A player's guide to Catan Universe on PC: what is free and what you have to buy, how the suns and seasons work, the core Catan rules the app enforces, opening placement and trading strategy, and tips for the expansions and ranked seasons.

Researched September 2026 — current as of Patch 2.7.5 (July 2026) and the Seafarers Jester Season that began July 28, 2026. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Quick Start

  • The app is free; the full game is not. Free players get the base game in 3-player online matches, the "Arrival on Catan" tutorial challenges, and the introductory card game. The full base game, Cities & Knights, Seafarers, the scenario pack, Rise of the Inkas, and the full card game are in-app purchases.
  • Do "Arrival on Catan" first. It teaches the rules and earns red Catan suns, which you spend to play against the computer.
  • Your yellow suns recharge on their own. They gate free play; when they run out, wait or buy.
  • Make one Catan Universe account. The same login works across desktop and mobile, so purchases and progress follow you.
  • Opening placement wins more games than anything else. Prioritize numbers 6, 8, 5, 9 and a spread of resources.
  • Cities are worth more than they look. A city doubles a spot's output and counts as 2 victory points.
  • Ranked seasons need Player Level 5 plus a participation fee, but you do not need to own Seafarers to play the Seafarers season.
  • Expect some rough edges. Steam reviews are Mixed overall (and Mostly Negative for the last 30 days as of September 2026), mostly over connection and matchmaking bugs. The 2.7.x patches target many of these; restart the client if you get stuck reconnecting.

What's Free vs. Paid

Content | Free? | Notes

Base game, 3-player online matches vs humans | Yes | Uses yellow suns, which recharge

Arrival on Catan (challenge/tutorial) | Yes | Earns red suns for AI games

Catan – The Duel intro game (card game) | Yes | Against a human player

Single-player vs AI (card game) | Unlocked by mastering the free Arrival on Catan | Per the store description

Full base game (up to 6 players, all modes) | Paid | Unlock in the in-game shop

Cities & Knights | Paid | Up to 6 players

Seafarers | Paid | Up to 6 players

Scenario pack: Enchanted Land and The Great Canal | Paid | Extra scenarios

Rise of the Inkas | Paid | Separate game edition

Full card game (three theme sets) | Paid | Play vs friends, others, or AI

Season participation | Fee required | Needs Player Level 5

Buying advice: the free base game already lets you play with two friends (3 players max). If your group is bigger, buy the full base game first. Add Seafarers or Cities & Knights once your group wants variety. Cities & Knights is the deepest expansion; Seafarers is the easier step up.

Core Rules the App Enforces

If you already know tabletop Catan, skip to strategy. Otherwise, here is what matters.

Resources and terrain

Terrain | Resource

Hills | Brick

Forest | Lumber

Pasture | Wool

Fields | Grain

Mountains | Ore

Desert | Nothing (starting spot of the robber)

At the start of each turn, the active player rolls two dice. Every hex with that number produces its resource for each adjacent settlement (1) or city (2).

Building costs

Build | Cost | Points

Road | 1 Brick, 1 Lumber | 0 (counts toward Longest Road)

Settlement | 1 Brick, 1 Lumber, 1 Wool, 1 Grain | 1

City (upgrade) | 2 Grain, 3 Ore | 2 total

Development card | 1 Ore, 1 Wool, 1 Grain | Varies

Scoring and special cards

  • Win at 10 victory points in the standard base game.
  • Longest Road (at least 5 connected road segments, longer than anyone else's): 2 points.
  • Largest Army (at least 3 played Knight cards, more than anyone else): 2 points.
  • Development cards: Knights (move the robber and steal), progress cards (Road Building, Year of Plenty, Monopoly), and Victory Point cards.

The robber and the 7

  • Rolling a 7 produces nothing. Anyone holding more than 7 cards discards half (rounded down).
  • The roller moves the robber to a hex, blocking its production, and steals one random card from a player next to it.

Trading

  • Trade with other players on your turn.
  • Bank trade: 4 of one resource for 1 of any other.
  • Harbors: a generic harbor gives 3:1; a specific harbor gives 2:1 for its resource. You need a settlement or city on the harbor to use it.

Opening Placement

Your two starting settlements shape the whole game.

Count the pips. The dots under each number show how often it rolls. 6 and 8 are the most common, then 5 and 9, then 4 and 10, then 3 and 11. 2 and 12 are rare.

Rules of thumb:

  • Aim for about 10 or more total pips across your first settlement, ideally touching three productive hexes.
  • Do not put both settlements on the same number. Diversify numbers so you get something on more rolls.
  • Get access to both Brick and Lumber early if you plan to expand, or Ore and Grain if you plan to build cities.
  • The second settlement (placed in reverse order) also gives you its adjacent resources immediately. Use it to fill gaps.
  • Consider a spot next to a harbor that matches a resource you will produce a lot of.

Two broad strategies:

Strategy | Key resources | Plan

Expansion (road/settlement) | Brick, Lumber, Wool, Grain | Build roads and settlements fast, fight for Longest Road

Cities and cards | Ore, Grain, Wool | Upgrade to cities early, buy development cards, aim for Largest Army

Midgame Strategy

  • Upgrade your best spot to a city first. Doubling production on your highest-pip location compounds all game.
  • Keep your hand under 8 cards. Spend or trade before passing the turn to dodge the 7 discard.
  • Block before you're blocked. If an opponent is heading toward a key open intersection, build a road there first. Settlements cannot be placed within one space of another settlement.
  • Trade with the player who is losing. Helping the leader wins them the game.
  • Watch the leader's hidden points. Development cards can hide Victory Points. Someone at 8 visible points with several unplayed cards may be closer than they look.
  • Robber targeting: block the leader's best hex, not the one that just robbed you.

Expansions and Editions

Seafarers

Adds sea tiles and ships. Ships work like roads over water and let you reach other islands. The April 2026 Jester season ran exclusively on Heading for New Shores, The Four Islands, Through the Desert, and Drought; the July 2026 Seafarers Jester Season uses community-voted scenarios instead.

Tips:

  • Early ship-building to a new island is often worth it; scenarios commonly reward settling new islands.
  • Ships can be repositioned under certain rules, so an open ship at the end of a line is flexible.

Cities & Knights

The deepest expansion. It adds commodities from cities (paper, cloth, coin), city improvements, knights that you activate and upgrade, progress cards in place of development cards, a barbarian ship that attacks Catan, and metropolises. Games usually go to more points (13 in the standard rules).

Tips:

  • Cities matter even more because only cities produce commodities.
  • Keep enough active knights to defend against the barbarians. Losing cities to them is brutal.
  • Race toward a metropolis in the track where you have the most commodity income.

Scenario pack

Contains Enchanted Land and The Great Canal.

Rise of the Inkas

A separate edition where settlements decline over time and the jungle reclaims them, letting opponents build over old sites. Plan for the long game: new spots will open up.

Catan – The Duel (card game)

The 2-player card game. The free introductory game teaches it; the full version adds three theme sets.

Online Play, Matchmaking, and Seasons

Matchmaking (Patch 2.7.0, February 2026): automatic matchmaking now supports 3 to 6 player matches, and a Balanced Dice Mode in auto matches reduces the extreme dice streaks players had complained about.

Custom matches: a new custom lobby arrived in 2.7.0. Since 2.7.2 (March 2026), players who own an expansion can use the randomized scenario option in custom matches.

Patch 2.7.5 (July 2026) fixed a batch of season and player-count bugs:

  • a new season-only matchmaking filter, so season searches only match season players, and those games always count toward Elo;
  • fixes for searches that landed in the wrong player count (for example, a 3-player search ending up in a 4- or 6-player game);
  • map filtering so players do not land on maps sized for a different player count.

Seasons: ranked seasons run on a fixed set of scenarios (season queues only place you in that season's scenarios).

  • You need Player Level 5 and a participation fee.
  • You play 3 placement matches to set your rank.
  • There are 3 reward tiers. The Seafarers Jester Season (from July 28, 2026) rewards include the next piece of the Jester outfit, Jester board pieces, and a Piglet pet avatar.
  • In the earlier Jester season (April 2026), completing the 3 placement matches guaranteed the Jester Hat at season end.
  • You do not need to own Seafarers to play a Seafarers season.

Reconnect loop fix: if you get stuck on a "connecting…" pop-up, use the X next to it (added in 2.7.2) to leave that match. If a loading screen persists, fully restart the client.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Placing both settlements on low numbers. Pip count first, resource variety second.
  • Ignoring Ore and Grain. Without them you cannot build cities or buy cards.
  • Sitting on a big hand. The next 7 will cost you half of it.
  • Trading with the leader. Every trade helps two players; make sure one of them is not about to win.
  • Buying expansions before the base game. Free play caps the base game at 3 players; unlock the full base game first if your group is bigger or wants the full set of modes.
  • Forgetting hidden VP cards. Count the leader's unplayed development cards.
  • Queuing seasons at Level 4. You need Player Level 5.

Advanced Tips

  • Plan your second settlement around your first. Pick the second to cover the resources the first lacks, especially if it lets you use a 2:1 harbor.
  • Build toward contested spots early. The best open intersections go fast in 4 to 6 player games.
  • Longest Road is a tempo play. It is 2 points, but it can change hands. Make your road hard to cut by building through your own settlements.
  • Development cards scale with player count. In 5 to 6 player games, knights are a good way to fight the robber, which will visit you often.
  • Use Balanced Dice to your advantage. In auto matches with Balanced Dice, extreme streaks are less likely, so long droughts on your numbers should be less common. Plan around steady production rather than hoping for a hot streak.
  • Custom matches with friends. Use the randomized scenario option (with the matching expansion) to keep games fresh.
