A settlement-builder's guide to Dawn of Man: first-year priorities, food and winter planning, tech progression from the Paleolithic to the Iron Age, defending against raiders, megaliths, scenarios and achievements.

Researched September 2026 — current as of version 1.8.4 (22 October 2025, a Unity security update). The game is complete; Madruga Works is now developing Planetbase 2, its spiritual successor.

Quick Start

  • Play the tutorial first. It's short, it teaches work areas and resource limits, and it earns the Ancient Apprentice achievement.
  • Start with Continental Dawn. It's the most forgiving scenario. The Northlands has harsh winters; Ancient Warriors adds frequent conflict.
  • Winter is the first real test. Before your first winter you need non-perishable food and warm clothing for everyone.
  • Food variety matters. Fish is most abundant in spring, fruit and berries in summer, and animals are easier to find in warm weather. Plan around the seasons.
  • Knowledge points drive research. You earn them over time and through progress, and spend them on the tech tree. Each new era unlocks more techs.
  • Use resource limits. Tell your people how much of each resource to keep, so they don't waste all their time on one thing.
  • Bigger populations bring bigger problems. More people need more food, morale gets harder, and raider attacks become more frequent.
  • Defenses before you need them. Raiders appear as you advance; don't wait until the first raid to build walls and weapons.
  • Save often. Especially before winter and before raids.

Eras

Era | What changes

Paleolithic | Hunting and gathering, basic tools from wood, bone and flint

Mesolithic | More advanced tools and food techniques

Neolithic | Farming and domestication; bigger settlements; mining starts

Copper Age | Metalworking begins

Bronze Age | Stronger tools and weapons; raids get tougher

Iron Age | The final era; steel weapons and the largest settlements

The game spans more than 10,000 years of prehistory. Advancing isn't free: each era increases food demand, morale pressure and raider threat.

Core Systems

Resources

Resource | Source | Used for

Wood | Trees | Buildings, tools, fuel

Flint | Flint deposits | Early tools and weapons

Stone | Rocks | Buildings, megaliths

Ores | Mines (later eras) | Copper, bronze and iron items

Bone and skins | Hunting | Tools, clothing

Meat | Hunting, later livestock | Food (perishable unless processed)

Fish | Water | Food; best in spring

Fruit and berries | Bushes and trees | Food; best in summer

Water | Rivers and lakes | Survival

Crops | Farming (Neolithic onward) | Large-scale food supply

Work areas, limits and workload

  • Work areas let you define where people gather or hunt.
  • Resource limits cap how much of each resource is stockpiled, which frees workers for other tasks.
  • Workload management balances who does what. Watch for bottlenecks like too few people making clothes.
  • Storage filters decide what each storage building holds.
  • Primal Vision is a special view that highlights resources and points of interest. Use it constantly when planning.
  • Direct commands: you can order people to specific tasks RTS-style when the automatic system isn't reacting fast enough.

Food and winter

  • Stock non-perishables before autumn ends. Fresh meat and fruit spoil; processed and stored foods last.
  • Warm clothing for everyone before winter. Skins from hunting are key.
  • Keep water accessible. Settle near a river or lake.
  • Watch morale. Hunger and cold lower it; variety and comfort raise it.

First-Year Build Order

Step | Goal

1 | Place your first homes near water, wood and flint

2 | Set a gathering work area for berries and fruit

3 | Start hunting easy animals (such as deer) for meat, skins and bone

4 | Build storage and set resource limits

5 | Make tools as soon as possible; tools make everything faster

6 | Process meat and fish for winter

7 | Craft warm clothing for all settlers before the first snow

8 | Spend early knowledge points on techs that improve food and tools

Hunting large animals: mammoths, woolly rhinos, ancient bison and megaloceros give huge amounts of meat and materials but can kill hunters. Send groups, not individuals, and avoid cave lions until you're well equipped. Hunting a mammoth earns the Massive Hunter achievement.

Tech Progression Priorities

Specific tech names vary by era, so here's the order of goals:

  • Better tools and food processing in the Paleolithic.
  • Clothing and storage improvements to survive winters easily.
  • Farming and domestication in the Neolithic: crops feed large populations; domesticated animals produce food and resources and provide muscle power.
  • Mining and metallurgy to reach the Copper, Bronze and Iron Ages.
  • Defensive tech (walls, towers, better weapons) before raids escalate.
  • Steelmaking late: steel weapons are the endgame military upgrade.

Defending Against Raiders

  • Raids scale with progress. The further you advance, the more dangerous and frequent raids become.
  • Build fortifications early. Walls and gates funnel attackers.
  • Arm your people. Crafted weapons turn settlers into defenders.
  • Keep the settlement compact. Spread-out buildings are hard to defend.
  • Stockpile before raids. A raid during winter with empty storehouses is deadly.
  • Ancient Warriors is the scenario built around this; its achievements ask you to reach the Bronze Age and unlock Steelmaking there.

Megaliths

Megalithic structures are built from massive stones mined from the environment and moved with sledges. Types include the Menhir, Dolmen, Stone Circle, Statue and Cairn. They add prestige and are the target of the Megalith Madness achievement (all five in one game).

Prestige, Milestones and Challenges

  • Prestige reflects your settlement's achievements. Achievements exist for 900 prestige in the Stone Age and 1000 prestige overall.
  • Milestones: there are 30 milestones across scenarios; completing all of them earns Completion.
  • Challenges: there are 4 challenges, playable in normal and hardcore mode.
  • Hardcore mode makes everything harsher; several achievements are hardcore-only.

Achievement checklist (from the Steam list):

Achievement | Requirement | Tip

Iron Man | Reach the Iron Age | Comes naturally on a long Continental Dawn run

Overpopulation | 200 people in your settlement | Needs farming, domestication and lots of housing

Paleolithic Overpopulation | 100 people while still in the Paleolithic | Delay research; hunt and gather at scale

The Deer Hunter | Hunt 100 deer in one game | Set a hunting work area on a deer-rich map early

Hardened Survivor | 5 milestones in hardcore mode | Do it after you know winter prep cold

Ultimate Completion / Ultimate Challenger | All 30 milestones / all 4 challenges in hardcore | The final completionist goals

Scenarios

Scenario | Focus | Achievement goals

Continental Dawn | Balanced starter map | Reach population 50

The Northlands | Harsh cold climate | Reach population 50

Ancient Warriors | Conflict-heavy | Population 50, Bronze Age, Steelmaking tech

Steam Workshop scenarios are also supported.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Growing too fast. Population outruns food and clothing.
  • Relying only on hunting. Animals move and deplete; diversify food.
  • No warm clothing before winter. People freeze.
  • Ignoring resource limits. Workers stockpile the wrong things.
  • Advancing eras without defenses. Raids hit harder than you expect.
  • Settling far from water. It slows everything.
  • Sending lone hunters after mammoths. They'll die.

Advanced Tips

  • Use Primal Vision to scout flint, ore and animal herds before expanding.
  • Build near multiple biomes so you get fish, fruit and game in one place.
  • Domesticate early in the Neolithic to reduce reliance on hunting.
  • Balance workload by checking what people are actually doing; idle or overloaded jobs show up quickly.
  • Speed-run the tech tree for the Express Evolution achievement (all techs in under 6 hours) once you know the systems.
  • Mines matter: having at least 3 mines at once in the Neolithic earns Ancient Miner.
  • Produce steel swords for defense and for Master of Steel (10 in one game).

Performance and Settings

  • Unity 2022.3 upgrade (1.8.0) improved compatibility with newer systems, added geometry-based grass and terrain shadows in High and Ultra, and added Exclusive fullscreen mode if Borderless causes problems.
  • Black screen at startup: version 1.8.3 addressed this for many players.
  • AZERTY keyboards: version 1.8.1 changed behaviour; remap keys in settings if prompts don't match.
  • Steam Deck: officially Playable since July 2023.
