Installing FiveM, finding the right server, getting through whitelists, roleplay etiquette and the terms servers use, common commands, troubleshooting, and the basics of running your own server.
Researched September 2026 — current as of FiveM (Legacy) and FiveM for GTAV Enhanced (Early Access). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- You need a legit copy of GTA V on PC. FiveM checks ownership the first time you launch it. Regular FiveM needs GTA V Legacy. The separate FiveM for GTAV Enhanced client needs GTA V Enhanced and is still in Early Access.
- Download it only from fivem.net. FiveM installs to its own folder (by default %localappdata%\FiveM) and doesn't modify your GTA install.
- Make a Cfx.re account. It's free, and many servers use it (along with Discord) to identify you.
- FiveM and GTA Online can coexist. Per fivem.net, FiveM only contacts Rockstar's online services to validate your copy on first launch and doesn't modify your game files, so you can switch between the two. Rockstar acquired the Cfx.re team in 2023, and FiveM is now a Take-Two trademark.
- Read the server rules before you join. Every RP server has its own rulebook, often on their Discord. Breaking rules you didn't read still gets you kicked.
- Start on a non-whitelisted server to learn controls and RP basics. Apply to whitelisted servers once you're comfortable.
- Press F8 for the client console. Use it to connect directly to a server, check FPS and ping, and troubleshoot.
- Push-to-talk and proximity voice are the norm. Set your mic up before joining, and keep background noise out of voice chat.
- Stay in character. In serious RP servers, out-of-character talk belongs in the OOC channel or on Discord, not in voice.
Installing and First Launch
- Install GTA V (Legacy or Enhanced) through Steam, Epic, or Rockstar Launcher, and launch it once so it's fully updated.
- Download the matching client from fivem.net. There are separate downloads for Legacy and Enhanced.
- Run FiveM.exe, choose an empty folder (or accept the default), and let it download its files.
- Sign in with your Cfx.re account when asked, and link your Rockstar account on first launch so FiveM can confirm you own the game.
- Open the server browser, filter by region and language, and pick a server.
Minimum specs listed on fivem.net: Legacy lists Windows 10, 4 GB RAM, an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 (or AMD Phenom 9850), and a 1 GB GPU. The Enhanced client lists Windows 10, 8 GB RAM, an Intel Core i7-4770 (or AMD FX-9590), and a 4 GB GPU (GTX 1630 / RX 6400). Heavily modded RP servers need a lot more than minimum specs, so budget 16 GB+ RAM and an SSD for a smooth experience.
Finding a Server
Server type | What to expect | Good for
Public / non-whitelisted RP | Open to anyone, with light rules and a mix of serious and casual players | Learning RP, jobs, and controls
Whitelisted serious RP | Application (often through Discord), sometimes an interview, strict rules | Long-form character stories
Freeroam / PvP / drift / racing | Little or no RP, focused on gameplay | Quick fun, car culture, combat
Economy / job servers | Grinding jobs to buy houses, cars, and businesses | Players who like progression
Streamer-favorite servers | Popular with long queues, often paid priority | Watching and joining big communities
Choosing well:
- Filter by your language and region to keep ping low.
- Look at player counts and queue length. A 300-person queue at peak hours means long waits.
- Join the server's Discord before you play. Rules, applications, updates, and support all live there.
- Look out for pay-to-win stores. Cfx.re's platform rules limit what servers can sell, but quality varies. Donation perks should be cosmetic or convenience, not power.
- Favorite servers in the browser. To join directly, use F8 and type connect [server address].
Roleplay Etiquette and Terms
Most RP servers use the same vocabulary. Learn these before your first session.
Term | Meaning
IC / OOC | In Character / Out Of Character. IC is your character talking. OOC is you, the player
RDM | Random Deathmatch: attacking or killing someone with no RP reason or build-up
VDM | Vehicle Deathmatch: using a car as a weapon without RP justification
NLR | New Life Rule: after you're "killed", you forget the events that led to it and don't go back to that scene for a set time
Metagaming | Using info your character wouldn't know (from streams, Discord, or OOC chat) in character
Powergaming | Forcing outcomes on others, or doing things that are unrealistic or impossible to respond to
Fail RP | Acting in a way nobody would in that situation (for example, ignoring a gun pointed at you)
Value of Life (VoL / FearRP) | Your character should act like they want to live, so comply when you're clearly outgunned
Combat logging | Disconnecting to escape a situation. Almost always a bannable offense
Cop baiting | Deliberately provoking police for no RP purpose
Stream sniping | Watching someone's stream to find or target them in game
Etiquette that gets you accepted:
- Build a character, not a gamertag. Pick a believable name, a backstory, and a reason to be in the city.
- Give others something to play off. Talk before you shoot. Good RP creates scenes, not quick kills.
- Accept losses in character. Getting robbed, arrested, or "killed" is content. Arguing OOC in the middle of a scene ruins it for everyone.
- Take disputes to support. Clip the incident and file a report through the server's Discord or ticket system. Don't break character in voice to argue.
- Respect the scene. Don't drive through an active police scene or interrupt someone else's story unless your character has a reason to.
- Keep your mic clean. No music, no background TV, no mic spam.
Common Commands
Commands depend on the server's framework and scripts, so check the server's guide. These are the most common:
Chat and RP commands (server-dependent)
Command | Typical use
/me [action] | Describe a physical action your character takes ("/me reaches for their wallet")
/do [description] | Describe the environment or result ("/do The wallet is empty")
/ooc [message] or // | Out-of-character chat
/report [message] | Contact staff in-game
/e [emote] or /emotes | Play an emote or animation (common with emote menu scripts)
/911 or phone app | Call emergency services on many RP servers
Client console commands (F8, work everywhere)
Command | What it does
connect [address] | Join a server by IP:port or URL
disconnect | Leave the current server
quit | Close FiveM
cl_drawfps true | Show an FPS counter
cl_drawperf true | Show FPS, ping, packet loss, and CPU/GPU usage
profile_sfxVolume [0-10] | Set sound effects volume
profile_musicVolumeInMp [0-10] | Set music volume in multiplayer
bind [mapper] [input] [command] | Bind a key to a command
unbind [mapper] [input] | Remove a binding
Keybinds you'll commonly see
Controls vary by server, but most RP servers follow patterns like these:
Key (typical) | Action
T | Open chat
F8 | Client console
N (or server-set) | Push-to-talk
F1 / M / K | Phone, interaction menu, or vehicle menu (depends on the server)
Esc, then Settings, then Key Bindings, then FiveM | See and rebind the keys the server's scripts registered
Tip: many servers register their keybinds with FiveM's key mapping system. Check them under the FiveM section of GTA's keybind settings, and rebind them there instead of in the server's scripts.
Performance and Troubleshooting
- Clear the cache when a server fails to load or textures break. Close FiveM, open the FiveM application data folder, and delete the data\cache, data\server-cache, and data\server-cache-priv folders. Don't delete game-storage, or you'll redownload a lot.
- Antivirus conflicts: if FiveM won't start, allow it in your antivirus. The official docs suggest a support ticket for persistent AV blocks.
- Update GTA V first. Many launch errors come from an outdated game install.
- Performance: turn down extended distance scaling, grass, and shadows. Busy RP servers with custom cars and maps stress VRAM more than single-player GTA.
- Graphics mods and plugins: FiveM supports some client plugins, but servers can restrict them. Many RP servers forbid anything that gives an advantage (for example, removing foliage or night lighting). Read the rules.
- Never run cheats or mod menus. FiveM's anti-cheat and server anti-cheats issue bans, and some are global across the platform.
Running Your Own Server (Basics)
Step | What to do
1. Host | Rent from a FiveM-approved game host or a VPS, or self-host on a decent machine with good upload bandwidth
2. License key | Generate a free server license key on the Cfx.re Portal
3. FXServer + txAdmin | Install FXServer. txAdmin is the built-in web panel for setup, restarts, bans, and logs
4. Ports | Open the server port (default 30120, TCP and UDP)
5. Framework | Pick one: Qbox (modern, maintained, grew out of QBCore, often recommended for new servers in 2026), QBCore, or ESX
6. OneSync | Enable OneSync for modern sync and higher player counts
7. Resources | Add scripts one at a time, and test after each. Get them from the Cfx.re forums' Releases section or trusted developers
Owner tips:
- Start small. A stable server with 20 good scripts beats a laggy one with 200.
- Use the resmon developer command (with developer mode enabled) to find resource-heavy scripts.
- Write clear rules using the common terms above, and give staff a ticket system.
- Read Cfx.re's Platform License Agreement and monetization rules before selling anything. Breaking them can get the server delisted.
- Buy scripts only from reputable developers. Leaked or cracked scripts can contain backdoors.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Joining a whitelisted server without reading the rules, then failing the application or getting banned on day one.
- Using OOC knowledge in character (metagaming). This is the fastest way to lose a community's trust.
- Combat logging to avoid being arrested or robbed.
- Running around shooting on an RP server. That's RDM, and freeroam servers exist for it.
- Installing mod menus "just to try them". Bans can be permanent and platform-wide.
- Downloading FiveM from a third-party site. Use only fivem.net.
- Ignoring the server Discord. Announcements, rule updates, and unban appeals all happen there.
Advanced Tips
- Record clips (for example with your GPU's instant replay). Staff decide reports based on video, not memory.
- Develop your character over time. Jobs, relationships, and gradual change make better RP than a static "tough guy".
- Learn the server's economy before spending. Cars, houses, and businesses usually have upkeep.
- For police or EMS roleplay, apply to the department separately. It usually has its own training and standard procedures.
- Try both clients. FiveM for GTAV Enhanced looks better (it runs on Enhanced's modern renderer), but it's in Early Access and many servers still run Legacy.
- Try RedM too. Cfx.re also runs RedM for Red Dead Redemption 2 with the same client and browser setup.
FAQ
Is FiveM free? Yes. FiveM itself is free, but you need a legitimately owned copy of GTA V on PC. Some servers sell optional perks.
Will I get banned from GTA Online for using FiveM? Not for simply using FiveM. According to fivem.net, FiveM only contacts Rockstar's online services to validate your copy the first time you launch it, and it doesn't modify your game files. Cheating in either one is a different story.
Does FiveM work with GTA V Enhanced? Yes, through a separate client, FiveM for GTAV Enhanced, which is in Early Access. The regular FiveM client uses GTA V Legacy.
How do I join a server directly? Press F8 and type connect [server address], or search for the server in the browser and add it to your favorites.
What are NLR and RDM? NLR (New Life Rule) means you forget the events that led to your "death". RDM (Random Deathmatch) means killing someone without RP build-up. Both are covered in almost every server's rules.
Why does my game crash when joining a server? Update GTA V, clear the FiveM cache folders (not game-storage), check your antivirus, and make sure you're using the right client (Legacy or Enhanced) for that server.
Can I play FiveM on console? No. FiveM is PC only.
