Researched September 2026 — current as of the final PC release (no patches in years). The online Contracts mode is offline since 2018; everything else still works.
Status at a Glance

Contracts mode (player-made hits) | Servers shut down in May 2018 (GDPR-related), per Wikipedia
Sniper Challenge (pre-order bonus mode) | Separate product; released on PC in August 2012
Mobile port | Feral Interactive announced iOS/Android versions for autumn 2025
Series successor | HITMAN World of Assassination trilogy (and IOI's 007 First Light)
Quick Start
- Disguises are not invisibility. Anyone wearing the same outfit as you is suspicious of you. A cop disguise fools civilians but not other cops. Choose outfits whose "colleagues" are few in your path.
- Instinct is your stealth meter. Holding Instinct while near suspicious NPCs makes 47 hide his face and "blend," draining the bar. You refill it by doing assassin work: subduing, hiding bodies, finishing objectives, and quiet kills.
- Hide every body. Closets, dumpsters, crates, and some freezers hold bodies. Bodies found raise alarms and cost you points.
- Subdue instead of kill. Non-target kills are heavily penalised. Choke-out subdues cost far less, especially if you hide the body.
- Accidents are best. Environmental "accident" kills (falling lights, fuse boxes, poison) score better than fiber-wire or gunshots.
- Read the challenge list. Each mission has challenges (disguises, kill methods, evidence, hidden items). They unlock techniques and show you the mission's intended secrets.
- Checkpoints must be activated. Most mission sections have checkpoints you physically trigger. Higher difficulties make them scarcer or remove them, so don't rely on them there.
- Point Shooting saves bad situations. In combat, Instinct lets you slow time and tag several enemies, then 47 fires at all of them. It costs a lot of Instinct.
- Start on Normal. Hard, Expert, and Purist remove help and add more enemies; see the difficulty table below.
Controls and Settings
Before your first mission, open Options, Controls and find these actions, because you'll use them constantly: Instinct (hold), sneak toggle, take cover, context interact (subdue, hide body, pick up, change disguise), the weapon/item selector, and aim (which becomes Point Shooting when combined with Instinct). A controller is fully supported and many players prefer it for cover movement. The game also includes a benchmark mode (there's even an achievement, "Take me to the geek," for running it), which is handy for tuning settings on modern hardware.
Core Systems
Disguises and Suspicion
- Each disguise gives access to areas where that outfit belongs.
- NPCs in the same outfit notice you faster; a suspicion marker fills as they look at you.
- Blending in: Holding Instinct near a suspicious NPC makes 47 cover his face or act casual, buying time at the cost of Instinct.
- Blend-in spots (food stands, trash cans, other props) let you "act" as your disguise to wait out patrols.
- Losing your disguise (or being "made") means switching outfits or escaping the area; once combat starts, the alert state persists until you get away.
Instinct Mode
Use | What it does
Vision | Shows NPCs through walls, their patrol lines (paths ahead) and interactive items
Blending | Reduces suspicion when disguised
Point Shooting | Slows time; mark targets and 47 kills them in sequence
On higher difficulties Instinct is less generous and fewer visual aids are shown; Purist strips back almost all HUD help.
Scoring and Ratings
- You start each mission at a baseline and gain points for silent takedowns, hidden bodies, accidents, target kills, and completed challenges.
- You lose points for being spotted, raising alarms, killing non-targets, leaving bodies, and taking hostages.
- The end-of-level ranking compares your score. The coveted Silent Assassin style rating needs a clean run: no one sees you do anything illegal, no non-target kills, no bodies found.
- Scores feed into techniques and unlocks (upgrades such as better Instinct handling and weapon handling) and weapons you can bring to later missions.
Difficulty Levels
Difficulty | Changes
Easy | Most forgiving: generous Instinct and full HUD help
Normal | Baseline experience; recommended first run
Hard | More enemies and less forgiving Instinct
Expert | Harsher still; fewer safety nets
Purist | Minimal HUD and help — for veterans who know every level
Exact enemy counts and checkpoint rules per difficulty vary by mission; the in-game difficulty description lists what each setting removes.
Mission Outline
Absolution has 20 missions, most split into several sections with their own checkpoints and challenges. The story moves from Diana's contract, through Chicago, to the small town of Hope, South Dakota, and back again. Mission names in story order:
- A Personal Contract — the tutorial. Learn subduing, disguises, hiding bodies, and Instinct here; nothing is rushed.
- The King of Chinatown — the first true sandbox: one target in a crowded Chicago square with several accident options. Replay it to learn how Absolution's sandbox levels work.
- Terminus
- Run For Your Life
- Hunter and Hunted
- Rosewood
- Welcome to Hope
- Birdie's Gift
- Shaving Lenny
- End of the Road
- Dexter Industries
- Death Factory
- Fight Night — a scripted brawl driven by button prompts rather than stealth.
- Attack of the Saints — several targets, each with their own accident setups; a favourite for Silent Assassin runs.
- Skurky's Law
- Operation Sledgehammer
- One of a Kind
- Blackwater Park
- Countdown
- Absolution — the finale.
How to approach any mission:
- Sandbox missions (named targets in an open area, such as The King of Chinatown or Attack of the Saints) reward patience: watch the target's route with Instinct, check the challenges for accident setups, and set up one clean kill.
- Traversal missions (escapes and infiltrations such as Run For Your Life) are about getting from A to B. Use cover, crowds, and disguises; don't engage unless forced.
- Evidence and hidden items are scattered through levels and tracked on the Challenges tab. The "Information is Power" achievement needs all evidence.
Achievements Worth Planning For
Achievement | Requirement (from Steam)
Silent Assassin | Achieve Silent Assassin
Whoops | Make a kill look like an accident
Rocksteady | Point shooting with at least 3 kills
Information is Power | Collect all evidence
Jack of All Trades | Collect all 20 play styles
Grand Master | Complete 100 challenges
The Russian Hare | 47 headshots with a sniper rifle
Absolution | Complete the game as a professional
Several achievements refer to Contracts mode (for example "First Contract" and "Competitive Spirit"). With Contracts servers shut down, treat those as unobtainable for new players.
Tools and Weapons
Tool | Best use
Fiber Wire | Silent strangle; drag the body straight into a container
Silverballers | 47's signature pistols; loud unless you're careful with shots
Throwable items (bottles, bricks, knives) | Distract guards or knock out a single target; lethal throws count as kills
Improvised melee items | Quick knockouts or kills when a wire isn't practical
Poison and sabotage objects | Accident kills that preserve your rating
Sniper rifles | Specific missions and challenges; headshots from range
Tip: Many of the best tools are found in the level. If you see a wrench, a fuse box, or a food cart near the target's route, check whether it opens an accident.
Characters You'll Meet
Character | Role
Agent 47 | Protagonist, ICA assassin
Diana Burnwood | 47's former handler; her apparent betrayal starts the story
Victoria | Genetically engineered girl 47 protects
Benjamin Travis | 47's former ICA handler who brands him a traitor
The Saints | Travis's all-female hit squad
Blake Dexter | International arms dealer and main antagonist
Layla Stockton | Dexter's secretary and mistress
Edward Wade | Mercenary leader hired by Dexter
Clive Skurky | Corrupt sheriff of Hope and Dexter ally
Lenny Dexter | Blake's son
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Treating a disguise as a free pass. Walking past five people in the same uniform burns Instinct and blows your cover.
- Leaving bodies in the open. A guard finding one body cascades into full alarms.
- Spending Instinct on vision constantly. Save it for blending and emergencies; use sound and patrol observation instead.
- Skipping checkpoints on long missions. Unless you're playing Purist, activate them before risky moves.
- Killing everyone "just in case". Non-target kills tank your score and ranking.
- Rushing the escape. Many missions track how you exit; walking out calmly is often safer than running.
Advanced Tips
- Scout with the Challenges tab open. Challenges hint at disguises, weapons, and accident kills you might not notice.
- Use thrown items. Bottles and objects distract guards; a thrown item can knock someone out on its own.
- Isolate and subdue. Lure a guard to a secluded spot with noise, then subdue and hide him in a nearby container.
- Accidents in The King of Chinatown. This mission is the best playground for learning Absolution's sandbox options; replay it to learn the methods.
- Point Shooting for "loud-clean". If a fight is unavoidable, a single Point Shooting burst ends it before more reinforcements arrive.
- Purist is replay-only. Only attempt it after completing the game once on a lower difficulty with full knowledge of each level.
