A full guide to the original 2011 Modern Warfare 3 on PC: the campaign and Veteran tips, Spec Ops and Survival, and the multiplayer systems (Strike Packages, weapon proficiencies, perks and maps), plus what to know about playing a 2011 PC shooter safely in 2026.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the final Steam build of MW3 (2011). The game is still sold on Steam and receives no new content. Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Not to be confused with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III (2023). This guide covers the 2011 Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer game (Steam app 42680), which concludes the original Modern Warfare trilogy with Price, Soap, Yuri and Makarov.
Quick Start
- Campaign first. It's short (a single evening or two) and closes out the story from Call of Duty 4 and Modern Warfare 2.
- Pick your Strike Package on purpose. Assault streaks reset on death, Support streaks carry over through deaths, and Specialist gives extra perks for kills.
- Level your weapons. Each gun ranks up on its own and unlocks attachments, camos and one Proficiency (for example Kick for less recoil, Focus for less flinch). Only one proficiency can be equipped per primary.
- Kill Confirmed is the best mode for learning. Picking up dog tags rewards smart play over camping.
- Survival is the best co-op mode. It's wave-based for one or two players, and money buys weapons, equipment and air support between waves.
- Spec Ops missions have 48 stars in total. There are 16 missions with 3 stars each. Veteran-difficulty stars are the hard part.
- Be careful in public multiplayer. Older CoD PC titles have a history of exploits and cheaters. See the security section before you jump in.
- Bind a separate key for Hold Breath and Knife. Default binds work, but a comfortable melee key matters a lot in close-range maps.
Campaign
Mission list
The campaign runs in three acts. Missions in order, with the objective from each mission's Steam achievement:
# | Mission | Objective
1 | Black Tuesday | Destroy the jamming tower
2 | Hunter Killer | Take back New York Harbor
3 | Persona Non Grata | Escape the mountain safe house
4 | Turbulence | Defend the Russian President
5 | Back on the Grid | Infiltrate the village
6 | Mind the Gap | Make it to Westminster
7 | Goalpost | Save the US Vice President
8 | Return to Sender | Assault the shipping company
9 | Bag and Drag | Track down Volk
10 | Iron Lady | Escape Paris with Volk
11 | Eye of the Storm | Reach the church
12 | Blood Brothers | Escape the city
13 | Stronghold | Discover Makarov's next move
14 | Scorched Earth | Find the girl
15 | Down the Rabbit Hole | Rescue the Russian President
16 | Dust to Dust | The finale
Finishing on Hardened or Veteran unlocks The Best of the Best; The Big Apple asks for Black Tuesday and Hunter Killer on Veteran.
Veteran tips
- Veteran is all about cover and patience. Enemies kill you in a few hits and grenades are everywhere. Advance in short bursts, clear angles one at a time, and throw grenades back.
- Use the checkpoint rhythm. Push to the next checkpoint, then play slowly. Rushing past a checkpoint trigger with low health is the most common way runs fall apart.
- Pick up enemy weapons. Your starting loadout often runs dry. Swap to what the enemy drops so ammo is plentiful.
- Turret and vehicle sections (e.g. Hunter Killer's submarine sequence, Goalpost's beach) have safer lines. Stay behind cover and let allies draw fire.
- Flashbangs and smoke are more valuable on Veteran than frags. Blind, then push.
- Enemies respawn until you move forward. If enemies keep coming, you need to push, not hold.
Intel
There are 46 Intel laptops across the campaign. Several are tucked into side rooms along the critical path. Use Mission Select to replay and pick up any you missed. Intel counts toward achievements: Informant at 22 and Scout Leader at all 46.
Spec Ops
Missions
There are 16 Spec Ops missions, each with up to 3 stars (48 in total). Stars are earned by clearing on higher difficulties. Many are much easier with a partner in co-op.
Survival
- Solo or two-player co-op, on multiplayer maps.
- Waves escalate: infantry, dogs, suicide bombers, chemical attackers, attack helicopters and Juggernauts.
- Money buys from three armories: Weapon Armory (guns, attachments, ammo), Equipment Armory (armour, grenades, claymores, sentry guns and similar) and Air Support Armory (support calls, allies and strikes).
- Priorities: body armour and a solid weapon early. Self-revive and sentries once the waves get tough. Save for air support before Juggernaut waves.
- Pick the right map. Smaller maps with clear chokepoints are more forgiving for high-wave runs.
Multiplayer Systems
Strike Packages
Package | How it works | Good for
Assault | Classic killstreaks. Your streak resets when you die | Confident slayers
Support | Your streak keeps going through deaths | Objective players and newer players; team-utility rewards
Specialist | Earn an extra perk every two kills; lose them on death. A high streak gives you every perk | Aggressive players who want a stacked kit
Common rewards: Assault includes the UAV, Care Package, Predator Missile, Sentry Gun, Attack Helicopter, Reaper, AC-130, Juggernaut and Osprey Gunner. Support includes the UAV, Counter-UAV, Ballistic Vests, SAM Turret, Recon Drone, Advanced UAV, Stealth Bomber and EMP.
Perks
Tier 1 | Tier 2 | Tier 3
Recon | Quickdraw | Marksman
Sleight of Hand | Blast Shield | Stalker
Blind Eye | Hardline | SitRep
Extreme Conditioning | Assassin | Steady Aim
Scavenger | Overkill | Dead Silence
Each perk has a Pro version you unlock by completing its challenge.
Weapon proficiency
Guns earn XP and rank up separately from your player level. Ranks unlock attachments, camos, reticles and Proficiencies, such as Kick (less recoil when aiming), Focus (less flinch when hit) and Attachments (equip two attachments). You can only use one proficiency per weapon, so match it to the gun's weakness.
Modes worth knowing
- Team Deathmatch and Free-for-All: the classics.
- Kill Confirmed: kills only count once you grab the enemy's dog tags, and teammates can deny tags.
- Team Defender: grab the dropped flag. Kills made by your flag carrier's team count double.
- Domination, Search and Destroy, Headquarters, Sabotage and more.
Launch maps
Arkaden, Bakaara, Bootleg, Carbon, Dome, Downturn, Fallen, Hardhat, Interchange, Lockdown, Mission, Outpost, Resistance, Seatown, Underground and Village. More maps came through the Content Collection DLCs (released as Content Collections #1–#4), which you have to own to join matches on those maps.
Loadout advice
- Assault rifles are the safe pick. The ACR 6.8, Type 95 and MK14 are popular for accuracy and damage.
- SMGs for close-quarters maps like Dome and Hardhat. The MP7 and PP90M1 are strong.
- Hybrid sights let you switch between magnified and non-magnified aiming. Great on large maps like Village and Outpost.
- Specialist package + Sleight of Hand, Hardline and Assassin is a fun aggressive setup.
Playing Safely and Finding Games in 2026
- Official servers and matchmaking are old and populations are small and uneven. Expect quiet lobbies, cheaters, or both.
- Security: remote-code-execution exploits have been reported in older CoD PC titles over the years, and Activision has taken servers offline for some older games in response. There's no confirmation that MW3 (2011) is currently affected, but treat public multiplayer with care: keep Windows and your antivirus updated, and avoid joining random modded servers.
- Community clients: many players use Plutonium, a community client that supports MW3 (IW5) multiplayer with dedicated servers, anti-cheat and mod support. It needs a legitimate copy of the game. It isn't official, so you use it at your own discretion.
- The campaign and offline Spec Ops/Survival are unaffected by any of this.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Using the Assault package while you learn. Support keeps your streaks going and still rewards objective play.
- Running every perk with no plan. Blind Eye and Assassin counter enemy streaks and UAVs. Pick perks for the problem you have.
- Ignoring weapon proficiencies. Kick on a high-recoil gun is a big improvement.
- Sprinting into Veteran fights. Slow down, clear angles and use grenades.
- Forgetting Intel. It's much faster to grab it the first time than to replay missions later.
- Joining random public MP servers without precautions (see above).
Advanced Tips
- Blind Eye plus a launcher to shoot down air streaks is a huge team contribution. Use the SMAW or Stinger.
- Pre-aim common routes on three-lane maps (Seatown, Arkaden). MW3's fast time-to-kill rewards whoever sees the other player first.
- Survival money: don't overbuy early. Sentries and self-revives are worth more than weapon upgrades at mid waves.
- Two-player Spec Ops: assign roles (one on overwatch, one pushing) for the hardest Veteran stars.
- Camo grinding: play Kill Confirmed and Domination for steady XP and headshot chances.
