Text version of this guide
This covers Blade & Sorcery's physics combat, magic and imbuing, Crystal Hunt progression, the Byeth content updates, and how to stay effective (and comfortable) in VR.
Researched September 2026 — current as of 1.3.1 (the Khar-Tib Update, with the 1.3.1.2 hotfix from 2026-07-30). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- It is VR-only. You need a PCVR headset for the Steam version. The standalone Quest version is called Nomad, and the Byeth updates ship to both.
- Pick your mode deliberately. Crystal Hunt is the progression mode (78 skills to unlock, dungeons, lore, a home base and a shop). Sandbox gives you all weapons, armour and any skills you want. New players often learn in Sandbox, then start Crystal Hunt.
- Momentum is damage. A slow poke does almost nothing. Swing with your arm and shoulder, follow through, and thrust with intent. The game reads real velocity.
- Blades stab into soft targets. Thrust and the blade can penetrate and stick; pull out with a firm tug. Use this to pin, control and finish enemies.
- Blocking is physical. Hold your weapon or shield where the strike lands. Parry enemy blades by meeting them, not by pressing a button.
- Magic is in your hand. The castable elements are Fire, Lightning and Gravity, and 1.0 adds Body and Mind skill trees on top. Pick a spell from the spell wheel, hold the trigger to charge it, bring two charged hands together for a merge, and imbue a weapon by holding a charged spell against it.
- Telekinesis grabs from range. Point an open hand at weapons or enemies to pull or throw them.
- Slow-motion is a resource. Use it to read a fight, not as a crutch; it refills over time.
- Force impact changed heavy weapons. Since 1.3.1, long maces, long axes, greatswords and ballista bolts can stagger enemies through shield and weapon blocks with enough force.
- Mods are huge, but break on updates. After a major patch, update or disable mods before reporting bugs (WarpFrog's own advice after 1.2).
How Combat Actually Works
Blade & Sorcery has no swing animations for you. Everything is physics:
- Weapons have weight. Heavy weapons lag behind your real hand. Two-hand them (grab the haft with your second hand) to control them.
- Hitboxes are fine-grained. Where you hit matters: throat, face and gaps in armour matter far more than hitting a breastplate.
- Armour deflects. Slashes skid off metal. Switch to thrusts into gaps, blunt weapons, or magic against heavily armoured enemies.
- Enemies have full-body physics. You can grab, shove, trip, throw and disarm them. Grabbing a wrist and twisting away is a legitimate disarm.
- Deflection works on magic too. Blades can deflect incoming spells.
Weapon families
Type | Strengths | Tips
Daggers | Fast, great for stabbing gaps and throwing | Keep one on your hip for grabs
One-handed swords, scimitars, cutlasses | Balanced; pair with shield or spell | Aim for the neck and armpits
Axes | Hook shields and limbs | Hook a shield edge and pull it away
Maces and hammers | Ignore armour | Two-hand the long versions; they benefit from force impact
Spears and staves | Reach, pinning | Great with Gravity imbue
Bows | Ranged; physically draw arrows | Practice in Sandbox first
Shields | Block, bash; some can stab | The new Kharese shield has a front spike
Magic
- Fire: damage over time and area burst when charged. Imbued fire weapons ignite targets.
- Lightning: stuns and chains; excellent for crowd control. Imbued lightning weapons shock on hit.
- Gravity: pushes, lifts and slams. A charged gravity blast clears space; gravity-imbued blunt weapons send enemies flying.
- Merges: holding two charged spells together creates merge spells (unlocked through skills in Crystal Hunt).
- Body and Mind: these two trees are not elements you throw; they hold physical and mental skills (combat, movement and focus-style perks) that complement any element.
Keep an eye on your mana. Pure caster play works, but mixing a weapon hand with a spell hand is the most forgiving style.
How the skill trees are structured
Tree | Playstyle it supports
Fire | Burst and damage over time; strong vs unarmoured crowds
Lightning | Stuns and chaining; the best crowd-control element
Gravity | Pushes, slams and physics tricks; pairs with blunt weapons
Body | Physical/melee skills for non-casters and hybrids
Mind | Focus and utility skills that support every style
In Crystal Hunt each tree is unlocked through a prismatic crystal with three tiers. Each tier gives one free "tierbound" skill, and the other skills in that tier are bought with crystal shards (per Wikipedia's summary, a non-tier skill costs roughly three shards per tier level, so tier 3 skills are the expensive ones). Practical upshot: commit shards to one tree until its tier 2 and 3 skills are online before spreading out.
Holstering and inventory
- Weapons ride on your hips and back. Reach to the slot and grip to draw; release near it to holster. If slots feel out of reach, recalibrate your height.
- Carry a backup dagger on the hip. When your main weapon is stuck in an enemy or knocked away, a dagger draw is faster than telekinesis recall.
- Quivers hold arrows for bows; draw from the quiver and nock physically.
Crystal Hunt (Progression Mode)
Crystal Hunt is the 1.0 campaign loop:
- Start at your home base with no armour, no weapons and no skills except telekinesis. Gear up at the shop with gold.
- Head out to outposts, arenas and procedurally generated dungeons across the map. Dungeons end in a final room; you can fight through or use stealth to sneak past enemies. Clearing them earns gold and crystals.
- Spend crystals on skills in the skill trees (78 skills in total, per the Steam page). Trees cover the elemental spell schools and non-magic combat and utility skills.
- Buy better weapons with gold. Weapons come in tiers (the Steam news confirms tiers up to T4, with an achievement for buying every T4 weapon, fixed in 1.3.1.2).
- Uncover lore about the ancient Dalgarians as you go deeper.
Progression tips
- Early on, a solid one-handed weapon plus Fire or Lightning in the off hand (once your first crystal is unlocked) is the safest combination.
- Stealth is real. Crouch-walk and approach unaware enemies from behind; a thrust to the neck on an unalerted enemy ends fights before they start, and sneaking past optional rooms saves health for the final one.
- Arenas are wave fights. They are a good place to farm once your build works, and a bad place to test a new weapon.
- Spend early crystals on your main spell tree so imbues and casts become reliable, then branch out.
- Difficulty ramps with enemy tiers and armour. When runs start feeling bad, it is usually an armour problem: buy a blunt weapon or improve your thrusting.
- Look for the new Khar-Tib blade traps in Kharese areas; they are hazards, not loot (they were briefly miscounted as a T4 weapon).
The Byeth Updates (Free Content)
WarpFrog is releasing four free "Byeth Updates" that bring the setting's extended lore into the base game. Three are out as of September 2026.
Update | Released | Highlights
Rakta | October 2025 | East Asian-inspired Rakta weapons and armour; added the achievement system
1.2 Sentara | 2026-02-24 (1.2.1 on 2026-03-16) | Maritime nation west of Eraden; cutlass, stiletto dagger, boarding axe, harpoon, dueling sword, long sabre; a non-gunpowder Sentari firearm; a flamethrower; new water behaviour; Sentara Ship location; new maps and a revamped game mode
1.3 Khar-Tib | 2026-07-06 (1.3.1 on 2026-07-28) | Desert nation east of Eraden; bone-reinforced Kharese weapons including a labrys-style double axe, one-handed scimitar, khopesh, war scythe, dual-bladed dagger, a spiked shield and a dual-bladed staff; interactive map elements such as ballistas and blade traps
Madlu (fourth) | Expected late 2026 | The final entry in the Byeth series; no details revealed yet
Kharese weapon notes
- The double axe and dual-bladed staff can be imbued independently on each side, so one end can be fire and the other lightning.
- The spiked shield is the first shield in these updates that is a real offensive tool; stab with it.
- 1.3.1 added the Oron planet and the Azure Star back into the Khar-Tib skybox, plus desert optimizations.
Skill notes from the patch notes: 1.2.1 fixed the Discombobulate skill, buffed Airstrike, and disabled Ranged Expertise on spears (it was letting spears pass straight through enemies).
Comfort and Settings
- Locomotion: Smooth locomotion with snap turning is the most common setup. If you feel sick, enable vignette/comfort options and take short sessions.
- Physical space: Clear your play area; you will swing hard.
- Height calibration: Recalibrate if weapons on your hips or back feel out of reach.
- Performance: Lower render scale and shadows before anything else. The 1.3 series specifically optimized the Khar-Tib desert zones.
- Weight feel: If heavy weapons feel impossible, two-hand them before assuming it is a bug.
Mods
Blade & Sorcery has one of the biggest VR modding scenes, with an in-game mod manager using mod.io.
- 1.3.1.2 hotfix (2026-07-30) fixed a "failed to obtain terms of use" error that blocked the mod manager. WarpFrog noted the mod.io plugin is now legacy and a larger plugin update is still in progress, so a blank mod list can still happen.
- After any major update, expect outdated mods to cause strange bugs (invisible faces, broken spell wheels). Update the mod, and if it persists, try a new character.
- Community competitions produce vanilla-style content; the Sentara Modding Competition winners were highlighted before 1.3.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Waggling the controller. Small wrist flicks do little. Commit to full swings.
- Slashing plate armour. Thrust into gaps or switch to blunt/magic.
- Holding a sword like a baseball bat everywhere. Two-hand only what needs it; one-handed weapons are faster when held one-handed.
- Ignoring your off hand. An empty off hand should be casting, grabbing or holding a shield.
- Running Crystal Hunt with stale mods. Update mods after every patch.
- Playing through nausea. Stop, adjust comfort settings, come back later.
- Forgetting telekinesis. Pulling a dropped weapon back is often faster than walking to it.
Advanced Tips
- Imbue before engaging. An imbued weapon turns every hit into a spell effect for no extra mana per swing.
- Gravity-imbued blunt weapons combined with the new force impact mechanic break guards very reliably.
- Grab and stab. Grab an enemy's collar or arm with your off hand, pull them into a dagger thrust. It bypasses a lot of blocking.
- Throwing weapons with telekinesis assist is a strong ranged option; recall them with telekinesis.
- Use the environment. Shove enemies off ledges, into traps, or into each other.
- Slow-motion for parry practice. Use it to learn enemy attack timings, then wean off it.
- Sandbox as a practice range. Test every new Byeth weapon there before relying on it in Crystal Hunt.
FAQ
Can I play Blade & Sorcery without VR? No. It is built exclusively for VR.
What is Nomad? The standalone Meta Quest version. The Byeth updates (1.2 Sentara, 1.3 Khar-Tib) released on PCVR and Nomad together.
What is the latest version? 1.3.1 (Khar-Tib) with the 1.3.1.2 hotfix, as of September 2026.
How many Byeth updates are left? One. Khar-Tib was number 3 of 4 (after Rakta and Sentara); the fourth, Madlu, is expected in late 2026.
How do I get crystal shards faster? Clear dungeons to the final room and run arenas once your build is stable. Spend shards in one tree first so its tier skills pay off sooner.
Is Blade & Sorcery on Quest the same game? Nomad is the standalone version. It reached 1.0 on Quest 2 and PICO 4 on 2024-10-28 and now receives the Byeth updates alongside PCVR.
Why is my mod manager empty or broken? The mod.io plugin WarpFrog uses is legacy. Update to 1.3.1.2 to fix the terms-of-use error; the full plugin replacement is still being worked on.
Are there guns? Sentara added a Sentari firearm, but WarpFrog stated it does not use gunpowder.
Why can't I get the "buy every T4 weapon" achievement? It was blocked by the Khar-Tib spin trap blade being counted as a purchasable T4 weapon. Fixed in 1.3.1.2.
