This guide covers Battlefield V's multiplayer as it plays today: classes, attrition and revives, fortifications, squad reinforcements, the main modes and maps, weapon picks, settings, and how to rank up fast as a new or returning player.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final content update (Summer 2020); the game is no longer receiving content, but servers remain online and EA announced a switch to its in-house anti-cheat in March 2024. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Status note: DICE announced the end of active development of Battlefield V on April 23, 2020 — the Summer 2020 update was the last content drop. Official servers are still running on PC (EA app and Steam), PlayStation, and Xbox. In March 2024 EA announced it was replacing FairFight with its own anti-cheat (the same move it made with Battlefield 2042). The newer Battlefield 6 launched on October 10, 2025, so BFV's population has shifted toward the core modes; Conquest and Breakthrough are where you will reliably find full servers.
Quick Start
- Play Conquest or Breakthrough first. They have the healthiest populations and teach you the flow of the game. Team Deathmatch and Domination fill well at peak hours; niche modes can be empty.
- Stick with your squad. Any squadmate can revive you (medics are just faster and can revive anyone). Spawning on squadmates and staying close keeps you in the fight.
- Health does not fully regenerate. You only regenerate a limited amount; carry or ask for bandages and medkits. Hold the comm-rose/request key to call for health or ammo.
- Ammo is scarce by design ("attrition"). You spawn with limited reserves. Pick up ammo from supply stations, Support players, and dead enemies' pouches.
- Build fortifications. Every class can build sandbags and barbed wire at marked spots (Support builds faster and can build more). Fortified objectives win games.
- Spend Squad Requisition points. The squad leader calls in reinforcements (supply drops, smoke barrages, artillery, V-1 rocket, and a vehicle like the Sturmtiger or Churchill Crocodile) using points the whole squad earns by playing the objective.
- Level your class and weapons. Class rank unlocks weapons; each weapon has a specialization tree that transforms how it handles. Pick specializations deliberately.
- Pick a combat role. Each class has alternative combat roles (for example Recon's Pathfinder, which leans on spotting and flares) that change your passive traits. Unlock them via class ranks and choose them in the loadout.
- Stop running out in the open. BFV's time-to-kill and time-to-death are short. Move from cover to cover, and use smoke to cross streets.
Core Mechanics
Controls (PC defaults)
Action | Key
Move / sprint | WASD / Left Shift
Crouch / prone | Left Ctrl / Z
Spot (ping enemies/objects) | Q (tap)
Commo rose (requests, orders) | Q (hold)
Throwable | G
Reload | R
Revive / pick up / enter vehicle | E
Scoreboard | Tab
Map | M
Gadget, fortification-tool, and squad call-in bindings differ by class and platform — open Options - Controls once and note them before your first match.
Health, attrition, and revives
- Health bar is split into segments. Passive regeneration only restores part of it; medkits (from Medics or supply stations) and self-heal bandages fill it back up.
- Downed state: when you "die" you are often downed rather than killed. You can call for a revive, drag yourself a short distance, or give up and redeploy. Squad members can revive you; Medics revive anyone, faster.
- Ammo and supplies: you carry little reserve ammo. Supply stations (built at objectives) refill ammo and health. Support players drop ammo pouches; Medics drop health pouches.
Fortifications
Hold the build tool near a blue ghost-outline at objectives to build sandbag walls, barbed wire, tank traps, and supply stations. All classes can build basic cover; Support can build faster and more types, including stationary weapons (anti-tank guns, AA guns, MGs) in some spots. Fortifying is one of the best score-per-minute actions for new players.
Spotting and minimap
Pressing Q marks enemies briefly for your team. Unsuppressed weapon fire shows you on the enemy minimap. Recon's Spotting Scope and Spotting Flare are the main intel tools. Silenced or suppressed weapon specializations keep you off the minimap.
Squad Reinforcements
Your squad earns Requisition points by doing objective play (capturing, defending, healing, resupplying, spotting). The squad leader spends them:
Call-in | Use
Supply Drop | Health and ammo resupply for everyone nearby
Smoke Barrage | Screens a push onto a flag
Artillery Strike | Area denial on a defended objective
V-1 Rocket / Pacific equivalent | Big one-shot strike on a cluster of enemies or fortifications
Heavy vehicle (e.g. Sturmtiger, Churchill Crocodile, or Pacific-theater equivalents) | Late-round breakthrough power
If your squad leader never calls anything in, request it with the commo rose or leave and join a squad that does.
Classes and Roles
Class | Job | Signature gear | Good starter weapons
Assault | Anti-vehicle, frontline pushing | Panzerfaust, PIAT, anti-tank grenades | StG 44, Sturmgewehr 1-5, M1A1 Carbine / Gewehr 43 (semi-auto)
Medic | Healing and reviving anyone | Medical crate, syringe, smoke grenade launcher | MP40, Suomi KP/-31, Thompson, ZK-383, EMP
Support | Ammo, fortifications, suppressive fire | Ammo crate, AP mines, repair tool, Fliegerfaust | Bren Gun, KE7, Lewis Gun, MG42, MG34
Recon | Long-range picks, spotting, spawn beacon | Spotting Scope, Spotting Flare, Tripwire bomb, Spawn Beacon | Kar98k, Krag-Jorgensen, Lee-Enfield No4 Mk I, Ross Rifle Mk III
Tips per class
- Assault: you are the tank counter. Carry two anti-tank tools into vehicle-heavy maps (Panzerstorm, Hamada, Al Sundan). Semi-auto rifles and assault rifles excel at mid range.
- Medic: the most impactful class for winning Breakthrough. SMGs are short-range, so play close cover. Throw smoke before running in to revive.
- Support: keep your ammo crate down near the fight and build everything you can. MMGs (like the MG42) are deadly from prone or mounted on cover.
- Recon: aim for the "sweet spot" — each bolt-action rifle has a distance band where a body shot is a one-hit kill. Spawn beacons behind enemy lines are extremely strong on Breakthrough. Spotting Flares over objectives help your whole team.
Modes
Mode | Players | What it is | Beginner-friendly?
Conquest | 64 | Hold flags to drain enemy tickets | Yes, best all-rounder
Breakthrough | 64 | Attackers push sector by sector; defenders hold | Yes, very objective-focused
Domination / Squad Conquest | Smaller | Infantry-only flag fights | Great for gunplay
Team Deathmatch | Smaller | Pure kills | Good for weapon leveling
Frontlines / Outpost / Rush | Varies | Rotating / niche; may be hard to find full servers | Depends on population
Firestorm | Up to 64 (squads) | Criterion's battle royale; populations are small in 2026 and matchmaking can take long | Only if you find games
Grand Operations | 64 | Multi-day campaign across linked maps and modes | Fun if you find a server; population is thin
Combined Arms | 1–4 co-op | PvE missions vs bots | Good for learning weapons
War Stories | Single-player | Prologue (My Country Calling) plus short campaign chapters: Under No Flag, Nordlys, Tirailleur, The Last Tiger | Yes
Maps: What to Know
Map | Notes
Arras | Open farmland; vehicles and snipers dominate the fields. Fight in the village.
Rotterdam | Dense urban, bridges and trains; great infantry map.
Devastation | Ruined city; chaotic CQB, perfect for SMGs and shotguns.
Twisted Steel | Long bridge in the middle is the key fight.
Hamada / Al Sundan | Desert, long sightlines, lots of armor and planes.
Narvik / Fjell 652 | Snow maps; Fjell has steep verticality around the mountain.
Panzerstorm | Tank-centric; bring AT as Assault.
Aerodrome / Mercury | Airfields and Crete cliffs; air power matters.
Iwo Jima / Pacific Storm / Wake Island / Solomon Islands | Pacific maps with amphibious landings and jungle/beach fighting.
Operation Underground / Provence / Lofoten Islands / Marita | Smaller infantry-focused maps; fast action.
Weapons and Progression
Specialization trees
Every weapon levels up with use and unlocks a tree of four tiers, each with a left/right choice. Examples of typical choices: faster reload vs quick aim, recoil control vs hip-fire accuracy, suppressor vs extra ammo. For most automatic weapons, prioritize recoil reduction and reload/ammo capacity upgrades; for bolt-actions, look at options that extend or reposition the damage sweet spot and improve ADS speed.
Reliable picks (long-standing community favorites; balance has been frozen since 2020)
- Assault: StG 44 (all-rounder), Sturmgewehr 1-5 (fast fire), Ribeyrolles 1918, M2 Carbine and Type 2A on Pacific. Semi-autos like the Gewehr 43 and M1A1 Carbine reward accurate players.
- Medic: Suomi KP/-31 and Type 100 for extreme close range; MP40 and Thompson for stability; ZK-383 for its bipod/ammo flexibility.
- Support: Bren Gun and KE7 are forgiving LMGs; MG42 shreds when set up with a bipod.
- Recon: Kar98k (classic), Krag-Jorgensen (fast rechamber), Lee-Enfield (good sweet spot and capacity).
Currencies and cosmetics
You earn Company Coin by playing, which buys cosmetics and certain items. Battle-pass style "Chapter" rewards ended with live development. There is no pay-to-win power; everything that affects gameplay unlocks by play.
Recommended Settings
- Field of View: 90–105 for most players. Higher helps awareness; lower helps long-range aim.
- Uniform Soldier Aiming: On, so scoped and unscoped sensitivity feel consistent. The coefficient is personal preference; the default (133%) and 0% are the two common choices.
- Future Frame Rendering: Off reduces input lag but can lower FPS; turn it on if your frame rate tanks.
- Motion blur / chromatic aberration / film grain / vignette: Off for clarity.
- Mesh quality / terrain: Keep these at medium or higher if possible so enemies do not render unevenly at distance.
- DirectX: DX11 is generally the more stable choice on modern systems; test DX12 if you have issues.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Sprinting across open fields. You will be spotted and shot. Use trenches, smoke, and the edges of the map.
- Ignoring supplies. Running out of ammo mid-fight is a classic BFV death. Refill at every supply station you pass.
- Solo-squadding. Squad spawns, squad revives, and requisitions are huge advantages.
- Recon players sniping from spawn. You contribute little. Push closer, use the spawn beacon, and spot.
- Never building. Fortifications are free score and win defensive rounds.
- Staying in vehicles that are on fire. Repair early (hold the repair key in tanks), or bail and fight on foot.
- Using default specializations blindly. Some trees force you to choose between strong options; read them.
Advanced Tips
- Revive meta: Medics should toss smoke on a downed teammate first, then revive. Being revived in the open without smoke gets both of you killed.
- Breakthrough flanks: attackers win by taking the less-defended flank objective; defenders win by fortifying and holding angles, not by chasing kills.
- Tank play: angle your hull, stay near friendly infantry, and use the turret-specific upgrade tree (e.g. heavy AP rounds vs HE). Use repair and back off at half health.
- Aircraft: spot targets for ground teams and focus enemy planes first. Bombers need a pilot willing to line up runs on objectives.
- Recon sweet spot: learn the distance band where your bolt-action one-shots. Range-finding with the map and scope overlay makes it consistent.
- Sound: turn on "War Tapes" audio for full dynamic range, or "Night Mode" if you want footsteps and gunfire more even.
- Leveling fast: Breakthrough and Conquest on objective-heavy servers give the most XP per hour; playing Medic or Support with lots of revives/resupplies stacks score quickly.
FAQ
Is Battlefield V still active in 2026? Yes. Content updates stopped in 2020, but official servers remain online and Conquest/Breakthrough still fill regularly, especially at peak times.
Is Battlefield V worth buying? It is frequently discounted heavily (EA's store listed the Standard Edition at $4.99, 90% off, when checked in September 2026). For the price, it offers a large WWII sandbox with many maps.
Does Battlefield V have anti-cheat? Yes. EA replaced FairFight with its own in-house anti-cheat (announced March 2024). Kernel-level anti-cheat can affect Linux/Steam Deck compatibility; check current ProtonDB reports before buying for Linux.
Can I play solo? Yes — War Stories (single-player) and Combined Arms (co-op vs AI, playable solo) both work offline from the matchmaking crowd, though an online connection is still required.
Is Firestorm still playable? The mode is in the menu, but its population is small. Expect long queues or empty lobbies depending on region and time.
Why does my sniper rifle not one-shot? Bolt-action rifles only one-shot to the body inside their "sweet spot" distance band, shown by the scope range indicator. Outside it, aim for the head.
Which is better: Battlefield V or Battlefield 6? They are different eras: BFV is WWII with attrition and fortifications; Battlefield 6 (2025) is modern and actively updated with seasons. Many players keep both.
