A guide to surviving the McDoodle family's nuclear apocalypse: what to grab in the 60-second scramble, how to ration soup and water in the shelter, how expeditions and events work, which modes and difficulties exist, and how to chase the many endings and achievements.
Researched September 2026 — current as of the stable Reatomized release (no major content patches since launch-era updates; recent Steam posts are sales). Robot Gentleman's next game, 60 Seconds! Souper Scavenger, had a demo in February 2026; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Play the Atomic Drill first. It is the tutorial and earns its own achievement.
- Family and water come first, then soup. Supplies you did not grab cannot be found in the shelter.
- Plan a route in the first seconds. The house layout is randomized each time. Look at the room layout and plan a loop that ends at the shelter.
- Drop items at the shelter hatch in batches. Carry as much as you can, run to the hatch, drop, repeat.
- Grab the radio. Military broadcasts are a main path to rescue.
- Take a mix of useful tools: something for defense, a light source, a medkit, and items for expeditions.
- Ration, do not feed every day. Characters survive short stretches without food and water; feed when they show signs of needing it.
- Watch the journal. Every day's page tells you who is hungry, thirsty, sick, tired, or going mad.
- Send well-fed, healthy characters on expeditions and equip them sensibly.
- Save hard choices for when you understand their costs. Many events have no second chance.
Game Modes
Mode | What it is
Atomic Drill | Tutorial run of scavenging
Apocalypse | The full game: scavenge in 60 seconds, then survive in the shelter
Scavenge | Scavenging only
Survival | Start in the shelter with a preset loadout
Survival Challenges | Reatomized's short, scripted survival storylines
Scavenge Challenges | Themed scavenging tasks (for example "Holidays!")
Difficulties are named after nuclear bombs: Little Boy, Fat Man and Tsar Bomba, from easiest to hardest. Achievements require wins in every mode on each of them ("Enola Gay", "Manhattan Project", "Dead Hand").
The McDoodle Family
Character | Role
Ted | The dad; one of the two playable scavengers
Dolores | The mom; the other playable scavenger ("Girl Power" for surviving as her)
Mary Jane | The daughter
Timmy | The son
You choose Ted or Dolores to scavenge. Family members must be physically carried to the shelter like items. Bringing everyone gets "Family guy".
The 60-Second Scavenge
Priorities
Priority | Items | Why
Must-have | Family members | More hands for expeditions and a shot at more endings
Must-have | Water bottles and soup cans | The core of survival
Very important | Radio | Rescue broadcasts and major storylines
Important | Medkit | Treats sickness and injuries
Important | A defensive item (such as the axe or the rifle) | Raiders and dangerous expeditions
Useful | Flashlight, gas mask, map, bug spray, suitcase, padlock | Expeditions, events and defense
Morale | Board games, harmonica, playing cards, Boy Scout handbook | Keep minds intact and unlock event solutions
Scavenging tips
- Look before you run. The first second of a run should be about spotting where the shelter is and where the kitchen and bedrooms are.
- Furniture blocks you. Knocking into furniture slows you down badly. Take clean paths.
- Carry capacity is limited and people use capacity too. Plan batches.
- Leave room for a last dash. Get back to the hatch before the clock ends — being outside when time runs out is a game over (and the "Duck and cover!" achievement).
- Grabbing 10 soup cans or 10 water bottles in one run earns "Souper!" and "2-1-6".
- "Be Prepared" exists for a reason: do not forget to stock the shelter.
Surviving the Shelter
Each day you read the journal and make decisions: who eats, who drinks, who goes outside, and how to respond to events.
Rationing rules of thumb
- Do not feed everyone every day. Supplies will run out long before rescue.
- Water is more urgent than food. Characters get thirsty faster than hungry.
- Feed the character you plan to send out so they come back.
- Watch warning signs in the journal ("hungry", "very thirsty", "sick", "tired", "crazy"). Act at the first warning, not the last.
Status problems
- Sickness: use a medkit.
- Injury: medkit and rest.
- Madness: morale items (games, handbook, harmonica, cards) and company help; a character left alone with their thoughts can lose it entirely (turning the shelter into a madhouse is its own achievement, "Cuckoo's nest").
- Radiation: mostly an expedition risk; the gas mask helps protect expedition members.
Events
Events arrive through the journal: knocks at the hatch, strangers wanting to trade, raiders, broken equipment, radio messages, and odd visitors. Common patterns:
- Knock at the door: could be a trader, the military, or trouble. Weapons and the padlock make hostile visitors less dangerous.
- Trades: you can swap items with wanderers. Thirty successful trades gets "Fair Exchange".
- Raids: a weapon or good defensive preparation can stop them. Stopping three in one game gets "Unbreakable".
- Broken items: the radio and other gear can break and need repairs with tools or specific items.
- Bugs: mutant roaches can show up; bug spray deals with them.
Expeditions
- Send a character out with useful items: the map, a gas mask, the flashlight, a weapon.
- Expeditions take days; the person is gone and needs supplies when they return.
- Returning explorers bring back supplies, items, and sometimes story progress.
- The risk is real — radiation, raiders and injuries can kill them.
- Expeditions drive most endings.
Endings and Storylines
60 Seconds! Reatomized has many endings. Most involve either being rescued or finding a new place in the wasteland.
Outcome | How you get there
Military rescue | Follow radio broadcasts and do what the military asks ("Rescue time!")
Allying with other wastelanders | Help or join other survivors ("A New Hope")
Meeting the local "law-enforcement" | A faction storyline ("New order")
Mutant ending | "New species"
Reconnecting with old friends | Reatomized storyline ("Enigma", "Dawkins Residence")
The VIP bunker | A Reatomized storyline ("Men in Black")
Cats | A strange feline storyline ("Feline Domination", "Cat Lady")
Reatomized added a multi-run storyline to escape the wasteland, which is why some endings build on things from earlier playthroughs.
Survival Challenges
Reatomized's Survival Challenges are short scripted scenarios that test specific skills with a preset shelter. They are the best way to learn how particular events and items work. Finishing one earns "Rogue One".
Achievement Hunting Tips
- "Yes Man" and "Naysayer" require always saying yes, or always no, and still winning. Pick an easy difficulty for these.
- "Pacifist" asks you to defend yourself without a weapon.
- "Gotta get 'em all" requires scavenging every item at least once across runs.
- "Pro gamer" in Apocalypse mode asks you to grab only what a real gamer needs — think entertainment over survival.
- "Tora! Tora! Tora!" (ram 1337 obstacles) is a big number, so expect it to come from many runs of reckless scavenging rather than one.
- "Konrad style!" requires beating the fallout shelter survival record.
- "Miracle" and "Not Alone" are secret-flavored achievements tied to unusual events.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Grabbing items before family. You can find some items later; you cannot find lost family.
- Running without a route. Randomized layouts punish improvisation.
- Feeding everyone daily. You will starve by the second week.
- Sending a sick or thirsty character on an expedition.
- Ignoring the radio. It is central to rescue.
- Leaving no defense. Raids happen.
- Letting characters go mad. Morale items matter.
Advanced Tips
- Scavenge speedrun: grab heavy-value items (family, water, soup, radio) first, then fill with tools on the way back.
- Hold a weapon in reserve for the knock at the door you do not trust.
- Rotate expeditions so no one character is always outside.
- Use trades to swap redundant items for what you are missing.
- Keep one character "on duty" while others rest to handle events.
- Play Survival mode to practice shelter decisions without the scavenge stress.
