How to survive mud, snow and rivers in SnowRunner: driving technique, winching, truck classes and tires, upgrades, contract strategy, the best early-game order, and what's new with Season 18 and the Mercedes-Benz Trucks Dual Pack 2.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Patch 43.0 (Mercedes-Benz Trucks Dual Pack 2, 2 September 2026) and Year 5 Season 18 "Patch & Power". Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Slow is fast. Momentum helps, but gunning it in deep mud just digs you in. Ease off, switch to a low gear, and crawl.
- Use AWD and the diff lock before you enter mud, water or a steep climb, not after you're stuck. Some trucks have them permanently engaged, some let you toggle them, and some lack them unless you fit an upgrade.
- Winch early and often. A tree, pole or another truck is your lifeline. Winching before you're buried saves time.
- Scout first. Drive a light scout truck to reveal roads, watchtowers and hidden upgrades before sending a heavy truck.
- Climb every watchtower. Watchtowers reveal large parts of the map and the points of interest around them.
- Hunt for upgrades. Engines, gearboxes, suspensions and AWD/diff-lock add-ons are hidden around the maps. Finding them is often more valuable than buying a new truck.
- Match tires to terrain. Highway tires are fast on roads and useless in mud; mud and chained tires are slow but grip.
- Unlock the garage in each region. Garages let you swap trucks and repair/refuel locally.
- Fuel is a real constraint. Carry fuel on long runs, or plan routes near fuel stations.
Regions and Structure
- The base game includes three regions: Michigan (mud and forests), Alaska (snow and ice), and Taymyr (Russian tundra with deep mud and rivers).
- Each region contains several maps with contracts, tasks and missions. Completing them earns money and XP.
- Rank (player level) unlocks trucks and upgrades in the store.
- Seasons (sold in yearly passes) add new regions, trucks and objectives. Season 18 "Patch & Power" (the second season of the Year 5 Pass, June 2026) is the latest.
Driving Mechanics
Gears
- Auto is fine on firm ground.
- Low gears (and low range) give maximum torque for mud, snow and climbs. Most drivers switch to low before any obstacle.
- High gear is for roads only.
- Reverse is often the way out: back out of a bad line rather than pushing deeper.
AWD and Differential Lock
- AWD drives every axle; essential in mud and snow.
- Diff lock forces wheels on an axle to turn together, preventing one wheel from spinning uselessly. Engage it before tricky terrain.
- Some trucks have these built in; others need them as add-ons or upgrades, and some trucks only have them always on or not at all. Check the truck's stats before choosing it for a job.
Winching
- Aim the winch at trees, poles, rocks and other vehicles.
- Pull slowly while driving so the winch and your wheels work together.
- Some trucks have a free winch usable without the engine; others need the engine running.
- Rescue winching: a stuck truck can be pulled out by another truck on firm ground.
Water, Mud and Snow
- Water depth matters: engine flooding happens if you drive too deep without a snorkel.
- Mud has different depths; rutted tracks from other vehicles are sometimes better than fresh mud and sometimes worse.
- Snow hides the road surface; chained tires are king in Alaska and Taymyr.
- Ice: frozen lakes and icy roads are slippery; take it slow with chains.
Truck Classes
Class | Strength | Weakness
Scout | Fast, light, reveals the map, pulls small trailers | Tiny cargo capacity
Highway | Fast and fuel-efficient on roads | Useless off-road
Off-road | Balanced; the everyday cargo workhorse | Moderate speed
Heavy duty | Big cargo and cranes | Heavy, thirsty
Heavy | Enormous power for the worst terrain | Slow, very heavy, expensive fuel
Recent examples from Season 18: the Mercer R230 (an off-road cargo hauler with excellent maneuverability and crawler suspension) and the HIB Billert M816 (a highway truck with strong speed and low fuel use).
Early-Game Trucks (Michigan)
You start in Michigan with the Chevrolet CK1500 (a scout) and the International Fleetstar F2070A (a cargo truck). The CK1500 is your map-revealer; the Fleetstar does early deliveries. More trucks are found abandoned on the maps or unlocked by rank in the store.
Tires
Tire type | Best for
Highway | Paved roads
Allroad | Mixed roads and light off-road
Off-road | Most dirt and mud
Mud | Deep mud
Chained | Snow, ice and the toughest mud
Wider or bigger tires often add float in mud. Tire availability depends on truck and unlocked upgrades.
Contracts and Money
- Contracts are the big multi-stage jobs that open roads, bridges and new areas.
- Tasks are smaller side jobs; good early money.
- Cargo types include wooden planks, metal beams, bricks, concrete slabs and service spare parts, each loaded at a matching warehouse or cargo loading zone.
- Rebuild bridges and clear rocks via contracts first; they make every future delivery faster.
- Don't buy expensive trucks early. Found trucks plus found upgrades carry you through most of Michigan.
Suggested Early Order
- Scout Michigan's first map with the CK1500 and climb the watchtowers.
- Recover abandoned trucks and pick up hidden upgrades.
- Do the cheap, nearby tasks that repair roads and bridges.
- Use the Fleetstar (with upgrades) for early cargo contracts.
- Unlock garages and move to Michigan's harder maps.
- Expand to Alaska once you have a truck that handles snow and chained tires.
- Save Taymyr for when your fleet includes heavy trucks with strong AWD and diff locks.
Upgrades and Customization
- Engines add torque and top speed; gearboxes add low-range gears; suspensions raise clearance.
- AWD and diff lock add-ons transform some trucks entirely.
- Snorkels raise safe water depth.
- Add-ons like cranes, fuel tanks, repair kits and trailers let one truck do several jobs.
- Found upgrades (usually marked as question marks on the map until scouted) are free once collected.
Mercedes-Benz Updates (2026)
- Mercedes-Benz Trucks Dual Pack 2 (2 September 2026, standalone DLC, not in the Year 5 Pass) adds the Mercedes-Benz NG3850 (a heavy-duty hauler) and the Mercedes-Benz LG1519 "Mamute" (a rugged 6x6 with special suspension and strong pulling power). New add-ons include the Mercedes 3850 Maintenance Frame Addon and Extended Frame, and Mamute covered flatbed and sideboard bed options.
- Patch 42 (Season 18) reworked the Mercedes-Benz Actros 3332 with an extended frame, a high saddle, a lower center of gravity and stiffer suspension, and expanded Zetros crane and frame combinations.
- Patch 43.0 fixed many Actros and Zetros add-on issues (winch points, lights, crane clipping) and added 90-degree rotation for the LC 3.8 Loading Crane.
Season 18: Patch & Power
- A new region, Chiapas (Mexico), with two new maps and SnowRunner's first jungle biome: sandy beaches, forests and muddy mangroves.
- Contracts center on building a geothermal power plant after tropical storms.
- New trucks: Mercer R230 and HIB Billert M816.
- New Gooseneck Semi-Trailer with Parts.
- Released 25 June 2026 on most platforms; Nintendo Switch 2 followed.
When You're Stuck: A Recovery Checklist
Work down this list before giving up on a truck:
- Stop spinning. Every second of wheelspin digs deeper. Let off the throttle.
- Check AWD, diff lock and gear. Engage both if available and drop to low gear.
- Rock it. Short reverse, short forward, in a straight line, to climb out of your own rut.
- Winch. Look for the nearest tree, pole or rock, even behind you; winching backwards out of a bad line is often easier.
- Drop weight. If you're overloaded, unloading cargo (you can pick it up again later with a crane truck) can be the difference.
- Call a second truck. Winch to another vehicle parked on firm ground, or tow.
- Recover to the garage as the last resort. It gets the truck home, at a cost; check the confirmation screen for what you'll lose.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Flooring it in mud. You'll dig in. Low gear, steady throttle.
- Turning AWD and diff lock on too late. Engage before the obstacle.
- Skipping the scout. Heavy trucks lost on unknown roads burn fuel and time.
- Overloading a weak truck. Heavy cargo on a light chassis sinks and tips.
- Driving into water without checking depth. Flooded engines end runs.
- Ignoring found upgrades. They're often better than store purchases.
- Buying the biggest truck first. Heavies are slow and thirsty on easy maps.
Advanced Tips
- Two-truck convoys let one truck winch the other through the worst sections.
- Pre-position fuel trailers or trucks near long mud stretches.
- Use cranes to self-load cargo in the field and recover tipped trucks.
- Winch sideways to straighten a sliding truck on slopes.
- Hard Mode (a separate mode with harsher conditions) is great for veterans after a normal playthrough.
- Co-op lets up to four players share a world; one player can scout while others haul.
- Mods: PC and consoles have mod.io mod support for trucks and maps. Check compatibility after big patches.
