A practical path from one ship to a self-running empire in X4: Foundations: early money, automating trade and mining, station building, fleet command and combat, and what the 9.00 "Empire Update" changed.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the free 9.00 "Empire Update" (released June 10, 2026). Egosoft has announced that the next major update after 9.00 will require Vulkan 1.4 GPUs. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Pick a start that matches what you want to do. X4 offers several scripted starts (combat, trading and building flavors) plus a custom start. Your first hours differ a lot between them.
- Do the tutorials. X4's interface is dense; the in-game tutorials for flight, map, trading and station building save hours of confusion.
- The map is the game. Almost everything (orders, trade, building, fleets) happens on the map screen. Learn right-click context orders early.
- Scale up by hiring. Your personal piloting makes money slowly; ships flown by hired pilots running automated orders make money while you do something else.
- Your first big goal is a mining or trade ship on automation. Once a few are running, money compounds.
- Stations are the real money. A station producing wares that the local economy wants is how empires fund fleets.
- Reputation matters. Faction standing unlocks licences, blueprints, ships and docking. Pick friends early and don't shoot the wrong ships.
- Save often, in multiple slots. It's a big sim; mistakes and surprises happen.
- Use time acceleration when travelling or waiting, and travel mode for long flights.
- The universe runs without you. Factions build, trade and fight on their own. Use that: sell to their shortages and avoid their wars until you're ready.
Controls to Learn First
Look these up under Settings, Controls on your first launch (defaults can differ between versions and control schemes, so check your own bindings rather than trusting an old video):
Action | Why it matters
Open the map | Where you give orders, trade, build and manage fleets
Travel mode | Fast cruise for long flights inside a sector
Scan mode | Scanning stations and signal leaks for data and missions
Long range scan | Finding hidden data vaults, wrecks and resources
Docking computer | Auto-docks your ship once you're close to a free pad
Time acceleration (SETA) | Skips waiting on long trips
Controllers, HOTAS and mouse-steering are all supported; rebind anything you use often.
Ships and Classes
Size | Examples of roles | Notes
S | Fighters, scouts, small miners and couriers | Cheap, fast; your first ships
M | Corvettes, frigates, gunboats, medium traders and miners | The early workhorses for automation
L | Destroyers, large freighters and miners, construction ships | Need a capital shipyard; big investment
XL | Carriers, builders, resupply ships, battleships | Late-game fleet backbones
Pilot and crew skill (shown as stars) affects how well automated ships perform. Hire better pilots for your moneymakers; train them over time.
Making Money: Early to Late
Early game (your first few million)
- Missions from stations and faction representatives pay credits and reputation.
- Salvage: abandoned ships and lockboxes are scattered around. Claim ships (bring spacesuit or boarding) and sell or use them.
- Scanning: scan stations for data and to reveal them on your map, which helps trading.
- Manual trading: buy low at one station, sell high at another. Slow but teaches the economy.
Mid game (automation)
- Automated mining: an M miner (solid or liquid) with a competent pilot doing auto-mine is reliable income. The 9.00 update reworked resource distribution with dynamic mining regions, so check your region's yields on the map.
- Automated trading: traders on auto-trade find routes themselves; pilot skill determines range.
- Station traders: assign ships to a station to feed its inputs and sell its outputs.
Late game (stations and empire)
- Build stations that fill economic gaps, such as energy, refined goods and ship components that factions are short of.
- Supply shipyards and wharfs with components; they're always hungry.
- Military contracts: fleets can earn through missions and war.
Station Building
- Buy blueprints for the modules you want from faction representatives. Reputation gates what they'll sell you.
- Buy a plot in a sector (needs a licence from the owning faction, or build in unclaimed space).
- Design the station in the station planner: production modules, storage, docks and habitats.
- Hire a builder. A construction ship builds modules; you pay or supply the materials.
- Assign a manager and set trade rules so the station buys inputs and sells outputs automatically.
- Add station traders and miners to keep it running without faction traders.
Rules of thumb:
- Start with a simple chain that uses cheap inputs, such as energy cells from solar power.
- Watch the map's trade offers to find what's in demand nearby.
- Storage and docking capacity are common bottlenecks.
- The 9.00 update added a Ship Showroom station module for displaying S and M ships.
Combat and Fleets
Flying yourself
- Match weapons to targets: fast-firing weapons for fighters, heavier weapons for large ships.
- Target subsystems on big ships (engines, turrets, shield generators) to disable them.
- Shields regenerate; break off, recover, and re-engage.
Commanding fleets
- Set a commander and assign subordinates to defend, attack or intercept.
- Priority Orders (9.00): RTS-style orders that override existing order queues. On the map, Shift + Right Click issues and queues orders, while Ctrl + Right Click sends a Priority Order. Use them to react quickly in battle.
- Turret behavior on capital ships can be set to target specific classes.
- Resupply: keep resupply ships or nearby wharfs for ammo, drones and repairs.
What 9.00 changed in combat
- Full rebalance of hundreds of weapons, turrets, shields and ships; the largest combat balance update in X4's history.
- Turrets are more accurate, AI pilots behave more organically, and capital ship movement was reworked.
- S and M ships have integrated engines and shields, and hardpoints were reworked to allow more cross-faction equipment compatibility.
- A Travel Drive Stability system was added.
If you're returning from an older version, re-evaluate your loadouts; old "best" builds may not hold.
The 9.00 Empire Update at a Glance
Area | Change
Combat | Sweeping rebalance, turret accuracy, AI pilots, capital ship movement
Economy | Recycling S and M Kha'ak wrecks produces Allographyne, a versatile ware for ship and equipment production (its production needs Nividium); dynamic mining regions where resources are localized and can reappear elsewhere once depleted
Command | Priority Orders for RTS-style instant commands
Ships | Integrated engines and shields on S and M ships; limited blueprints for unique ships
Stations | Ship Showroom module
UI | Refreshed visual style, better map menus and readability
Tech | AMD FSR frame generation support
Factions and DLC
The base game includes the Argon, Antigone, Teladi and Paranid factions and the hostile Xenon and Kha'ak. Paid expansions add more regions, factions and storylines:
DLC | Adds
Split Vendetta | The Split factions and their region
Cradle of Humanity | The Terrans and the Sol region, plus terraforming projects
Tides of Avarice | Pirate-focused content and salvaging
Kingdom End | The Boron
Timelines | A collection of scenario-based challenges
Hyperion Pack | A unique explorer ship package
You don't need any DLC to enjoy the core game, but Split Vendetta and Cradle of Humanity add the most to the main sandbox.
Hardware Notice
Egosoft announced that after 9.00, the next major update moves the engine to Vulkan 1.4 exclusively, raising the minimum GPU to an NVIDIA GTX 1060 or AMD RX 5300 (or equivalent, with Vulkan 1.4 support). Check your GPU before that update lands.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Trying to earn everything by flying yourself. Hire pilots and automate early.
- Buying an expensive ship before you have income. A miner or trader first, then combat ships.
- Ignoring pilot skill. One-star pilots on auto-trade barely leave the sector.
- Building stations with no market. Check local demand first.
- Forgetting habitat and storage modules. Workforce and storage limit production.
- Angering a faction by accident. Friendly fire and illegal cargo hurt reputation. Check before firing.
- Parking fleets near the Xenon. They'll come.
Advanced Tips
- Claim abandoned ships early. They're free capital to sell or use.
- Feed shipyards. Components like hull parts and engine parts are always in demand.
- Use the logical station overview to find bottlenecks in production chains.
- Train pilots by giving them work; skill grows over time.
- Use Priority Orders in fleet fights to override queued orders when a situation changes.
- Recycle Kha'ak wrecks (9.00) for Allographyne; it gives an alternative resource stream, and its Nividium requirement opens new trade routes.
- Rebuild unique ships. 9.00 added limited blueprints for certain unique ships so they can be rebuilt if lost.
- Play the long game with factions. Supporting one side in a war can open blueprints, licences and sectors.
- Explore mods once you know the vanilla game; X4 has a large modding community.
FAQ
Is X4: Foundations good in 2026? Yes. It's still actively developed; the 9.00 Empire Update in June 2026 was one of its largest free updates, reworking combat balance, commands and the economy.
What's the fastest early money? Salvaging abandoned ships, doing missions, and then automating a mining or trading ship with a decent pilot.
Do I need the DLC? No. The base game is complete. DLC adds regions, factions and stories.
How do I build a station? Buy blueprints and a plot, design it in the station planner, hire a builder, fund materials, then assign a manager and traders.
Will my PC still run X4 after the next update? If your GPU supports Vulkan 1.4 (roughly GTX 1060 or RX 5300 and newer), yes. Egosoft has said the change affects a small share of players.
Does X4 have multiplayer? No, it's a single-player sandbox.
