A full guide to LEGO The Lord of the Rings on PC: how story and Free Play fit together, the open-world Middle-earth hub, Mithril Bricks and the Blacksmith, Red Bricks, a level list for all three films, and a clean route to 100% and every achievement.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the September 2025 Steam update (Steam Deck verification). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • Finish a level in Story mode first, then return in Free Play. Many collectibles need characters you do not have yet. Free Play lets you swap to any unlocked character.
  • Middle-earth is a hub world. Between levels you explore an open map with side quests, Mithril Bricks, characters to buy and fast travel.
  • Mithril Bricks plus Blueprints equal items. Take them to the Blacksmith in Bree to forge gear with special effects.
  • Red Bricks unlock Extras. Stud multipliers are the most valuable; get them early and every later level pays far more.
  • Studs are everything. Studs buy characters and extras. Smash everything, and aim for the True Adventurer stud target in each level.
  • Characters have unique abilities. Lighting dark places, being thrown, shooting distant targets, and character-exclusive items. If you are stuck, you are probably using the wrong character.
  • Co-op is drop-in, drop-out. A second player can join at any time for local play.
  • Use map stones and fast travel. Unlocking every Map Stone is an achievement, and fast travel through the Map saves huge amounts of walking.

How the Game Is Structured

Mode | Purpose

Story | Play each film's levels in order with the story characters

Free Play | Replay levels with any character to reach collectibles you could not before

Middle-earth free roam | Explore the hub, do fetch quests, collect Mithril Bricks, unlock characters

The game adapts the three films and follows the original story. The Palantír is used to jump between story lines, and the minifigures deliver actual dialogue from the films.

Level List

Six levels per film, plus a bonus level after completion. The names below are the in-game level names used by the achievements.

Film | Levels

The Fellowship of the Ring | Prologue, The Black Rider, Weathertop, The Pass of Caradhras, The Mines of Moria, Amon Hen

The Two Towers | Taming Gollum, The Dead Marshes, Track Hobbits, Warg Attack, Helm's Deep, Osgiliath

The Return of the King | The Secret Stairs, The Paths of the Dead, Cirith Ungol, The Battle of Pelennor Fields, The Black Gate, Mount Doom

Bonus | The Bonus Level (after completion)

Story Achievements by Level

Every story level has a completion achievement, so you can track progress from the Steam list:

Level | Achievement

Prologue | The strength of Men failed.

The Black Rider | It's a dangerous business...

Weathertop | That is no trinket you carry.

(Story beat after Weathertop) | Great! ...Where are we going? (Form the Fellowship)

The Pass of Caradhras | The long way around.

The Mines of Moria | This is no mine... it's a tomb.

Amon Hen | Let's hunt some Orc!

Taming Gollum | On the Precious...

The Dead Marshes | Soft and quick as shadows...

Track Hobbits | Safe is where I'll keep you.

Warg Attack | Stinking creatures...

Helm's Deep | The battle is about to begin...

Osgiliath | A Wizard should know better!

The Secret Stairs | Naughty little fly...

The Paths of the Dead | They have been summoned.

Cirith Ungol | We did it, Mr Frodo.

The Battle of Pelennor Fields | You and whose army?

The Black Gate | This day we fight!

Mount Doom | It's gone.

Bonus Level | The Lord of the Ring.

The story is only the start: the 100% achievement, There and Back Again, is separate and marked Single Player Only.

Forming the Fellowship is its own story beat with an achievement, and the free-roam sections between levels let you explore places such as the Shire, Bree, Trollshaws and Isengard.

Character Abilities

LEGO The Lord of the Rings has more than 80 playable characters. Instead of memorizing every one, learn the key ability types:

Ability | Example users | What it does

Light | Frodo, Gandalf, Radagast, Saruman | Lights up dark places so you can progress

Throwable | Gimli | Other characters can throw him at objects (Don't tell the Elf... is 30 throws)

Ranged | Legolas and other archers | Hit distant targets and switches

Item-based skills | Whoever carries the item | Some tools and items are exclusive to one character or a small group; if a puzzle icon does not respond, try someone else

Each character has their own inventory, usually weapons and quest items, which is how many fetch quests and puzzles work: pick up an item with one character, then use or give it elsewhere. A separate shared inventory holds all Mithril items and collectibles, so forged gear is available to every character.

Stuck on a puzzle? Look at the icon or colored object you cannot interact with, then cycle the character wheel. The game signals which ability or item it needs; in Free Play you almost always have someone who fits.

Tips:

  • The character wheel shows who you have. In Free Play, the game picks a varied party for you, but you can swap freely.
  • Buy characters with studs once unlocked; some of the most useful ones are cheap.
  • Unlocking every character is its own achievement (Not with 10,000 men...), and it is marked Single Player Only.

Collectibles and Currencies

Collectible | Where | Why

Studs | Everywhere | Buy characters and extras; True Adventurer target per level

Mithril Bricks | Levels and hub | Forge items at the Blacksmith

Blueprints | Levels and hub | Recipes for Blacksmith items

Red Bricks | Levels and hub | Unlock Extras such as stud multipliers

Characters | Story, hub, purchases | Needed for abilities and 100%

Treasure items | Quests and hub | Dress a character entirely in treasure for an achievement

Map Stones | Hub | Unlock them across Middle-earth; all of them is an achievement

The Blacksmith

The Blacksmith in Bree forges items from Mithril Bricks and Blueprints. Notable forgeable items include the Fire Bow and Ice Bow (crafting both earns an achievement), and forging every Mithril item is required for Here's a pretty thing!. Items give fun and useful effects. Two other items are tied to achievements: the Ent Draught (use it on Pippin) and the Mushroom Crown (equip it on Aragorn), so keep an eye out for them as you explore and forge.

Red Bricks

Red Bricks are hidden in levels and in the world. Once collected, buy the Extra they unlock. Prioritize stud multipliers, since they stack and make everything else faster, then whichever utility Extras make collecting easier.

The Hub: Middle-earth Free Roam

  • Fetch quests: characters around the world ask for specific items. Completing all of them earns There's some good in this world.
  • Cooking puzzles: two cooking puzzles earn What about second breakfast?
  • Fishing: fishing spots use a timing mini-game; press the button as the icon flashes. Twenty perfect catches earn an achievement.
  • Fast travel through the map, and horse riding in certain areas.
  • Map Stones: unlocking all of them is an achievement (Of all the inquisitive Hobbits).
  • The map spans Middle-earth except Mirkwood and the lands south of Mordor.

100% Route

  • Story mode, all three films. Achievements for each level unlock as you go. Collect what you can reach.
  • Unlock stud multipliers from Red Bricks as soon as you have them.
  • Free Play every level with a full character roster. Aim for True Adventurer in each level (Ready for another adventure).
  • Middle-earth cleanup: map stones, Mithril Bricks, fetch quests, fishing, cooking, treasure items, remaining characters.
  • Blacksmith: forge every Mithril item.
  • Bonus level and remaining achievements.

Achievement Tips

Most achievements come naturally. These need a deliberate effort:

Achievement | How

That one counts as mine! | In Helm's Deep, finish one of Gimli's opponents as Legolas

That still only counts as one! | Defeat an Oliphaunt as Legolas

That is a rare gift. | Reach Amon Hen's summit without being captured by Boromir (single player)

One does not simply... | Walk into Mordor

Pointy-eared Elvish princeling. | Defeat 42 Uruk-hai as Legolas

Don't tell the Elf... | Throw Gimli 30 times

It won't be that easy! | Jump into the Mount Doom fires as Isildur during the Prologue

We cannot linger. | Complete The Mines of Moria in under 15 minutes

An expected journey. | Travel to Trollshaws as Bilbo

... And away he goes, Precious! | Defeat Gollum as Gollum

Dance of the dead. | Turn an enemy into a skeleton and make them dance

Taking the Hobbits to Isengard. | Travel to Isengard as every playable Hobbit

Delved too greedily... | Collect more than 10,000,000,000 studs (single player)

I'm glad to be with you. | Complete a level in co-op

Many collection achievements are marked Single Player in their descriptions (Red Bricks, Mithril Bricks, characters, map stones, fetch quests, 100%). Do those in a solo save to be safe.

PC Notes

  • A controller is strongly recommended; the game was designed around a gamepad.
  • The September 2025 update was made to get the game Steam Deck verified.
  • Co-op is local drop-in, drop-out with split-screen.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Trying to 100% a level in Story mode. Many collectibles are blocked until Free Play.
  • Skipping stud multipliers. Without them, the 10 billion stud achievement and character purchases are a slog.
  • Walking everywhere. Unlock map stones and use fast travel.
  • Ignoring the Blacksmith. Forged items make exploration faster and are needed for several achievements.
  • Doing Single Player achievements in co-op. Some descriptions specify single player; avoid wasted effort.
  • Forgetting character inventories. If a quest seems stuck, check what the character is carrying.

Advanced Tips

  • Stack multipliers before farming. Replaying a stud-rich level after multipliers is the fastest way to billions.
  • Keep Gimli (throwable) and a light-bearer such as Gandalf in your Free Play party, then swap as needed.
  • Plan Mithril hunts by region. Clear a region's Mithril Bricks, fetch quests and map stones in one visit.
  • Speedrun Moria after learning it. The sub-15-minute achievement is easy once you know the route.
  • Use co-op for combat-heavy levels. A second player makes battles like Helm's Deep and Pelennor much faster.
