A practical guide to Forza Motorsport (2023): the current state of the game, the Builders Cup career, car progression and upgrades, assists, tuning basics, and Featured Multiplayer racecraft.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the final content state (Turn 10 announced no further content updates in December 2025; servers remained online as of September 2026). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

State of the Game (September 2026)

Forza Motorsport launched on October 10, 2023 for Windows (Steam and Microsoft Store) and Xbox Series X/S. It got a long run of updates, including the 20th Anniversary Update, which added the 16.5 km Fujimi Kaido mountain road, cover cars from earlier Motorsport games, and Open Track Day and Drift Meetups. The Nürburgring Nordschleife and Sunset Peninsula are also on the track list.

Things to know before you buy or come back:

  • Development has ended. In a December 2025 blog post Turn 10 said Forza Motorsport would get no further content updates (reports added: no new bug fixes either), but its servers stay active. Turn 10 lost almost half its staff in July 2025 and merged into Playground Games in September 2026 (per Wikipedia, citing Xbox Wire).
  • Online still works. Featured Multiplayer, Free Play, and rotating tours kept running into 2026. Weekly posts in early 2026 kept returning tours to Career, such as the Nemesis Tour (January, reward 1998 Mercedes-Benz AMG CLK GTR) and the Daily Racers Tour (February, reward 2021 Toyota Yaris GR).
  • Community leagues are very active. Official Steam posts through mid-2026 are "Community Calendar" roundups of Discord-run series (r/FM4, TORA, Late Night Racing, AR12, and others) on tracks like Hockenheim, Le Mans, Mount Panorama, and Suzuka. If you want structured, clean racing, these leagues are the best reason to own the game in 2026.
  • It goes on deep sale. The August 2026 Forza franchise sale took up to 60% off.

Quick Start

  • Do the Builders Cup first. It's the single-player career and the fastest way to learn tracks, earn credits, and level cars.
  • Start further back on the grid. In single-player you can pick your starting position. Starting further back earns bigger payouts.
  • Use practice sessions. Each career event lets you run practice laps that earn Car XP and set a target time before the race.
  • Level your car before upgrading it. Upgrades unlock by Car Level, and Car Points pay for them. Stick with one car for a while.
  • Set AI difficulty honestly. Higher difficulty pays more, but finishing near the front on a comfortable setting teaches more than crashing out on a hard one.
  • Turn on the braking line, then taper it off. It teaches braking points on unfamiliar tracks faster than anything else.
  • Respect track limits and contact. Forza Race Regulations hand out time penalties online, and your Safety Rating follows you.
  • Do Featured Multiplayer qualifying. Grid position comes from your qualifying time. A clean lap matters more than a heroic one.
  • Grab free reward cars. Career tours and Challenge Hub challenges give free cars and suits (for example, finishing all four series of the Daily Racers Tour in Career unlocks the 2021 Toyota Yaris GR).

Car Progression: Car Level and Car Points

Forza Motorsport uses a per-car RPG-style progression:

  • Car XP comes from driving that specific car: laps, clean corners, and race results. Clean sectors and corners score better.
  • Car Level goes up with XP. Higher levels unlock more upgrade categories and parts.
  • Car Points (CP) are earned per car and spent on upgrades (engine, tires, weight reduction, aero, and so on). Each car has its own CP.
  • Credits buy cars. Upgrades are paid for with CP, not credits.

What this means in practice:

Situation | Best move

New car you plan to race a lot | Run practice laps in a low-pressure event to raise Car Level

Upgrade menu locked | You need more Car Level, not credits

Out of CP | Keep driving that car. CP only comes from that car

Performance Index (PI) too high for an event | Take off power upgrades or add weight/ballast. Tires and handling usually give more lap time per PI

Since an update in the game's first year, you can install upgrades at any time and swap builds, so experimenting is cheap.

Builders Cup (Career)

The Builders Cup is built from tours, each made up of series around a car class or theme. The loop:

  • Pick a series and a car that fits its rules. The game often offers a loaner or a gift car.
  • Practice on the track. The game sets a target lap time and you earn XP and CP for your car.
  • Choose your grid spot and difficulty. Further back and harder difficulty mean higher payouts.
  • Race, then level and upgrade the car between rounds.

Tips:

  • Focus on one car per series. Spreading XP across many cars leaves them all underpowered.
  • Try gift and reward cars. Many Career tours end with a reward car, which saves credits.
  • Don't max PI immediately. A slightly lower-PI car with good tires often beats a power build on twisty tracks like Hakone or Mugello.

Assists and Difficulty

Assist | Keep on while learning? | Notes

Braking line | Yes, then "braking only" or off | Best teacher for braking points

ABS | Yes on pad | Many wheel users switch it off later

Traction control | Yes in high-power cars | Removing it gains a little speed but needs throttle control

Stability control | Early only | Costs speed through fast corners

Automatic shifting | Fine on pad | Manual (and manual with clutch) is quicker once learned

Steering assist | Only for very new players | Limits your line choice

AI opponents run on a numbered difficulty scale. Raise it one step at a time once you're winning comfortably from mid-grid.

Tuning Basics

You don't need to be an engineer. Start here:

  • Tire pressure: adjust so the hot pressures sit around the game's telemetry sweet spot. Too high means less grip, too low means sluggish response.
  • Anti-roll bars: stiffen the front for less oversteer, stiffen the rear for less understeer.
  • Aero: more downforce means more grip in fast corners but less top speed. Big on Spa and Suzuka, smaller on Le Mans.
  • Brake balance and pressure: move the balance forward if the rear locks, and lower the pressure if you lock the fronts.
  • Gearing: shorten the final drive on tight tracks and lengthen it for long straights.

Community tunes are shared in-game. Downloading a proven tune for a Featured Multiplayer spec car is normal and smart.

Featured Multiplayer runs rotating series on a race-weekend structure: practice, qualifying, then race. Your Safety Rating (clean driving) and Skill Rating (results against others) decide who you're matched with. Series in early 2026 included spec series like the BMW M Procar Spec Series, the Birth of Grand Prix Series, and IndyCar, Daytona Sports Car, and Forza GT3 series.

How to race clean and climb:

  • Qualify properly. Grid slots come from your qualifying lap. Bank one safe lap before pushing.
  • Survive lap 1. Most incidents happen at Turn 1. Brake early, hold your line, and don't dive-bomb.
  • Leave a car's width. Crowding people off the track earns penalties and hurts Safety Rating.
  • Track limits count. Repeated cuts earn time penalties.
  • Consistency beats pace. Clean top-half finishes build Skill Rating faster than crashing while chasing wins.
  • Learn tire and fuel wear in longer races. Some series need smart pacing or pit strategy.

For even cleaner racing, join a community league from the official Community Calendar posts. Most use Discord sign-ups and private lobbies with stewards.

Tracks to Learn First

The circuit list mixes real and Forza-original tracks, including Maple Valley (fictional), Grand Oak Raceway (fictional), Hakone (fictional), Mugello, Suzuka, Silverstone, Spa, Le Mans, Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta, Mid-Ohio, Sebring, Lime Rock, Virginia International Raceway, Hockenheim, Catalunya, Kyalami, Yas Marina, Mount Panorama, Indianapolis, Homestead-Miami, and Eaglerock Speedway (fictional), plus Fujimi Kaido and Sunset Peninsula (both fictional fan favorites) and the real Nordschleife.

Track type | Good for learning | Examples

Short and technical | Braking points, throttle control | Lime Rock, Mid-Ohio, Grand Oak

High-speed flowing | Aero, commitment | Suzuka, Spa, Silverstone

Long and tricky | Memorization, consistency | Mount Panorama, Nordschleife, Fujimi Kaido

Ovals | Drafting, pack racing | Homestead-Miami, Indianapolis oval, Eaglerock Speedway

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Buying many cars early. Progression is per car. Level a few instead.
  • Running out of PI budget on power. Tires, weight, and handling usually give more lap time.
  • Skipping practice. It's free XP and CP, and it sets your target lap.
  • Racing online with Stability Control on out of habit. It's slow through fast corners.
  • Ignoring Safety Rating. A low rating puts you in chaotic lobbies, which makes it even harder to raise.
  • Expecting new content. Development has ended, so don't buy expecting future tracks or cars.
  • Not checking PC performance settings. Ray tracing is demanding. Turn it down before blaming the physics for stutter.

Advanced Tips

  • Trail braking: keep a little brake into the corner entry to rotate the car, especially in mid-engine and GT cars.
  • Short-shift high-torque cars out of slow corners to limit wheelspin.
  • Use telemetry to check tire temperatures and suspension travel before changing a tune.
  • Watch the replay of your best qualifying lap and compare it with a faster ghost from the leaderboards.
  • Rivals and leaderboards are a great time sink after development ended, and top times still come in.
  • Wheels: calibrate rotation, deadzones, and force feedback. Many guides recommend lowering in-game FFB until clipping stops.

FAQ

Is Forza Motorsport still supported in 2026? The servers are online and multiplayer works, but Turn 10 announced in December 2025 that there would be no further content updates.

Is Forza Motorsport dead online? Official Featured Multiplayer still rotates series, and community leagues posted busy event calendars through at least mid-2026. Evening and weekend lobbies are the busiest.

How do I unlock upgrades? Drive the car to raise its Car Level, then spend that car's Car Points in the upgrade shop.

Should I start at the back of the grid? In single-player, yes, if you want the bigger payout and can pass cleanly. It also teaches racecraft.

Does it have the Nordschleife and Fujimi Kaido? Yes. Both are in the game. Fujimi Kaido came with the 20th Anniversary Update.

Controller or wheel? Both are fully supported. A controller with ABS and TCS on is competitive in most lobbies. A wheel gives more precision and feel.
