Everything you need to survive the original Left 4 Dead: the Survivors and weapons, all five Special Infected, the six campaigns, Versus and Survival tips, Expert advice, and how the game compares to Left 4 Dead 2 in 2026.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the June 29, 2026 Steam update (a spray fix following a June 26 exploit patch). The last content release was The Sacrifice (October 2010). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Game State in 2026
Left 4 Dead (Valve, November 17, 2008) is finished content-wise. Valve still ships small maintenance patches, mostly security fixes: exploit and crash fixes in 2024 and January 2025, a change blocking clients from pausing dedicated servers (August 2025), and a server-crash exploit fix plus a custom spray fix in late June 2026. Official matchmaking and dedicated servers still work, but the population is small, so you'll usually play with friends or on community servers.
Every L4D1 campaign was also ported into Left 4 Dead 2, which has more players, melee weapons and the Workshop. The original is still worth playing for its tighter, darker atmosphere, the simpler weapon pool, and the original Versus balance.
Quick Start
- Stay together. Every Special Infected is designed to punish the player who wanders off. Move as four and wait for stragglers.
- Shove (Mouse2) saves lives. It knocks back Common Infected and knocks a Hunter off a pinned teammate. There are no melee weapons in L4D1, so shove is your only close-range answer besides shooting.
- Leave the Witch alone. If you hear crying, turn off your flashlight (F) and walk around her. Only kill her on purpose, with a plan.
- Don't shoot car alarms. Cars with blinking lights trigger a horde.
- Friendly fire is on. It's light on Easy and brutal on Expert. Never shoot through a teammate.
- Use First Aid Kits wisely. Kits are rare. Pain Pills give temporary health that drains over time. Heal when you're low or black-and-white.
- Always carry a throwable. Pipe Bombs pull the horde away; Molotovs stop Tanks and block corridors.
- Close the saferoom door only when everyone is inside. That ends the map.
Controls (defaults)
Action | Key
Fire / Shove | Mouse1 / Mouse2
Use, pick up, revive, help up | E (hold)
Reload | R
Switch to last weapon | Q
Flashlight | F
Weapon slots | 1 primary, 2 pistols, 3 throwable, 4 First Aid Kit, 5 Pain Pills
Crouch / Walk | Ctrl / Shift
Voice chat | K
Vocalize menu | Z / X / C
Scoreboard | Tab
Crouching improves accuracy. Walking is quieter around the Witch.
The Survivors
Survivor | Background
Bill | Vietnam veteran, the group's grizzled leader
Francis | Biker who "hates" everything
Louis | Office IT worker, the optimist
Zoey | College student and horror-movie fan
All four play identically. Pick whoever you like.
Weapons
L4D1 has a small, clean arsenal.
Weapon | Tier | Notes
Pistol / Dual Pistols | Sidearm | Infinite ammo; pick up a second for dual wield. Always your fallback while incapacitated.
Submachine Gun (Uzi) | Tier 1 | Fast fire, big magazine, weak per bullet
Pump Shotgun | Tier 1 | Great at close range, strong vs Hunters
Assault Rifle (M16) | Tier 2 | Best all-rounder; big mag, good range
Auto Shotgun | Tier 2 | Crowd and Tank shredder at close range
Hunting Rifle | Tier 2 | Accurate, high damage, 15-round mag; for Smokers and long-range picks
Throwables: Pipe Bomb (beeps and pulls the horde before exploding) and Molotov (area fire; good vs Tanks, bad around teammates). Mounted machine guns and miniguns appear at finales. Gas cans and propane tanks can be picked up and shot for explosions or fire. Oxygen tanks explode after a delay.
Healing: First Aid Kit (heals most of your missing health, and can heal teammates) and Pain Pills (instant temporary health that decays). There are no defibrillators or adrenaline shots in L4D1.
Health, Incapacitation and Death
- When your health hits zero you're incapacitated and can only use a pistol. A teammate must hold E to help you up.
- After being helped up twice without healing, the next incap kills you. The screen goes black and white as a warning; heal with a kit to reset it.
- Dead survivors respawn later in a rescue closet (a locked room you open), or at the next saferoom.
- Temporary health (from pills, or from being helped up) drains over time. Don't treat it like real HP.
The Special Infected
Infected | Tell | What it does | Counter
Boomer | Burping, gurgling | Vomits bile on survivors, calling a horde; explodes when killed, splashing bile | Shove it back, then shoot it from a distance so it doesn't splash you
Hunter | Growls, screech when pouncing | Pounces and pins a survivor, clawing them | Shove it off the victim or shoot it; watch for it on high ledges
Smoker | Coughing, green smoke | Tongues a survivor from range and drags them | Shoot the Smoker or the tongue; shove the victim free once close
Tank | Loud music cue, roars | Huge damage, throws rocks and cars | Molotov it, focus fire, spread out and kite; never fight in a narrow room
Witch | Crying, red eyes | Incaps (or kills on Expert) whoever startles her | Avoid; lights off, walk quietly. To kill: point-blank auto/pump shotgun headshots ("crowning")
Common Infected come in hordes. The AI Director controls pacing: it watches how the team is doing and sends hordes, Specials and item spawns to match. No two runs play the same.
Unlike L4D2, there are no Chargers, Jockeys, Spitters or special Common Infected.
Campaigns
Campaign | Maps | Setting | Finale
No Mercy | 5 | City rooftops to Mercy Hospital | Radio for a helicopter on the hospital roof
Crash Course | 2 | Industrial yards after the helicopter crash | Hold out at the truck depot until rescue arrives
Death Toll | 5 | Small town, sewers, church | Hold the boathouse until the boat arrives
Dead Air | 5 | Rooftops and the Metro airport | Hold out on the runway while the escape plane is refueled
Blood Harvest | 5 | Forest, farms and train tracks | Farmhouse defense until the military arrives
The Sacrifice | 3 | Docks and a bridge (prequel to L4D2's The Passing) | Raise the bridge; one survivor must sacrifice themselves
Crash Course (September 2009) and The Sacrifice (October 2010) were free DLC and are included with the game.
Finale Tips
- Stock up before starting the finale. Grab every health item, top off ammo, and choose a spot with a single approach.
- Defend from an elevated, enclosed position — for example the small room on the No Mercy hospital roof, or inside the Blood Harvest farmhouse rather than out in the yard.
- Two Tanks can arrive in finales. Save Molotovs for them.
- Dead Air's runway finale is wide open. Pick a defensible spot near the plane rather than running around the tarmac. (The L4D2 port turns it into a gas-can scavenge finale.)
- The Sacrifice finale requires one player to restart the generator, which kills them. Pick who goes before the last wave.
Game Modes
- Campaign — 1-4 players plus bots.
- Versus — 4v4. Teams alternate between Survivors and Infected on each map. Infected players pick a random Special (Boomer, Hunter, Smoker), and one gets the Tank.
- Survival — hold out as long as possible on a small map against endless waves. Times are measured in minutes and seconds with bronze, silver and gold medals.
Versus Tips
- As Infected, coordinate spawns. A Boomer vomit followed by a Hunter pounce and a Smoker pull is far stronger than trickling in one by one.
- Hunters do more damage the higher they pounce from. Practice long pounces from rooftops.
- As Survivors, stay tight and shove. The Infected team is trying to split you up.
- The Tank gets a frustration meter: if the Tank player doesn't hit anyone for a while, control passes to another player. Keep attacking.
Difficulty Guide
Difficulty | What changes
Easy | Survivors take little damage; friendly fire barely hurts
Normal | Standard
Advanced | Specials hit much harder; friendly fire hurts
Expert | Specials incap fast, a Witch kills instantly, heavy friendly fire damage
On Expert, the team that stays grouped, shoves constantly and never wastes health wins. A single Hunter pounce left alone can end a run.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Running ahead. The Director punishes it with a Hunter or Smoker grab nobody can reach.
- Wasting health kits early. Pills first, then kits once you're low.
- Shooting car alarms. It's the fastest way to lose a teammate.
- Startling the Witch with a flashlight. Turn it off before you get close.
- Molotoving your own teammates. Throw fire where the Tank is going to be, not where your team is standing.
- Forgetting the rescue closet. Dead teammates can come back; find and open the closet.
Advanced Tips
- Crown the Witch with a shotgun: walk up while crouched with the light off and fire into her head point-blank. The Auto Shotgun is the most forgiving.
- Corners are your friend during hordes. Put everyone's back to a wall or in a small room so zombies come from one direction.
- Shove, then shoot. Shoving interrupts Commons and staggers them, buying time to reload.
- Tank control: set it on fire and back away in a line. It'll burn down while you shoot.
- Use pistols while incapacitated to kill the Special holding a teammate. Pistols are infinite.
- Listen for music cues. Each Special has a distinct sound; the Tank has its own music.
Mods and Modern PCs
- The game runs on older Source engine builds and performs fine on modern hardware.
- L4D1 doesn't have the Steam Workshop. Add-ons are installed as .vpk files into the game's addons folder, and custom campaigns are available through community sites.
- If you want the Workshop, more players, and all L4D1 maps plus more, get Left 4 Dead 2 and play The Passing and the ported L4D1 campaigns there.
FAQ
Is Left 4 Dead 1 still worth playing in 2026? Yes for co-op with friends. The public player base is small, so matchmaking can be slow. L4D2 has all the L4D1 campaigns and many more players.
Does Left 4 Dead still get updates? Only small maintenance and security patches, most recently in June 2026.
Is there melee in Left 4 Dead 1? No. Your close-range tools are the shove and shotguns.
How many campaigns are there? Six: No Mercy, Crash Course, Death Toll, Dead Air, Blood Harvest and The Sacrifice.
Can I play solo? Yes. Bots fill the other three slots, but they won't carry throwables or deal with the Witch well.
What's the "Cr0wnd" achievement? Kill a Witch with a single headshot. A point-blank shotgun blast to the head is the standard method.
