How to go from your first bobber at Lone Star Lake to building balanced tackle, reading fish behavior, managing licenses and money, and competing in tournaments in Fishing Planet, the free-to-play fishing sim.

Researched September 2026 — current as of version 6.0.13 (July 30, 2026) and the Mighty Carp Tour 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

What's live right now (September 2026): The Mighty Carp Tour 2026 began with registration on September 7 and the first Qualifier on September 8. This year Qualifier 3 moves to the Dnipro River, Ukraine. The game turned 11 in August 2026 and has 27 waterways (14 rivers, 10 lakes, 3 ocean locations). The newest one is Skårland Fjord, Norway, added at Christmas 2025 together with the Valkyrie boat, electric rods and reels, and inventory sorting.

Quick Start

  • Start at Lone Star Lake, Texas. It's the free starter waterway (the official wiki lists it at level 2) with cheap licenses and forgiving panfish such as Bluegill, Green Sunfish and White Crappie. Level up here before you spend money travelling.
  • The line should be the weakest link. Every setup is rod + reel + line + terminal tackle. Build it so the line breaks before the rod or reel does. A snapped line costs a few credits. A snapped rod costs a lot more.
  • Always buy a license before you fish. Each waterway has its own license. A Basic license usually bans night fishing and boats, and may make you release certain trophy species. An Advanced license lifts those limits. Keeping a fish the license says to release gets you fined.
  • Time of day matters more than lure choice. Early morning and late evening are the strongest bite windows in summer. In cold weather, midday is better because the water is warmer. Skip dead hours by using the in-game time skip on the map.
  • Change one thing at a time. If nothing bites, change depth, then bait, then spot. Swapping everything at once teaches you nothing.
  • Do the Daily Missions and claim daily rewards. They're the steadiest early source of XP, Credits and Baitcoins.
  • Home Storage only opens on the Globe. At a waterway you only have your Backpack, so pack spare line, hooks, baits and a second setup before you travel.
  • Don't spend Baitcoins on basics. Credits (soft currency) cover licenses, bait and most early gear. Save Baitcoins (premium currency) for things you can't get with Credits.
  • Use the tackle compatibility info. Since 6.0.13, the Info button in your inventory shows which rod and reel types an item works with, and since 6.0.12 the Shop's "Setups" button (formerly "Rods") shows compatibility before you buy.
  • Keep your catch in the keepnet and sell it when you leave. Fish you keep are worth Credits and XP. Released fish still count for missions and achievements.

Currencies, Licenses and Progression

Thing | What it is | Tips

Credits | Main currency, earned by selling fish, missions and daily rewards | Pays for licenses, most gear, bait and travel

Baitcoins | Premium currency, earned a little from missions and events, or bought | Save them for premium items, Pond Passes and extra slots

XP / Level | Earned from catches and missions | Level unlocks new waterways and gear

Licenses | Per-waterway fishing permits (Basic or Advanced, for a set number of days) | Read the rules: night fishing, boat use, and mandatory release lists

Pond Pass | Lets you visit a waterway before you reach its level | Events and tournament registration often hand these out

Premium | Paid subscription | Boosts XP and Credit gains. Nice to have, not required

How waterways unlock: each waterway has a level requirement. As examples, the official wiki lists Lone Star Lake at level 2, Mudwater River (Missouri) at level 4 and Emerald Lake (New York) at level 8. The more exotic locations (the Amazon, the Maldives, Norway and so on) sit much higher. A Pond Pass, a tournament registration, or an event reward can take you somewhere early. For example, the August 2026 Anniversary Event gave out Pond Passes along a 27-mission route, and tournament registration opens up the tournament's waterways no matter your level.

License rules to watch: on some waterways the Basic license requires you to release trophy fish of certain species, while others make you keep certain invasive species. Mudwater River's Basic license, for instance, requires you to keep Black Bullhead and Bowfin. The rules are shown in the Licenses screen, which was redesigned in 6.0.13 to be easier to read. Check it before your first cast at any new waterway.

Building a Balanced Tackle Setup

This is the part that trips up most new players. From the official wiki's balanced-setup guide:

  • Reel vs. line: the reel's max drag should be higher than the line's test (breaking strength).
  • Line vs. rod: the line's test should be below the rod's maximum line weight.
  • Aim for the strongest line the rod accepts, as long as the reel can handle it.
  • Drag math: max drag divided by the number of drag settings equals the drag added per notch. A reel with 8 kg max drag and 8 settings adds 1 kg per notch.
  • Set drag slightly under line test. The wiki suggests leaving roughly a 0.5 kg buffer below the line's test so the reel gives line before the line snaps.

Worked example from the wiki: a JigWinner 270 rod (1.5–4 kg line weight) with a Prima 3500 reel (5 kg max drag, 8 settings, so 0.625 kg per notch) and 0.28 mm fluorocarbon line (4.5 kg test), with the drag on setting 6 (3.75 kg). The line is slightly over the rod's rating here, but because the drag slips at 3.75 kg, the rod still keeps a 0.25 kg margin. That's why a correctly set drag matters more than any single rating.

Setup types

Technique | Used for | Key gear

Float | Panfish, perch, crappie, carp, catfish | Float rod, float, hook, bait (worms, maggots, corn, bread and so on)

Spinning / lure | Bass, pike, walleye, trout | Spinning or casting rod, lures (spoons, spinners, jigs, crankbaits, soft plastics)

Bottom / feeder / carp | Carp, bream, catfish, big bottom feeders | Bottom or feeder rod, sinker or feeder, rod stand, bite alarm

Trolling | Ocean and big predator fishing | Boat with rod holders, trolling lures

Saltwater / big game | Sharks, tuna, marlin, halibut (ocean and Norway) | Heavy or electric rods and reels, yachts, and the Valkyrie boat's crane in Norway

Float Fishing Fundamentals

  • Find the depth first. Set the leader to its maximum (99 in / 2.5 m), cast, and watch the float. Shorten it step by step (the wiki suggests about 5 in at a time) until the float sits at roughly a 45-degree angle. That means your bait is just off the bottom.
  • Match bait to depth. Surface baits (dragonflies, frogs) don't belong on long leaders, and bottom baits (crawfish) don't belong on short ones.
  • Match bait to hook size. A big bait on a tiny hook, or the reverse, kills your bite rate.
  • Pick the right float:
  • Slim: short casts and baits that don't move much.
  • Oval: the all-rounder.
  • Chubby: long casts.
  • Sport: finesse fishing.
  • Ball bobber: catfish and big fish.
  • Strike on a clear bite. Wait for the float to go under or run to the side, not for a nibble.

Lure Fishing Fundamentals

  • Carry variety. No lure is best everywhere. Small spoons, spinners and jigs are good for finding active fish, and then you can specialize.
  • Color rules of thumb (from the official wiki):
  • Bright lures on sunny days, darker lures under clouds.
  • Silver in clear water and sun, gold in murky or overcast conditions.
  • Red fades quickly with depth, while blue and green stay visible longer.
  • Vary retrieve speed and depth. Try straight retrieves, stop-and-go, and twitching. If a species won't hit one retrieve, it may hit another.
  • Soft plastics: contrasting colors (a dark head with a fluorescent tail) work well as searching baits.

Fighting a Fish

  • Watch the line tension indicator. If tension stays in the red too long, the line or leader snaps.
  • Let the drag work. With the drag set correctly, a big fish pulls line off the reel instead of breaking it. Don't wind hard against a fish that's taking line.
  • Pump and reel. Lift the rod to pull the fish in, then reel down as you lower it. Keep the rod angle so pressure stays steady.
  • Wear down big fish. Carp, catfish, sharks and halibut need patience. Rushing them is the most common way to lose a trophy.

Waterway Primer

Region | Waterways (per the official wiki)

USA / Canada | Lone Star Lake (TX), Mudwater River (MO), Emerald Lake (NY), Rocky Lake (CO), Neherrin River (NC), Falcon Lake (OR), Everglades (FL), White Moose Lake (AB), Quanchkin Lake (LA), Saint-Croix Lake (MI), San Joaquin Delta (CA), Kaniq Creek (AK), Blue Crab Island (MS)

South America | Maku-Maku Lake (Peru), Marron River (Bolivia), Amazonian Maze (Brazil)

Europe | Lesni Vila Fishery (Czech Rep.), Ghent-Terneuzen Canal (Netherlands), Tiber River (Italy), Sander Baggersee (Germany), Dnipro River (Ukraine), Weeping Willow Fishery (UK), Creuse River (France), Skårland Fjord (Norway)

Africa / Asia | Congo River, Selenge River (Mongolia), Kaiji No Ri (Japan), Noomaa Kuda Atholhu (Maldives)

Beginner route: Lone Star Lake, then Mudwater River, then Emerald Lake, then branch out as your level allows. Each starting point on a waterway suits different fish. At Lone Star, the swampy areas hold Spotted Bass and Bluegill, while the deeper water near the dam holds Smallmouth Buffalo and Channel Catfish.

Boats and Transport

  • Kayaks (manual and pedal) are the cheapest way to reach water you can't cast to from shore.
  • Motor boats and bass boats cover bigger lakes quickly. Your license must allow boat fishing, which usually means Advanced.
  • Ocean yachts carry 2–5 players, have rod holders for trolling and fish storage, and use the Fish Finder 360.
  • Valkyrie (Norway) has a crane for hauling giant fish aboard.

Events and Competitions (2026)

  • Tournaments run through Sports, then Tournament. Registration gives you access to the featured waterways regardless of level, and you only pay entry in Credits. Read the Competitive Activity Rules first.
  • Recent 2026 events:
  • Independence Treasure Hunt + Canada Day (ended July 6).
  • Anniversary Cup (Salmon, with Premium time as top prizes).
  • Anniversary Event (27 missions across every waterway).
  • Mighty Carp Tour 2026 (September).
  • Twitch Drops campaigns come around regularly. Link your account ahead of time.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Mismatched tackle. A 10 kg line on a rod rated for 4 kg means the rod breaks first. Check the ratings every time.
  • Fishing without the right license, or keeping a species the Basic license makes you release.
  • Leaving Home Storage without spares. You can't reach it from the waterway.
  • Fishing midday in summer heat and deciding the waterway "has no fish."
  • Spending Baitcoins on things Credits can buy.
  • Changing depth, bait, spot and lure all at once when you get no bites.
  • Horsing a big fish in with the drag cranked all the way up.

Advanced Tips

  • Two or three rods on stands (bottom or float) with bite alarms multiply your chances in carp and catfish fishing. Watch them all.
  • Track conditions. Species behavior depends on season, water temperature, weather, wind, current, time of day and bottom type. Overcast days slow down non-predators but keep predators like pike active.
  • Use Tackle Templates so you can rebuild a proven setup in one click. The Player Profile now shows how many template and recipe slots you have.
  • Marker Buoys let you come back to productive spots. Navigation Buoys help on big water.
  • Fish for trophies and uniques once your gear can handle them. They pay far more and fill the Trophy Room in the Angler's House.
  • Leaderboards reward weekly, monthly and yearly. Pick a narrow category (a species or waterway) where you can place.

FAQ

Is Fishing Planet free? Yes. It's free-to-play on Steam, Epic, consoles and mobile. DLC packs and Premium are optional.

Can I reset my progress or move it to another account? No. The official support page says account progress can't be reset and progress can't be transferred between accounts.

Is there cross-play? Only between certain platform pairs: Steam with Epic, Android with Apple, and Xbox with the Windows (UWP) version.

Why does my line keep snapping? Your drag is set above the line's test, or the line is stronger than the rod's rating. Rebalance as described above and keep the tension out of the red.

How do I get to higher-level waterways early? Use a Pond Pass from events or missions, or register for a tournament held there.

Where's my Home Storage? Only on the Globe (the world map). At a waterway you see just your Backpack.

What's the best place to start? Lone Star Lake, Texas. It's cheap to fish, full of easy species, and designed for new players.
