Everything you need to get Artyom from Exhibition to the Ostankino tower alive: modes and difficulty, resource management, weapons, stealth, the hidden morality system behind the "Enlightened" ending, collectibles, and PC tips.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final Steam build of Metro 2033 Redux (4A Games, 2014). The next mainline game, METRO 2039, is dated for February 4, 2027. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Pick your play style before difficulty. Redux has two: Spartan (Last Light-style, more ammo and a more action-heavy feel) and Survival (closer to the 2010 original: scarcer ammo and filters, slower reloads, more horror). First-timers who want tension should pick Survival on Normal; if you mainly want the story, Spartan is friendlier.
- Military-grade ammo (MGR) is money. The clean pre-war 5.45 rounds are the currency at station vendors, but you can also load them into your 5.45 guns for much higher damage. Save them for emergencies and bosses; don't fire them by accident.
- Check your watch often. Artyom's wristwatch shows your remaining filter time (and a light that turns on when you're visible to enemies). Filters are finite on the surface.
- Wipe your mask. Condensation, blood, and rain blur the visor. Wiping clears it; a cracked mask means find a replacement fast.
- Carry weapons that use different ammo. 4A's own survival tip: don't run two guns that eat the same ammo type. A 5.45 rifle plus a shotgun plus a pneumatic or revolver is a flexible set.
- Scavenge every corpse and corner. Loot is the difference between a smooth run and a softlock-feeling ammo drought, especially on Survival.
- You don't have to kill everyone. Stealth and non-lethal knockouts are often faster and safer, and sparing people who surrender helps toward the good ending.
- Listen for the flash. A brief white flash plus a whisper means you just earned a hidden moral point. More on this below.
- Running is legitimate. Some mutant encounters are designed to be escaped, not cleared.
Modes and Difficulty
Setting | What it changes | Who it's for
Spartan | More resources, Last Light pacing, stronger feel of Artyom as a trained Ranger | Action-focused players, first playthrough if you dislike scarcity
Survival | Fewer resources, slower reloads, more pressure from the environment | Players who want the original's horror and scarcity
Easy / Normal / Hardcore | Enemy damage and resource tuning | Pick Normal unless you know FPS horror well
Ranger Normal / Ranger Hardcore | Stripped-down HUD, both you and enemies deal much more damage | Second playthrough; very immersive
Achievements are split by mode: Spartan 2033 and Survivor 2033 require finishing the campaign in each style, and "If it's hostile, you kill it." is the Ranger mode completion. You'll need at least two full runs for all of them.
Core Systems
Resources
Resource | Use | Tips
Military-grade 5.45 (MGR) | Currency and high-damage ammo | Hoard early. The Scrooge achievement asks you to hold 1,000 at once.
Dirty 5.45 | Standard assault-rifle ammo | Your workhorse against humans.
12-gauge shells | Shotguns | Best stopping power vs. mutants in close quarters.
Pneumatic ammo (ball bearings / darts) | Tihar and Helsing | Silent. Remember to pump pressure before fights.
Filters | Keep you breathing on the surface and in contaminated tunnels | Swap before you hear heavy breathing, not after.
Medkits | Healing | Health also regenerates slowly out of combat in safe air.
Throwing knives, grenades, claymores, flame grenades | Utility | Throwing knives are silent and retrievable.
The gas mask
- Put it on whenever you see visible fog, hear the Geiger crackle, or head topside.
- The watch dial shows the active filter's remaining time. New filters stack in reserve, so pick up every one.
- The mask takes damage in combat. When it cracks badly, you'll need a new mask (loot them off bodies) or you'll choke.
- Wiping the visor (there's an achievement, Who goes there?, for doing it 20 times) is essential in rain on the surface.
Light, stealth, and the watch
- The watch's LED lights up when you're visible. When it's off, you're hidden.
- Turn your flashlight off when sneaking, and unscrew or shoot out lamps. Humans react to light and noise; mutants mostly to noise and proximity.
- Charge your flashlight/night-vision battery with the hand charger during quiet moments. A dim light is a common reason players get lost.
- Stealth takedowns come in two flavors: knockout (non-lethal) and kill. Knockouts save ammo and noise; for the moral system, the clearly signposted mercy moments (surrendering enemies, story choices) are what matter most, so don't count on knockouts alone.
Trading and customization
At station shops you buy weapons, ammo, and gear, and Redux lets you attach scopes, suppressors, and other mods at vendors (a Last Light system not in the 2010 release). Achievements track this too: Metro Trader (30 deals) and Wheeler-Dealer (exchange 500 MGR at Exchange kiosks).
Weapons: What to Carry
You carry three guns plus throwables. Solid, well-known picks:
Weapon | Ammo | Why use it
Bastard | 5.45 | Early homemade rifle. Unreliable but everywhere; swap out once you can.
Kalash / Kalash 2012 | 5.45 | Reliable automatic rifles; backbone of a human-fighting loadout.
VSV | 5.45 | Suppressed rifle for stealth routes.
Duplet | 12-gauge | Double-barrel. Brutal close up, both barrels at once for emergencies.
Shambler | 12-gauge | Revolving shotgun; great mutant control.
Uboynicheg | 12-gauge | Automatic shotgun, top-tier panic button vs. mutant packs.
Revolver | Revolver ammo | Accurate sidearm; with a long barrel and scope it's a budget sniper.
Tihar | Ball bearings | Silent pneumatic; needs pumping. Excellent stealth headshots.
Helsing | Darts | Silent pneumatic crossbow; darts can be recovered.
Hellbreath | Electric | Special weapon; the Shocking achievement wants 30 kills with it.
A strong all-round setup: Revolver or Tihar + Kalash/VSV + a 12-gauge shotgun. That covers stealth, humans, and mutants on three different ammo pools. Achievement hunters should note Weaponsmith (kill with every weapon) and weapon-class achievements (Cowboy, Gunman, Trigger Happy, Air Bender, Pyro, Ninja).
Enemies
- Nosalises — the common mutant rat-dog things. Shotguns and melee finishers. Aim low, they rush.
- Watchmen — surface pack hunters. Keep your back to a wall, use shotguns.
- Lurkers — small, fast; the Library and tunnels are full of them.
- Demons — flying surface predators. Duck into cover and drop them with sustained rifle fire or MGR. The Inquisitor achievement wants two of them dead.
- Librarians — apes in the Library. The key trick: hold eye contact and don't turn your back; they posture instead of attacking while you stare. When they charge, dump shotgun shells or MGR into them.
- Amoebas — explosive blobs late in the game. Kill them at range.
- Spiders — armored in the dark; light them up with your flashlight to expose weak points, then shoot.
- Humans — Reich (Fascists), Red Line, and bandits. Headshots, stealth, knockouts.
- The Dark Ones — the psychic presence that drives the whole plot.
Walkthrough Outline
The campaign runs roughly in this order (level names as shown in the game):
- Prologue / Hunter / Exhibition — Home station. Learn the systems; the Quick Draw achievement asks you to kill the nosalises in Hunter before they break through the ventilation grilles.
- Chase / Riga — The trip out of Exhibition. Riga is your first real trading station; spend a little, save most MGR.
- Lost Tunnels / Bridge / Market — Tunnel horror and your first taste of bandits. Market is another hub.
- Dead City 1 / Dead City 2 / Dry — First long surface section. Manage filters carefully and search for the Ranger stashes (the Ranger achievement).
- Ghosts / Anomaly — Psychic phenomena; follow the story cues and don't linger in the anomaly.
- Cursed — Hold the station, then blow the tunnel and airlock for Demolitionist.
- Armory / Frontline — Frontline has two opposing achievements: Invisible man (finish without killing anyone) and Hedge-hopper (kill all Red Army and Fascist soldiers). You'll need two visits via chapter select.
- Trolley Combat / Depot / Defence — On Depot, silently kill the first guard and slip into the Fascist station for Raider. Rescue Ranger is saving a group of Reds from Fascist captivity.
- Child / Outpost / Black Station — On Outpost, reach the radio tower and broadcast the commander's message (DJ Artyom). Black Station without killing or knocking out anyone is Merciful.
- Polis — The big safe hub. Restock fully: the rest of the game is harsh.
- Library / Depository / Archives — Surface run to the Great Library. Librarians everywhere; use the eye-contact trick and save shells.
- D6 and the Ostankino tower finale — Military bunker levels, the Biomass-style boss fights, then the climb to the tower and the final choice.
Morality and the Enlightened Ending
Metro 2033 has two endings. The default one ends with the missile strike on the Dark Ones. The alternate Enlightened ending (achievement: Enlightened – "Find the truth.") requires enough hidden moral points earned across the campaign.
How moral points work:
- You earn one when you see a quick white flash and hear a soft whisper. You can lose them with needlessly cruel acts.
- Typical positive actions:
- Stop and listen to conversations, stories, and musicians in stations instead of running past.
- Give ammo/coins to beggars and help people in need (the Generous achievement covers helping the poor, the kid, and the sick).
- Spare surrendering enemies and knock out instead of killing where the game gives you the option.
- Complete optional acts of kindness when an NPC asks for help.
- Explore thoroughly; several points are only found off the main path.
- Harming non-hostile people or shooting surrendering soldiers works against you.
If you have enough points, the final sequence presents the alternate outcome. Because points are invisible, the safe approach is to do every kind act you notice across the whole game. Chapter select lets you replay levels, but the ending is checked against your run, so plan to do this on a single playthrough.
Collectibles and Missables
- Artyom's diary pages — 51 hidden pages; the Blogger achievement asks you to complete all 51. They're easy to miss in side rooms, so explore thoroughly and use a dedicated collectible map on a second run.
- Ranger stashes in Dead City — for the Ranger achievement.
- Locked safe boxes — open 15 for Thief.
- Level-specific feats (Quick Draw, Raider, DJ Artyom, Merciful, Invisible man, Hedge-hopper, Demolitionist) are all missable in the moment but recoverable through chapter select.
- Moral points — effectively missable for the ending unless you replay the whole campaign.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Spending all your MGR at the first shop. You'll want it for Library, D6, and the tower.
- Running two weapons on the same ammo. One dry pool then leaves you with nothing.
- Letting filters run to the last seconds. Change early, especially before a fight on the surface.
- Fighting every mutant wave. Many surface encounters are built to be survived and outrun.
- Turning your back on Librarians. That's what triggers them.
- Ignoring the flashlight battery. A dead light makes Spiders nearly unkillable and navigation miserable.
- Rushing through stations. You'll miss moral points and the atmosphere that makes Metro special.
Advanced Tips
- Headshots with MGR end tough human fights fast. Keep a magazine of MGR in reserve for Demons and bosses.
- Knife and knockout everything on stealth-friendly levels: it conserves ammo, and levels like Frontline and Black Station reward non-lethal play with achievements.
- Pneumatic weapons are free-ish to run: darts are recoverable, and silent kills don't alert the room.
- Shoot out lights before you engage; enemies searching in darkness are easy pickings.
- Ranger mode is the most atmospheric way to replay: no HUD, deadlier gunfights, and your watch becomes essential.
- Throwing knives are silent, recoverable, and one-shot unarmored humans in the head.
PC Notes
- Redux was rebuilt in the Last Light version of the 4A Engine and targets 60 fps; modern PCs run it easily.
- SSAA (supersampling) and Advanced PhysX are the heaviest settings. If performance dips, lower SSAA first.
- The game supports controllers, but mouse and keyboard makes headshots with Tihar and Revolver much easier.
FAQ
Should I play the original Metro 2033 or Redux? Redux. It's the definitive version, rebuilt with Last Light's AI, controls, weapon handling, stealth and customization.
Spartan or Survival? Survival for the horror and scarcity the game is famous for; Spartan if you want smoother action. Both are full campaigns and each has its own completion achievement.
How do I get the good ending? Earn enough hidden moral points (white flash + whisper) by listening, helping, giving, and sparing throughout the whole game. The achievement for it is Enlightened.
What order should I play the Metro games in? Metro 2033, then Metro: Last Light, then Metro Exodus (Metro Awakening is a VR prequel). METRO 2039 is set to launch February 4, 2027.
Does Metro 2033 Redux have missable achievements? Several level-specific ones, but chapter select lets you go back. The main things to plan for are diary pages (51) and the moral points for the Enlightened ending.
How long is the campaign? Roughly a dozen hours for a normal first run; more if you explore for diary pages and stashes.
