A practical Rust guide for fresh spawns and returning players: surviving the first hour, building a base that doesn't get offlined, progressing through workbenches, running monuments, and what the 2026 monthly updates changed.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the "Breach and Clear" monthly update (September 3, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Pick the right server. Low-pop or "weekly/biweekly wipe" community servers are gentler than full official servers. Check wipe day before you join.
- Hit nodes and barrels, not players. Stone and metal ore nodes plus roadside barrels (scrap, components) fuel everything early.
- Craft a Stone Hatchet and Stone Pickaxe first, then a bow and a spear. A Hunting Bow wins most fights against other fresh spawns.
- Build a small base in your first 30–45 minutes. A 1x1 or 2x1 with a Tool Cupboard (TC), a door with a lock, and a sleeping bag is the goal.
- Upgrade to stone immediately. Twig and wood fall to anyone with a hatchet or a few Molotovs.
- Recycle for scrap. Scrap unlocks blueprints on the Tech Tree and buys items at Outpost and Bandit Camp.
- Don't carry what you can't lose. Bank loot at base often ("run it home").
- Get a Workbench Level 1 early, then aim for Level 2. Gear quality jumps at each tier.
- Know the wipe schedule. Official servers force wipe on the first Thursday of each month with the monthly update.

Early Game: First Hour
Gathering
- Rocks (starting item) harvest wood and stone slowly. Craft a Stone Hatchet and Stone Pickaxe as soon as possible.
- Hit the sparkle (the "X" marker) on nodes and trees for bonus yield.
- Hemp plants give cloth: needed for sleeping bags, bows, and bandages.
- Barrels along roads give scrap and components — the main early scrap source.
- HQM nodes (new in September 2026) are extremely scarce but can appear across the island, especially in the Jungle.
First base
- Place a foundation and walls with the Building Plan (twig).
- Place a Tool Cupboard (TC) inside — it gives you building privilege and prevents decay while stocked.
- Add a door with a Key Lock or Code Lock. Code locks are safer.
- Upgrade everything to stone with the Hammer.
- Put a sleeping bag inside, then a Furnace and a small box.
Early weapons progression
Stage | Weapons
Fresh spawn | Rock, Spear, Hunting Bow
Early | Crossbow, Revolver, Double Barrel Shotgun, Waterpipe Shotgun
Mid | Semi-Automatic Rifle, Python Revolver, Thompson, Custom SMG, Pump Shotgun
Late (mostly Workbench 3) | Assault Rifle (AK), LR-300, Bolt Action Rifle, MP5A4, M249
Armor: Start with Burlap or Hide, move to Road Sign kit, then Metal Facemask + Metal Chest Plate for PvP (Heavy Plate for raids/defense).
September 2026 balance notes: grenade stack sizes were cut (F1, Bee, Molotov, and Flashbang to 3; Beancans to 4), Homing Launcher lock-on time was reduced, Semi-Automatic Pistol damage falloff increased, SMG bodies became more common and rifle bodies slightly less common, and the Large Medkit now removes radiation.
Base Building
Building tiers
Tier | Cost | Notes
Twig | Wood (cheap) | Placeholder only; breaks instantly
Wood | Wood | Early, vulnerable to fire and melee
Stone | Stone | Standard base material; upgrade here ASAP
Sheet Metal | Metal Fragments | Solid mid-wipe
Armored | High Quality Metal | Best protection, expensive upkeep
Upkeep and the Tool Cupboard
- Fill your TC with the materials your base is built from. When it runs dry, the base decays.
- Group scaling (new in Breach and Clear): upkeep now rises with the number of players authorized on the TC:
Authorized players | Upkeep tax
1–4 | No tax
5–10 | +2% per player beyond 4 (up to +12%)
11+ | +4% per additional player
Maximum | +300%
Examples: 6 players = +4%, 12 players = +20%. Big clans now pay much more to hold compounds.
- High external walls carry a 20% static upkeep cost since the August "Power Trip" update — account for that when walling in.
Design rules
- Honeycomb: add extra layers of walls around your core so raiders spend more explosives.
- Airlock: two doors in sequence so nobody can push past you when you open the door.
- Hide the TC deep inside; if raiders reach it, they can claim your base.
- Watch soft sides. Walls and foundations have a weak side (the "soft side") — make sure it faces inward.
- Loot spread: split your loot between rooms so one breach doesn't wipe you out.
Progression: Scrap, Tech Tree, Workbenches
- Workbench Level 1 / 2 / 3 unlock progressively better crafting and blueprint access.
- The Tech Tree on each workbench lets you spend scrap to unlock blueprints in order.
- Recyclers at monuments turn components into scrap and materials. Since the August 2026 "Power Trip" update, green recyclers outside safe zones return less by default and get their efficiency back (and recycle faster) when the Power Plant is supplying power.
- Research Table lets you learn a specific item's blueprint by consuming one plus scrap.
- Workbench Upgrades (May 2026): nine rare, non-craftable upgrades you can find and install on workbenches for unique bonuses.
Monuments and PvE Threats
Monument | What's there
Outpost | Safe zone; vendors, recyclers, research table. Scientists shoot anyone hostile
Bandit Camp | Safe zone; gambling, vehicle and weapon vendors
Gas Station, Supermarket | Easy early loot, green card puzzles, recyclers
Harbor, Train Yard, Water Treatment, Power Plant | Mid-tier loot and blue card puzzles
Military Tunnels, Launch Site, Airfield | High-tier loot, red card puzzles, Bradley APC at Launch Site
Oil Rig (Small / Large) | Scientists and a locked crate; excellent late loot
Cargo Ship | Roaming event; scientists and crates
Keycards and puzzles
- Green → Blue → Red keycards. Each card opens a door at the next tier of monument. Most doors also need a fuse in the fuse box.
- Monument Blockers (September 2026): red keycard puzzle rooms now have destructible barriers. They take serious damage, don't respawn once destroyed, weaker variants can be broken with melee, and they decay if left for 24 hours. Bring explosives or a group.
Player-maintained monuments (August 2026)
The "Power Trip" update tied several monuments together:
- Power Plant: insert Heavy Fuses (found as loot) into special fuse boxes to power the island.
- Launch Site: power the Satellite Control Computer and insert an aiming module to bring down a satellite; the crash drops loot crates that every player can see.
- Water Treatment: gearbox mechanics restore roadside water dispensers.
- Dome: flipping the Oil Rig switches pumps crude for about 20 minutes; drain it with a Tanker vehicle module and haul it to a car lift.
- Marketplace drones (September 2026): the drone marketplace now needs the power plant running; its battery charges while the Power Plant's fuses are active and it starts accepting purchases at 50% charge.
Helicopters and hot air balloons
Breach and Clear made Attack Helicopter armor break in stages — left panel at 80% health, right panel at 70%, front panel at 60% — exposing the pilot and gunner. Hot Air Balloons got similar panels dropping at 90/80/70/60%.
Raiding and Defending
- Sulfur is king. Nearly every raid tool needs gunpowder and explosives from sulfur.
- Common raid tools: Timed Explosive Charge (C4), Rockets, Satchel Charges, Beancan Grenades, Explosive 5.56 ammo. Satchels and beancans are cheap early options; C4 and rockets are efficient late.
- Raid the weak point. Doors are usually cheaper than walls; scout with binoculars first.
- Online defense: keep ammo, meds, and a spare kit near your doors. Build shooting floors or peek-downs.
- Mortar (May 2026): a new long-range deployable. There's no aiming guide — use binoculars to estimate.
- Tin Can Alarm (May 2026): can be rigged with grenades, flares, or smoke to trigger on tripwire.
Healing and Survival
- Bandages stop bleeding; Medical Syringes heal quickly; Large Medkits heal over time and now remove radiation.
- Medical Honey Bandage (new): a Workbench Level 1 heal between bandages and syringes, made with honey from bee farms.
- Radiation at monuments needs rad-protective clothing (Hazmat Suit).
- Food and water: cook meat in a campfire, eat pies for buffs (durations extended in September 2026).
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Leaving loot in twig or wood bases. Upgrade to stone before you log off.
- Forgetting to fill the TC. Decay will do the raiding for you.
- Building near big monuments on wipe day. Clans claim them fast.
- Carrying everything on you. Bank your loot.
- Opening your door with people outside. Build an airlock.
- Running Launch Site or Oil Rig with no meds. Scientists and players both hit hard.
- Adding too many teammates to one TC. Upkeep tax now climbs past four players.
Advanced Tips
- Recycle, don't craft, early: components → scrap → Tech Tree is the fastest path to Workbench 2.
- Farm monuments in a loop (road barrels → Gas Station → Supermarket) for green cards and scrap.
- Use sleeping bags as a respawn network around the map; you can now favorite bags and see them on the compass (August 2026).
- Raid late in the wipe only with a plan to hold the loot — counter-raids are common.
- Drive smarter: modular cars got better handling and a handbrake (Ctrl) in September 2026 for drifts and hairpin turns.
- Learn recoil patterns in a practice server for the AK and LR-300; it's the biggest PvP skill gap.
- Play the power grid. Getting the Power Plant running unlocks the marketplace and other powered amenities for everyone — and brings players to you.
FAQ
When do official Rust servers wipe? Force wipe is the first Thursday of each month when the monthly update drops (the September 2026 update landed on September 3).
What should I craft first? Stone Hatchet, Stone Pickaxe, then a Hunting Bow and a Sleeping Bag.
How do I stop my base from decaying? Fill the Tool Cupboard with the materials your base is made from. Group size now increases upkeep beyond four authorized players.
What's the best early gun? Double Barrel Shotgun and Revolver are the go-to early picks; the Semi-Automatic Rifle and Thompson are the next step up. Check the Tech Tree on your workbench for the exact tier on your server.
How do I get scrap fast? Break road barrels, loot crates, and recycle components at monument recyclers.
Where are HQM nodes? Added in the September 2026 update. They're very rare but show up across the island, and they're most common in the Jungle biome.
What are monument blockers? Destructible barriers in red keycard puzzle rooms, added in September 2026, that slow down early access to loot.
