A full Castle Crashers guide: stats and leveling, combat and magic, items and animal orbs, character unlocks, Insane Mode, the minigames, and what the Painter Boss Paradise DLC adds.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Painter Boss Paradise Patch 3.3 (July 13, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

What's Current (2025–2026)

  • Painter Boss Paradise DLC (August 6, 2025): Adds Paint Junior as a new playable character, custom characters made from a template and shared on the Steam Workshop, refreshed "Fresh" art for official characters and weapons, eight new main menu scenes and new map art. You can turn the DLC's art off from the main menu to play with the original look.
  • Patch 3.1 "The CheekFix" (November 2025): Many fixes, native PS5 DualSense support and Steam Input fixes.
  • Patch 3.2 (June 24, 2026): Mac fixes, including borderless fullscreen. Catfish and Cyclops attack hitboxes returned to their original range. You now keep your previously equipped item when the game auto-uses your last potion.
  • Patch 3.3 (July 13, 2026): A new launch option, -nopausewhenfocuslost, stops the game from pausing when you alt-tab. Add it under Steam → Castle Crashers → Properties → General → Launch Options. It also includes more Fresh art and enemy fixes.

Quick Start

  • Pick any of the four starting knights. Green (poison), Red (lightning), Blue (ice) and Orange (fire) play the same except for their magic.
  • You level each character separately. Characters level up to 99. Plan on sticking with one main for your first run.
  • XP comes from dealing damage. Every hit counts, not just kills, so multi-hit attacks and magic level you faster.
  • Put points into Defense early. Extra health keeps you alive much longer in early boss fights than extra damage does.
  • Revive your friends. In co-op, downed players can be revived. Stand over them and mash.
  • Save coins for the shops. Potions, bombs and weapons are all worth buying.
  • Collect animal orbs. Pets follow you and fight, boost stats or give other perks.
  • Beat the game to unlock Insane Mode. According to Wikipedia, enemies and bosses are ten times stronger there.

Stats

Every level gives you one point to spend on one of the four stats. Each stat maxes out at 25, and weapons and orbs can push past that.

Stat | What it does | Priority

Strength | Melee damage | High for melee builds

Magic | Magic damage and magic moves | High for magic builds

Defense | Health | Early game essential

Agility | Movement speed and arrow damage | Useful for archery and speed

Build suggestions

Build | Plan

Balanced beginner | Put early points into Defense and Strength, then add Magic

Magic mage | Push Magic high. Use your magic projectile and splash attacks to hit crowds

Archer | Pump Agility for arrow damage and speed

Tank | Max Defense first and wear defensive weapons

Stat points cannot be refunded easily, so spend them with a plan.

Combat

Basic moves

Move | Use

Light attack | Fast hits that build combos

Heavy attack | Launches enemies into the air

Jump | Dodge and air attacks

Block | Reduces incoming damage

Magic | Projectiles, splash attacks and magic jumps

Item (bow, bombs, and so on) | Your equipped item

Juggling

  • Launch enemies with a heavy attack, then keep hitting them while they are in the air. This is called juggling.
  • Juggled enemies cannot fight back, and since every hit gives XP, juggling is great for leveling.
  • In co-op, take turns keeping an enemy in the air.

Magic

Each knight's element has its own effect:

Knight | Element | Effect

Green | Poison | Damage over time

Red | Lightning | Chains through groups

Blue | Ice | Freezes enemies

Orange | Fire | Burns enemies

More magic moves unlock as your Magic stat grows. Magic uses mana, which regenerates over time.

Items

You buy items in shops or find them in levels:

Item | Use

Bow | Ranged attacks. Damage scales with Agility

Bombs | Area damage

Potions | Restore health

Shovel | Dig at hidden dig spots in levels for loot (a collectible guide helps find them)

Sandwich | Found in levels. Turns you into a muscular "Beefy" form that hits harder and can open certain doors (per Wikipedia)

Buy the shovel early. Hidden digs across the levels give extra loot.

Animal Orbs

Animal orbs are pets that follow you around. Each has its own effect:

  • Some boost a stat.
  • Some fight enemies.
  • Some help in other ways, like Giraffey, which boosts the XP you earn.

Put on an animal orb that fits your build. Some orbs can be bought in shops, and many are found hidden in levels.

Characters

  • The store page promises more than 25 characters to unlock.
  • Most extra characters unlock by beating the game with different knights, clearing Insane Mode and doing other challenges.
  • DLC characters:
  • Blacksmith Pack: The Blacksmith plus weapons: Spaghetti, Taser, Sparkler, 2x4, Cardboard Tube and Blacksmith Hammer.
  • Pink Knight Pack: The Pink Knight.
  • Painter Boss Paradise: Paint Junior and custom characters through the Workshop.

Custom characters (Painter Boss Paradise)

  • Use the included template to design heads, bodies, weapons, shields, beefy forms, portraits and Back Off Barbarian pieces.
  • Share them on the Steam Workshop or download community characters.
  • You can toggle between official and community characters, or switch the DLC off entirely for the classic look.

Weapons

  • There are 40+ weapons (per the store page), found in levels, bought in shops or unlocked through DLC.
  • Weapons change your stats. Many give bonuses to one stat and penalties to another.
  • Tip: Match your weapon to your build. For example, a Magic build wants a weapon with a Magic bonus.

Game Modes and Minigames

Mode | Description

Campaign | The main adventure. 1–4 players, local or online

Insane Mode | Unlocked after beating the game. Enemies and bosses are much stronger

Arena | Team or free-for-all fights between players

All You Can Quaff | An eating contest minigame

Back Off Barbarian | A board-style minigame where you dodge enemies. Added with the 2015 Barbarian Makeover

First Playthrough Roadmap

  • Early levels: Learn the light-heavy combo rhythm and practice juggling on weak enemies. Put your first points into Defense so bosses do not two-shot you.
  • First boss fights: Bosses telegraph their big attacks. Block or jump out of the way, then punish. If a boss is too hard, replay an earlier level for a few levels' worth of XP.
  • Midgame: By now you have seen several shops. Buy the shovel if you have not yet, stock potions, and try out the weapons you have collected to find one that suits your build.
  • Tougher stretches: Later levels bring more enemy types at once. Magic splash and bombs help control crowds. In co-op, split up so enemies do not gang up on one player.
  • Final stretch: Go in with full potions and your best weapon and orb. If you keep failing, a few more levels make a noticeable difference, since every point in Defense adds health.
  • After the credits: You unlock Insane Mode and new characters. Start a new character to replay with a different element, or keep going with your main in Insane.

Using Painter Boss Paradise

  • Buy the DLC (it needs the base game), then look for the Painter Boss Paradise options on the main menu.
  • Fresh art replaces the look of official characters, weapons and maps. Switch it off any time to go back to the classic art.
  • Workshop characters: Subscribe on the Steam Workshop, then pick them in game. The Behemoth highlighted a community collection called "Found Fortunes Vol. 1" in August 2025.
  • Custom characters can replace official ones, using that character's magic. Several 2025–2026 patches fixed bugs with replacement skins, like splash magic and Arena banners, so keep the game updated if something looks off.
  • Online games show other players' custom characters. Patch 3.1 fixed re-uploaded characters not showing up.

Leveling Tips

  • Hit everything a lot. XP comes from damage, so juggle and use multi-hit attacks.
  • Replay levels you are strong in. Farming levels you can clear quickly is the fastest way to level.
  • Use Giraffey while farming for the XP boost.
  • Bring friends. Co-op is faster and more fun.

Insane Mode Tips

  • Get your character to a high level before you try it.
  • Max out Defense for survivability.
  • Use strong magic to control crowds.
  • Bring potions and use your animal orb well.
  • Revive teammates quickly. Insane Mode is brutal solo.

Co-op and Online

  • Up to 4 players, local or online.
  • Friendly fire only happens in the princess fights at the end of some levels, where you battle your friends for the kiss.
  • If one player is far ahead in level, they can carry the others.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Skipping Defense early on. You will die a lot in boss fights.
  • Spreading stat points evenly with no plan. Focus on your build.
  • Ignoring the shovel. It finds hidden loot.
  • Using weapons with penalties to your main stat.
  • Starting Insane Mode underleveled.
  • Alt-tabbing and pausing the game. Use the -nopausewhenfocuslost launch option from Patch 3.3.

Advanced Tips

  • Juggle for XP. Keep enemies in the air to get more hits and more XP.
  • Magic jump helps you dodge and reach places.
  • Mix elements in co-op. Blue's ice freezes enemies while others deal damage.
  • Collect every animal orb to find the right one for each build.
  • Try custom characters from the Workshop for new looks, after reading their stats.
