A complete guide to playing Shay Patrick Cormac's story on PC: the Templar toolkit (air rifle, stalker detection), naval combat with the Morrigan, the three regions, side activities, Abstergo cheats, and a clean route to every Steam achievement.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the Steam release with Steam Achievements (added 30 January 2025). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Steam achievements are retroactive. All 46 were added on 30 January 2025, and progress you already had counts.
- The PC version runs through Ubisoft Connect. A February 2024 fix addressed a CD key error caused by the language additions; if activation fails, update Ubisoft Connect first.
- The air rifle is your best tool. Sleep darts and berserk ammo solve most stealth problems from a distance.
- Stalkers hide in bushes, crowds and on rooftops. When you hear whispering and your Eagle Vision changes, you are being hunted. Find them first.
- Upgrade the Morrigan early. Hull and weapon upgrades make every naval fight (and the North Atlantic) far safer.
- Capture settlements, forts and gang HQs. They take territory back from your enemies, open up the map around them, and each type has its own achievement.
- Renovations generate money. Invest early and collect regularly.
- Full synchronization is optional and replayable. Do not stress about optional objectives on your first run; you can replay memories.
The Story at a Glance
Set during the French and Indian War (the Animus story spans roughly 1752 to 1760, with an epilogue beyond), you play Shay Patrick Cormac, a young Assassin who breaks with the Brotherhood after a mission for Precursor artifacts ends in catastrophe. Hunted by his former brothers, he joins the Templars. The story has six sequences in the Animus, interleaved with four present-day sections at Abstergo Entertainment.
Key characters include Achilles Davenport (Assassin mentor), Liam O'Brien (Shay's friend), Hope Jensen (New York Assassin), Adéwalé (from Black Flag and Freedom Cry), Louis-Joseph Gaultier de La Vérendrye, and Haytham Kenway on the Templar side, with historical figures such as Benjamin Franklin and George Monro.
Regions
Region | Character
New York City | Dense city; gang HQs, renovations, rooftops and crowds with stalkers
River Valley | Fictional region inspired by the Hudson Valley; rivers the Morrigan can navigate, settlements, forts
North Atlantic | Icy open sea around the Gulf of Saint Lawrence; icebergs, ice sheets, legendary battles, whaling
The Morrigan has a shallower draft than Black Flag's Jackdaw, which is why she can travel inland rivers in the River Valley.
What each region is for in practice:
- New York City is the on-foot hub. Gang HQs and renovations are here, and crowds and rooftops give stalkers plenty of cover, so it is where the air rifle and Eagle Vision matter most. Clearing gangs and buying renovations is the main way you turn the city into income.
- River Valley mixes sailing and land exploration: the Morrigan works its way up narrow rivers between forts, settlements and camps. The tight waterways leave little room to turn, so the forward Puckle gun and rear-dropped burning oil earn their keep here.
- North Atlantic is open, cold water. Icebergs, ice sheets and the legendary battles make it the real naval test, and it is where the cheat achievements Hunt the hunted and I ENDURE ask you to sink 10 ships. Upgrade the hull before you spend much time here.
The story also visits one-off locations outside the three open regions, including Lisbon and, in the epilogue, the Palace of Versailles.
Shay's Toolkit
Air Rifle and Ammo
The air rifle is Shay's take on Black Flag's blowpipe: a silent ranged tool with several ammo types.
- Sleep darts: silently knock enemies out.
- Berserk ammo: turn an enemy against their allies.
- Firecrackers: distract and disorient.
- Grenade launcher attachment (unlocked later in the story): fires grenades with area effects, including sleep and berserk grenades. Achievements reward hitting several enemies with berserk (Instant Vikings) and sleep (Nap Time) grenades.
The rifle also works as a scoped long-range weapon, making it the most flexible tool Shay has.
Eagle Vision and Stalkers
Because you are the one being hunted, Eagle Vision in Rogue helps you spot hidden Assassins. When a stalker is nearby, you will hear whispers and the HUD indicator warns you. Scan bushes, haystacks, benches and rooftops. Counter-killing stalkers earns the Stalker killer achievement, and countering air assassinations counts toward Denied.
Gas Mask
Assassins use smoke and poison gas against you. Shay's mask mitigates gas, and countering 20 smoke bombs with it earns the Do not want achievement.
Melee
Combat is counter-based: block and counter, break defenses on heavies, and chain kills. Carry good armor and upgrade health through crafting and shops to stay safe in brawls.
Naval Combat and the Morrigan
The Morrigan builds on Black Flag's naval system with Rogue-specific twists:
Weapon or feature | Use
Broadside cannons | Main damage dealer
Puckle gun | Rapid-fire forward weapon; good for finishing and weak-spot shots
Burning oil | Dropped behind you to set pursuers ablaze
Mortars | Long-range area fire
Ram and ice breaker | Ram ships and break through ice sheets
Rogue-specific mechanics:
- Reverse boarding: enemy Assassin crews will board you. Defend the deck quickly to save crew (Defence First achievement).
- Icebergs: certain icebergs can be shot apart to create waves that damage smaller ships (Smashing achievement for 100 destroyed).
- Ice sheets: break through with an upgraded ram (Ice Breaker for 500 meters).
- Legendary battles are the toughest naval fights: five Legendary Ships act as hidden boss battles. Complete them all for Master of the North Atlantic, and treat them as late-game content for a heavily upgraded Morrigan.
- Whaling and harpooning: harpooning a narwhal unlocks Unicorn Slayer.
Upgrade priority: hull armor first, then broadside cannons, then the ram, then special weapons. Fully upgrading the Morrigan earns Phantom Queen.
Side Activities
Activity | Why do it
Forts | Take control of the surrounding area; For the Empire!
Outposts | Take one undetected for Ninja
Settlements | Capture for control; I'll take that
Gang HQs (New York) | City control; Capture all Gang HQs
Renovations | Passive income; Property Tycoon
Assassin interceptions | Stop Assassin operations; This war of mine
Supply camps and ship convoys | Resources and money; Camper, What's yours is mine
Native hills and ice caves | Exploration puzzles; King of the Hill
British PoWs | Free them for Freedom Fighter (300 total)
Naval campaign | Send fleet missions; Globe Trotter (17 story missions)
Exploration | Visit every location for Cartographer; clear every activity in one location for Owned
Money, Hunting and Crafting
Rogue uses an economy loop very close to Black Flag's:
- Money comes from renovations, convoys, supply camps, loot and selling goods. Early on, money is the bottleneck for ship and gear upgrades.
- Ship resources come from raiding ships, warehouses and camps, and feed Morrigan upgrades.
- Hunting and fishing provide the animal pelts that Rogue's crafting system consumes to upgrade Shay's equipment. Check the crafting menu before a hunting trip so you know which animals you actually need, rather than skinning everything.
- Selling surplus goods at shops is a quick way to fund the next hull or cannon upgrade.
A good early rhythm: plunder a convoy or two, invest in a renovation, buy the next hull upgrade, repeat. Once renovations are paying out, money stops being a problem. Since Freedom Fighter (300 PoWs), Camper (20 supply camps) and What's yours is mine (20 convoys) all reward the same activities that make money, farming them early does double duty.
Present Day: Abstergo Entertainment
Between sequences you work as an Abstergo employee analyzing Shay's memories:
- Repair computers throughout the office (Repairman).
- Complete Abstergo Challenges (Dedicated Employee needs 35).
- The four present-day sections (Present 1 to 4) each have their own story achievement, so they are unmissable.
- Abstergo cheats such as HUNTED, ENDURANCE and VETERANS can be activated for challenge runs. Several achievements require activating only one specific cheat (Hunt the hunted, Killing machine, I ENDURE, Supplier).
Gear Goals
- Templar Armor (Knight of Yore) and Native Armor (Ancient Hero) are the two notable outfits tied to collectible and exploration chains. Check the in-game progress and collectible menus for exactly what each requires in your save.
- Animus Fragments are scattered across all three regions (Memory collector for all of them).
Achievement Roadmap
The 46 Steam achievements break down like this:
Category | Count | Achievements
Story | 12 | Sequence 1 to 6 and Present 1 to 4 completions, Templar then; Templar now, No page unturned
Map activities | 11 | For the Empire!, I'll take that, Capture all Gang HQs, Property Tycoon, This war of mine, King of the Hill, Freedom Fighter, Camper, Ninja, Cartographer, Owned
Naval | 8 | Defence First, Ice Breaker, Smashing, Unicorn Slayer, Globe Trotter, Master of the North Atlantic, Phantom Queen, What's yours is mine
Combat and tools | 5 | Stalker killer (30 counter-kills), Denied (15 air attacks countered), Do not want, Nap Time, Instant Vikings
Cheats | 4 | Hunt the hunted, I ENDURE, Killing machine, Supplier
Collectibles and gear | 3 | Memory collector, Knight of Yore, Ancient Hero
Abstergo | 2 | Repairman, Dedicated Employee
Completion | 1 | Achieve full synchronization (100% sync in all main missions)
Counters like Stalker killer, Denied, Smashing and Ice Breaker accumulate naturally, so just play aggressively and check progress before the cleanup phase.
- Play the story through Sequence 6 and the final Present section. Story achievements are unmissable.
- As you go, upgrade the Morrigan, capture forts and settlements, and start renovations early for income.
- After the credits, free roam to finish forts, gang HQs, settlements, interceptions, Native hills, ice caves and PoWs.
- Complete the final glitched memory for No page unturned.
- Abstergo cleanup: remaining computers and challenges.
- Cheat achievements last: load a save, enable only the required cheat, and do the task.
- Full synchronization via memory replay, if you want Achieve full synchronization.
Editions and Extra Content
- Templar Legacy Pack: bundles the Officer, Commander, Templar and Explorer packs (released January 2015).
- Collector's Edition missions: The Siege of Fort de Sable and The Armor of Sir Gunn's Quest. Whether these appear in your copy depends on the edition you own; check your Ubisoft Connect library.
- Rogue Remastered (2018 onward) is console and streaming only; there is no separate remastered PC release.
Playing on a Modern PC
- Accounts: the Steam version requires a Ubisoft (Uplay) account, which can be linked to Steam. Ubisoft Connect launches alongside the game.
- Installer problems: a September 2023 update shipped a newer Ubisoft Connect installer to prevent installation issues. If setup stalls, update or reinstall Ubisoft Connect.
- Specs: recommended is a GTX 560 Ti or Radeon HD 6870 with 12 GB of storage, so any current PC runs it easily.
- Tweaks: Steam community guides cover unlocking the frame rate and raising texture quality and draw distance. They edit game files, so back up your saves and config first.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Ignoring stalker warnings. Walking into a crowd while being hunted gives the stalker a free hit.
- Sailing north under-upgraded. North Atlantic ships and legendary battles will sink an early Morrigan.
- Delaying renovations. Income accrues over time, so start early.
- Fighting boarders slowly. Reverse-boarding costs crew with every second.
- Hoarding sleep and berserk darts. Ammo can be restocked at shops; use it.
- Enabling multiple cheats for cheat achievements. They require only the named cheat active.
Advanced Tips
- Berserk a heavy in a group and let him thin the crowd before you engage.
- Snipe from rooftops in New York with the rifle, then drop down for air assassinations.
- Use burning oil when being chased by multiple ships; it punishes pursuers.
- Destroy icebergs next to enemy ships to use the waves as free damage.
- Harvest convoys for early money and resources rather than grinding shops.
- Use fast travel to minimize backtracking during cleanup, and clear one location completely before moving on so you also pick up Owned.
- Stack grenade achievements in crowds. Nap Time and Instant Vikings need 5 enemies hit by one grenade, so wait for a patrol to bunch up or fight near a guarded chokepoint.
