How to land, loot, fight, and close out games in Z1 Battle Royale (the free-to-play continuation of H1Z1's battle royale mode), plus what to expect from a game that is still online but no longer actively developed.

Researched September 2026 — current as of the last official patch (PC maintenance, February 19, 2020; Season 6 was the last announced season). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.

Status check (September 2026): Z1 Battle Royale is still free on Steam and its servers are still up. Steam Charts showed roughly 350 concurrent players (about 600 at the 24-hour peak) in late September 2026, but monthly averages have been far lower (dozens, not hundreds, through mid-2026) — compare that with an all-time peak of over 150,000. The last official announcement on Steam is a maintenance patch from February 19, 2020. Since then there have been no new seasons or content, so treat it as a maintenance-mode game: queues depend on time of day and region, and everything below reflects the final live build.

A Short History (so the names make sense)

Date | What happened

Jan 2015 | H1Z1 launches in Early Access (survival and battle royale together)

Feb 2016 | Split into H1Z1: King of the Kill (battle royale) and H1Z1: Just Survive

Feb 28, 2018 | Leaves Early Access as H1Z1 (Season 1)

Mar 8, 2018 | Goes free-to-play

Oct 2018 | Just Survive is cancelled

May–Aug 2018 | H1Z1 enters PS4 early access (May 22) and fully releases on PS4 (Aug 7)

Mar 2019 | NantG Mobile rebrands it Z1 Battle Royale, restores the classic movement, gunplay, vehicles, and map feel, and adds in-match missions and a ranked playlist

Apr 2019 | Development returns to Daybreak Game Company

Jun–Jul 2019 | ARV, LMG, Scout Rifle, Racer vehicle, and rotating arcade modes added

Nov 7, 2019 | Season 6 kicks off; ping lock relaxed and Asia removed as a region

Feb 19, 2020 | Last posted patch: ARV spawns replaced by Offroaders, Asia/Pacific players home to NA

If you remember "classic H1Z1", this is it: the 2019 revert deliberately brought back the 2017 feel.

Quick Start

  • It is free. Install from Steam and queue for Solo, Duos, or Fives. Matches hold up to 150 players.
  • Pick your region with ping in mind. Season 6 (November 2019) removed Asia as a playable region to consolidate players on NA and EU servers, and the final patch made NA the home server for Asia/Pacific players.
  • You parachute in. Pick quiet towns early on; hot drops mean a coin-flip fist or pistol fight.
  • Loot fast and leave. Grab a weapon, some armor, and healing, then move. The gas is what kills most new players.
  • The gas rings deal more damage each stage. Early gas can be survived for a while with healing; late gas can't. Know where the next safe zone is before you start looting a building.
  • Vehicles are important. Offroaders, Pick Up Trucks, Police Cars, and others let you outrun the gas and can run people over. They also make noise and draw attention.
  • Craft bandages and armor. Scavenged cloth and materials can be turned into bandages and makeshift body armor from the crafting menu. Do it while you're rotating, not in the middle of a fight.
  • Aim for the head. Headshot multipliers are large and first-shot accuracy matters. Stop moving before you shoot your first rifle shot.
  • Airdrops have the best gear and draw the whole lobby. Only contest one if you can see the area around it.

Core Mechanics

Match flow

  • Drop: Everyone deploys by parachute from a random location over the map.
  • Loot: Buildings, sheds, and vehicles hold weapons, ammo, armor, helmets, backpacks, and healing.
  • Gas: A toxic cloud closes in on timed stages, and each stage hurts more than the last. Rotate early. A late move through open fields is how you get third-partied.
  • Endgame: The final circles are small and chaotic. Height, cover, and full health matter more than kill count.

Modes

Mode | Team size | Notes

Solo | 1 | The core mode. Standard ranked progress lives here.

Duos | 2 | Revive and trade kills with your partner.

Fives | 5 | Chaos. Vehicles and team pushes decide games.

Ranked | 1 | The NantG relaunch (Season 3, March 2019) added seasonal play and a ranked playlist.

Arcade modes | varies | Rotating limited modes (see below). They may not be available anymore.

Arcade modes that rotated through in 2019 include Shotties & Snipers, Auto Royale, ATV Rampage, Outlawed: No Shotguns No Bows, Sharp Shooter, Road Runners, Assault Rush, Detonation, Raining Racers, and Hot Dog Eating Contest. With no live team, availability depends on the final server configuration.

Missions

The NantG relaunch added in-match missions, which are optional tasks you're given during a game. They're a good way to earn progress without hunting kills. Just don't die chasing them.

Ranks

Ranked play is seasonal, and leaderboards reset each season (Season 6 was the last announced). With a small population, lobbies mix skill levels widely, and ranked play is dominated by long-time veterans.

Weapons

Weapon names below come from the official Z1BR patch notes. Exact damage numbers changed several times across 2019, so this list sticks to roles.

Weapon | Role | Tips

AR-15 | All-round rifle | Accurate first shot. Tap-fire at range. A top pick for most fights.

AK-47 | Hard-hitting rifle | More recoil than the AR. Short bursts only.

Shotgun (pump) | Close range | Decides building fights. Pair it with a rifle.

Sniper Rifle / Ranch Rifle / Scout Rifle | Long range | Headshots are huge. Stay still for accuracy.

M1911 / M1911A1, M9 | Pistols | Early-drop weapons. Swap out quickly.

Magnum / Deagle | Heavy pistol | Hits hard but is slow. Fine as a backup.

LMG | Suppression | Added June 2019. Useful in Fives.

M1 Socom | Semi-auto rifle | Strong mid-range option.

Crossbow / Explosive Crossbow | Niche | Silent, or splash damage in the explosive version.

RPG-7 | Explosive | Mainly airdrop or mode loot. Deletes vehicles.

Combat Knife, Machete | Melee | Fallback weapons for the first few seconds of a match.

Loadout rule of thumb: one rifle (AR-15 or AK-47) plus one shotgun. Upgrade the rifle slot to a sniper only if you're confident with headshots.

Armor, Healing & Gear

  • Body armor: You'll find laminated armor in the world and in airdrops, and you can craft makeshift armor. Wear the best you find, since it's often the difference between winning and losing a trade.
  • Helmets: They protect against headshots. Many helmet names (such as the Patriotic Motorcycle Helmet or Gladiator variants) are cosmetic skins. What counts is wearing one at all.
  • Healing: Bandages are cheap and slow. First Aid kits restore much more. Heal behind hard cover or inside a vehicle, and never in the open.
  • Bleeding: Some hits cause bleeding. Bandage it out before it ticks you down.
  • Backpacks: The Rucksack, Tactical Backpack, and Military Backpack increase carrying capacity. Grab a bigger one early so you can hold ammo and heals.
  • Gas grenades deny an area and flush people out of buildings.

Vehicles

Vehicle | Why use it

Offroader | Tough and quick off-road. It replaced ARV spawns in the final patch.

Pick Up Truck | Durable and carries a squad.

Police Car | Fast on roads.

Taxi | Common city spawn and decent speed.

ATV / Motorcycle | Very fast but fragile, and you're exposed while driving.

Racer | Luxury sports car added July 2019. Very fast on roads.

Vehicle tips:

  • Don't drive in the final circles. You'll get shot. Park the car as cover and get out.
  • Ramming is real. Players on foot in open fields can be run over.
  • Shoot drivers, not tires. The player dies faster than the car.
  • Vehicles are loud. Engines tell everyone nearby where you are.

Drop & Rotation Strategy

First 60 seconds

  • Land on the edge of a town, not the center. Loot two or three houses, then decide whether to fight.
  • If someone lands on your roof, grab the first weapon you see. A pistol beats fists.

Mid-game

  • Look at the map as soon as each safe zone shows. Rotate early along the edge of the gas instead of cutting across the middle.
  • Take a vehicle if one is nearby, and ditch it before the last two circles.
  • Hold buildings or ridges on the side of the circle closest to where the next gas push will come from.

Endgame

  • Top up healing to the maximum before the final circle, and pre-craft your bandages.
  • Don't take long-range potshots that reveal your position. Wait for a sure headshot or for someone else to start a fight.
  • In Fives, make sure one person covers the flanks while the rest push.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Looting while the gas moves. Most deaths for new players are gas or getting caught in the open during a late rotation.
  • Spraying at range. Rifles are built around first-shot accuracy. Tap fire, and stop moving for your first shot.
  • Healing in the open. Heal behind cover, inside a building, or in a vehicle you've parked as a shield.
  • Driving into the final circle. You become the loudest and most visible target in the lobby.
  • Chasing every airdrop. They're bait. Contest one only when you can see who's coming.
  • Ignoring your region. High ping ruins hit registration. Pick the closest remaining region (NA or EU).

Advanced Tips

  • Pre-aim doorways and windows when you move between buildings. Most fights start at openings.
  • Swap to a shotgun before breaching a house. Don't swap mid-fight.
  • Use vehicles as mobile cover in the last circles. Park, jump out, and shoot over or around them.
  • Third-party smart. When you hear a long fight, wait for it to finish, then push the winner while they heal.
  • Play at peak hours. With a few hundred concurrent players, queue times and lobby sizes are much better in the evening in NA and EU.
  • Practice aim in arcade modes like Sharp Shooter or Shotties & Snipers when they're available. They force the weapon types you need most.

FAQ

Is Z1 Battle Royale still online in 2026? Yes. Servers are up, and Steam Charts showed a few hundred concurrent players in September 2026. There's no active development, though. The last official patch was February 2020.

Is Z1 Battle Royale the same as H1Z1? Yes. It's the battle royale mode of H1Z1 (formerly King of the Kill), rebranded in March 2019 and reverted to an early-2017 ruleset.

Is it free? Yes, it has been free-to-play on Steam since March 2018.

Can I play in Asia or South America? Asia was removed as a playable region in Season 6 (November 2019), and the February 2020 patch made NA the home server for Asia/Pacific players, so expect higher ping. Plan on NA or EU.

What happened to H1Z1: Just Survive? The survival game was cancelled in October 2018 and is separate from Z1BR.

Was there a PS4 version? H1Z1 released on PS4 in 2018 as a separate version. This guide covers the PC (Steam) game.

What's the best weapon? The AR-15 is the safest all-round rifle. Pair it with a shotgun for building fights.
