Text version of this guide
This guide covers Valve's original GoldSrc Day of Defeat: getting it running on a modern PC, the classes and weapons for every team, how the flag and objective maps work, bots for offline play, and the habits that win games on the community servers that still run it.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the last official Steam build (Valve's shared Half-Life engine update, October 2019). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Status: Day of Defeat is a 2003 Valve release (it started as a Half-Life mod in 1999). Valve hasn't added content in years. Its last Steam news posts are engine and security fixes: an August 2018 engine patch, and an October 2019 note that a Half-Life update affected it through shared files. Official matchmaking never existed. You play on community servers from the in-game server browser, or offline with bots. The Source-engine remake, Day of Defeat: Source (2005), is a separate game.
Quick Start
- Use the server browser (Find Servers), not "quick play". Sort by ping and player count. Busy servers tend to run the stock maps (dod_anzio, dod_avalanche, dod_flash, dod_donner) or custom rotations.
- You can't shoot well while moving. Accuracy falls apart when you run, especially with bolt-actions and machine guns. Stop, then shoot.
- Watch your stamina. Sprinting and jumping drain it, and an exhausted soldier is slow and easy to hit. Don't sprint into a fight you might need to escape from.
- Machine guns and the BAR need to be deployed. Go prone, or deploy on a sandbag or window ledge, before you hold down fire. Hip-fire with an MG is mostly wasted ammo.
- Flags win rounds, not kills. Most maps are Territorial Control. Some flags need more than one player standing on them to capture. Bring a friend.
- Pick a class your team is missing. Classes have limits on many servers. A team of five snipers and no rifleman pushing the flag will lose.
- Headshots matter most with rifles. A Garand, K98k or Enfield to the head is the best way to win fights at medium range.
- Grenades clear corners. Throw them into rooms and flag areas before you go in, especially on narrow maps like dod_flash and dod_caen.
- Want to play solo? Install Sturmbot (see below) and you can play every map against AI.
Controls and Settings
Everything can be rebound under Options > Keyboard. Check these bindings first, because the defaults are easy to miss:
Action | Why it matters
Prone | Makes you steadier and a smaller target. MG classes need it to deploy anywhere without cover
Deploy / secondary fire | Deploys a machine gun or BAR bipod on cover. On some rifles it's the bayonet or rifle-butt melee
Sprint | Uses stamina. Let go of it before you meet the enemy
Drop weapon | Leaves your gun on the ground. Handy for giving a teammate a better weapon
Voice commands | Quick radio calls such as "Move up", "Need backup" and "Enemy spotted". This is how pub teams coordinate
Scoreboard / objectives | Shows which flags each team holds
Settings worth changing on a modern PC:
- Video mode: OpenGL is the standard renderer. Widescreen resolutions are selectable after Valve's later engine updates.
- FOV: GoldSrc games use a fixed field of view. Most players leave it alone.
- Detail textures: A 2013 beta update turned these on for maps that support them. Leave them on unless you're running a very old machine.
- Raw input: Turn on raw mouse input in Options if you have it, so Windows acceleration doesn't mess up your aim.
- Linux: Valve released Linux versions of both Day of Defeat games in March 2013, together with the move to SteamPipe.
Teams and Classes
There are two sides. Allies are usually the US Army, but the British replace them on certain maps. The British aren't a third team. Axis are the German Wehrmacht. Some maps swap regular infantry for Paratroopers, whose loadouts are similar. The Axis paratroopers carry FG42 variants.
US (Allies)
Class | Primary weapon | Role
Rifleman | M1 Garand | All-rounder. Fast semi-auto follow-up shots
Staff Sergeant | M1 Carbine | Light semi-auto for close assaults
Master Sergeant | M1A1 Thompson | SMG for rushing flags and clearing buildings
Sergeant | M3A1 "Grease Gun" | SMG, assault-focused
Sniper | Springfield (scoped) | Long-range picks. Covers lanes into flags
Support Infantry | Browning Automatic Rifle (BAR) | Automatic rifle that can deploy its bipod
Machine Gunner | .30 cal Browning | Suppresses and holds lanes. Must deploy
Rocket Infantry | Bazooka | Blows up objectives and vehicles on maps that have them
Axis (Germany)
Class | Primary weapon | Role
Grenadier | Karabiner 98k (bayonet) | Bolt-action. Wins duels with one-shot headshots
Stosstruppe | Gewehr/Karabiner 43 | Semi-auto rifle for support at range
Unteroffizier | MP40 | SMG for close quarters
Sturmtruppe | StG 44 | The most flexible Axis gun. Works at almost any range
Scharfschütze | Scoped K98k | Sniper
MG34-Schütze | MG34 | Machine gunner
MG42-Schütze | MG42 | Very high rate of fire. Holds whole streets when deployed
Rocket Infantry | Panzerschreck | Anti-objective and anti-vehicle
British (replace the US on some maps)
Class | Primary weapon | Role
Rifleman | Lee-Enfield (bayonet) | Bolt-action all-rounder
Sergeant Major | Sten Mk II | SMG
Marksman | Enfield No. 4 (T) | Sniper
Gunner | Bren LMG | Light machine gun. Deploy it
Rocket Infantry | PIAT | Anti-objective
Picking a class:
- New players: Start with the Rifleman/Grenadier or the Thompson/MP40. You'll learn the maps and the one-shot-kill rhythm quickly.
- Holding a flag: A deployed MG42, .30 cal or Bren covering the main approach stops a push cold. So does a BAR on sandbags.
- Taking a flag: SMGs and the StG 44, supported by grenades, clear the capture zone. A rifleman watching the long angle keeps them alive.
- Detonation maps: Someone has to carry explosives or use a rocket class. Check the objective text when the round starts.
Game Modes and Maps
Day of Defeat maps use one of two objective styles:
- Territorial Control: Capture and hold flags. You win when your team owns all of them, or meets the map's condition before the timer ends. Some flags need several players standing on them to capture.
- Detonation: One side plants explosives on targets and the other side defends.

How to approach a map:
- Middle flags decide the round. On five-flag maps, whoever holds the centre flag usually wins. Take it early and put an MG on it.
- Learn the lanes. Every map has a few long sightlines, usually streets or fields, where snipers and MGs dominate. It also has side routes through houses. Use the side routes when the long lanes are covered.
- Flank flags. A flag far behind the enemy's attack can be taken quietly while they're busy elsewhere, and that splits their team.
Combat Fundamentals
Stop to shoot. Moving makes your shots less accurate. The best players move from cover to cover, stop, fire, and move again. If someone is sprinting toward you, you have the advantage as long as you're standing still.
Deploy your machine gun. Deployed MGs are deadly and very accurate. Un-deployed they're almost useless. Look for sandbags, window ledges and low walls, or go prone. Reload before the enemy pushes, because MG reloads are long.
Bolt-action rhythm. With a K98k or Lee-Enfield, aim for the head, fire, then get back behind cover while you work the bolt. Don't stand in the open cycling it.
Grenades. Use them on corners, doorways and anyone sitting on a flag. Enemy grenades that land near you can be thrown back if you're quick. Cooking grenades takes practice.
Melee. Bayonets and rifle butts kill up close. Knives and spades are your last resort.
Stamina. Save it for crossing open ground. Don't jump over and over in a fight. That doesn't dodge anything in GoldSrc DoD, and it throws off your aim.
Playing Offline with Bots (Sturmbot)
Day of Defeat has no built-in bots. The community-standard fix is Sturmbot:
- Download the Steam package of Sturmbot from its website. Use the latest version.
- Unzip it and run the installer, which points itself at your Steam DoD folder.
- Start the game and go to Options > Keyboard. Bind a key to "Sturmbot main menu".
- Start a new game on any map. Press your key to add or remove bots and change their settings.
- Stick to the official maps. Bots can lag on custom maps they don't have waypoints for.
Bots are good for learning maps, practising deployed-MG angles and trying classes before you join a real server.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Running and gunning. It works in Counter-Strike-style games, not here. Stop before you fire.
- Firing an MG from the hip. Deploy first, every time.
- Everyone playing sniper. A sniper can't take a flag. One per team is plenty, two on long maps.
- Ignoring the flag count. Check the scoreboard. If you hold three of five, defend. Don't wander off.
- Capturing alone when you need two. Some flags won't move with one player on them. Call for support first.
- Sprinting into corners. You arrive with no stamina and bad aim. Walk the last few metres.
- Reloading in the open. Get into cover first. Long reloads (MG42, .30 cal, Bren) get people killed.
Advanced Tips
- Spawn-timing: Respawns come in waves on most servers. Right after the enemy wave dies is the best moment to capture, because nobody is coming back yet.
- Pre-aim chokepoints. Enemies come from the same few doorways. Aim at head height on those doorways instead of scanning around.
- MG crossfires. Two deployed MGs covering one lane from different angles make that lane almost impossible to cross. Coordinate with voice commands.
- Rocket classes on Territorial maps: They're weak in straight fights, but on maps with destructible objectives or tanks (such as dod_zalec) they're essential.
- Weapon pickups: Dead players drop their guns. A Grenadier who picks up an StG 44 or MG gets more options.
- Configs: The community shares autoexec.cfg settings for binds, network rates and crosshair. The Steam guide "Dod configs" is a good start. Keep network changes modest, because some servers enforce rates.
- Old-school presentation: A community guide restores the original WON-era menus, if you want the 2003 look.
FAQ
Is Day of Defeat still playable online in 2026? Yes, on community-run servers from the in-game browser. The population is small, and busy servers depend on the time of day and region. Valve's last Steam posts are maintenance updates from 2017–2019.
Is Day of Defeat the same as Day of Defeat: Source? No. Day of Defeat (2003) runs on GoldSrc. Day of Defeat: Source (2005) is a Source-engine remake with new maps, different classes and physics. They're sold separately on Steam.
How do I play against bots? Install Sturmbot (Steam package), bind the Sturmbot menu key in Options > Keyboard, then add bots from that menu in a local game.
Why do the British show up instead of the US? Some maps, such as dod_caen and dod_flash, are British vs Axis. The British replace the US side on those maps. They're not a separate team.
Which class is best for beginners? Rifleman or Grenadier teaches you the maps and headshot timing. The Thompson or MP40 is easier in close-quarters maps.
Does it run on Linux or Steam Deck? Valve released an official Linux version in March 2013, alongside the SteamPipe update.
