A practical guide to Ranch Simulator: what to do in your first days, how to turn the family ranch into a money machine, livestock and breeding, crops, meat and dairy processing, horses, hunting, co-op tips, and what the 2026 updates changed.

Researched September 2026 — current as of build 1.36 (hotfix, September 1, 2026), following the Vehicle Physics and Handling Update (August 25, 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Finish the introductory quests. They teach the core loop and pay out early cash (the "Novice" achievement pops when you're done).
  • Chop wood early. Trees are a free resource. Cut logs (10 earns "Home sawmill") and use the timber for your early rebuilding.
  • Rebuild the house and sleep in a bed. Sleeping skips time and is part of the daily loop.
  • Start with chickens. A chicken coop is cheap, eggs are steady income, and breeding chickens teaches you the breeding system.
  • Sell the day's produce to the burger shop. Regular deliveries are one of the most reliable early incomes (doing it 10 times earns "Local supplier").
  • Buy tools at the hardware store and vehicles at the car store. A pickup and a trailer save you hours of carrying.
  • Use the bank loan sparingly. It exists (and there's an achievement for it), but debt is only worth it for income-producing buildings.
  • Protect your animals from wolves. Fence pens properly and keep a rifle handy.
  • Water and feed every day. Healthy animals breed and produce; neglected ones don't.

Overview

Your grandfather's ranch in a remote forested valley has fallen on hard times. You rebuild the homestead, raise livestock, grow crops, process meat and dairy, train horses, and hunt in the surrounding open world — alone or with up to four players in online co-op.

The Steam store lists Ranch Simulator's release date as November 3, 2023, and it has continued to receive updates through 2026.

The Core Loop

Step | What you do

Gather | Chop trees, forage, hunt

Build | Repair the house, build coops, barns, pens and fences

Raise | Buy animals, feed and water them, breed them

Produce | Eggs, milk, meat, sausages, cheese, honey, crops

Sell | Deliver goods to buyers in town (such as the burger shop)

Reinvest | Buy vehicles, tools, more animals and bigger buildings

Livestock

Chickens

  • Build a chicken coop first.
  • Collect eggs daily for income.
  • To hatch chicks, create the right conditions for an egg to hatch — use an ovoscope to illuminate (candle) eggs and check whether they're fertile.
  • A small flock scales quickly into a steady egg business.

Cows

  • Cows need a proper pen, feed and water.
  • Milk them and fill a milk can for sale or cheese-making.
  • The stun gun is the humane slaughter method (there's an achievement for it).
  • Highland Cows Pack (paid DLC, May 2026, $2.99/€2.99/£2.49): a Scottish breed in black, white and ginger that you can milk and breed.

Goats

  • Goats produce milk too — collect a bucket of goat milk (the "G.O.A.T Milk" achievement).
  • Goat milk is a second dairy stream alongside cows; check the processing station in your build to see which milk it accepts for cheese.

Pigs and other animals

  • Pigs and other meat animals feed the sausage production line.
  • Keep males and females separated if you want to control population — or use the sterilization gun added in the May 2026 update.

Bees

  • Set up beehives and collect honey. A full barrel of honey earns "Beekeeper."
  • Honey is a low-maintenance side income.

Pets

  • You can buy a pet ("Favorite pet" achievement). Pets are for fun rather than income.

Breeding essentials (post-May 2026)

  • Animals now have sex markers that clearly show male or female; the marker turns grey when an animal is sterilized.
  • Newly purchased animals no longer scatter when they arrive.
  • Dead animals are automatically skinned after a timer, reducing lag on big ranches.
  • Name your animals if you like ("More than cattle").

Crops

  • Plant in crop plots (10 plants earns "Gardener").
  • Water crops; the August 2026 update made rain fill buckets and troughs left in the open, which helps with watering and animal water.
  • Buy a tractor and harvester once you scale up ("Experienced farmer").
  • Fill the harvest trailer completely for "First harvest."
  • Use a composter to recycle waste ("Recycling").

Processing: Meat and Dairy

Product | How

Sausages | Process meat into sausages ("Butcher" for cooking 5)

Cheese | Turn milk into cheese products ("Cheesemaker" for 5)

Milk | Fill milk cans from cows; goat milk in buckets

Honey | Collect from hives into barrels

Eggs | Collect from coops

Processed goods sell for more than raw produce. As soon as you have a steady milk or meat supply, invest in processing.

Horses

  • Buy horses and look at their stats; buying one with at least one maximum stat earns "A good buy."
  • Train them in the training paddock — jumping 30 obstacles earns "Jump!", and a fully trained horse earns "Hard training."
  • Ride them around the valley ("Jockey" for 20 km).
  • Trained horses can be sold, which is one of the game's income paths.

Oil

There's also oil to profit from — earning $10,000 from selling oil unlocks "Oil tycoon." It's a mid-game income option once your ranch basics are running.

Hunting

  • The forest has deer, bears and other wildlife.
  • Bring a rifle and approach slowly; spooked animals run.
  • Wolves are a threat both in the woods and at the ranch; they'll go after your livestock.
  • Hunting 10 wild animals earns "Avid hunter."
  • Hunting is also the game's "slow down" activity — a break from ranch chores.

Vehicles (Updated August 2026)

The Vehicle Physics and Handling Update (August 25, 2026) reworked physics and default handling, updated the engine for stability and optimization, and added full vehicle customization at the car store garage:

  • Change wheels, transmission and drivetrain
  • Adjust steering speed and angle
  • Adjust suspension height and strength
  • Adjust brake power and engine torque
  • An AMD frame generation option

Other vehicle notes:

  • Lost or stuck vehicles can be recovered via a terminal in the car store (May 2026 update).
  • You can repaint vehicles (except the UTV) — "Upgrade your car."
  • A paint mixing machine lets you make custom colors (mix 5 times for "New colors"); build 1.36 fixed entering hex numbers.
  • The May 2026 update also changed gearbox parameters so vehicles respond better when pulling away, and made map traffic try to avoid people and cars.

Building Your Ranch

Priorities:

  • House first. Repair or build it, place a bed.
  • Chicken coop. Cheap and immediate income.
  • Fencing and pens. Before buying larger livestock.
  • Barn and water troughs. For cows and goats.
  • Processing buildings. Sausages and cheese.
  • Crop plots. Once animals are stable.
  • Horse paddock. Later, for training and selling horses.

Name your ranch ("I'm here for a long time").

Southwest Ranch and Farm Expansion Pack

A paid DLC with a Southwest map. As of build 1.36 (September 1, 2026), players who don't own the DLC can join co-op games hosted on the Southwest map — only the host needs it.

Co-op Tips (Up to 4 Players)

  • Split jobs: one player on animals, one on building, one on crops, one on hunting and sales.
  • Revive partners if they go down ("First aid").
  • Recent hotfixes fixed client-side vehicle modifications not saving and co-op jitter.
  • Only the host needs the Southwest DLC to play on that map.

Recent Fixes Worth Knowing

  • Build 1.351 (August 28, 2026): trees should no longer spin out of control in most cases; milk cans no longer fill with rainwater; highland cows can no longer be bought without the DLC.
  • August 26, 2026 hotfix: fixed a crash on newer Intel processors; partial fix for spinning trees.
  • June 30, 2026: fixed an NVIDIA Streamline (DLSS) version issue with newer GTX/MX drivers.
  • January 2026: fixed animals disappearing from trailers and co-op client jitter.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying big livestock before building pens. Animals wander off or become wolf food.
  • Skipping daily feeding and watering. Production and breeding suffer.
  • Selling raw goods when you can process them. Sausages and cheese pay better.
  • Taking a big loan early. Only borrow for things that make money.
  • Overbreeding. Too many animals causes lag and overwhelms feed supply; sterilize if needed.
  • Leaving milk cans out in the rain on older builds (fixed in 1.351).

Advanced Tips

  • Automate water with rain. Since August 2026, troughs and buckets left outside fill with rain.
  • Tune your work truck. Lower gearing and higher torque make towing trailers much easier after the vehicle update.
  • Candle eggs with the ovoscope to find fertile ones instead of guessing.
  • Chain income streams. Quests and eggs early, dairy and meat processing mid-game, horses and oil later. Side quests ("Part time job" for 5) are also quick cash.
  • Keep dead-animal counts low — the auto-skin timer helps, but clearing them yourself keeps performance smooth on big ranches.
  • Millionaire: earning $1,000,000 is the long-term goal; diversified processing is the path.

FAQ

What's the best way to make money early? Finish the intro and side quests, start eggs, and make daily sales to the burger shop, then scale into dairy and meat processing.

Can I play multiplayer? Yes, online co-op for up to four players.

Do my friends need the Southwest DLC to join? No. As of build 1.36, clients without the DLC can join games hosted on the Southwest map.

How do I stop my animals from breeding? Use the sterilization gun added in the May 2026 Quality of Life update. The animal's sex marker turns grey.

My vehicle is stuck or lost. What do I do? Use the vehicle recovery terminal in the car store.

Why are trees spinning after I cut them? A known physics issue that the August 2026 hotfixes largely fixed; trees can still bounce if they land on objects.
