A practical guide to PUBG on PC: landing, looting, weapons, the blue zone, maps, ranked, and everything that changed in Update 43.1.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 43.1 (PC: September 10, 2026; console: September 17, 2026) and Ranked Season 43. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- PUBG is free to play. The optional BATTLEGROUNDS Plus upgrade unlocks Ranked and a few extras; Normal matches are free.
- Land away from the plane path at first. Hot drops teach gunfights, but you learn looting, rotating, and the zone better by landing on the edges.
- Level 2 helmet and vest are the minimum. Helmet level decides whether a sniper headshot kills you.
- Carry an AR plus a scoped weapon (DMR or sniper). That covers almost every fight.
- Always know where the next zone is. The blue zone kills more new players than enemies do. Open the map (M) often.
- Vehicles are rotations, not weapons. Use them to reach the zone early, then get out before the final circles.
- Heal behind hard cover. Energy drinks and painkillers give boost, which regenerates health and increases movement speed.
- Update 43.1 added kicks. You can kick open doors, break windows and wooden fences, and kick vending machines to get items faster.
- Sound tells you everything. Play with headphones; footsteps, vehicles, and gunfire direction matter.
Controls Worth Knowing (PC defaults)
Action | Key
Free look | Hold Alt
Lean left / right | Q / E
Toggle fire mode | B
Crouch / Prone | C / Z
Hold breath (scoped) | Shift
Adjust zeroing | Page Up / Page Down
Map | M
Inventory | Tab
Interact / loot | F
Vehicle boost | Shift (in vehicle)
Rebind to taste, but learn leaning early — peeking while leaning shows far less of your body.
The Match Flow
- Plane and drop. Jump, aim for your target, and dive by holding forward. Update 43.1 standardized automatic parachute deployment to 250m (it previously varied between 150m and 330m).
- Early loot. Weapon, armor, helmet, backpack, meds. Don't loot every building on the map.
- First rotation. Move toward the first safe zone early, preferably with a vehicle.
- Mid-game. Take a strong building or ridge inside the zone. Third-party fights you hear but avoid long fights in the open.
- Endgame. Smaller zones; cover, grenades, and smokes matter more than gun choice.
The blue zone
- The playable area shrinks in phases. Outside it you take damage that increases every phase.
- Red zone: random bombing areas; get indoors.
- Care packages drop from planes periodically and contain top-tier loot, including crate-only weapons such as the AWM.
Gear and Healing
Armor
Item | Why it matters
Helmet (Lv1–Lv3) | Reduces head damage. A Lv3 helmet is the only helmet that can survive certain sniper headshots.
Vest (Lv1–Lv3) | Reduces body damage; higher levels also add inventory space.
Backpack (Lv1–Lv3) | Inventory space. Lv2 is plenty for most players.
Armor has durability; swap damaged armor for a fresh set when you can.
Healing
Item | Use
Bandage | Small heal, slow; caps below full health.
First Aid Kit | Heals most of your health.
Med Kit | Full heal, slow to use.
Energy Drink / Painkiller | Boost — regenerates HP over time and, at higher boost, speeds you up.
Adrenaline Syringe | Maximum boost.
Keep your boost bar topped up before engagements and zone moves.
New in 43.1: carrying and ground use
You can now carry and throw healing items, attachments, armor, ammunition and throwables (for example, to a teammate) without using inventory space, and use items directly from the ground (heals, deployables, mortars, C4). Great for quickly healing off a death crate.
Weapons
Tier picks (floor loot)
Class | Standout picks | Notes
Assault Rifle | M416, Beryl M762, AUG, ACE32 | The M416 is the easiest to control. The Beryl hits harder but kicks hard — worth it with a compensator and vertical grip.
DMR | SLR, Mini 14, SKS, Mk12 | Semi-auto, great for mid-range pressure.
Bolt-action sniper | Kar98k, M24 | One-shot a Lv2 helmet headshot.
SMG | Vector, UMP45, MP5K | Close-range buildings and early game.
Shotgun | S12K, DBS, S686 | Hot drops and final circles indoors.
LMG | RPD, M249, MG3 | See 43.1 nerfs below.
Care-package weapons are the strongest in their class. The AWM is the headline — a headshot kills through any helmet.
Update 43.1 LMG nerf
LMGs (RPD, M249, MG3) were toned down: slower ADS transition (0.30s to 0.37s), smaller recoil-control bonus when crouched or prone, reduced damage against vehicles, and 30% fewer world spawns. They are still useful for suppressing, but ARs are the safer pick.
Attachments priority
- Compensator (ARs) / Suppressor (snipers)
- Vertical or Half grip
- Extended magazine
- Tactical stock (M416 etc.)
- Scopes: Red Dot/Holo for close, 3x or 4x for AR mid-range, 6x (can be set lower) or 8x for snipers.
Maps
As of Update 43.1:
Map | Size | What to know
Erangel | 8x8 | The original. Fixed in normal match every week and currently hosts the Jujutsu Kaisen collaboration areas.
Miramar | 8x8 | Desert with long sightlines; bring a sniper and a vehicle.
Taego | 8x8 | Home of the Comeback BR system, which gives eliminated players a second chance; very popular in Asia.
Vikendi | 6x6 | Snow map; footprints in the snow reveal movement.
Deston | 8x8 | Verticality with skyscrapers, ascenders, and swamps.
Rondo | 8x8 | Newest large map; dense cities and varied terrain.
Sanhok | 4x4 | Jungle, fast and aggressive.
Karakin / Paramo | small | Quick matches; Karakin has breakable walls, Paramo has dynamic layouts.
Map service (43.1)
- Normal match: Erangel is always available; other maps rotate weekly by region. PC rotations happen Wednesdays at 02:00 UTC, console on Thursdays at 07:00 UTC.
- Ranked (Season 43): Erangel, Miramar, Taego, Rondo — 25% each.
- KAKAO: Erangel, Taego, and Sanhok are always in the fixed pool.
Ranked
- Requirements: BATTLEGROUNDS Plus and reaching the required account level.
- Tiers: Bronze through Master, with Top 500 players shown on the leaderboard.
- Season 43 changes: leaderboards reset, the minimum performance requirements for Gold and above were raised in Solo and Duo, and TPP Duo was discontinued in the SA region. Check the in-game Ranked tab for this season's tier rewards.
- New leaderboards (43.1): Ranked RP, Wins, Kills by weapon, and Clan XP, with top 500 listed and a percentile for everyone else. Ranked updates every 4 hours; others hourly.
Ranked tip: placement points matter a lot. A consistent top 10 finish with a couple of kills beats a hot-drop-and-die approach.
Limited Events (43.1)
- Jujutsu Kaisen collaboration: themed areas on Erangel and a JJK gift box that reveals a Satoru Gojo statue with a special effect.
- Solo Deathmatch: back until mid-October (PC through October 14; console through October 22).
- Duo Rumble (PC): Saturday stages from September 12 to October 14 across AS, EU, and NA regions, with G-Coin prizes for placements and BP for participating.
- Intense Battle Royale: now has a detailed results screen.
Water Combat (43.1)
Swimming is 25% faster, and you can now use sidearms and throwables from the water surface (hip-fire and ADS, but no shoulder fire). Boats take a flat 50% damage from firearms and can be repaired with an All-in-One Repair Kit — water rotations are more viable than before.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Looting too long. You don't need every attachment. Move with the zone.
- Driving into the final circles. Vehicles are loud and give away your position.
- Peeking the same spot twice. Change angle after every shot.
- Healing in the open. Always break line of sight first.
- Ignoring zeroing and bullet drop. Long shots need you to aim above the target or set zeroing.
- Picking up an LMG as your main gun post-43.1. They're weaker now; take an AR.
- Crossing open fields without smokes. Carry at least two smoke grenades mid-to-late game.
Advanced Tips
- Edge vs. center play: Playing the zone edge means you only watch one direction; the center gives more options but more exposure. Pick one and commit.
- Use the compass for callouts: "Two at 245, behind the rock" beats "over there."
- Spray transfer: tap-fire at range, full-auto only inside 50m for most ARs.
- Vehicle cover: a destroyed car still blocks bullets. Park before you need cover.
- Throwables win the endgame. Frags, molotovs, and stuns flush players out of final-circle cover.
- Kick for tempo: kicks break windows and wooden doors quickly — useful for surprise entries and faster vending machine loot.
- Emergency Parachute: it now deploys as low as 9m, but you take fall damage if you land before it fully opens.
