Covers your first hours in Ashenfall through the 1.0 endgame: skills, gear tiers, boss order, base building, the reworked combat, and the Scorned Wilderness raid against Kuldra.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the 1.0 full release (September 15, 2026) and hotfix 1.0.0.4/1.0.0.5. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • You drop everything when you die. You have to go back to where you died to get it. Keep a backup kit at base: a melee weapon, shield, a bow with arrows, a staff, water, and cooked food.
  • Keep Food, Water, and Rest high. Food drives health recovery and Water drives stamina recovery. Keeping the bars near full makes recovery noticeably faster.
  • Follow the quests. The main chain (Dragon Slayer and beyond) gates regions, bosses, and gear tiers in a sensible order.
  • Woodcutting and Mining first. They're safe, feed Construction and Artisan, and unlock useful skill spells early.
  • Build Lodestones. They're your fast-travel network. You can also use them to escape a dragon or warband attack, and your base won't be destroyed while you're gone.
  • Learn to parry. Since 1.0, parrying gives back stamina and opens a Visceral follow-up attack. It's the most important combat skill in the game.
  • Vault Cores and chests respawn after a while, so vaults can be farmed again for materials.
  • Crossplay is opt-in per world. Turn it on for a world and share the invite code with friends on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, or Switch 2.

What 1.0 Added (September 15, 2026)

Skill spells worth getting early

Dragonwilds uses skill spells, magic that helps you gather and craft. Since 1.0 you can put four of them on quick-cast hotkeys on the skill spell wheel.

Spell | Use

Windstep | Cross gaps and climb awkward terrain

Axtral Projection | Cut several trees at once (upgraded to three spectral axes in 1.0)

Rocksplosion | Break mineable deposits much faster

Superheat | Speed up stations that use heat (furnaces etc.)

Personal Chest | Unlocks at Construction 40. A 20-slot storage you can open anywhere, even in vaults, synced with the Personal Chest fixture at base

Home Teleport | Return to your bed (Runecrafting)

Overdrive | Speeds up processing (Artisan, added in 1.0)

Runic Refund | 30% chance to keep runes when casting (added in 1.0)

First Day Priorities

  • Do the tutorial quests and gather wood, stone, and fibres as you go.
  • Set up a small base close to water and near several resources. Put down a bed early. It's your respawn point and your Home Teleport target.
  • Secure food and clean water. Cook everything, because raw food is a bad trade. Keep plenty of clean water.
  • Improve tools early. Better axes and pickaxes speed up everything else.
  • Build storage and crafting stations (workbench, furnace, cooking station) close together.
  • Build a Lodestone once you can. It needs a Vault Core, stone, and Rune Essence. You'll find Vault Cores in vaults. Tip: shoot floating Rune Essence rocks with arrows to bring them down.
  • Get ready for Dragon Slayer. A full Iron-era kit, plenty of cooked food, and health potions.

Progression and Boss Order

The main route runs through the regions in tier order. Your armour tier should roughly match each step.

Step | Region | Key boss / goal | Suggested gear tier

1 | Brynmoor, Ghornfell | Learn combat, vaults, first gear | Bronze → Iron

2 | Velgar's Rise | Velgar (Dragon Slayer quest) | Iron

3 | Fellhollow | Imaru, the Revenant Dragon, at Hope's Fall (Withering Heights) | Steel / Green Dragonhide

4 | Dowdun Reach | Black Knight Titan at Black Knight's Fortress | Mithril / Blue Dragonhide

5 | Umbral Sands | Fuzan, the Fire Dragon (Icthlarin's Little Helper). Optional: Kalphite Queen, Tok-Xil, Red dragon, Fight Cave | Adamant / Red Dragonhide

6 | Scorned Wilderness | Kuldra, the God-Eater raid (Regicide) | Rune and beyond

Mini-bosses worth knowing: the Abyssal demon (Whispering Swamp, Bloodblight Swamp, Fractured Plains), the Garou King (Highlands Castle, Dog Days quest), Tok-Xil (Umbral Sands and the Fight Cave, Brink of Extinction quest), and Green, Blue, and Red dragons around the regions. Vault bosses guard the end of many vaults.

Boss tips

  • Velgar: Your first real gear check. Bring a full Iron set, a shield, lots of cooked food, and health potions. Learn its attack patterns before going all-in on damage.
  • Abyssal demon: It can't hit targets on high ground. Get on the ruins or roofs and attack from above.
  • Imaru: Fellhollow has its own survival pressure. Prepare for the region's hazards, not just the boss, and bring enough food for a long fight.
  • Black Knight Titan: The Dowdun Reach capstone. Clear the region's vaults first so you're fully in Mithril.
  • Fuzan: Bring a complete loadout (melee, ranged, magic, consumables), not just your newest weapon.
  • Kuldra: No building in the raid area, so bring what you need from The Hub. Go with a coordinated group, full Rune-or-better gear, and plenty of consumables. The first clear guarantees the Dragon Kiteshield.

Combat (post-1.0)

  • Light combos, not constant swinging. Always keep enough stamina for at least one dodge or block.
  • Parry: A successful parry gives back 50% stamina and lets you do a Visceral Strike.
  • Special Attack bar: Specials now use their own bar, which recharges over time, instead of stamina.
  • Sprint Attacks: You can open with a special attack out of a sprint.
  • Cancelling: You can dodge or block out of attacks, gathering, and spellcasting.
  • Controller layout changed in 1.0: R1/RB is primary attack and R2/RT is special attack.
  • Staff elements: Switch your staff element to suit the fight. Fire is good against groups.
  • Melee enchants: Enchant Weapon spells now last 5 minutes. Tempest Shield has a 45-second cooldown.
  • Ranged: Spectral Arrows last 5 minutes. At Ranged 60, enchanted crossbow bolts trigger more often.
  • New Magic spells: Enfeeble and Vengeance were added in 1.0.

Base Building and Economy

  • Pick a central base, then expand with Lodestones. Each new region is easier if you set up a small outpost with storage and a bed.
  • Construction XP trick: Building structures gives XP, and deleting them refunds materials. Per-structure cooldowns stop you from abusing it indefinitely, but cycling different structures levels Construction quickly.
  • Eye of Oculus (Construction) now pulls in recycled materials, and there are new pet perches.
  • Storage Ledger (Artisan) automatically sorts your inventory into storage.
  • Farming (added December 2025) gives steady food and potion ingredients. Plant before long trips.
  • Potions: Healing Potions use Harralander, Redberries, a Clay Vessel, and Charcoal. Antipoison protects you from new poison (for example in the Whispering Swamp) but doesn't cure poison you already have.

Threats

  • Dragon attacks and warbands can hit your base. You can fast-travel away. Your base won't be destroyed while you're gone.
  • Dire Wolves and Garou were toned down for new players in 1.0, but they're still dangerous early.
  • PvP worlds: Other players can loot your grave. Keep story playthroughs on PvE settings.
  • Durability: Repair gear before boss attempts. Breaking mid-fight is a common way to wipe.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Going out without a backup kit. Dying without spare gear at base makes corpse runs miserable.
  • Letting Food/Water/Rest drop low. Recovery slows down and fights get much harder.
  • Skipping tool upgrades. Everything takes longer with low-tier tools.
  • Rushing to the next region under-geared. Each region expects its gear tier.
  • Ignoring parry after 1.0. Stamina management is built around parrying now.
  • Using Antipoison after you're poisoned. It only protects you, so drink it first.
  • Not placing a bed at new outposts. Your respawn and Home Teleport both use it.

Advanced Tips

  • Farm vaults. Vault Cores and chests respawn. Run your favourite vaults for Lodestone materials and loot.
  • Fire staff for crowds, and a single-target weapon for bosses. Switching mid-fight is quick.
  • Bind your skill spell wheel hotkeys to Windstep, Rocksplosion, Axtral Projection, and Personal Chest for faster gathering runs.
  • Plan your Scorned Wilderness logistics. You can't build in the raid, so set up storage, crafting, and a bed in The Hub before attempting Kuldra.
  • Duo/quad roles: In groups, split melee tank, ranged, and magic support so special attack bars and enchant timers don't overlap.
  • Abyssal Whip needs a recipe from Umbral Sands to reach Masterwork quality. Look out for it if you like whip playstyles.
  • Keep an eye on limited events such as Wrath of the Dragon (live from September 19). They add rewards that aren't in the base progression.
