A 2026 guide to the original Division: leveling Manhattan, the Base of Operations and skills, stats and gear, the World Tier endgame, gear sets and Exotics, the Dark Zone, Underground, Survival, Last Stand, and the monthly Global Events.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 1.8.3 (the final content patch) and the 2026 Global Events calendar. Online-only; servers are live. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Game State in 2026

The Division (Massive Entertainment / Ubisoft, March 7, 2016) is in maintenance mode but still fully online. Development ended with Update 1.8.3 in late 2018. Ubisoft still runs the servers, rotates a Global Event every month, and added Steam achievements in February 2025 (they sync retroactively from Ubisoft Connect the first time you launch).

What else is happening in the series:

  • The Division 2 is the actively updated game.
  • The Division Resurgence, a free-to-play spin-off, launched on mobile on March 31, 2026 and on Steam on August 5, 2026, with cross-play and cross-progression.

The game needs a persistent connection and a Ubisoft account. Matchmaking still works, but the Dark Zone and Last Stand are much quieter than they used to be.

Quick Start

  • Follow the main missions to unlock the Base of Operations wings. Every wing upgrade unlocks skills, talents and perks. It's the core of your build.
  • Cover is life. Hold Space (default) to snap into cover, and move cover to cover instead of standing in the open. Most enemies flank.
  • Level to 30 before worrying about gear. Everything you find while leveling gets replaced at the cap.
  • Pick one damage skill and one survival skill. First Aid plus Pulse or Turret carries most of the campaign.
  • Kill the elites first — the purple and yellow health bars. Rushers (melee) and Engineers (turrets and drones) punish you the most.
  • Break down gear you don't need into crafting materials. Keep Division Tech.
  • Matchmake for missions. Harder missions are much easier in a group of four, and the game scales them.
  • Don't enter the Dark Zone below its bracket. It's PvPvE; other players can turn rogue and kill you.
  • Check the active Global Event. It's the easiest way to farm Classified gear sets.

Controls (PC defaults)

Action | Key

Cover / move between cover | Space (hold to move to marked cover)

Leveling and the Campaign

Manhattan is split into districts with recommended levels. Each district has main missions, side missions, and encounters. Main missions and encounters reward Supplies for the three wings of the Base of Operations:

Wing | Upgrades unlock

Medical | Healing skills (First Aid, Support Station, Recovery Link) and survival talents

Tech | Pulse, Turret, Sticky Bomb, Seeker Mine, Tactical Link

Security | Ballistic Shield, Smart Cover, Mobile Cover, Survivor Link

Each skill also has mods that change its behavior (for example the healing or damage-boosting mods on First Aid, or the Scrambler and Tactical Scanner mods on Pulse). Unlock them through wing upgrades.

Signature skills have long cooldowns and huge impact:

  • Recovery Link (Medical) — revives and heals the group.
  • Tactical Link (Tech) — boosts group damage and critical hits.
  • Survivor Link (Security) — big damage reduction and speed, great for escapes.

Leveling Tips

  • Do the main story missions in order. They unlock the most wing upgrades.
  • Encounters (Supply Drops, Hostage Rescues, Take Back Control points) are quick XP and Supplies.
  • Collectibles (phone recordings, ECHOs, survival guide pages, incident reports) are fun lore but optional.
  • Grab everything with a purple or better rarity at the end of leveling; that's what you'll use to start World Tier 1.

Stats and Gear

Core Attributes

Attribute | Affects

Firearms | Weapon damage

Stamina | Health

Electronics | Skill Power (skill damage, healing and duration)

Builds usually push one attribute hard and keep enough Stamina to survive.

Gear Slots

Body Armor, Mask, Knee Pads, Backpack, Gloves, Holster, plus two primary weapons and a sidearm. Each item rolls stats, major/minor attributes, and gear talents. Weapons have their own talents that activate when you meet an attribute threshold.

Gear Rarity

  • High-End (yellow) — strong individual pieces.
  • Gear Set (green) — bonuses at 2, 3, 4 and 6 pieces. The 6-piece bonus comes from Classified versions of the set.
  • Exotic (red/orange) — unique weapons and armor, e.g. the Hungry Hog, Big Alejandro, Midas, Liberator, Tenebrae, Showstopper, Pakhan, Medved, Barrett's Bulletproof Vest and NinjaBike Messenger Bag.

Recalibration and Optimization

  • Recalibration at the Base lets you reroll one stat, attribute or talent on an item. Once you reroll a slot, only that slot can be rerolled on that item.
  • Optimization raises an item's stats toward its maximum using Division Tech and credits.

Endgame: World Tiers

At level 30, you pick a World Tier from the Base of Operations or the Terminal. Higher tiers raise enemy strength and the gear score of your drops. World Tier 5 is the highest. Move up once your gear catches up to your current tier's drops.

What to Farm

Activity | Why

Legendary missions | Hard, reworked story missions with good drop chances

Incursions (Falcon Lost, Clear Sky, Dragon's Nest, Stolen Signal) | Group content with set and Exotic drops

Underground | Procedural tunnel missions with Directives for extra challenge

Survival | Session-based survival mode with its own rewards

Last Stand (DLC) | 8v8 PvP objective mode in the Dark Zone; queues are slow in 2026

Resistance (1.8) | Wave-defense mode added alongside the West Side Pier area

Global Events | Monthly week-long events with Classified gear sets

Weekly Assignments | An Exotic Cache each per week (Weekly, Underground and Survival assignments)

The Dark Zone | PvPvE with the best loot and the most risk

Gear sets you'll see in event rotations include Striker's Battlegear, Sentry's Call, Reclaimer, D3-FNC, Predator's Mark, Banshee's Shadow, Path of the Nomad, DeadEye, Tactician's Authority, FireCrest, LoneStar, Final Measure, Alpha Bridge and Hunter's Faith. A few classic combinations:

  • Striker's — damage builds up with every hit. Easy to use and a staple for PvE DPS.
  • Sentry's Call — marks enemies for bonus damage on repeated hits; strong with marksman rifles.
  • Reclaimer — support set that shares buffs with the Support Station.
  • Tactician's Authority — skill-power set; builds around turrets and seeker mines.
  • D3-FNC — shield (Ballistic Shield) tank set.
  • Alpha Bridge — shares weapon talents between your two primaries; strong in PvP.

Global Events: 2026 Schedule

Global Events run for a week each month from 08:00 UTC Monday to 08:00 UTC the following Monday. Each event applies a modifier to the whole game (for example, Strike, Assault, Blackout, Ambush, Onslaught, Outbreak) and drops Classified gear sets from event caches.

Event | Dates (2026, 08:00 UTC) | Classified sets

Onslaught | Sep 28 – Oct 5 | FireCrest, LoneStar, Predator's Mark, Reclaimer

Outbreak | Oct 26 – Nov 2 | DeadEye, LoneStar, Final Measure

Ambush | Nov 23 – Nov 30 | Alpha Bridge, FireCrest, Hunter's Faith, Tactician's Authority

Assault | Dec 21 – Dec 28 | Sentry's Call, Striker's, Reclaimer

(Earlier in 2026: Assault in July, Strike in August, Blackout from August 31 to September 7.)

Earn Global Event Credits during the event, spend them at the event vendor, and open event caches for the Classified pieces.

The Dark Zone

The Dark Zone is the walled-off quarantine zone in the middle of Manhattan. It has its own level, currency (Dark Zone Funds), vendors and loot.

  • Contaminated loot must be extracted by helicopter. Call an extraction, defend it, and attach your bag to the rope.
  • Going Rogue: shooting other players marks you as Rogue. Rogues are visible on everyone's map and can be hunted for bounties. Killing a Rogue is safe.
  • Landmarks have named enemies with better loot.
  • Dark Zone chests need Dark Zone keys; supply drops are contested by everyone nearby.

Dark Zone Tips

  • Bring friends. Solo play in the DZ is risky, even with fewer people around now.
  • Extract often. Dying drops your contaminated loot.
  • If a group is waiting at an extraction, stay out of their line of fire until the helicopter lands.

Skirmish and PvP

Update 1.8 added Skirmish, a 4v4 team PvP mode. Expect long matchmaking queues in 2026; organizing matches through community Discords or with friends works better.

Division Shields

Division Shields are cross-game commendations in the Dossier. Completing their challenges unlocked rewards in The Division 2. The Marshal Shield (released January 2019), for example, requires collecting every Exotic item in the game.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Standing up in cover. Enemies have flanking AI; move cover to cover.
  • Recalibrating without planning. You lock that slot for good.
  • Jumping World Tiers too early. You'll die a lot and not gain much.
  • Ignoring Stamina. Glass-cannon builds fall apart in Legendary missions.
  • Carrying loot too long in the Dark Zone. Extract before you get jumped.
  • Skipping weekly assignments. They're a free Exotic Cache per character.

Advanced Tips

  • Build around one damage source. Weapon damage (Firearms, Striker's) or Skill Power (Electronics, Tactician's) — don't split.
  • Seeker Mine and Turret builds are strong for solo players. Let skills do the work while you stay in cover.
  • Use Pulse constantly. Marking enemies helps your team and some talents boost damage against pulsed targets.
  • Headshots matter. Many enemies have weak spots (armor plates, gas tanks on Cleaners' backpacks). Shooting a Cleaner's tank makes it explode.
  • Keep a PvP loadout and a PvE loadout. Use the loadout system so you can swap in seconds.
  • Farm events with a group. Some Global Event modifiers can be harsh solo, so read the active modifiers before you queue.

FAQ

Are The Division 1 servers still online in 2026? Yes. Ubisoft still runs the servers and publishes a Global Events calendar (July-December 2026 was posted in June 2026).

Is The Division 1 still worth playing? Yes, especially for the campaign and the Manhattan atmosphere. For an active endgame and larger player base, The Division 2 is the better pick.

What's the max level? Level 30. Progression after that comes from World Tiers and gear score.

Do I need the DLC? Underground, Survival and Last Stand came in the Season Pass and are sold in the Gold Edition. The base game is complete without them, but Underground and Survival add a lot of endgame variety.

Is there cross-play or cross-save? No, not for The Division 1. The Division Resurgence has cross-play and cross-progression between mobile and PC.

How do I get Classified gear? From Global Event caches during events, plus certain endgame activities (Legendary missions, Incursions, the Dark Zone).
