A player's guide to Fallout 4 on PC: SPECIAL and perk planning, early-game priorities, settlements, factions and the point of no return, DLC order, Survival mode, and mod setup after the recent updates.

Researched September 2026. Current as of the Anniversary Edition and the August 18, 2026 PC update. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Version note: Fallout 4 got a free next-gen update on April 25, 2024, and the Anniversary Edition on November 10, 2025, bundling the base game, all six DLCs, and all Creation Club content. Both updates broke script-extender-based mods until those mods were updated. If you mod heavily, check that F4SE and your mods support your exact game version before you update. Bethesda has kept patching since: the May 27, 2026 update fixed Creations menu issues, and the August 18, 2026 update raised the BA2 archive limit from 256 to 1024 for large mod lists.

Quick Start

  • Get the Pip-Boy and power armor in the opening quest. Concord gives you a suit of power armor and a minigun. Park the armor in Sanctuary and use it only for tough fights, since fusion cores are limited early.
  • Pick up Dogmeat at Red Rocket. He's a durable early companion who can't die permanently.
  • Take Local Leader early if you want settlements. It lets you link settlements with supply lines and build stores and workstations.
  • Loot junk. Desk fans, telephones, and hot plates break down into rare crafting components. Aluminum, adhesive, screws, and circuitry are the ones you'll run out of.
  • Tag components you need in the workbench. Tagged items show a magnifying glass icon in the world.
  • Weapon mods matter more than weapon type. A modded pipe rifle with the right receiver beats an unmodded rare gun.
  • Radiation reduces your max health. Use RadAway to clear it and Rad-X to resist it.
  • Save before big decisions. Some faction quests permanently lock out others.
  • VATS slows time instead of pausing it. Use it to target limbs and heads and to spot hidden enemies.

SPECIAL Basics

Stat | Affects | Key perks

Strength | Melee damage, carry weight | Armorer, Blacksmith, Big Leagues, Strong Back

Perception | VATS accuracy | Rifleman, Lockpick, Demolition Expert, Sniper

Endurance | Health, sprinting | Toughness, Lead Belly, Life Giver, Aquaboy/Aquagirl

Charisma | Prices, speech | Local Leader, Cap Collector, Lone Wanderer, Inspirational

Intelligence | XP gain | Gun Nut, Hacker, Science!, Medic, Nuclear Physicist

Agility | Action points, sneaking | Sneak, Gunslinger, Commando, Ninja, Action Boy/Girl

Luck | Critical hits | Bloody Mess, Better Criticals, Idiot Savant, Grim Reaper's Sprint

  • Every level grants one point, spent on either a SPECIAL increase or a perk rank.
  • There is no level cap. Given enough levels you can max everything.
  • Find SPECIAL bobbleheads (one per stat) to add a free point each. Skill magazines give permanent bonuses too.
  • The You're SPECIAL! book in Sanctuary (Shaun's room) gives one extra SPECIAL point.

Build Archetypes

Sneaky Rifleman (strong all-rounder): Perception, Agility, and Luck high. Take Rifleman, Sneak, Ninja, Mister Sandman (night), Better Criticals. Use a suppressed rifle for huge sneak-attack multipliers.

Commando / VATS Gunner: High Agility and Luck. Take Commando, Gun Fu, Grim Reaper's Sprint, Critical Banker. Automatic weapons and VATS criticals chain kills.

Power-Armor Heavy Gunner: Strength and Endurance. Take Heavy Gunner, Armorer (power armor mods), Nuclear Physicist (longer fusion cores), and Science!. A modded Gatling Laser or Minigun with a full X-01 or T-60 suit.

Melee Brawler: Strength and Agility. Take Big Leagues or Iron Fist, Blitz (VATS teleport melee), Rooted. Pair with a Grognak's Axe or Deathclaw Gauntlet.

Charisma Settlement Builder: High Charisma and Intelligence. Take Local Leader, Cap Collector, Science!, Gun Nut. Build water purifiers and sell purified water for caps.

Crafting and Settlements

  • Weapon workbenches need Gun Nut (ballistics), Science! (energy and advanced), Blacksmith (melee), Armorer (armor).
  • Settlements need Food, Water, Beds, Defense, and Power. Happiness rises when those are met.
  • Supply lines (Local Leader rank 1) share workbench resources between settlements.
  • Water purifiers generate purified water in the workbench, a strong early cash source.
  • Minutemen quests ("Another settlement needs your help") repeat endlessly. Accept only what you want, or you'll be pulled around the map.

Main Story and Factions

Your goal is finding your son Shaun. The story leads to four factions:

Faction | Focus | Main contact

Minutemen | Protect the settlers of the Commonwealth | Preston Garvey

Brotherhood of Steel | Military order hunting tech and synths | Elder Maxson, Paladin Danse

Railroad | Free the synths | Desdemona

Institute | Underground science organization | Father

Main quest outline (spoiler-light):

Quest | What happens

Out of Time | Leave Vault 111, reach Sanctuary and Concord

When Freedom Calls | Rescue Preston's group at the Museum of Freedom (power armor and minigun)

Jewel of the Commonwealth | Travel to Diamond City

Unlikely Valentine | Rescue Nick Valentine from Vault 114

Getting a Clue / Reunions | Track down Kellogg

Dangerous Minds | Explore Kellogg's memories with Dr. Amari

The Glowing Sea | Find Virgil in the heavily irradiated Glowing Sea

Hunter/Hunted | Track and kill a Courser for its chip

The Molecular Level | Build the signal interceptor with a faction's help

Institutionalized | Enter the Institute; faction politics take over from here

For the Glowing Sea, bring Rad-X, RadAway, and power armor or a hazmat suit.

Point of no return: the story branches around the quest Mass Fusion. Once you complete key quests past that point, you'll be locked out of or turned against some factions. The Minutemen path is the most inclusive ending and can coexist with the Railroad or Brotherhood for longer. Save before accepting Mass Fusion.

DLC Order and Levels

DLC | Type | Suggested level

Automatron | Robot companions and crafting | Around 15+

Far Harbor | Big story expansion on an island in Maine | Mid-level (roughly 20-30+)

Nuka-World | Raider-focused park expansion | Around 30+ (its questline can conflict with the Minutemen)

Wasteland Workshop, Contraptions Workshop, Vault-Tec Workshop | Settlement building | Any

Automatron starts with a radio distress signal once you reach roughly level 15. Far Harbor starts with a missing-person case at Valentine's Detective Agency after you've recruited Nick Valentine. Nuka-World starts with the Nuka-World Transit Center radio signal. You can go at any level, but it's tuned for about 30.

Survival Mode

  • Saving only at beds, no fast travel, and no compass markers for far locations.
  • Needs: hunger, thirst, fatigue, and illness. Eat cooked food, drink purified water, sleep regularly.
  • Ammo has weight. Carry weight becomes a real limit.
  • Damage goes both ways. You and enemies both hit much harder, so stealth and cover matter.
  • Build a network of settlements with beds as save points.
  • Adrenaline (Survival only) raises your damage as you kill enemies without sleeping.

Anniversary Edition and Creation Club

  • The Anniversary Edition added the full Creation Club catalog. Existing owners can upgrade to it. Check the store page for current pricing.
  • Critics called some of the new Creation Club content redundant with free mods, but it's official and doesn't need F4SE.
  • Creation Club items can appear in the world and disrupt early-game balance. You can ignore many of their starting quests.

PC Mods and Fixes

  • Mod manager: Mod Organizer 2 or Vortex.
  • Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch (UFO4P) fixes a huge number of bugs.
  • F4SE (Fallout 4 Script Extender) is needed by many advanced mods. Match its version to your game version.
  • Downgrade tools: some players roll back to a pre-next-gen build to keep older mods working. Only do this if your mod list needs it.
  • Performance: frame rates above 60 can cause physics issues in Bethesda's engine. A frame cap or a high-FPS fix mod helps on high-refresh monitors.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Wasting fusion cores by walking around in power armor from level 1.
  • Hoarding junk without the Strong Back perk or a settlement to dump it in.
  • Ignoring perk requirements. Gun Nut and Armorer need Intelligence and Strength investment. Plan SPECIAL around them.
  • Siding with a faction too early without a save. You'll miss other quests.
  • Upgrading the wrong gear. Weapon damage comes from receivers and perks, not rarity.
  • Taking every Minutemen quest. They repeat forever.
  • Updating a heavily modded game without checking F4SE compatibility.

Advanced Tips

  • Legendary enemies (starred) drop legendary gear with a random effect. Hunt them in higher-level zones for better base items.
  • Idiot Savant is strong on low-Intelligence builds for bursts of bonus XP.
  • Sneak attack multipliers stack with Ninja. A silenced rifle can one-shot most enemies from stealth.
  • Mix Chems: Psycho, Jet, Buffout, and combos like Psycho Jet are powerful for hard fights.
  • Companion perks: reach max affinity with companions like Cait, Curie, Nick Valentine, and Piper for unique perks.
  • Build a Vault-Tec workshop settlement only if you like building. It isn't required for anything.

FAQ

Is there a level cap in Fallout 4? No practical cap. You can keep leveling indefinitely.

Can I join multiple factions? Yes, up to a point. After Mass Fusion you'll be forced to choose, but the Minutemen can stay allied with most.

Is the Anniversary Edition worth it? It bundles everything, including the Creation Club content. If you already own the Game of the Year Edition, the main gain is the extra Creation Club items.

Why don't my mods work after an update? The next-gen update and Anniversary Edition changed the game executable. Mods relying on F4SE need updating to the matching version.

Best companion? Dogmeat is the easiest early. Nick Valentine and Piper are popular for story commentary. Curie and Cait have useful combat perks.

Can Dogmeat die? No. He's essential in normal play and only gets knocked down.

Do I need to do settlements? Only a few. Sanctuary and the Castle are tied to Minutemen quests. Otherwise, settlement building is optional.
