A practical guide to World of Warships on PC: ship classes, core gunnery and armor mechanics, economy and resources, how to choose a tech tree line, and the current anniversary content.
Researched September 2026 — current as of Update 15.8 (11th Anniversary). Live games change; check the linked sources if something differs.
Quick Start
- Detection is everything. Every ship has a surface detection range. If you are outside the enemy's detection range and not firing, you are invisible. Learn your ship's number and play around it.
- Never sail broadside toward enemy battleships. Show your bow or stern at an angle; broadsides eat citadel hits.
- Don't lead the charge, don't hide at the map edge. Stay with your team, near islands or at the second line, and shoot what is spotted.
- Use HE on destroyers, cruisers, and unarmored superstructure; AP on broadside cruisers and battleships. Swap ammo based on angle, not habit.
- Play for objectives. In Domination, capping and holding points win more games than raw damage.
- Watch the minimap constantly. Most deaths come from being isolated or flanked.
- Mount the right upgrades and commander skills. A properly built ship is noticeably stronger. The commander skill tree caps at 21 points.
- Complete your first-win-of-day and combat missions. Daily rewards and missions are the fastest way to grind credits and XP.
- Try the new low-tier Operations. Update 15.8 added PvE scenarios starting at Tier II, a low-pressure way to learn.
Ship Classes
Class | Role | Strengths | Weaknesses
Destroyer (DD) | Spotting, capping, torpedoes | Stealth, speed, smoke | Low HP, dies to radar and focus fire
Cruiser (CA/CL) | Fire support, anti-DD, AA | Rate of fire, consumables (radar, hydro) | Citadels exposed; punished for broadsiding
Battleship (BB) | Frontline tank, heavy damage | HP, armor, big guns, heals | Slow, long reload, needs support against DDs
Aircraft Carrier (CV) | Air strikes, spotting | Map-wide reach and spotting | Low direct influence on caps; complex
Submarine (SS) | Stealth torpedo attacks | Diving, homing torpedoes | Short ranges, needs practice
Controls
Key | Action
W / S | Throttle up / down in steps
A / D | Rudder left / right
Mouse | Aim; left click to fire
Shift | Binocular zoom
X | Lock target
R, T, Y, U | Ship consumables
M | Tactical map
F-keys | Quick chat commands (check Settings, Controls for the full list)
Ctrl | Free cursor for minimap and UI
Tips: Set your throttle and rudder, then steer with small inputs. Use the minimap to plan turns ahead of time rather than panic-turning into broadsides.
Core Mechanics
Detection and Spotting
- Your surface detection range is how close an enemy must be to spot you. Firing your main guns temporarily increases it.
- Radar (Surveillance Radar) and Hydroacoustic Search reveal ships through islands and smoke within their range.
- Smoke Generator hides ships inside the cloud; firing from smoke has its own reduced detection.
- If you are spotted, your ship icon shows an eye. Turning away or behind cover breaks detection once you are out of range.
Armor, Overmatch, and Angling
- Citadel hits on battleships and cruisers deal massive damage. They happen when AP shells penetrate the belt and explode inside the ship.
- Angling your ship makes incoming AP more likely to bounce or ricochet, reducing damage.
- Overmatch: large-caliber AP ignores angles against thinner armor. Big battleship guns can overmatch the bows and sterns of many cruisers regardless of angle.
- HE doesn't care about angles; it damages superstructure and sets fires.
Fires, Flooding, and Repair
- Fires and floods deal damage over time. Damage Control Party clears them; Repair Party heals.
- Save Damage Control Party for multiple fires or flooding on battleships. Don't waste it on a single short fire unless you are in danger.
Anti-Aircraft
- AA auras shoot down planes within range. Ships with strong AA can protect teammates.
- Use the AA focus mechanic (shown as Concentrated AA Fire in current tooltips) to boost AA effectiveness on one side. The Port tooltip for Concentrated AA Fire was updated in 15.8 to show its bonus to AA shell-explosion damage, so check it for your ship's current values.
Dispersion and Sigma
- Shells scatter within an ellipse (dispersion). Sigma controls how tightly shells cluster in the center.
- Battleships have large dispersion at long range; get closer (but safely) for more consistent hits.
Economy and Resources
Resource | Earned from | Best use
Credits | Battles, missions | Buying ships, modules, upgrades
Ship XP | Battles on that ship | Researching next modules and ships
Free XP | A percentage of all XP | Skipping bad ships or modules
Commander XP | Battles | Commander skills
Doubloons | Purchase, events | Premium account, premium ships, retraining
Coal | Daily containers, missions | Coal ships and upgrades in the Armory
Steel | Ranked, Clan Battles, superships | Steel ships in the Armory
Research Points | Research Bureau resets | Special ships (Research Bureau line)
Rules of thumb
- Spend Free XP sparingly early; save it to skip weak stock hulls or for special ships.
- Premium time and signals massively boost income; use economic signals on high-tier ships.
- Coal and Steel accumulate slowly. Research which ships are worth it before spending.
Choosing a Tech Tree Line
Early lines that teach fundamentals well:
- Japanese battleships – long-range guns, straightforward play. Good for learning gunnery.
- German battleships – tanky and strong secondaries; forgiving at close range.
- US light cruisers – good HE output and support tools; teach positioning.
- US or Soviet destroyers – gun-focused DDs that teach capping and knife-fighting.
Advanced lines usually punish mistakes more: torpedo-heavy Japanese destroyers, submarines, and aircraft carriers.
General path: Play Tier I–V to learn mechanics, and stay at Tier V–VII for a while before rushing to high tiers. High-tier matchmaking brings radar, strong carriers, and more skilled players.
Commander Skills and Upgrades
- The commander skill tree caps at 21 points. Each class has its own skill tree.
- Must-haves: skills that reduce detection, improve survivability, or strengthen your key consumables.
- Upgrades: mount consumable, survivability, or damage upgrades based on your ship's role. Unique (Legendary) Upgrades exist for some Tier X ships and are bought with Coal.
- Signals and camouflage: signals give bonuses in battle and after battle; permanent camos reduce detection and boost earnings.
Battle Types and Current Content (Update 15.8)
- Random Battles – the main mode. Tiers play within a matchmaking spread.
- Co-op Battles – against bots; good for learning or completing missions.
- Operations – PvE scenarios. Update 15.8 added Trial by Fire (from Tier II), Swarm of Steel (from Tier III), and Beehive (from Tier IV) for newer players.
- Ranked Battles – competitive seasons with league progression and Steel rewards.
- Clan Battles – Season 35, "Komodo Dragon", is a 5v5 Tier VIII format with a one-battleship limit per team.
- Asymmetric Battles – Tier VIII and IX balance was adjusted in 15.8.
11th Anniversary highlights (15.8)
- Birthday Gift extras: the "Happy Blastday" destruction effect, "Blast & Bash" permanent camouflage, and 11 days of Warships Premium Account.
- Festive Tokens earned through the anniversary's snowflake bonuses, exchangeable for rewards including the Japanese supercruiser Kurama in Early Access (11,000 tokens).
- Dockyard: Tier IX British battleship Marlborough B, 28 phases (23 through combat missions, 5 purchasable with Doubloons).
- Red Steel Titan Premium containers complete a 60-element collection that rewards the Tier IX Soviet battleship Sovetskaya Rossiya.
Positioning and Class Tips
Battleships
- Angle against other battleships. Don't show broadside unless you are firing and ready to turn back.
- Use islands to block fire from multiple angles.
- Save secondary builds for ships designed for close fights (usually German battleships).
Cruisers
- Stay behind islands and use them to fire over while avoiding detection.
- Radar and hydro cruisers counter destroyers; use them near caps.
- Kite away from battleships; don't get caught broadside.
Destroyers
- Spot for your team and contest caps early.
- Avoid radar ranges; learn which enemy cruisers carry radar.
- Launch torpedoes where ships are going, not where they are.
Aircraft Carriers and Submarines
- CVs: spot enemies and strike isolated targets. Avoid flying into strong AA.
- Subs: use depth and stealth, then surface to reposition. Homing torpedoes need you to keep pinging the target.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Sailing broadside to enemies. The fastest way to lose half your HP.
- Going to the map edge. You lose influence on the game and often get flanked.
- Ignoring the minimap. Most deaths come from missing flanks or radar ranges.
- Using the wrong ammo. HE vs AP matters; swap based on target and angle.
- Wasting Damage Control Party. Save it for multiple fires or floods.
- Rushing tiers. Moving to Tier X without learning basics is painful.
- Staying spotted. If you are taking fire, back off or turn to break detection.
Advanced Tips
- Pre-plan your escape. Always know where you will go if an enemy pushes you.
- Wiggle and change speed. Changing course and speed throws off enemy aim.
- Track enemy reloads. After a battleship fires, you have a window to turn broadside briefly and fire back.
- Use islands to hide your approach. Islands block line of sight and shells.
- Learn common radar ranges. Destroyer survival depends on knowing where radar cruisers can reach.
- Play in divisions. Coordinated support vastly improves win rates.
- Check ship stats before battle. Know your detection and enemy detection ranges.
