Everything a new or returning Deadlock player needs: the map and objectives, how souls and items work, laning, macro timings, and where the balance sits after the latest patch.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the 09-16-2026 Update (Deadlock is still an invite-only closed beta on Steam). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • It's 6v6 on three lanes. Destroy the enemy's Guardian, Walker and Base Guardians in a lane, then two Shrines, then the two-phase Patron to win.
  • Souls are everything. They're both your gold and your XP. Last-hit troopers, then shoot the floating soul orb to secure it before the enemy denies it.
  • Item tiers cost 800 / 1,600 / 3,200 / 6,400 souls. You have 9 item slots; 3 extra slots unlock as your team destroys enemy Walkers.
  • Buy components. Higher items consume their lower-tier component and discount the price by that amount, so buying Extra Spirit now is never wasted if you plan to build Improved Spirit.
  • Sell in the shop, not after leaving. Items sold before you leave the shop area are a full refund; afterward you get half.
  • Learn parry. A well-timed parry against a heavy melee stuns the attacker. As of 09-16-2026, parrying also pauses your reload, and parrying during a dash cancels the dash.
  • Play around the clock. Soul Urn at 10:00, Unstable Rift around 11:00, then recurring. Big jungle camps at 8:00.
  • Don't fight alone in someone else's lane. Deaths hand out big bounties and your respawn timer grows as the game goes on (38 seconds at 20 minutes as of this patch).

The Map: The Cursed Apple

Lanes

Three lanes: York (yellow), Broadway (blue) and Park/Greenwich (green). Deadlock went from four lanes to three in February 2025, so older guides mentioning four lanes are out of date.

Each lane has, from outside in:

Structure | Notes

Guardian | First tower. Take it to open the lane

Walker | A giant mech with abilities. Killing Walkers unlocks extra item slots for your team

Base Guardians (pair) | Defend the base entrance

Shrines (2, in base) | Must both die before the Patron is vulnerable

Patron | Final objective; has two phases

Neutral Objectives

Objective | Timing | Reward

Neutral camps | Small at 2:00, medium at 5:00, large at 8:00 | Souls split among allies who dealt damage

Breakables (crates, Golden Statues) | From 3:00; respawn every 3 min | Crates drop souls; Golden Statues give permanent stat bonuses

Sinner's Sacrifice | Vault machines | Must be meleed; about 310 souls team-wide plus statue buffs

Soul Urn | Descends at 10:00, respawns every 5 min | About 250 souls to the team, deliver it to the drop-off

Unstable Rift | First at 11:00 (plus or minus 1 min), then every 7 (plus or minus 1) min | About 1,482 souls (scales up after 13 min) and Rift Troopers

Mid-Boss | Underground sewer | 3,000 souls and a Rejuvenator Crystal that buffs the team

Underground tunnel breakables now respawn every 5 minutes instead of 3 (09-16-2026).

Unstable Rift in Detail

The Rift spawns on a random side lane's bridge as a 20 m capture circle. A team needs 12 seconds alone in the circle to claim it. The winning team also spawns Rift Troopers that get stronger each capture and don't drop souls.

Comeback mechanics: a team that's behind in net worth captures faster (as low as 6 seconds), can spawn extra Rift Troopers, and gets bonus resistances inside 35 m. As of 09-16-2026, the maximum resist bonus scales over time: 10% plus 1% per minute, capped at 40% at 30 minutes.

Getting Around

  • Ziplines run from spawn along each lane, color-coded to match. Ride them back to lane after shopping.
  • Curiosity Shops sit in your base and at points around the map. You can only buy near a shop.
  • Juke Rooms are dead-end hideouts containing Cosmic Veils. Great for breaking chases.

Souls: Your Economy

Source | How it works

Troopers | Drop two orbs: one on the ground and one floating. Shoot the floating orb to secure it; the enemy can shoot it to deny it. Melee trooper kills give souls instantly

Neutrals | Split equally among allies who damaged them

Hero kills | Bounty starts around 200 and scales to about 2,200 by 40 minutes; killing a richer enemy pays extra

Objectives | Team-wide payouts with proximity bonuses

Soul sharing: you share a trooper's souls if you're within 45 m of the orb or 30 m of the hero who killed it. That's why two players in a lane each earn less than one alone.

Souls also level you up, which unlocks and upgrades abilities with ability points. Spend points so your core damage ability or key utility hits its big upgrade tier first.

Net Worth and Comebacks

Deadlock is catch-up friendly, but the 09-16-2026 Update toned it down: the flat bonus souls for being behind were removed and comeback bounties were slightly reduced. Objectives now pay a bit more (Guardian bounty +10%, Walker +5%), while the share given to nearby heroes dropped from 30% to 25%. Taking towers matters more than it did.

Items

Categories

Type | Color | Focus

Weapon | Orange | Gun damage, fire rate, ammo, bullet effects

Vitality | Green | Health, regen, resistances, movement

Spirit | Purple | Spirit Power, cooldowns, ability effects

Buying enough of one category grants investment bonuses (Weapon damage, bonus health, Spirit Power), with a notably large step at 4,800 souls invested.

Slots and Building

  • 9 base slots, plus 3 extra unlocked as enemy Walkers fall (12 max).
  • Late game, sell early tier-1 items to make room for tier-3/4 items.
  • Street Brawl (the 4v4 single-lane mode added in January 2026) has its own item rules, including 9,999-soul Legendary items exclusive to that mode.

Item Notes from the 09-16-2026 Update

Item | Change

Shadow Weave | Now built from Sprint Boots; sprint speed 1.5 to 2; cooldown 45s to 37s. It's now the go-to escape item

Veil Walker | No longer built from Sprint Boots; loses sprint bonus and out-of-combat regen; Spirit Power 10 to 6

Spiritual Overflow | Build-up 35% slower, Spirit Power 40 to 30, fire rate 30% to 25%

Golden Goose Egg | Damage penalty -10% to -15%, souls/min 90 to 80; stored souls now count toward net worth

Mercurial Magnum | Bullet damage scaling and base bullet damage reduced

Trophy Collector | Souls/min 18 to 16

Leech | Lifesteal 25% to 28%

Lifestrike | Melee heal buffed

Focus Lens | Damage 30% to 35%; cast range 20m to 25m

Diviner's Kevlar | Now also grants 10% Ultimate cooldown reduction

Ballistic Enchantment | Duration 14s to 20s

Hollow Point | Bullet Resist Reduction 9% to 10%

Global changes also matter for itemization: movement slows are about 20% weaker, ground dash slows about 10% weaker, and slows now affect air drag at 35% of their value. Stuns pause your reload instead of restarting it.

Heroes

There are 38 playable heroes: Abrams, Apollo, Bebop, Billy, Calico, Celeste, The Doorman, Drifter, Dynamo, Graves, Grey Talon, Haze, Holliday, Infernus, Ivy, Kelvin, Lady Geist, Lash, McGinnis, Mina, Mirage, Mo & Krill, Paige, Paradox, Pocket, Rem, Seven, Shiv, Silver, Sinclair, Venator, Victor, Vindicta, Viscous, Vyper, Warden, Wraith and Yamato.

Good First Heroes

Hero | Why

Abrams | Durable brawler, forgiving, teaches melee and engage timing

Haze | Straightforward gun carry; buffed this patch

Seven | Simple spirit damage and wave clear

Infernus | Sustained damage-over-time, easy to get value

Kelvin | Healer/utility; shows you how team fights flow

McGinnis | Turret-based, strong at holding lanes

Current Meta (09-16-2026)

  • Strong/rising: Apollo and Vyper have been dominant since the 08-12-2026 update. Haze, Holliday and Lady Geist were buffed on 09-16. Silver also gained health per boon and a big sprint speed buff (1.5 to 2.5).
  • Nerfed: Celeste took a second round of nerfs (Dazzling Trick cooldown 34s to 38s, Shining Wonder radius and bounces down, Light Eater lifesteal down). Warden lost bullet damage per boon and Willpower strength. Viscous lost The Cube range (26m to 20m) and Puddle Punch cooldown went up (21s to 24s). Lash is a net nerf (Flog heal down, Grapple buff shorter).
  • Other notable: Venator's Ira Domini now works with Ricochet and can split shot. Vyper's Petrifying Bola cooldown went from 105s to 115s.

Valve has been adjusting the meta roughly monthly since summer 2026, with a bigger update previously reported as pushed back, so recheck before relying on tier lists.

Controls (Default)

Action | Key

Abilities 1-4 | 1, 2, 3, 4

Active items | Z, X, C, V

Melee (tap light / hold heavy) | Q

Parry | F

Dash | Shift (sprint is automatic after about 5 seconds out of combat)

Jump | Space

Crouch / slide | Ctrl

Reload | R

Shop | B

Defaults can shift between beta builds, so confirm in Settings, Keybinds. Rebind freely; many players move actives closer to WASD.

Movement Tech

  • Dash-jump: Dash then jump for a long, fast leap. The core way to cover ground.
  • Slide: Crouch while moving fast to slide and keep momentum.
  • Wall jump: Jump into a wall mid-air to rebound.
  • Melee jump: Heavy melee lunges forward; use it to finish low troopers and heroes and to cover gaps. (The old heavy-melee cancel was removed in an April 2025 update.)
  • Air jump, air dash and mantle: You can jump and dash in the air (both cost stamina) and mantle onto ledges; learn these for chases and escapes.
  • Parry timing: Watch for the heavy melee wind-up. A successful parry stuns; a whiff leaves you open.

Laning Phase

  • Last-hit, then secure. Every floating orb you secure is souls; every one the enemy shoots is lost.
  • Deny. Shoot the enemy's floating orbs when your trooper kills theirs.
  • Watch the trooper wave, not the enemy. Pushing your wave into their Guardian is free chip damage and pressure.
  • Look for the 2:00 small camps during wave downtime.
  • Rotate when your lane is pushed instead of standing in it.
  • Recall and shop when you have an item's worth of souls and the wave is safe.

Macro Rules

  • Take the Guardian when you have a lane advantage; each tower gives bigger bounties after the 09-16 patch.
  • Walkers unlock your team's extra item slots. Prioritize one before 20 minutes if possible.
  • Contest Soul Urns and Rifts with numbers. Rifts are winnable 5v6 only if you have a clear engage.
  • After a team fight win, push objectives immediately. Don't farm jungle while the enemy is dead.
  • Mid-Boss is a late-game fight-winner. Only start it with vision and numbers advantage.
  • Protect your Base Guardians and Shrines when you're behind; comeback Rift bonuses help if you stay alive.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Ignoring floating orbs. Half the value of every trooper is in securing it.
  • Walking to lane. Always use ziplines.
  • Solo-pushing late. Respawn timers get long; one death can lose a Walker.
  • Overbuying tier-1 items. They clog slots. Plan upgrades so components get consumed.
  • Selling outside the shop area. You lose half. Undo purchases in the shop instead.
  • Chasing into Juke Rooms. The target often has a Cosmic Veil and friends nearby.
  • Using old guides. Four-lane layouts and pre-2025 shop items are gone.

Advanced Tips

  • Invest breakpoints matter. Planning toward the 4,800-soul category step can outperform buying one flashy item.
  • Hold escape items for commitment. Shadow Weave is now the premier mobility escape; don't blow it to reposition.
  • Parry pauses reload now. Parrying mid-reload doesn't waste it anymore, so parry freely when a heavy is coming.
  • Stun timing: Stuns pause reload instead of restarting it, so a stun right after you reload is less punishing than it used to be.
  • Weapon heroes: Hollow Point and Weakening Headshot are the standard bullet-resist shred; Weakening Headshot was trimmed to -12%.
  • Spirit heroes: Focus Lens and Diviner's Kevlar both got stronger; Spiritual Overflow is less of an auto-buy.
  • Track Rift spawns. Being on the right bridge when it appears is usually decisive.
