A practical guide to Left 4 Dead 2 covering survivors, weapons, healing, every Special Infected, the 14 campaigns, Versus play, Expert tips, and mods.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the June 30, 2026 Steam update (a Linux/security fix; the last content update remains The Last Stand, September 2020). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Stick together. Every Special Infected is built to punish players who wander off. Move as a group of four and wait for stragglers.
- Shove (Mouse2) is your best tool. It knocks back Common Infected, frees teammates from Hunters and Jockeys, and staggers most Specials to buy time. (It doesn't work on Chargers or Tanks.)
- Don't shoot or flashlight the Witch. If you hear crying, turn off your flashlight (F), walk around her, or kill her deliberately.
- Heal smart. First aid kits are precious; pills and adrenaline give temporary health that decays. Heal with a kit when you're low and near a checkpoint, or when you're black-and-white.
- Car alarms trigger a horde. Look for flashing lights on cars and don't shoot them.
- Friendly fire is on above Easy, and it hurts a lot on Advanced and Expert. Don't shoot through teammates.
- Carry a throwable. A Pipe Bomb or Bile Bomb stops a horde, a Molotov stops a Tank or blocks a hallway.
- Take the defibrillator if nobody is carrying a first aid kit replacement. It revives a dead teammate on the spot.
Game State in 2026
Left 4 Dead 2 is feature-complete. Valve's last big content drop was The Last Stand (September 24, 2020), a community-made update that added The Last Stand campaign and new melee weapons (the pitchfork and shovel), among other fixes. Since then, updates have been maintenance: two small patches arrived June 26 and June 30, 2026, focused on security and the Linux build. The game's life now comes from the Steam Workshop and community servers.
Controls
Action | Default Key
Fire / Shove | Mouse1 / Mouse2
Use, pick up, revive, help up | E (hold)
Reload | R
Last weapon | Q
Flashlight | F
Weapon slots | 1–5 (primary, secondary, throwable, medkit, pills)
Scoreboard | Tab
Crouch / Walk | Ctrl / Shift
Crouching improves accuracy; walking makes you quieter around the Witch.
The Survivors
L4D2 Survivors | L4D1 Survivors (The Passing, The Sacrifice, L4D1 ports)
Coach, Ellis, Nick, Rochelle | Bill, Francis, Louis, Zoey
Survivors are cosmetic — there's no stat difference between them.
Health and Healing
- First Aid Kit: heals a large portion of your missing health (80 percent) and removes black-and-white status. It takes several seconds, and you can heal teammates.
- Pain Pills: instant temporary health (50) that decays over time.
- Adrenaline: a smaller amount of temporary health (25), plus faster movement and faster actions (reviving, healing) for a short time.
- Defibrillator: revives a dead teammate's body. It takes the medkit slot.
- Incapacitation: at zero health you go down and can shoot your pistol until revived. Going down twice without healing puts you in black-and-white (grey screen, heartbeat); the next incap kills you. Healing with a kit clears it.
- Temporary health protects you but drains, so pop pills right before danger, not long before.
Weapons
Primaries
Tier | Weapons | Notes
Tier 1 | Pump Shotgun, Chrome Shotgun, SMG, Silenced SMG | Found early in each campaign
Tier 2 Rifles | M16 Assault Rifle, AK-47, Combat Rifle (SCAR, burst) | All-rounders; AK hits hardest, M16 has the most ammo
Tier 2 Shotguns | Auto Shotgun, Combat Shotgun | Best for close range, Witches, and Chargers
Tier 2 Snipers | Hunting Rifle, Sniper Rifle | Long-range picks, good against Specials
Specials | Grenade Launcher, M60 | Limited ammo, can't be refilled from ammo piles
Counter-Strike weapons | MP5, SG 552, Scout, AWP | Enabled for all players since The Last Stand update (2020); spawn alongside the standard guns
Secondaries
- Pistol / Dual Pistols: infinite ammo; pick up a second pistol for dual.
- Magnum: high damage, infinite ammo.
- Melee: katana, machete, fire axe, crowbar, cricket bat, baseball bat, frying pan, electric guitar, nightstick (tonfa), golf club, knife, pitchfork, shovel. Melee kills commons in one hit and never runs out, which makes it the best secondary on higher difficulties. The chainsaw has limited fuel but shreds everything.
Throwables and Upgrades
Item | Use
Pipe Bomb | Beeps to lure the horde, then explodes
Molotov | Area fire; great on Tanks and chokepoints
Bile Bomb (Boomer bile) | Makes the horde attack whatever it hits, including a Tank
Incendiary / Explosive ammo packs | Deploy for your team; one magazine of special ammo
Laser Sight | Improves accuracy permanently for that weapon
Gas cans, propane tanks, oxygen tanks, fireworks crates | Pick up and shoot to create fire or explosions
The Special Infected
Infected | Tell | What It Does | Counter
Boomer | Burping, gurgling | Vomits bile that attracts a horde | Shove it away or shoot it at range; don't pop it next to you
Hunter | Screech, growling | Pounces and pins a survivor | Shove it off the victim, or shove it mid-leap; shotguns kill it fast
Smoker | Coughing, green smoke | Drags a survivor with its tongue | Shoot the Smoker or shove the victim; the victim can shoot/shove if facing it
Charger | Roaring, big arm | Charges, grabs one survivor, pummels them | Sidestep the charge; focus fire once it's pummeling
Jockey | Giggling | Rides a survivor and steers them into danger | Shove or shoot it off quickly
Spitter | Hissing | Spits an acid pool that ramps up damage | Get out of the acid immediately; don't defend in corners
Tank | Music cue, ground shaking | Massive HP, punches and throws rocks | Spread out, set it on fire, kite it, focus fire; never fight it in a small room
Witch | Crying | Instantly incapacitates (or kills on Expert) whoever startles her | Avoid, turn off flashlight, or crown her
Crowning the Witch: walk up while she's sitting, place a shotgun at point-blank to her head, and unload. With an Auto or Combat Shotgun it's usually one burst. Missing means she goes after you, so have the team ready.
Campaigns
# | Campaign | Setting | Finale Type
1 | Dead Center | Atlanta hotel and mall | Scavenge gas for the stock car
2 | Dark Carnival | Carnival | Concert (defend)
3 | Swamp Fever | Louisiana bayou | Plantation (defend)
4 | Hard Rain | Rural town in a storm | Backtrack through the flooded town, then a holdout finale
5 | The Parish | New Orleans | Bridge run (gauntlet)
6 | The Passing | Riverside, with the L4D1 cast | Scavenge gas
7 | The Sacrifice | Rail yard to a bridge | Sacrifice finale
8 | No Mercy | Mercy Hospital rooftop | Defend the roof
9 | Crash Course | Industrial area | Defend the truck depot
10 | Death Toll | Riverside town | Boathouse defend
11 | Dead Air | Airport | Hold out while the plane is refueled
12 | Blood Harvest | Forest farmhouse | Farm defend
13 | Cold Stream | Mountain river | Bridge gauntlet
14 | The Last Stand | Lighthouse | Hold the lighthouse
Finale tips:
- Scavenge finales (Dead Center, The Passing): one or two players carry cans while the others guard. Don't let a Charger or Jockey drag the carrier away.
- Gauntlet finales (The Parish, Cold Stream): keep moving. Stopping to fight lets the endless horde surround you.
- Holdout finales (No Mercy, Dark Carnival, Swamp Fever, Hard Rain, and most others): pick a position with one approach and stock up throwables before starting the event.
Game Modes
Mode | Description
Campaign | Standard co-op story, 4 survivors
Realism | No outlines on items or teammates, dead survivors don't reappear in rescue closets, and headshots matter more
Versus | 4v4: one team plays Survivors, the other plays Special Infected, then swap
Scavenge | Versus, but survivors fill a generator with gas cans
Survival | Hold out as long as possible against endless waves; medals by time
Mutations | Rotating rule variants (e.g., Realism Versus, Last Man on Earth, Four Swordsmen)
Difficulty Guide
- Easy/Normal: learn maps and Specials. Friendly fire is minor.
- Advanced: Commons hit much harder, friendly fire hurts, Tanks are far tougher. Expect to need teamwork.
- Expert: Commons deal heavy damage, friendly fire is brutal, and the Witch kills in one hit. Every Special must be handled instantly. Melee secondaries and shotguns carry here.
Versus Basics (Playing Infected)
- Coordinate spawns. Specials spawning one at a time die one at a time. Wait until everyone is ready, then attack together.
- Combo classic: Boomer vomits, Hunter pounces the isolated survivor, Spitter drops acid on the group trying to help, Charger or Jockey separates another.
- Hunter damage scales with pounce distance — high, long pounces hurt more.
- As Tank: punch rocks off walls, target isolated survivors, and use terrain to avoid Molotovs.
- As Survivors in Versus: hug walls in corridors to avoid Charger impacts, move fast, and shove liberally.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Rushing ahead alone — the AI Director punishes separation with Specials.
- Healing too early with a kit, then having nothing when you're black-and-white.
- Shooting a car alarm or startling the Witch because you were spraying at commons.
- Standing still in Spitter acid to finish a reload.
- Fighting a Tank indoors with no escape route.
- Leaving the defibrillator behind or ignoring a teammate's rescue closet.
- Throwing the Molotov at your own feet when the horde is on you.
Advanced Tips
- The AI Director adjusts item spawns, hordes, and Special timing based on how the team is doing. Every run is different, so read the environment rather than memorizing item locations.
- Deadstop and skeet: shove a Hunter mid-air (deadstop) or kill it mid-pounce with a shotgun blast (skeet). Both are core Expert skills.
- Tank kiting: keep it chasing the healthiest survivor in a loop while the others shoot. Setting it on fire adds steady damage over time, so light it up early.
- Hold corners during hordes. Stand in a corner with your back covered and shove anything that reaches you.
- Leave the M60 and Grenade Launcher for key moments like finales; they can't be refilled.
- Workshop: subscribe to maps, custom campaigns, and quality-of-life mods from the Steam Workshop. Addons always work in local play; many servers (especially for Versus) enforce file consistency and will block or disable some mods.
- Console: enable the developer console in Options to use local commands for practice servers.
FAQ
Is Left 4 Dead 2 still updated? Only with maintenance patches. The June 2026 updates were technical fixes. The last content update was The Last Stand in 2020.
What's the best weapon in L4D2? For most situations, the Auto Shotgun or AK-47 as primary and a melee weapon (katana, machete, or fire axe) as secondary.
Can I play solo? Yes, with AI bots in Campaign. Bots handle basics (shooting, healing, reviving) but make poor tactical decisions on higher difficulties, so don't rely on them for throwables or Witch handling.
How do I crown the Witch? Walk up to her quietly, put a shotgun at point-blank against her head, and fire until she dies — usually one burst with a Tier 2 shotgun.
What order should I play campaigns? The official order is Dead Center, Dark Carnival, Swamp Fever, Hard Rain, The Parish. The Passing, The Sacrifice, No Mercy, Crash Course, Death Toll, Dead Air, Blood Harvest, Cold Stream, and The Last Stand came later, and each works standalone.
Do mods get me banned? Workshop addons won't VAC-ban you. Some servers block them, and cheats or memory editing on VAC servers will.
