bronze, later levels Silver and Gold.
- Four attributes: Strength (damage, health, resistance to knockdown), Dexterity (dodge, parry, stun chance), Stamina (Vigor and health, resistances), and Intelligence (sign power and alchemy).
- Put early points into Strength and Dexterity to unlock combat talents, plus Intelligence's alchemy talents so you can craft stronger potions and bombs.
Alchemy
- Every potion needs an alcohol base (for example, Alcohest or Dwarven Spirit) plus ingredients.
- Ingredients contain substances: Vitriol, Rebis, Aether, Quebrith, Hydragenum, Vermilion, and Fulgur. Some also contain Albedo, Nigredo, or Rubedo, which add a bonus effect when all ingredients share it.
- You need the formula or the correct mix of substances. Experimenting without a formula is risky: bad mixes can poison you.
- Toxicity rises with each potion. Too high and you take damage and see visual effects. Meditating clears it.
Potion | Effect | When to use
Swallow | Accelerated health regeneration | Every tough fight
Tawny Owl | Faster Vigor regeneration | Sign-heavy fights
Cat | Night vision | Crypts and night quests
White Raffard's Decoction | Instant large heal | Emergencies
Thunderbolt | Increased damage | Boss fights
Blizzard | Faster reactions | Tough melee fights
De Vries' Extract | See invisible enemies | Wraith-type enemies
White Honey | Cancels potion effects and toxicity | Resetting toxicity
Oil | Best against
Brown Oil | Early damage boost against humans and beasts
Necrophage Oil | Drowners, ghouls, and other necrophages
Specter Oil | Wraiths and specters
Argentia | A strong all-round silver-sword oil
Hanged Man's Venom | Humans
Chapter Outline and Key Choices
Chapter | Area | What happens / key choices
Prologue | Kaer Morhen | Witchers' fortress attacked; ends with the fight against Koschey. Learn combat here.
Chapter I | Outskirts of Vizima | The Beast investigation. Final choice concerns the witch Abigail: protect her or hand her to the villagers.
Chapter II | Vizima: Temple Quarter and swamp | Salamandra investigation. Several investigation paths; your companion choices set up later chapters.
Chapter III | Vizima: Trade Quarter | Alvin, the Salamandra trail, and major side quests including the Striga. Decide whether Shani or Triss looks after Alvin.
Chapter IV | Murky Waters | Pastoral village with some of the best quests; the Lady of the Lake quest line and the fight with Dagon. Also where the Order vs. Scoia'tael conflict escalates.
Chapter V | Old Vizima | Civil war in the city. Commit to the Order of the Flaming Rose, the Scoia'tael, or stay neutral.
Epilogue | Frozen battlefield | Final confrontation with Jacques de Aldersberg, Grand Master of the Order.
Missables and Tips by Chapter
- Prologue and Chapter I: Read every book you can afford (monster and herbalism knowledge). Chapter I's fields and crypts are where you gather the first ingredients for Swallow and Tawny Owl, so learn herbalism early.
- Chapter II: Many side quests fail when Chapter II ends. Finish contracts (monster hunts posted on noticeboards) before triggering the final story sequence.
- Chapter III: Several investigation threads and relationships resolve here. The Alvin decision affects later scenes.
- Chapter IV: The Lady of the Lake quest line is the path to the best silver sword, Aerondight. Do all Murky Waters side quests before leaving; they don't carry over.
- Chapter V: Faction choice locks in companion outcomes and some quests. Save before your final decision.
General rule: each chapter locks its area when you progress, so finish side quests and contracts before advancing the main quest.
Build Archetypes
Build | Focus | Signs | Notes
Swordmaster | Strong and Fast silver/steel styles; Strength and Dexterity | Aard for stuns | Simple, reliable, and the easiest first playthrough
Sign Witcher | Intelligence, Igni and Aard talents | Igni, Aard, Quen | Deals with groups well; needs Vigor support
Alchemist | Intelligence alchemy talents; strong potions and bombs | Quen | Potion-heavy style that trivialises bosses when prepared
A balanced approach works best: combat styles for each sword, Aard and Igni, and enough alchemy to brew Swallow and Thunderbolt.
Minigames
- Dice poker: Opponents range from novice to master. Winning chains unlock quests and achievements.
- Fistfighting: Available in several chapters; timing and blocking are simpler than sword combat.
- Drinking contests: Short but they have tangible rewards.
Modern PC Tips
- Runs on Windows and macOS (Apple silicon support was added in November 2023; macOS 11 is now the minimum).
- If the game crashes at startup on modern Windows, run it once as administrator and make sure your GPU drivers are up to date.
- Widescreen resolutions work, but the UI isn't scaled for high DPI; many players use 1080p or enable display scaling in Windows.
- Popular mods include Full Combat Rebalance for players wanting harder combat. Install mods only after finishing a vanilla playthrough.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Mashing attack. It resets combos; wait for the flaming sword cursor.
- Ignoring books. Without knowledge, monsters drop nothing useful for alchemy.
- Using the wrong sword. Steel on monsters or silver on humans deals much less damage.
- Forgetting Toxicity. Drinking three potions before a fight can kill you if toxicity is too high.
- Advancing chapters with unfinished quests. Many are locked out once you move on.
- Spreading talents too thin. Pick two or three core combat trees and a sign line first.
Advanced Tips
- Coup de grace: Aard stuns or knocks down enemies; walk up and attack for an instant kill.
- Oils + potions + right style turns boss fights from walls to trivial.
- Stock alcohol bases. Keep plenty of Alcohest or Dwarven Spirit; you'll need them for every brew.
- Meditate before big fights so you can spend new talents and brew fresh potions.
- Use Group style when surrounded — it hits everyone around you and is far more efficient than single-target styles.
FAQ
Is this the same as the Director's Cut? Yes. The Steam Enhanced Edition Director's Cut includes all Enhanced Edition improvements and restores content censored in North America.
Do my choices carry into The Witcher 2? Some do. The Witcher 2 lets you import a Witcher 1 save, affecting a few details (such as items and minor story nods).
What's the best silver sword? Aerondight, earned from the Lady of the Lake quest line in Chapter IV.
Can I play it on Mac? Yes. Apple silicon (M1/M2) support was added in November 2023.
Is there a remake? Yes. The Witcher Remake was announced in October 2022; Fool's Theory is building it in Unreal Engine 5 with CD PROJEKT RED supervising.
Which faction should I pick? There's no wrong choice. Order and Scoia'tael each have their own story beats; neutral gives a middle path. Save before Chapter V's decision and replay if curious.
