Everything you need for a strong run through Metro: Last Light Redux: play-style choice, survival systems, stealth, weapons and money, how to earn the good ending, collectibles, the bundled DLC, and achievement tips.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final Redux PC release (no gameplay patches in years; 4A Games is now focused on METRO 2039, dated for February 4, 2027). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Pick your mode carefully. Spartan is the action-leaning version of Last Light; Survival is scarcer and slower (closer to Metro 2033). Ranger Mode is the hardcore, minimal-HUD option layered on top.
- Your watch is your HUD. It shows remaining gas mask filter time and a light that tells you whether enemies can see you. Check it constantly.
- Unscrew lights instead of shooting them. You stay hidden, and turning off 40 lights without breaking them is an achievement (Edison).
- Military-grade ammo (MGR) is money. You can fire it in an emergency, but every round shot is cash gone. Carry and fire the dirty, metro-made rounds.
- Stealth pays off. Most human areas can be cleared without an alarm; several achievements and the good ending reward mercy and quiet play.
- Knock out instead of kill when you want the good ending — and never shoot enemies who surrender.
- Explore every corner. Filters, medkits, MGR, and 43 hidden diary pages are tucked into side rooms.
- Recharge your flashlight. The hand charger keeps your flashlight and night-vision alive; dim light is a sign to pump it.
- Wipe your gas mask when it's fogged, cracked, or splattered, and swap to a fresh mask if it breaks.
Play Styles and Difficulty
Redux lets you choose how the whole campaign is balanced, independent of difficulty:
Setting | What it changes | Who it suits
Spartan | Last Light's original action balance: more ammo and resources, Artyom is a capable soldier | First-timers, story-focused players
Survival | Scarce ammo and filters, slower reloads, more tension (Metro 2033-style) | Players who want survival horror
Ranger Mode | Available on top of the base difficulties: minimal/no HUD, lethal damage both ways, scarce supplies | Veterans and immersion seekers
Achievements: Spartan 2034 (complete in Spartan Mode) and Survivor 2034 (complete in Survival Mode) are separate, so plan two runs or accept one missing.
Core Systems
Gas mask and filters
On the surface and in contaminated tunnels you need your mask on. Filters last a few minutes each and are consumed while the mask is worn. Your watch counts down; when time is low, Artyom's breathing gets laboured.
- Loot every corpse on the surface — filters are common drops.
- Take the mask off as soon as you're back in clean air.
- A cracked mask leaks. Swap it at the next mask you find.
- The Air! achievement is for spending 30 minutes' worth of filters, so it comes naturally over a run.
Light, shadow, and detection
When the watch light is on, you're visible. Enemies can hear running and breaking glass. Unscrew lamps, avoid loose debris and bottles, and crouch-walk around guards.
Ammo and economy
Ammo type | Use
Metro-made (dirty) rounds | Everyday shooting
Military-grade rounds (MGR) | Currency; also stronger when fired
Shotgun shells | Close-range weapons
Pneumatic ammo (ball bearings / darts) | Tikhar and Helsing
Spend MGR at station traders on weapon attachments (scopes, suppressors, extended mags), new weapons, and supplies. Swap to MGR only in real emergencies.
Weapons worth knowing
You carry three primary weapons plus throwables. The Veteran achievement is for carrying three primaries that use different ammo.
- Pistol-class: Revolver (big damage, add a long barrel and stock for a pseudo-rifle), Ashot (single/double-shot shotgun sidearm).
- Automatic: Bastard (cheap, jam-prone early gun), Kalash and Kalash 2012 (reliable workhorses), VSV (suppressed and quiet), plus heavier options later.
- Shotguns: Duplet, Shambler, Saiga 12 — excellent against mutants.
- Pneumatic: Tikhar (silent, pump it for pressure) and Helsing (crossbow-like bolts you can recover) — kings of stealth.
- Specialist: Valve (bolt-action rifle), Preved (anti-materiel rifle for heavy targets).
Throwables include throwing knives (silent, reusable if you retrieve them), frag and incendiary grenades, sticky grenades, and claymores.
A strong loadout for most runs is suppressed automatic + shotgun + Helsing or Tikhar, covering stealth, mutants, and humans.
Tools
- Lighter — burns cobwebs (Pyromaniac: burn 50) and lets you read diary pages in the dark.
- Charger — keeps your flashlight and night-vision powered.
- Night-vision goggles — obtained early; essential in unlit human areas.
- Medkits — carry as many as you can; they heal over a short duration, so use them before you're nearly dead.
Stealth Playbook
- Enter an area, pause, and listen. Guard dialogue both tells you patrol routes and can count toward the good ending.
- Unscrew or douse lights along your route.
- Approach from behind and choose knockout instead of kill for mercy play.
- Throwing knives are silent; retrieve them.
- If spotted, break line of sight and wait — alerts cool down.
- Stealth achievements to aim for: Mouse (Echoes undetected by Watchmen), Invisible Savior (Facility without killing or raising an alarm), Commando (rescue the women and children on Bandits without an alarm), Clean Escape (escape the chasing Nazis on Reich without being caught), Rain Man (Bridge without a kill).
How to Get the Good Ending
Metro: Last Light has two endings, decided by hidden moral points you collect across the campaign. In the bad ending, Artyom destroys D6, killing himself, the surviving Rangers, and the Red Line forces. In the good ending, the young Dark One intervenes and the Dark Ones defeat Korbut's army — this is the canonical ending that Metro Exodus continues from (per Wikipedia).
A moral point is usually signalled by a brief white flash and a whispering sound. Actions that generally earn them:
- Listen to conversations, stories, and performances instead of rushing past (Patron of the Arts: watch the whole Theater Show).
- Give to beggars and musicians, and play the instruments you find.
- Show mercy: spare enemies who surrender or put their hands up; knock out rather than kill where the game allows.
- Spare key characters when given a choice not to kill them.
- Help people: free prisoners (Freedom!), rescue captives on Bandits, return the crying child's Teddy Bear (Reunion), save the bear from the Watchmen after the fight (Forest Guardian).
- Explore the Dead City visions (Back to the Past).
Losing points: killing people who surrender, killing where the game clearly invites mercy, and needless slaughter in stealth sections. If you're chasing the good ending, keep a manual save before big choices, and play the mercy route in human areas.
Chapter Outline
The campaign has 30 chapters (per Gamepressure's guide):
# | Chapter | # | Chapter | # | Chapter
1 | Sparta | 11 | Revolution | 21 | Khan
2 | Ashes | 12 | Regina | 22 | The Chase
3 | Pavel | 13 | Bandits | 23 | The Crossing
4 | Reich | 14 | Dark Water | 24 | Bridge
5 | Separation | 15 | Venice | 25 | Depot
6 | Facility | 16 | Sundown | 26 | The Dead City
7 | Torchlight | 17 | Nightfall | 27 | Red Square
8 | Echoes | 18 | Undercity | 28 | The Garden
9 | Bolshoi | 19 | Contagion | 29 | Polis
10 | Korbut | 20 | Quarantine | 30 | D6
Chapter-specific notes:
- Ashes — Not A Rabbit is for finishing it without taking a hit.
- Reich — the Nazi chase is where Clean Escape is earned.
- Separation / Facility — heavy human stealth sections; great places to practise knockouts.
- Bolshoi — station hub. Watch the full Theater Show, spend money, and drink when offered (Cheers! is for drinking at every occasion).
- Regina / Bandits / Venice — this stretch holds many moral opportunities plus the Scram (railcar defence) and Commando achievements.
- The Rhino — a mid-game mutant boss fight (Big Momma achievement); bring shotguns and keep moving.
- The Dead City — find all visions.
- Polis / D6 — final chapters. Stock up; D6's final defence is a long, heavy fight.
Collectibles
- Artyom's Diary Pages: 43 total. Published is for finding them all. Many are in side rooms and on tables you'll miss if you sprint. Use a chapter-by-chapter diary guide if you're completing them; some are in areas you can't return to.
- Safes: Master Thief is for opening 10 locked safes.
- Lights, cobwebs, spiders, traps: Edison (40 lights off without breaking them), Pyromaniac (50 cobwebs), Tortoise (flip 10 spiders belly-up with your flashlight), Ever Vigilant (disarm 10 traps), Engineer (10 lever switches).
- Kill counters: Soldier (100 humans), Antibiotic (100 mutants), Shadow (15 stealth kills), No shooting allowed (10 knife kills in a row).
The Bundled DLC
Redux includes all four original DLC packs (per Wikipedia):
Pack | Content | Achievements
Faction Pack | Missions as a Red Line sniper (Sniper Team), a Fourth Reich soldier (Heavy Squad), and a Polis Ranger (Kshatriya) | Saboteur, Hail Reich!, Kshatriya
Tower Pack | Challenge tower with waves of enemies | Test Complete
Developer Pack | Shooting gallery, combat sandbox (the "Developer" level), museum, and The Spiders' Nest mission | Developer (spend 1 hour), Through the Fire (Spider Lair)
Chronicles Pack | Missions as Khan, Pavel, and Anna with backstory | No Way Out, Heads Up!, The Sunset of Hope
The DLC missions are short and reward practising stealth and gunplay; the Developer sandbox is a good place to test weapons.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Firing MGR casually. It's your wallet.
- Running into human bases guns blazing when you want the good ending or stealth achievements.
- Forgetting to wipe the mask or swapping to a damaged one too late.
- Ignoring the charger until the flashlight is dead in a mutant area.
- Killing surrendering enemies — easy to lose moral points by reflex.
- Skipping hubs. Bolshoi, Venice, and similar stations are where most moral points and stories live.
- Overwriting your only save before a key choice.
Advanced Tips
- Use the Helsing's recoverable bolts to fight nearly for free in long sections.
- Suppressed VSV plus night-vision in darkened bases makes stealth trivial on most difficulties.
- Save throwing knives for lone sentries and always pick them back up; unscrew lights rather than breaking them.
- Fight mutants at choke points with a shotgun; watch for flanking Watchmen packs.
- Shine the flashlight at spiders to make them flip, then finish them — conserves ammo.
- On Ranger Mode, use the Redux "check" actions (look at your watch, check your ammo) since the HUD is minimal.
- Avoid optional surface fights when filters are low; gunfire draws more mutants.
FAQ

How do I know I got a moral point? A brief flash of white light and a whisper-like sound play when you earn one.
How many diary pages are there? 43, per the Published achievement.
Does Redux include the DLC? Yes — Faction, Tower, Developer, and Chronicles packs are all included.
Is the game still getting patches? No gameplay updates in years. The studio's current project is METRO 2039, announced for February 4, 2027.
